ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Why do we say something is "kitty-corner"?
"Kitty-corner" or "catty-corner," a phrase we use to
describe something that is diagonal, started out as
"catercorner." "Cater" was an old term, dating to the
early 16th century, to MEAN "diagonal." When the word
"cater" was no longer in use, folks began to use a
more familiar, similar sounding word instead and
forgot the original term.
Do centipedes really have 100 legs?
No. As a matter of fact, until very recently, no centipede
was found that did not have an ODD number of leg
pairs. Usually the number varies from 15 to 191 pairs,
all odd. No one knows why. However, Chris Kettle, a
doctoral student in ecology, recently found a centipede
with 48 pairs of legs, an even number. The remarkable
discovery was presented to the International Congress
of Myriapodology in Poland and featured in the science
journal Trends in Genetics. Mr. Kettle suspects a genetic
mutation is responsible for the even number of leg pairs.

A Cracked Pot!
Author Unknown
A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on each
end of a pole which he carried across hls neck.
One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was
perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end
of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the
cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full 2 years this went on daily, with the bearer
delivering only one and a half pots full of water in his
master's house.
Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments,
perfect to the end for which it was made.
But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection,
and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what
it had been made to do.
After 2 years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure,
it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream.
"I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you."
"Why?" asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?"
"I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only
half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak
out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws,
you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value
from your efforts," the pot said.
The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his
compassion he said, "As we return to the master's house, I want
you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path."
Indeed as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice
of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the
path and this cheered it some. But at the end of tile trail, it
still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so
again it apologized to the bearer for its failure.
The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were
flowers only on YOUR side of your path, but not on the other
pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw,
and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side
of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream,
you've watered them.
For 2 years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers
to decorate my master's table. Without you being just the way
you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his house."
Moral: Each of us has our own unique flaws. We're all cracked
pots.
Some of us don't grow old gracefully, some are not so smart,
some are tall, large & big, some bald, some physically challenged,
but it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives
together so very interesting and rewarding.
You've just got to take each person for what they are, and look
for the good in them. There is a lot of good out there. There is
a lot of good in you, Ken!
Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape.
Remember to appreciate all the different people in your life!
Or as I like to think of it - If it's not for the crackpots in my
life, it would be pretty boring.
Thank you for being my crackpot friend.

Headlines & Stress - A Simple Filtering System
That Might Help You Deal With Health News Headlines
PART 1 of 5
Lately I have been flooded with "health news"! I thought I would
show you a way to filter some of this "annoyance" so it won't
overwhelm you, or cause additional stress. I question some of
the sources and much of the information. Once in a while, I
wonder what happened to "truth in advertising". Does this not
apply any more? Why is this important?
Many times I wonder what the headline actually means to a
layperson and how this affects them. Would you pay any attention
to it? How could it affect you if you or a loved one were
already affected by such a health condition? If you have just a
little bit of knowledge, how does this make you feel? Do you get
anxious and overwhelmed?
Let's pretend it's 5:00 PM and you're on the way home from work.
You're making a quick detour to the store to pick up some last
minute things dinner things. Then you're ready for an evening
with your family, helping with homework and driving kids. A
usual day so far: till two magazine headlines you at the
checkout counter "scream" at you. Headlines about heart disease,
"out of control" obesity, diets that work and some that don't.
Internet-wise, if someone had sent you a link to the MSNBC
website for health information, here's is what you could be
reading. I pulled this off just to give you a realistic overview
but any magazine rack will offer much the same selection or
maybe different topics. Same disconcerting headlines.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

The drums led the evening. They would increase tempo
and volume for such things as a dance. They would slow
and become quiet when there was someone making a
speech or when a dance was over and rest was the
order of the moment.
The drummers, long experienced at the village fire,
could control the very mood of the moment by their
drumming. It was uncanny how people reacted to the
rhythm of the drum.
The fire shut down early in spite of what the participants
really wanted. The spirit of friendship and love that
developed around the fire was very strong. Nonetheless,
they shut down early for tomorrow was a big day.
As if on cue the day dawned bright and clear, with the
sun doing it's normal job of giving off the light and heat
needed for this blessed earth and all that was in it, to live.
Romano opened his eyes, knowing this was the day he
would become a husband. He had a little nervousness,
combined with excitement. He was not altogether sure
he really knew what all this meant. All he knew is that
he wanted to live with Oomano for the rest of his life.
Oomano rose with similar misgivings and excitement.
She, too, wanted to live with her man for the rest of her
life. Her heart was a mix of love, tenderness, near tears,
joy, and apprehension.
Rising early, Eloise and Mazunta left AliAnn with Sam
and Alewka, and left. They ended up being at their
"honeymoon hut". There they fixed up any holes in the
thatching, made sure the place was clean, and cleaned
up the area for a hundred yards in all directions. Eloise
placed flowers in a glass vase filled with water. The
bouquet was the most beautiful she had ever seen.
Then, following a custom from the States, she manifested
a bottle of Champagne, and glasses. She placed the
bottle in a container with ice that would remain the day,
and the glasses on a table next to the bed.
The next thing they did before they left again for the
wedding, was to tie a big blue ribbon across the doorway
of the hut. Eloise tied the ribbon with a big bow that nearly
filled the doorway.
Standing back and looking at all they had done, Eloise
was pleased. This place brought back a zillion wonderful
memories for them both. They kissed each other with a
long, lingering kiss, and a hug that would lead them to
the bed if Eloise hadn't broken it up.
"Now, now, Mr. We had our turn. We'll leave this for
Romano and Oomano." she said.
Mazunta laughed. "Yeah, I guess you're right."
Returning to the gathering, most of the guests were just
finishing breakfast. Eloise and Mazunta pitched right in
and ate until they were full.
"Where were you guys?" asked Sandra.
"Oh! We just had some errands to run in preparation for
this day. Nothing much." answered Eloise, knowing Sandra
would soon know.
Eloise went over and picked up AliAnn. She had been a
good girl for Grandma and Grandpa. Alewka didn't want
to let her go.
Miguele came over to Mazunta. "I hope everything is okay.
We missed you this morning and I was worried you might
have run into some trouble."
"No, Miguele. Bueno (Eloise) and I just went to our
honeymoon hut, where we spent our honeymoon. Romano
and Oomano want to use it, so we just made sure everything
was cleaned up and ready for them. All is in readiness now."
Mazunta winked at Miguele, who smiled knowingly back.
The group sat around for most of the remaining morning,
just talking and waiting for the "magic hour", three in the
afternoon. That was the time set for the wedding.
Sien was enjoying himself immensely. He had not been
with these people for a great while. He especially liked
meeting with David, Pam and the kids.
He remembered back when Pam was so cautious about
higher law, and when David still thought money could get
you anything you want. Attitudes and times have changed
for both, and now Pam would not think of David living any
other way. Secretly, or so she thought, she was working
on her own progress to living by higher law.
