TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

On average, how many patents did Thomas Edison apply
for each month?
What is aeromancy?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What invention was Edison working on at the time of
his death?
Edison was trying to invent a machine that was, in his own
words, "so sensitive that if there is life after death, it will
pick up the evidence."
How did Elias Howe come up with his idea for perfecting
the sewing machine?
Elias Howe was already working on perfecting the sewing
machine when he fell asleep one night and his mind
continued working on the problem: he found his answer in a
dream. Howe dreamed he was about to be speared by
primitive tribesmen. In the dream, the spears all had holes
through them at their pointed ends. When he woke up, Howe
realized that the spears provided his answer: create the
machine so that the needle would have a hole at its tip and
not in the middle or at the base.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!
The study of ants is called Myrmecology.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
TITLE ARTICLE - - -

Adversity Produces The Best People
an article from Christian Godefroy
A wine grower named Giorgio called for his two sons
Anton and Vitto and told them he would have to test
each of them in order to decide who was best qualified
to take charge of the property when he retired.
The two young men were very different: Anton was
daring and mischievous, always smiling and friendly,
while his brother was taciturn and hard-working, but
entirely devoid of emotion.
The father gave them each a vine seedling and said:
"I want you to choose the place that you think has
the best conditions for your vine to grow. The one
who harvests the best grapes a few years from now
will take control of the property."
Anton was in no hurry to get started. "I have a lot
of time before I have to start looking around. A vine
grows slowly, and only yields grapes after four years
anyway."
Vitto knew that too, but he decided to find the best
place to plant his vine right away.
He planted his seedling on a parcel of land facing
south, on top of a rocky hill. Anton made fun of him,
saying: "You idiot, you chose the worst possible
location! A hilltop facing south make the leaves
shrivel and burn, and soil full of rocks won't allow
the roots to grow. You won't get any grapes from that
vine at all!"
Four years later the father once again summoned his
two sons so he could taste their fruit.
Anton's basket was filled with beautiful, juicy grapes,
while Vitto's basket held only a few small grapes.
Giorgio picked two grapes from each basket and tasted
them in silence. The ones from Anton's basket were
filled with seeds and their size was due to all the
water they contained.
"Tasteless," his father said. But when Giorgio tasted
Vitto's grapes his face lit up with pleasure. "These
grapes are small but they're bursting with flavor,"
he exclaimed. "Their juice will produce excellent wine.
This is very good work. How did you do it, my son?"
"I followed a simple principle," Vitto replied.
"Like people, vines only yield good fruit when
challenged with adversity."

