TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

Who was technically the first US president? (Warning:
This is a trick question and the answer is NOT
George Washington.)

How many sonnets did Shakespeare write?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What first lady carried a gun in her purse?

Eleanor Roosevelt was advised by the Secret Service to
carry a pistol with her. The advice followed a large number
of letters threatening her life after her husband,
Franklin Roosevelt, took office.

What president's wife was accused of being a spy?

Mary Todd Lincoln again! Mary had brothers who fought in
the Confederate Army. This fact led some to accuse her of
being a spy for the South.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW!™

Telling The Tough Truth

You have all had the experience of either having to tell the
tough truth...or, of having wanted to tell the tough truth.
Two things are true about this experience. It is not always
easy to tell, and it is not often easy to hear! So what can
you do to make both those things easier, and not compromise
yourself by not saying what you believe needs to be said?

First, you can be prepared. When you know that you are
heading into a situation that could be touchy or difficult,
where emotions may run high, or where harm could be done if
care was not taken, prepare yourself. Be clear about your
issues and concerns, and about your boundaries. If you have
completely thought through your reasons, reactions and
responses to the situation, you will be far better prepared to
express yourself clearly.

Secondly, be assertive rather than aggressive. Assertive
statements contain no blame and no attack. Conveying both
information and feelings objectively is respectful. Remember,
when you are speaking about your feelings, you need to own
them. Do not suggest that someone else creates those feelings
for you...they are your particular reaction to your
perceptions. When you need to tell the tough truth, take the
time to express yourself fully. Give your perspective on the
situation, your feelings about the situation and your wants
regarding the situation.

Here is an example: " I get very concerned when deadlines are
approaching and I feel that the team is not pulling together
well. It is my responsibility to bring this project in on
time and it is important to me to do to this. This requires
everyone being focused and collaborative." This example
demonstrates communication skills that lead to problem-solving
dialogue.

Thirdly, you can be specific about what you want to happen or
how you want to be treated. Whether in a work, family or
social relationship, it is important that you take
responsibility for teaching people how to treat you. If you
do not tell someone how their behavior affects you, and it
affects you negatively, then you are silently telling them
that it is all right will you. Done assertively, not
aggressively, most people will listen and respect your
boundaries. If they do not or will not, that is important
information for you. You may choose to remove yourself from
the relationship. Also, when someone treats you well, be sure
to tell him or her how much you appreciate it. Catching folks
'doing this right' is the best teaching tool of all!

Telling the truth is sometimes difficult, however, living with
frustration, dishonesty or anxiety is more difficult.
Learning to tell the truth respectfully promotes good
relationships. John Powell wrote that "The genius of good
communication is to be totally kind and totally honest at the
same time." Practice can create that genius!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Body Parts: Hands and Feet
PART 4 of 7

(Under the skin)
Now take away the skin and it's all very different! All of these
bones have a shiny whitish round area at each end. These are
condyles. Some are rounded one way and some the opposite way.
(concave and convex) That surface allows the bones to articulate
(fit) with each other. This occurs all through your body. Many
bones are hinged, meaning they can be flexible. They can be
hinged sideways, or go forward and backward. Some rotate. There
are medical terms that will describe their location and their
intended action. But what makes the attachment to the next bone?
Connective tissue. Special strong material that can support the
purpose of the joint. You can now appreciate that a hip joint
has much more weight to support than a finger joint.but each is
equally important. Some joints have pillows of cushions to help
absorb the shock or tension. That would happen in knees, and
elbows. (Also the tail bone.) If you have ever fallen directly
on your joint, elbow, or knee, you will have experienced an
unusual pad full of fluid that took ages to be re-absorbed. That
pillow really protects the joint.

Here's how many bones you have hands and feet of a healthy body
(with no "innards" removed)
Hands = 8 carpals, 5 metacarpals, 14 phalanges, = 54. Feet = 1
talus , 1 calcaneus, 7 tarsals, 5 metatarsals, 14 phalanges, =28
x2 = 56 = 110 bones

Let's work from the wrist (carpals) and the ankle (calcaneus and
tarsals).attached to the arms and the long bones of the legs.
The framework of the hands and feet are quite similar. You have
groups of bones that make up the wrist and ankle. The wrist is
made up of 8 small ones and many are different-shaped bones.
They need to be flexible, connected, and practical. The ankle is
made up of 7 bones with the same requirements. Generally the
hands and feet are padded quite similarly. There are lots of
muscles, blood vessels, nerves and nerve endings running
alongside. And in some instances, there is fatty tissue. And of
course our connective tissue again.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------

"No, Helen" answered Eloise, smiling, "I think
we've finished with having children. We just like
to be with the kids and have fun. They will grow
to be fine kids and already they are showing signs
of accepting higher law as their way of life. It's
good."

