Why do ships sport figureheads?

Do modern ships still have figureheads?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What are "probiotics"?

You've heard of antibiotics, which are drugs to FIGHT
bacteria? Well, probiotics are bacterial treatments - using
bacteria to fight illness.

What is the name of the carved woman you see on the
front of ships?

She's called a figurehead. And no, figureheads aren't
always women or even always human. Important statesmen
have also been used as figureheads, as have a menagerie
of animals, including lions, horses, elephants, snakes,
and unicorns.

Here's To Think On ...

Balance

A lovely afternoon finds one fellow and his wife golfing.
They have had a wonderful time and the man has had
a near perfect game. The final hole, by far the most
difficult, wraps around an old barn. With a terrible slice
the man puts the barn between his ball and the green.
Knowing that the strokes that it will take to get around
the barn will destroy his score, he begins to rant and
rave. His wife hating to see him ruin such a great
afternoon makes a suggestion.

"What if I were to hold open the barn doors? That way
you could send it right through the barn onto the green."

He thinks this over and decides that it will work. With
his wife holding open the barn door he lines up with
the hole and gives the ball a terrific "whack"! The ball
shoots through the air and right into the head of his
wife, killing her instantly.

Months go by, the man mourning all the while. His
friends, hating to see him in such a state, convince
him to go golfing with them. They end up at the same
course and on the final hole, oddly enough, another
terrible slice puts the old barn between his ball and
the green. Again he begins to rant and rave at what
this dilemma will do to his score. He friend, wanting
to please him, makes a suggestion.

"What if I were to hold open the barn doors? That way
you could send it right through the barn onto the green."

"No," the man replies, "last time I did that I got two over par."

Wow! Is this guy out of balance or what?

Are you like that? Do you ever get so involved with what
you are doing that you forget about the important things
like your loved ones, and their needs.

How many times does a man become so involved in his
job, thinking he is doing it for his family, only to find that
what his family really want is time with him?

Men are good at justifying their involvement by saying they
are doing it for the family. The truth is they are not that
heavily involved for the family, they do it for themselves.
No man has the right to work day and night and ignore
his family.

Think on these things. I have been this route. It is not a
good route. It causes pain and suffering within families,
especially kids. All a child really wants is time with Dad or
Mom. Do not make the mistake of thinking you are working
so hard for the sake of the family. Doing that takes you to
a place where you cannot see truth.

I have never known a company that will not take advantage
of your willingness to work more hours than they pay you for.
There are some out there who will require it, being run by
those who make money due to your sweat. Think carefully
as to whether you really want a job like that. Think hard on
whether the promotion you are striving for is really worth the
price. Think long on whether or not the extra money you
might receive will actually do the things you think.

Most of us, 99%, find that expenses rise to meet the income.
We never really get ahead. It is only when we learn to live
within out means that we get ahead. Then, too, we have
time for family. It is called ...

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

Kidney Disease

I just finished canvassing for the Kidney Foundation.
It was a great experience to help people understand
the damage it does to families, as any negative health
condition can do

Along with my daily walk, I got to see both the
neighbours and their spring gardens, plus the bonus
of a lot of fresh air.

What was interesting was the literature I handed out It
is easy to read and has little nuggets of helpful information.

Here are some of the warning signs: high blood
pressure , passing bloody or cloudy urine, excessive
foaming of urine, puffiness of the hands eyes and feet,
especially in children. It also causes frequent night
trips to the bathroom.

And who is at risk most commonly? People with Diabetes,
people with high blood pressure and close relatives of
those with hereditary kidney disease.

Kidney disease is silent and it has usually done most of its
damage before any symptoms appear. So prevention
and early monitoring is imperative.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

The fire lasted into the wee hours of the
morning. The kids had long fallen asleep, and some
parents were now picking them up in their arms and
carrying them home to bed.

Yet there were many who stayed until the last.
These ceremonies didn't come that often and the
love that was felt amongst the village was almost
touchable. It was certainly tangible unto all
present.

