TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

How exactly do weather balloons work?

Does yogurt really contain bacteria?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Is it true that some guy tied balloons to a lawn chair and
flew several miles into the sky?

This one's absolutely true. Larry Walters of Los Angeles
always dreamed of flying, but never got the chance. So
one fine day in 1982, he went out and bought 45 weather
balloons and several tanks of helium. He attached them
to a lawn chair (which was anchored to his jeep), and
took a pellet gun, a few sandwiches, and some beer, and
cut the cords to release himself. He hoped to go about
30 feet up and slowly float above his house for awhile. He
figured that when he got tired of looking down on his
neighbors, he'd slowly shoot out his balloons with the
pellet gun and drop lightly to earth. Poor Larry! He
succeeded TOO well, flying very quickly up to 16,000 feet,
high enough up that an airline pilot reported him to the
control tower of Los Angeles International Airport. Things
got worse: Larry was too high up to risk using his pellet
gun (for fear he'd hit the balloons unevenly and fall) so
he drifted cold and scared for 14 hours until he finally
got up the nerve to shoot out his balloons. After arriving
back on the ground, Larry was promptly arrested.
Despite surviving his incredibly stupid adventure, Larry
was honored with the 1982 Darwin Award Honorable
Mention.

What is the Darwin Award?

It's a humorous award given posthumously (in most
cases) to those who "improve the human gene pool by
removing themselves from it." Basically, it honors
people who do really stupid things that generally lead
to death.

Perspective

Here is one that will have you looking at your perspective.

Your Loving Daughter, Mary

Dear Mom and Dad,

It has now been three months since I left for college. I have
been remiss in writing and I am very sorry for my
thoughtlessness. I will bring you up to date now, but before
you read on, please sit down. YOU ARE NOT TO READ
ANY FURTHER UNLESS YOU ARE SITTING DOWN,
okay? Well, I am getting along pretty well now. The skull
fracture and the concussion I got when I jumped out of the
window of my dormitory when it caught fire shortly after my
arrival are pretty well healed now. I only spent two weeks
in the hospital and I now can see almost normally and I
only get those sick headaches once a week.

Fortunately, the fire in the dormitory and my jump was
witnessed by an attendant at the gas station near the
dorm and he was the one who called the fire department
and the ambulance. He also visited me at the hospital
and since I had nowhere to live because of the burnt-out
dorm, he was kind enough to invite me to share his
apartment with him. It's really an attic room, but it's kind
of cute. He is a very fine boy and we have fallen deeply
in love and are planning to get married. We haven't exactly
set the date yet, but it will be before my pregnancy begins
to show. Yes, Mom and Dad, I am pregnant. I know how
you are looking forward to being grandparents and I know
you will welcome the baby and give it the same love and
devotion and tender care you gave me as a child. The
reason for the delay in our marriage is that my boyfriend
has some minor infection which prevents us from passing
our premarital blood tests and I carelessly caught it from
him. This will soon clear up with the penicillin injections
I am taking daily.

Now that I have brought you up to date, I want to tell you
that there was no dormitory fire. I do not have a concussion
or a skull fracture, I was not in the hospital, I am not
pregnant, I am not engaged, I do not have syphilis and in
fact there is no man in my life. However, I am getting a
"D" in history and a "F" in science class and I wanted you
to see these marks in their proper perspective.

Your loving daughter,
Mary

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

A Hard, But Necessary Decision: Finding A
New Home For A Loved One.

At last you've come to a very painful decision: as
a family you have decided it's time put your mother
in a care facility. You know she is not going to be
very happy. She has watched her friends in
"old age homes" and didn't like what she saw.

This has been one of your most difficult decisions: you
feel you are abandoning her to strangers. Your guilt is
overpowering! But it must be done and you have
thought it out - long and hard before coming to this
conclusion. Her care has become very strenuous
and at times she won't co-operate.

Also, deep down, you know that you don't have all
the skills and equipment that would keep her
independent. But you also recall the horror stories
about some places, so choosing the right facility is
crucial. The place will have to suit both of you.

It's just as important for you to know someone cares
for her as much as you do as it is for your mom to be
happy or else she'll want to leave. That will create
more headaches and a lot of unhappiness!

Before coming to one of these facilities, most
residents will fear a real loss of independence
and dignity, and will worry about safety issues. As
well, they feel they will be a burden to everyone
and can't be themselves anymore: that they will
have to make MAJOR CHANGES and they don't
want to.