The conversation carried on for another hour
before they all thought it was a good idea to move
into the village, where there was shade, and have
a beverage.

They all sat down around the fire circle in
front of Eloise's and Mazunta's hut. The kids
stayed on the beach playing.

More conversation about things in Pinehill,
about higher law and about life here in the
village.

Then they all received a surprise.
Materializing in front of the were Sonora and
Hemno.

Eloise jumped up and hollered "Sonora" and ran
to the girl, giving her a big hug.

Everyone stood up from around the fire circle
and went to greet the newcomers.

There were hugs and kisses all around. It was
a bit awkward for Hemno, he wasn't used to it.

Everyone that hugged him whispered "Welcome"
into his ear. This was the first any had seen of
him since he decided to live by higher law.

"What brings you here? It's good to see you
guys. My it has been a very long time. How are
things at home?" Eloise was full of questions.

All Sonora could do was laugh. "Give us some
of that drink you're drinking and we'll sit and
tell you all."

There was glee around the fire circle. It was
a joy to see Sonora and Hemno again.

Sonora began telling them about life in
Africa. Soon she got onto the story of Hemno's
journey. There she stopped and let Hemno tell his
own story.

Hemno gave them every detail, except his
dreams of Sonora. He explained how he broke his
leg, how he was desperate for food and once having
established he could get food, how he kicked
himself for not using higher law. He explained how
he had taken advantage of others using higher law
to support him, and how, now on his journey, he
had to make a few decisions himself. "It is much
different making the decision to live by higher
law yourself that it is living in a family where
things are done that way and you just accept it."

"You're right, Hemno. Even when you live
amongst those who live by higher law you must make
your own decision. Each man must come to that
decision on his own. It looks easy when you live
amongst us but each must cross the veil of
simplicity themselves. Helen and I found that out,
too." Ben acknowledged what Hemno was saying.

"It is good to have you join us Hemno. I knew
you would. You've turned into quite a man. It has
been many years since I have seen you. I am
impressed." Sam Henry was impressed. The last time
he saw Hemno he was a gangling teen, clumsy of
body and foolish of mind. Today the man that stood
before him was a tall, muscular man with a regal
bearing not unlike Mazunta's. Hemno had the wisdom
of higher law and the manners of a gentleman. Sam
was impressed.

"Sonora, how are your Mom and Dad?" asked
Alewka.

"They're fine, Mrs. Henry. They asked me to
say hi to any of you I met. They are just fine.
Living by higher law has them a bit confounded.
Oh! They know how all right. It is just that they
spent so many years living as they do they see no
need to change. That's okay, Hemno and I will keep
them on their toes." Sonora laughed. "Gee, its
nice in here. Its a little cooler than where we
live. I have no river nearby and we live out in
the open. Its dry and dusty back home. This is
nice."

"Eloise is used to this and doesn't think of
it like we do," said Ben, "we think it is
paradise. We prefer it to Pinehill."

"I can see that. You get cold up there don't
you?"

"Not only cold, Sonora, sometimes we can get
six to eight feet of snow. Now, living by higher
law that is no longer a problem for Helen and I
but in years gone by that much snow was some
chore, I can tell you."

"I have never seen snow, Mr. Striker." said
Hemno. "I've seen it in the far distance, on
mountain tops but I have never held it in my hands
or walked in it."

"Hemno, we can't have that now, can we. Come
with me." Sam rose to a full stand.

Hemno rose as well and the pair of them
disappeared.

HA! HA! HA!

Man works in a hardware store, and all of a sudden one
day, a whole lot of tins of paint fall on him.

Of course, he's whisked off to hospital where they manage
to clean him up physically, but mentally there's some
definite scarring.

It was such an unusual case that the psychologist,
treating the victim, called it by a brand-new term -
Post-chromatic Stress Disorder.