Tim and Sharon had not ever spent such a
night, although Tim remarked that Maz's and
Eloise's wedding night came close.

The effect of the evening on Tim and Sharon
was that their love for each other was accelerated
into the third level, the spiritual level, to
render it wholly complete unto each. There was a
solid knowing that came with that and each were
now joined as soul mates.

That pleased each of them. It lent a
confidence to their dealing with each other and
with the outside world. Now they knew what their
parents had. They both knew there were going to be
passionate moments ahead, but they both now knew
that would be easily handled.

Sam and Alewka witnessed the entire process
and, living by higher law, they knew the impact
this ceremony had on the young couple. That
pleased them as it pleases every parent when their
offspring mate up with someone they know to be
right.

From a parents point of view that is always a
wonderful experience. It is not so wonderful when
a parent is not sure of their offspring's choice.

That taken into account Sam and Alewka were
thrilled that Tim had picked Sharon, and they were
the more thrilled that Sharon had accomplished
living by higher law.

Eloise and Maz had also witnessed the
transformation. They, too, were pleased. The
family was growing and all had the strength of
higher law behind them. That meant no fights or
bickering but love amongst them only. Eloise
looked forward to having a sister-in-law.

Sharon was overwhelmed and bewildered. It was
so much to absorb in such a short while. Only
yesterday she had learned higher law. Today she
came to visit with Tim and they stayed for the
fire. It had struck her deeply and emotionally. So
much had happened to her in the last 24 hours, her
life would never be the same. It is interesting
the fears that held her back or which were
impeding her progress, now were nowhere to be
seen. They not only were insignificant, they
simply did not exist. She was mentally, physically
and spiritually part of this village and was in
love with the people here.

The fire drew to a close and Tim and Sharon
were shown the guest hut. They went in and, fully
dressed, lay down on the mats provided and slept
the sleep of angels in each others arms.

Their sleep was induced by exhaustion and in
spite of what they might have wanted to do sleep
overtook them. The following morning they were
awakened by Midnight, the black jaguar.

Tim, of course, knew Midnight. He laughed at
her licking his face and he petted her. Sharon sat
bolt upright. She had never before been this close
to a big cat. She simmered down quickly because
she "knew" on the inside this cat was a friend. In
fact, Midnight "knew" Sharon lived by higher law.
She came over to Sharon as if she were a long lost
friend and Sharon scratched her just right and for
just the right amount of time, behind the ears.

"What is this cat doing here, Tim?"

"Her name is Midnight. My sister and David
Wiley found her when they came down here on that
first trip they took. Midnight followed them here
and has been here ever since. She lives with
Boolanga and his family. Boolanga too, was found
by Sis. He had been lost because the swelling
river floated his canoe away. He met up with Sis
and David and stayed with them until he and David
could carve out another canoe. Boolanga brought
the pair of them here and here they have stayed.
Oh, they went back home for a while, but both came
back here to live."

"Had I not been into that ceremony last night
I might question the wisdom of them doing that,
but they both live by higher law and know what
they are doing. I'm glad we had a good sleep. I
was beat. That was quite a night. I don't think
I've ever had such a wonderful night. I want to go
home and share it with my Mom. She will like it."

"Do you mean immediately?"

"No, no. I mean I will tell her about it when
I get home but if there are things to do here
today that's fine. I am no longer on any timetable
except to be near you. Gee, I love you." Sharon
reached for Tim.

HA! HA! HA!

My wife and I were visiting her 95-year-old grandfather
when he asked us to take him to buy a new hat. My wife
took me aside.

"I'm worried that he doesn't have enough money, and
he'll be very embarrassed," she said.

So I asked the salesperson to tell my wife's grandfather
that whichever hat he chose cost $15. I would pay the
difference.

Grandpa picked out a hat and was charged $15. After
he left, I paid the other $45 of the price.

Later Grandpa said, "What a bargain! The last one I
bought there cost me $60.
