What form of divination involves consulting the

"Necromancy" is a form of divination that involves
consulting spirits.

How did Avon get its name?

It's hard to imagine Avon, the door-to-door cosmetics
company, and Shakespeare being linked, but they are.
D.H. McConnell, the founder of Avon, changed his company's
name from the California Perfume Company to Avon when
he expanded. He chose Avon after the name of
Shakespeare's hometown, Stratford-upon-Avon.

Peter Jennings' Leave Means
Changes For Evening News
by David Kaplan,
Wednesday, Apr 6, 2005

PETER JENNINGS' DISCLOSURE THAT HE has been diagnosed
with lung cancer and will anchor ABC's "World News
Tonight" broadcast intermittently will not have an
appreciable effect on the evening news ratings race,
media buyers say. Jennings, 66, the chief "ABC News"
anchorman for more than 20 years, said he will begin
outpatient treatment next week, and he will continue to
anchor the broadcast when he feels up to it as he
begins chemotherapy, a network spokeswoman said.

Jennings canceled a scheduled speech at a luncheon for
the Television Bureau of Advertising's annual marketing
conference last Thursday due to illness, and was
replaced at the last minute by ABC colleague Barbara
Walters. He last appeared on the anchor desk of "World
News Tonight" Friday, but was said to be too ill to
work Saturday during the network's special report on
Pope John Paul II's death.

"There will be good days and bad, which means some days
I may be cranky and some days really cranky," he told
"ABC News" employees in an e-mail. Charlie Gibson--the
co-anchor of "Good Morning America," who is in Rome for
the pope's funeral--and Elizabeth Vargas will be
Jennings' primary substitutes on the evening news, the
ABC spokeswoman said.

Eyes have been focused more intently on Jennings as the
last of the "great anchormen" that dominated broadcast
network news divisions over the last two decades, as
NBC's Tom Brokaw stepped down last year and CBS's Dan
Rather left the evening news last month. In another
loss last week, Ted Koeppel, anchor of ABC's
long-running "Nightline" news show, announced that he
too would be leaving his anchor desk.

"Both Rather and Jennings had a chance to capitalize on
the departure of Tom Brokaw, who reigned in that time
slot for years, and bad luck and bad timing has hurt
them both in trying to do that," said one media buyer.

Still, a number of media buyers said that the evening
news daypart is more notable for other programming.

"To put the evening news in context with other
programming, "Wheel of Fortune," which airs at the same
time, has ratings that are 2-to-1 higher than the
news," said Jason Kanefsky, vice president, account
director, in MPG's national broadcast department. "That
tells you something about the popularity--or lack
thereof--of the news."

Or in another example of the steep decline of network
news, looking at 1982, the year both Brokaw and
Jennings began anchoring, Nielsen Media Research noted
that 72 percent of Americans regularly watched a
network newscast. Now, only 30 percent do.

The fact that all of the aforementioned anchors passed
into senior citizen status recently could present
opportunities for networks to renew the news broadcasts
to better compete with younger fare, like Jon Stewart's
popular "Daily Show" on Comedy Central, and even the
more serious 24-news cycle offered by CNN and Fox News
Channel.

"In a way, it's sad to call it an opportunity, but the
loss of these established anchors could allow younger
talent to spring up and help revive the evening news
broadcast," Kanefsky said.

Natural Insect Repellants
How To Prevent Insect Bites
PART 1 of 5

In many parts of the world, insects are a nuisance and a health
hazard. We are hearing about the West Nile Virus and think about
mosquito spraying. We want neither, so what can you do to
protect yourself...

If you listen to any sort of advertising, you
can't help but hear all sorts of experts speak about this or
that wonderful product. Still confusion reigns. We all recognize
that things are often not as they appear and on top of that, we
are subjected to activities which we discover only long after
they have happened. Although I am mainly I speaking here about
spraying for mosquitoes. If we had a choice, we probably
wouldn't want to be sprayed for "anything".

Sometimes we have a choice, but it has already been done
without our permission, in the guise of protecting the public.
So you are unknowingly exposed to these chemicals. And
this happens in many, many situations. More and more people
are now fighting back and protesting, but you can't protest
something you know nothing about. How else can you then
protect yourself? By increasing your awareness of harmful
chemicals limiting the "conscious intake" of these chemicals.
You need to use fewer chemicals and find more helpful ways
of dealing with unwanted, possibly harmful invaders. Here is
a chance to do so. And choosing natural ways of insect
repelling is one way to do this.

Dr. Mercola has a very active and popular web site.
http://www.mercola.com/index.htm It should be on your list of
favourite sites.

This is a very important subject and he gives permission to use
his information. I have included all the credits and the web
site addresses mentioned in case you want to do more research. I
urge you to do so. There are also links to a couple of excellent
newsletters for you to check out.

Natural Insect Repellent
www.quantumhealth.com
http://www.mercola.com/1998/archive/natural_insect_repellant.htm
Well summer is upon us and if you have been doing any gardening
like I have you will have plenty of mosquito bites to show for
it. Most of you, I am certain, know of the dangers of using any
insect repellent like OFF that has the chemical DEET in it.
This is a potent chemical that has actually killed people in
high dosages. This should never be used on people. There are
natural alternatives available.

One that seems to have great promise is Buzz Away. It has been
proven to be more effective than Avon Skin So Soft, Bug Guard, Bite
Blocker, Natrapel, Jungel Juice AND it equaled effectiveness of
OFF! Buzz Away is formulated with Citronella, Cedarwood,
Eucalyptus, Lemon Grass and Peppermint, pure and natural plant
extracts which repel bugs.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Hi you guys! We thought we'd find you around
the fire tonight. Isn't it a fantastic evening?"

