Retailers Finally Seeing The Light!

As always, Friday is one of our news days, and today
it is nice to see the trend developing, where retailers are
getting on the internet bandwagon. It would appear, from
this report below, an excerpt from eMarketer, that retailers
are discovering their futures lie in what is called
multi-channel marketing. Multi-channel marketing is
where retailer make their products available through
different channels, like stores, catalogs, internet etc.
It is apparently profitable for them to do so, and the internet
is becoming more of an influence than most
think - - Surprise!

Making the Most of Multi-Channel Retail
6 April 2004
The 2004 edition of "The Merchant Speaks" study from
the e-tailing group determines that 37% of retailers are
selling through a combination of the Internet, stores
and catalogs, whereas only 26% were doing the
same in 2003.
The number of retailers selling online only grew
from 14% last year to exactly one-quarter of
respondents this year.
Based on a 2004 survey of 300 senior executives
working on e-commerce initiatives, the e-tailing group
finds that 97% of US retailers are selling online and
roughly an equal amount of retailers are also selling
through catalogs and store channels. It is important
to note that the similar study conducted in 2003 by
the e-tailing group was based on a survey of
200 executives while this year's study is based on
responses from 300 retail executives.
The e-tailing group expects merchants to continue to
add new channels through which they can sell
merchandise, and Internet-only retailers to push their
direct marketing efforts into other arenas, like catalogs.
Multi-channel retail is key, especially considering
the September 2003 findings from The Dieringer
Research Group, which reported that not only did
consumers spend over $93 billion online in the 12
months prior to the study, but they also spent over
$137 billion offline on Internet-influenced purchases.

So, predictions about six months ago, that the internet
will disappear, look like they are coming to pass. The
internet disappearing means that we become so used
to it, like the telephone, the television, etc. that we no
longer think of it as doing something different, we
assume it as part of our day, it is no longer a big thing.
Win. lose, or draw, the internet will be a part of our
daily lives from here on out, including in countries
normally thought of as poor countries. Within the next
ten years we will be approaching complete saturation
in North America, where all the seniors who refused to
become a part of the internet, will have gone, leaving
only internet experienced people. Then we will be
doing everything over the net. Sounds interesting
doesn't it.

Just recently, I heard a very interesting discussion about
character. In fact we were made aware of the need for
each of us to decide what we stood for, how we arrived
at our lifestyle decisions, and what helped us make
these choices. They include Trustworthiness, Respect,
Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.

It might be a great idea to find yourself a quiet spot and
study the following characteristics. You may "connect"
with some or all of them. The point is that if they blend
with your values, they give you additional courage and
ideas for holding fast to your decision. Many times we
just need to incorporate them into our lives and put
them into action.
This is along the same lines as having made a decision
BEFORE you get into the back seat of a car. When you
are faced with a dilemma, and peer-pressure (which as
you know, comes with any age) is strong, your decision
is easy and stress-free. No waffling or thinking you
REALLY don't want to do that. Your preparation gives
you peace of mind.

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures

As the evening wore on the group eventually moved to
"the village", where they started the fire. Everyone came,
including the kids.
Every four hours, on schedule, Amenti and the kids changed
their shifts. Most of the kids were able to stay through three
shift changes, which meant they missed hardly anything in
the way of fun.
Nothing could create a greater bond between friends than
spending one or more nights sitting around a fire enjoying
each other. When the "each other" includes fifty people you
can imagine what a wonderful time was had by all. The
love that permeated the very air was powerful. Even
animals were attracted.
The food had been brought over and was nearby. It was
set up so animals couldn't reach it.
Although there was no music, or beating of the drums, as
in Eloise's village, there was still a fine time. Every once
in a while someone would sing a little tune, they would
tell jokes, laugh, hug each other and the night was
slipping away.
There was a sudden hush over the group. It was one of
those times when everyone was quiet, thinking of nothing
to say of do, as sometimes happens when you're in a
group. But this one was prolonged.
Those who lived by higher law knew what was happening.
Those who did not had long learned to respect the silence.
Then, there he was. Sien emerged into the circle from
the darkness.
Everyone at the fire rose and ran to Sien. Many had not
seen him for months. He was a dear friend and mentor,
and, in one way or another had influenced the lives of
everyone here. So he needed no introduction. Even
Sandra knew who he was.
The greetings over, they all returned to their places, with
Sien sitting next to Oomano and Romano, and the family.
"What brings you here so early?" asked Oomano, "It is
good to see you. I hope you will stay tonight, tomorrow
and the next day."
"That is exactly what I plan to do young lady. I didn't want
to come for 'official duties' only. I wanted to enjoy the fun
and festivities. Besides, it has been a very long time since
I have spent some time with many of these folks. I miss
them." answered Sien.
It was almost as if Sien's presence completed the package.
There was an air of completeness, as if the last piece of
the puzzle has been put in.
The kids were all nestled around their parents or adults
with whom they came. In a child's life, and that includes
teens, times like this are vitally important. This is where
they learn to socialize. They watch the adults and pattern
themselves after what they see. In this case love and
kindness were the dominant characteristics.
They participated, too, if they felt they wanted to say
anything, and their participation was as acceptable as
if they were adults. That made them feel so.
As the night wore on the group began to sing. They
would pick fun songs, then love ballads, then some
popular tune of the time.
Romano and Oomano were speaking with Eloise
and Mazunta.
"Do you think, tomorrow, you could bring your village
drummers to play for us?" asked Romano.
They all looked at him. "That's a terrific idea, Romano."
said Mazunta, "I will go and ask. If they would like, then
I will bring them. I think they will add much to these fires."
Eloise agreed. She was sitting cross legged, with the
baby in her lap. Little AliAnn was sound asleep. She
was now over six months old and long weaned from her
Mother's milk, and getting to be a pretty big girl. She did
not walk or even crawl much, yet, but she loved to be
put on the grass, where she and her Mother would play.
Mazunta would sometimes take the place of her Mother,
in the play times. He loved his little AliAnn.
The child was already showing signs of assuming higher
law as the way of life, rather than the having to learn it
by commitment as most of us must.
