Was the movie "Jaws" based on a true story?
Believe it or not, JAWS author Peter Benchley based his
story about a rogue man-eating shark on a real series of
shark attacks that occurred along the New Jersey shore in
1916. At that time a single shark attacked five people, and
killed four of them. The shark swam up the New Jersey
coast, terrorizing beach goers, and actually entered
Mattawan Creek where it killed a young boy and the man
who dived down to retrieve his body. Just like in the movie,
resort owners were loathe to publicize the attacks (the first
one received hardly a mention in the local press). A retired
seaman who saw the shark when it first swam into the creek
wasn't taken seriously. Shortly after the attacks, a Great
White shark with human remains inside its belly was killed
by two fishermen. Interested in learning more? Check out
Michael Capuzzo's book, Close to Shore, which vividly
recreates the summer of 1916 and the rogue shark that
terrorized New Jersey beach goers.
What is a will-o'-the-wisp?
Will-o'-the-wisps are fleeting lights, blue or white, that move
mysteriously in the night. They are also known in Wales as
"corpse candles" because they are often seen in graveyards,
as well as in bogs and marshes. Such lights do exist and
can still be seen, but are not supernatural, as was once
believed. (Some people believed that to see one was to be
forewarned of your own death.) The lights are most likely
caused by the ignition of gases produced by the decay of
plant or animal matter.

Google Snags Mozilla Developers,
Fuels Browser Speculation
By Shankar Gupta
Friday, January 28, 2005
Google has hired two developers from the Mozilla
Foundation, the producer of the popular freeware
Web browser Firefox--leading many on the Web to
speculate about Google's possible plans to enter
the browser market.
Ben Goodger, the lead engineer for Mozilla Firefox,
and Darin Fisher, another Firefox developer,
announced this week on their personal blogs that
they'd be making the jump to the search giant.
The acquisition of the two browser developers ignited
speculation on the Web that Google was planning to
release its own browser, with Google watchers citing
the hiring of the two developers and Google's
registration of the "gbrowser.com" domain last year.
Fisher, who owns a piece of the Firefox source code
and is a former employee of IBM and Netscape, was
in charge of cookies and permissions for the
foundation's free browser. Goodger served as the lead
programmer for the browser. Both men will join Google's
engineering department. Goodger signed on with
Google Jan. 10, and announced his move on Monday,
while Fisher announced his move on Tuesday.
Both developers said on their blogs that they plan to
continue to be active in the Mozilla Foundation. "My
role with Firefox and the Mozilla project will remain
largely unchanged, I will continue doing much the
same work as I have described above--with the new
goal of successful 1.1, 1.5 and 2.0 releases," Goodger
wrote. "I remain devoted full-time to the advancement
of Firefox, the Mozilla platform and Web browsing
in general."
Mozilla's Firefox was released in November 2004
and touted by such media outlets as Forbes.com and
The Wall Street Journal. Firefox has become one of
the most-used open source applications on the Web,
and is seen by some as an alternative to Microsoft's
ubiquitous Internet Explorer.
According to a study by Adtech AG, a user of Internet
Explorer is four times more likely to click on an ad than
a Firefox user, suggesting that any similar features in
a Google-based browser could have significant
implications for online advertisers.
Google spokesman Steven Langdon declined to
comment on what the pair would be doing for the
company, and on whether a Google browser was in
the works. "Many of Google's products aim to enhance
the browsing experience," Langdon said. "We do not
comment on speculation on product development."

Courage: How To Find It And Be Yourself
PART 1 of 8
A Healthy Alternative To Stress
Do you think Martin Luther King woke up with all the
courage he needed to change lives? Do you think John F.
Kennedy was born to handle the Bay of Pigs incident? Do
you think Warren Buffet was born knowing how to invest
millions of dollars (I guess that would be billions!)?
None of these people were born that way but they all
found that inner courage to make tremendous changes in
our lives. I meant to mention Florence Nightingale. Did
she not quake in her boots (literally) when confronted
with the sites of war and knew she had to change her
life from one of ease to one of massive discomfort? We
all are faced with many challenges, but few of us find
that inner courage to face them confidently. Often we
dont even know this exists. But we dream all the time.
Instinctively we want to take that first step that
allows us to opens the door to freedom: to be who we
are meant to be. Its not complex, but it does take
some awareness and thinking, and eventually, it
requires a decision.
