What do "good" bacteria do?

LOTS of things. Good bacteria not only keeps "bad"
bacteria in check, it helps to regulate our immune
systems and produce vitamin K, a necessary
blood-clotting agent.

Is it true we have about four POUNDS of bacteria in
our bodies?

Yep. Every single human being is carting around several
TRILLION bacteria of perhaps as many as 1000 different
strains. Together, they can weigh as much as four pounds.

TOO BUSY TO TAKE A BREAK?
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO TAKE ‘TIME OUT'
by Jennifer Summers

How many times have you continued working, knowing that you
are not giving 100% to the task at hand?

How many times have you read or written the same sentence
over and over again, as your mind keeps wandering and
thinking about other things?

How often have you wanted to take a break from the family
or kids but feared the consequences of doing so?

WHY DO WE NOT ALLOW OURSELVES THE TIME
TO TAKE 'TIME OUT'?

There are many genuine reasons for needing to complete jobs
and tasks, however we may also on occasion have ‘hidden
agendas’ as to why we cannot stop for a break. Some of
these reasons might be:

* EGO - Some people simply enjoy boasting about, ‘how late
they had to work in order to complete a project’ or ‘how
much effort they invested in order to complete the job so
quickly’ - this type of person is often looking to impress
others with their efforts, thereby increasing their ego in
the process.

* TIME - "I can’t stop, I just have to get this finished".
Does this sound familiar? "I can’t stop because the job has
to be finished, WHY? So I can move straight on to the next
thing, and the next, and the next etc…" this person will
find that there is always something that has to be done,
which will constantly prevent him/her from taking a break.

* THE NEED TO BE NEEDED - A mother managing the
household, kids and other chores may feel as if her
household will collapse if she were to put her feet up
or take a weekend off! By not taking a break she can
keep convincing herself that her role is crucial and the
family would collapse without her input. This may indeed
be true, but is still not a good enough reason to prevent
her having a rest!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TAKING A BREAK?

Allowing your mind and/or body to rest can help re-focus
your attention, sharpen your wits and increase motivation.
In addition, taking time out helps to relieve stress, can
aid the recovery of tired muscles and also promotes the
discovery that there is more to life than just work.

I once asked an athlete what the most important element of
his training routine was and he answered, ‘rest’. He told
me that his muscles needed ‘time’ to repair after an
intensive workout session, so he was very strict in
allowing himself enough recuperation time between training
sessions. Giving himself this time off allowed him to go on
and become one of the most popular men in his sport.

I also know from my own work and writing, that sometimes my
mind feels blank but after some time out, I can return to
the subject matter with fresh eyes and a clear mind and it
all seems much easier.

HOW LONG SHOULD A BREAK BE AND WHAT
SHOULD YOU DO?

A break can be anything from a 10-minute meditation
session to a year’s trip around the world, and anything
in-between. I define a break as, ‘something that takes
your mind off a preoccupation’. So depending on the time
you wish to avail towards relaxing you may enjoy reading,
watching a movie, cooking, playing with the kids, riding a
motorbike or driving, exercising or doing sports,
travelling or simply sleeping!

REMEMBER, WHATEVER IT IS THAT YOU ENJOY DOING:

1. Allow yourself (time off) to do it.

2. Do not feel guilty (about taking time off).

3. Enjoy the benefits (time off) will give you.

4. Understand that no matter how important you are (or
feel you are) life will continue (in the office, at
home, on the playing field) whilst you enjoy a break.

So, if you’re feeling tired, unmotivated or just in need of
a rest, don’t be a martyr or look negatively at this. You
may actually find that in reality, allowing yourself a break
will actually help you ultimately become more efficient and
effective in every part of your life.

Thank you for allowing yourself a five-minute break to read
this.

Happy relaxing,
Jennifer Summers

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

Your Body And Balance

You may recall that one of my passions is to help
people with Meniere's. This is a condition which
has varies degrees of debilitation, some of the
worst being "drop attacks". Other symptoms include
hearing loss, vertigo, pressure in the ear, and tinnitus.
There are others, but those are the "classics".

Recently, I had the opportunity to consult with a
couple of chiropractors and massage therapists,
and ask them if they thought their particular area
of interest had a connection to Meniere's. I really
wanted them to help me understand that if the body's
musculo-skeletal system was out of balance,
could the ear be affected.

I asked if misalignment or injury of the neck,
shoulder, or spine could throw everything off
balance and contribute to MM symptoms. And
they heartily agreed it could cause imbalance
and thus add to or initiate problems of the inner
ear.