Medical Terminology Made
Easier
Have you ever wondered how your doctor comes
up with those long medical terms and you, of course,
don't have any idea what they mean? You know the
ones - eight syllables and no common sense? It's all
Greek or Latin to you? In fact it's both, but it's fairly
easy to figure out if you know how to do it.
There are basically three parts to a word - sometimes f
our. Each word can have a part called a prefix, a suffix,
and a root word or combining form. Prefix means the
part is at the beginning of the word. Suffix means it's at
the end.
A root word means it's the "foundation"/ the root - of the
entire meaning. A combining form means it connects parts
and is somewhere in the middle. Not every medical term
has all of these, but most do.
Let's work through the word "tachycardia". This is where
you have a fast or rapid heart rate, measured when you
"take your pulse" or count the heartbeats by touching the
outside of a blood vessel at your wrist.
Now, in order to figure out the meaning, you go to the
BACK of the word and find the end (suffix) meaning which
could be "ia", meaning "condition of". Then go to the
FRONT and get the prefix
"tachy", meaning fast. The
root word is card - meaning heart. So this would be
"literally" a condition of a fast heart, but as a heart itself
isn't fast, but the rate is, it's a condition of a fast heart rate.
If this interests you, get a good dictionary and play with
this. Take some words and look at prefixes, suffixes,
and the root words, then check the meaning. You can
create your own words. To get the meaning of the prefixes
or suffixes, go to a good dictionary. We use them in our
everyday language as well. Medline has good information.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Like many folks, Mary had to ponder things a
while before she made up her mind. It came from
training in her youth where she learned to be
afraid of making a wrong decision. Folks who take
their time to make decisions usually are more
committed to them. So Mary would think long and
hard before she would support any change in
philosophy. Yet, whenever she made such a decision
it is likely she would be very hard to knock off
course.
The idea Dave and Pam Wiley lived by higher
law made this conversation intriguing for Mary.
The point was not that David and Pam were going to
live by higher law, or were trying to, but that
they already did. Mary had not seen them for quite
some time, at least as long as the time she went
without seeing Eloise.
"Mary, I saw those thoughts go through your
mind. Would you like to stop in for a short visit
with David and Pam?"
"What do you mean, El?"
"I mean, right now, would you like to go visit
David, Pam and the kids? How about you Brock?
Would you like to see them?"
"I ... I ... I don't know. Can we do that?"
Mary was uncertain of what was coming.
"I'd like that you guys. I think that would be
neat." Brock was much more willing to try new
things than his wife. Even though he had no idea
of what was entailed he was willing to try. "Sure,
let's go."
Both Eloise and Mazunta smiled. Many times
they had seen these different approaches to higher
law. There were those who were willing to look and
there were those who were much more afraid and
were cautious, almost as if there was some cost to
exploring.
Eloise stood, as did Mazunta. Eloise went over
to Mary's chair and asked her to stand. Mazunta
approached Brock with the same command. The pair
did. Eloise had earlier set the scene with the
couples children that they would remain safe for a
couple hours. Then the pair extended their hands
for the couple to take. The instant they held
hands the four of them were in the village in
South America.
"Wha ... what's this?" Mary was somewhat
shaken with the new environment.
"Mary, this is where Mazunta and I live. It is
also where David and Pam Wiley live. Come we'll
walk over to their place."
Brock was in his glory. He was full of wonder
and looked at everything.
Mary looked too, but with apprehension and
caution. The night was warm, the air humid. She
could see people moving around, kids playing and a
kind of order to the thatched huts folks called
home. The scene was entirely new to Mary. She had
never seen such a place before.
"This is our house, Mary." Eloise pointed to
the hut in which she, Mazunta and the kids lived.
She went on, "This is the area where we have a
common fire nearly every evening. It is where the
whole village gets together and enjoys the
evening. Come with me and we will walk over to
Dave and Pam's."
They began their walk. As they passed people
they were greeted with warmth and smiles.
Everywhere people were happy here. There was the
chatter of happiness, the laughter of happiness
and the play of happiness. It was the dominant
characteristic both Mary and Brock noticed.
"This is neat. You live here all year 'round?"
"Yes, Brock. This is our home. This is where
we are raising our children. We like it because
the people are happy and the life is simple,
uncomplicated. Oh! Here we are."
They were coming up to David and Pam's place.
The kids were outside playing and noticed the
group first. "Look, Mom. There's Auntie Eloise and
she has people with her."
Pam came from behind the hut and looked. "Oh,
my God. Mary, Brock. How are you guys?" Pam came
running and gave each of them a hug. "I haven't
seen you guys for so long. How are you?"
Mary was taken back. She had no real concept
of seeing Pamela here in this place. To see her
and then to feel her hug brought Mary back to a
sense of reality. Rather than the cloud she was in
Mary now had to concentrate on speaking and
socializing.
Brock loved the hug. He always had a thing for
Pamela anyway and to see her and hug her was a
privilege. "How are you, Pam? It has been a long
time. Where is David?"
"Honey! Come see who has come to visit."
David came sauntering from around the back of
the hut. "Mary! Brock! How are you guys? Imagine
seeing you two down here. I'll bet Eloise and
Mazunta twisted your arms to get you to come."
They laughed. "Not much. They were over
visiting and we got to talking about higher law,
then your names came up and before we knew it here
we are. This is a nice place David. I can see
already why you like to live here. How are you
doing Pam?" Brock was the first to start with the
questions.

HA! HA! HA!
A woman was leaving a 7-11 with her morning coffee when
she noticed a most unusual funeral procession
approaching the nearby cemetery.
A long black hearse was followed by a second long
black hearse about 50 feet behind. Behind the second
hearse was a solitary woman walking a pit bull on a leash.
Behind her were 200 women walking single file.
The woman couldn't stand the curiosity. She respectfully
approached the woman walking the dog and said, "I am
so sorry for your loss, and I know now is a bad time to
disturb you, but I've never seen a funeral like this. Whose
funeral is it?"
The woman replied, "Well, that first hearse is for my
husband."
"What happened to him?"
The woman replied, "My dog attacked and killed him."
She inquired further, "Well, who is in the second hearse?"
The woman answered, "My mother-in-law. She was trying
to help my husband when the dog turned on her."
A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passed
between the two women. "Can I borrow the dog?"
"Get in line!"