I love watching reno and cooking shows, for
entertainment and inspiration! Thats the extent of my
voluntary exposure to television. The other night I was
rewinding a tape and as the VCR needed to be on Channel
3, (I found out later that I could use Channel 4!) I
was forced to know several things about positions used
for love-making that I hadnt even considered before.
I turned down the sound, turned the TV away from my
view, but the pictures were swift and I wasnt! (They
dont teach us some of this stuff in nursing!) Back to
my point...it left me wondering if the whole world is
doing this. I strongly suspect they arent. But our
media encourages us to think that we are out of step if
we dont go along with what they present. I beg to
differ. As I walk through malls I see many outfits that
I would find uncomfortable. Not everyone is wearing
the same style
so part of our society has the courage
to be different. Same with recreational drugs
we are
led to believe everyone takes them as a matter of
course, but they dont. Once again, some people know
they can be different. It is interesting to note that
those who dont do what is seen as normal dont make
headline news. We dont even think in terms of someone
making a choice.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"I was kinda thinking I might go over to the
old gang house to see what's up. What do you
think?" Romano was speaking with his wife Oomano,
who was nursing their new daughter, Marrietta.
"I don't know, its up to you. There might be
danger there. You know what they think of you.
You're bad news to them."
"I know. I was just thinking my example might
serve to stimulate some thought, especially to any
newcomers."
Romano had been thinking this way for some
time actually. He was very conscious of his roots
and was thankful for having found higher law from
his friend Mazunta. He had been thinking that if
he could go back to the gang headquarters where he
used to be one of the leaders then he might be
able to do some more leading, this time away from
trouble and into higher law. He knew the chances
were slim but even his presence might trigger some
thinking in some of his old buddies.
Oomano had no fears of her husband backsliding
because she well knew how thankful he was for
having found a way out of that life. She knew he
only wanted to see if he could help.
"I think I'll go over to Mom and Dad's a
little later, after Marrietta has nap. Mom likes
to see her as much as she can." Oomano was letting
her husband know where she would be when he
returned.
"Thats good. I don't think I'm going to be
long. I'll meet you over there.
With that Romano began to walk back to the
section of the city in which he spent too much of
his youth. He did not want to just appear out of
nowhere. He wanted to have a look at the community
while passing through it in order to see the
changes since he left. That way he might have some
insight as to what the gang was up to.
The day was too hot and dry. Every footstep he
was kicking up dust. In order to stand being out
in the sun he had to cause a bubble of climate to
surround him so he would be cool and comfortable.
Everyone he passed was snoozing in the shade,
or sweating on a chair fanning themselves with
makeshift fans or just plain sweating in this
heat.
When he approached his old hang out he noticed
minor changes. There were some sheets of tin at
what was the entrance, the door having been broken
off entirely.
He didn't knock. There was no such thing as
formality here. He stepped inside the building. It
was an old warehouse used to store animal hides
for the leather plant down the block. It had long
ago been abandoned. The building still reeked of
the odor of skins. It was not the most pleasant of
smells, but neither was it the worst.
Upon entering he gave his eyes a chance to
adjust to the light before he moved further. As
they came around he could see the only change
inside was more garbage than he remembered. He
thought back on those days and he remembered this
area smelled this way partly because all the gang
members also used this area as their urinal. All
the meetings the gang held were in office area to
the rear of the building and/or upstairs in a
mezzanine area.
Romano could hear nothing, neither did he make
a noise. No one knew he was there yet. He began to
move slowly toward where he knew there would be
some of the gang. He was not moving fearfully,
maybe not even cautiously, but he did not want to
make any noise if he could help it.
He passed an area where there was an old
office. The door was mostly open. He could hear
noises emanating through the door. They were the
panting, rustling, heavy breathing and talking of
a couple making love. The language was the dirty
talk couples make at such times. Their passion was
about to peak for the noises became more frantic.
Romano remembered the days when he, too,
thought this kind of behavior was just fine. He
had done that many a time. He never loved any of
the girls. They were just there for the taking
whenever any of the gang members had a notion. The
girls accepted their lot as the way of life for
them. They sometimes would fight if some guy they
didn't want approached them, but they would always
do what their "man" told them to, even if that was
to have sex with someone they didn't want to.
The lot of the girls around this gang held no
future for them. When they were used often enough
and no longer held any appeal for their "man" they
would be thrown out in favor of some young
teenager who thought it was the "in" thing to be
invited into the gangs headquarters. Once inside
she soon learned that she had to make herself
available or it could get painful. None of the
girls ever left voluntarily. Once inside they were
held by fear.