"Well, hello Ben, Helen. Fancy meeting you
folks out here tonight. Couldn't stand the big
city, huh?" Sam was teasing the newly arrived
couple.

Everyone said their hellos and the
conversation carried on.

Alewka, of course, got up and offered coffees
all around. Those present of just had refills.

What with the new visitors the game of Kick
the Can came to an end. All the participants
wanted to hear any news. Soon the circle around
the fire pit was crowded.

"So what's new in town Ben? We haven't been
there for a while. I suppose you still poke your
nose in at the police station once in a while."

"I do, Sam, I do. And, I don't like what I
see. The boys tell me organized crime is beginning
to set their sights on our little town. It seems
drugs and prostitution are getting to be a big
business here."

"Why is that, Mr. Striker?" Sharon was
interested because she still had young brothers at
home, and she didn't think they were yet affected,
or at least she hoped.

"It seems the police force in Philadelphia
decided to crack down on that kind of activity.
The felons decided life was easier in the small
towns surrounding Philly. We aren't the only ones
affected. All the small towns and cities are. Life
has been pretty good around here for years. We
haven't had any of that kind of thing, but our
affluence invites any who think they can grab a
buck for nothing."

"What do the city fathers think of that? Or do
you know?" Sam was wondering what town council was
going to do about it.

"They don't think much of it. That is to say
they don't like it, but they are in a tough spot,
Sam. Their budget is already set and as you know
any politician is afraid to go out and raise
taxes. Yet they think they might have to if we
want to keep our town clean. They will have to
boost the police budget considerably if we want to
hire enough men to do the job."

"Raising taxes is always an unpopular event.
How about tightening the belt on some other
departments?"

"Well, everyone thinks that is the answer but
it's impossible to take enough money and still get
the job done. Can you imagine what the outcry
would be if we only picked up the garbage every
second week instead of every week? Most other
departments are stretched anyway, Sam. Everybody
tries to keep costs down. There isn't any slush
fund anywhere. The fact is we are going to have
this crime right here in our town unless the city
fathers can somehow come up with the money to
increase the size of the police force and, I fear
that will be with a tax increase, hollers and
screams or not."

"Well, Ben, that's the way in man's world.
It's funny. The churches came out in the streets
and marched against us when they first heard about
what we were doing. Yet they will only talk about
crime, they won't march against it. I think you
are right, but even if the city fathers did get
the money and did bolster the police force,
organized crime could get quite a foothold in
Pinehill by the time the police got organized.
What it really means is that organized crime will
be here to stay. I can't see any possible way for
the police get them out of town once they are here
and established. How many townsfolk are involved?
Usually organized crime can't get a foothold
unless someone opens a door."

"Sam, I don't really know the answer to that
question. The boys think that service station
operator about three miles out of town, the one
that lives in that broken down trailer on the back
of the property, might be involved. Certainly
money is quite a carrot for some of these folks."

"Little do they know that if they had all the
money in the world their lives would be no better,
but likely worse. People that do that kind of
thing will always spend more than they have, even
the educated people. Soon they are unable to keep
up and trouble begins. That's too bad, Ben. I
don't like that news. Here we were a sleepy little
town that didn't offer much. Now we are going to
be just like the big cities, problems and all."

"Yeah! I'm sure glad I retired when I did. My
job then was simple compared to what they will
face in the future.

HA! HA! HA!

A man is driving down the road and breaks down near a
monastery. He goes to the monastery, knocks on the
door, and says, "My car broke down. Do you think I
could stay the night?"

The monks graciously accept him, feed him dinner, even
fix his car. As the man tries to fall asleep, he hears
a strange sound. The next morning, he asks the monks
what the sound was, but they say, "We can't tell you.
You're not a monk."

The man is disappointed but thanks them anyway and goes
about his merry way.

Some years later, the same man breaks down in front of
the same monastery. The monks again accept him, feed
him, even fix his car. That night, he hears the same
strange noise that he had heard years earlier.

The next morning, he asks what it is, but the monks
reply, "We can't tell you. You're not a monk."

The man says, "All right, all right. I'm dying to know.
If the only way I can find out what that sound was is
to become a monk, how do I become a monk?"

The monks reply, "You must travel the earth and tell us
how many blades of grass there are and the exact number
of sand pebbles. When you find these numbers, you will
become a monk."

The man sets about his task. Forty-five years later, he
returns and knocks on the door of the monastery. He
says, "I have traveled the earth and have found what
you have asked for. There are 145,236,284,232 blades
of grass and 231,281,219,999,129,382 sand pebbles on
the earth."

The monks reply, "Congratulations. You are now a monk.
We shall now show you the way to the sound."

The monks lead the man to a wooden door, where the head
monk says, "The sound is right behind that door."

The man reaches for the knob, but the door is locked.

He says, "Real funny. May I have the key?"

The monks give him the key, and he opens the door.
Behind the wooden door is another door made of stone.
The man demands the key to the stone door. The monks
give him the key, and he opens it, only to find a door
made of ruby. He demands another key from the monks,
who provide it. Behind that door is another door, this
one made of sapphire. So it went until the man had gone
through doors of emerald, silver, topaz, amethyst.

Finally, the monks say, "This is the last key to the
last door."

The man is relieved to no end. He unlocks the door,
turns the knob, and behind that door he is amazed to
find the source of that strange sound.

But I can't tell you what it is because you're not a
monk.