So you will have to find a place where independence
is valued and protected.

Take heart: many good ones exist. With patience,
time, and a mission, you will find a suitable facility
where she will be happy and settle right in.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------

"I think we'll have a special supper tonight
in honor of Tim and Sharon." Eloise was doing the
talking. "Sharon what is the supper you would most
like to have tonight? You know, the one you would
order in a restaurant back home if money were no
object?"

Sharon was yet that new to living by higher
law she had not considered all the things one
could do. She closed her eyes and thought about
what she would like. She remembered seeing people
in a restaurant back home having a meal of steak
and lobster. It looked delicious. She thought she
would have that.

By the time she opened her eyes and was about
to tell Eloise what it was she wanted it was there
right in front of her, including the utensils she
would need to eat with.

Everyone in the group had the opportunity to
pick their favorite meal and it was placed before
them. Manifesting such food by higher law meant
that the food was prepared to perfection and
tasted much better than anything humankind could
do. It was a terrific meal.

So, too, was the comradeship they felt from
around the fire. Mazunta had caused a small,
steady fire to happen and the warmth of it seemed
to add to the enjoyment of all.

There was something magical about a fire. The
village had recognized that many years ago which
is why the community fire in the evenings was such
a ritual. It was warm and inviting. It allowed
people to be by themselves with their own thoughts
while, at the same time, allowed them to be
together in a group and participate in
conversation there. It promoted togetherness,
loving friendship and bonded the community values.

That is one of the reason fireplaces are so
popular in North America. They cause a similar
effect within onlookers.

"I hope your folks don't mind you staying out
tonight. If we stay for the fire we will be
staying all night." Tim was expressing his concern
to Sharon.

"I am not sure how they will react Tim, but I
had a talk with Mom before I went over to your
place and we spoke of just such an event. She said
she would speak with Dad. They may not like it but
they must now trust. They know I learned higher
law. They just don't know exactly what it means
yet in their lives. It'll be all right."

"Sharon, if it will be of any help I will
speak with your folks." Sam had been listening to
the conversation and had interjected his
willingness to help.

"I think it will be all right Mr. Henry. Thank
you for offering. If my Dad wants to speak with
you I will offer it. Thank you."

"We will have a big fire tonight in honor of
you two. I am glad you decided to stay. We honor
love in this village. You will see tonight. Our
ancestors learned long ago that all of life goes
better with love and so we take great care in this
village to express only love to ourselves, our
mates, our children, our neighbors and to all who
come here. Tonight we will carry on that tradition
and we are glad you are here to join with us."
Mazunta was welcoming the couple and preparing
them a little for the evenings events.

When supper was over the plates, utensils and
any mess that was made simply disappeared. The
clean up was easy with higher law. Eloise did not
do supper this way often, instead preferring to do
things the way the village women did. However,
once in a while at special events this is how
supper arrived. He children were used to it and
always loved it.

Eloise's and Mazunta's kids had not come up to
supper with the adults. They had remained to play
with the rest of the kids. But within the group
there was somehow a silent signal. When it was
suppertime the beach just cleared of kids and each
went to their own homes. It was an automatic
thing.

Eloise's children appeared at just the right
time to sit down to their meals. They sat next to
Grandma and Grandpa.

Life was peaceful here and Sharon could see
it. She could understand why folks wanted to live
here. She had been impressed by what she saw at
David and Pamela Wiley's. Their kids were free,
self confident, self reliant and loving. It was
evident, too, they were learning higher law and
would survive all and anything anywhere in the
world. If any parent wanted anything for a child
this was the optimum. Sharon knew why they lived
here, in this environment.

As was typical of them Mazunta's folks came by
to pick up Eloise and Maz on their way to the
fire. The fire had actually been started, but the
women of the village were still making
preparations for the ceremony, so Mazunta's
parents sat and visited for a while. They were
introduced to Sharon.

HA! HA! HA!

A magician accidentally turned his wife into a couch and
his two kids into armchairs. He started to panic and
thought to himself, "What on earth have I done?"

He began to ponder, "How am I going to bring back my
beloved family?" So, he thought for a while and decided
a good idea was to take them to a hospital and see if the
surgeon could operate and bring them back. He
loaded them into his van and off he rushed to the local
hospital.

He walked up and down the hospital hall and after some
serious surgery, he asks the doctor, "Doc, how are they?"

The doctor replied, "Comfortable!"