They reminded me that the skull, neck, and
shoulders all had moveable parts: bones that
are "hinged" and should move smoothly and
naturally. The attached muscles and other tissues
should move smoothly in unison. However once
this motion is hindered in any way, imbalance is
created, and with it comes its many challenges.
Bones can "tighten up and freeze". Blocked or
impaired circulation can prevent nutrition and
fluids from reaching vital parts or draining them.
In some areas such as the inner ear, an
overabundance of fluids could be trapped and
thus put pressure on the balance or the acoustic
nerves. This pressure allows incorrect messages
to go to the brain and returns inappropriate
commands - drop attacks, hearing impairment,
vertigo, etc. Balance is vital in our cells, our bodies,
our lives.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Maz raised his hands in the air. "We wish upon
you this night all the strong and powerful
feelings of this time. We wish upon you the joy of
responsible behavior. We wish upon you the
strength and power of restraint. We wish upon you
the knowledge of peace and love that stems from
this moment." He lowered his hands and the village
erupted in cheers. Tim and Sharon were overwhelmed
with people coming to wish them well. The whole
night was becoming a blur to Sharon. She had never
been the center of attention like this before.
Nothing she had gone through in life had prepared
her for this.

Then the drums began a new melody and were
accompanied by other instruments Sharon could not
see. The village broke into a rhythmic chant. It
was time for Tim and Sharon to dance.

This was new to them. They had yet to dance
together. This was a first. Falteringly they
stepped out closer to the fire where the others
had been dancing. Neither Tim nor Sharon knew how
to dance what the villagers had been doing and
their first few steps were awkward. Then they
looked into each others eyes and became lost in
each other. Their movements became graceful,
enchanting, expressive. They were dancing the
dance of love. They knew not what they were doing
but were lost in the love they had for each other.

The capes they had been given for the evening
only made their movements more graceful. They
flowed and they followed Tim and Sharon. They
added a grace and beauty nothing else could. Tim
and Sharon were only aware of the beat of the
drums and of each others heart. They paid
attention to nothing else and they moved as what
seemed natural. This love was beginning to
transcend physical feelings and enter into a
spiritual plane where peace, joy and beauty
reigned. They were oblivious to the people at the
fire and thinking only of each other. That was
what this dance was about, the culmination of
their realization of love not in physical terms
but in spiritual terms.

When the dance was over both Tim and Sharon
knew they were soul mates and that forever they
would be. That did not mean so long as they were
in this world. It meant forever.

Such was the power of this ceremony. It took
young lovers past the physical attraction into a
place where they wholly realized the significance
of their love for each other. They came back from
this place knowing the beauty and joy of being in
love at all levels of which man is capable. They
knew they were in love on the physical level, the
mental level and the spiritual level. It was the
spiritual level this celebration wanted to impart
unto young lovers. They were to see the
completeness of love as it pertained to them and
this ceremony caused that to happen in all cases.

Tim and Sharon were grateful. Up to now their
physical feelings had been running their lives.
This added a whole new dimension and made it
easier to handle all other aspects of their young
love. They realized, too, that true love is
forever, that it does transcend all difficulties
and problems and that it can be even more
wonderful than what their physical emotions want
of them. They had a glimpse into forever and knew
they wanted to be there together. It broadened and
lengthened their vision of what love means and
their future together. It rendered their union
complete like no wedding ceremony ever would.

Sam and Alewka had tears in their eyes. They
witnessed this transformation as it was happening.
They saw the love Tim and Sharon had for each
other and they had a glimpse into the completeness
that love took on this night.

In fact all who were present had a tear in
their eye. No time and no human activity was ever
as touching as this one of a young couple grasping
the significance of their love for one another.
When the full realization came upon them, usually
in the dance they performed. they shone as if they
each had a halo around them.

This "implant" of realization came from the
whole evening. It came from the food and drink. It
came from all the loving well wishers who stopped
by to wish them a good future. This well wishing
was not a perfunctory thing on the part of the
village. Each was genuine right down to their
toes. In fact it was that genuine love from each
villager that began to open the hearts and eyes of
Tim and Sharon and when they were asked to get up
and dance the rhythm of the drums was almost
hypnotizing. They fell into a trance like state in
which they were permitted to see the full scope of
what love of one another meant.

Neither Tim nor Sharon would ever forget this
night, just as no one who has gone through this
ever forgets "their" night.

A man goes to a doctor for a routine physical. The nurse
starts with the basics.

"How much do you weigh?" she asks. "Oh, about
One-sixty-five." he says.

The nurse puts him on the scale. It turns out that his
weight is 187.

The nurse asks, "Your height?"

"Oh, about six feet," he says.

The nurse checks and sees that he's only
5 feet 8 3/4 inches. She then takes his blood pressure,
and it's very high.

"High!" The man explains, "Of course it's high. When
I came in here, I was tall and lanky. Now, I'm short
and fat!"
