When and how did decaffeinated coffee get introduced
to America?
Do plants grow faster in the daytime because of sunlight?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
How did Noxema get its name?
Noxema, the skin cream invented in 1914 by Baltimore
pharmacist George Bunting, was originally sold as
"Dr. Bunting's Sunburn Remedy." Mr. Bunting changed the
name to Noxema after a customer enthusiastically told him
the cream had "knocked out his eczema." Thus, the cream
that "knocks eczema" became "Noxema".
How did Sanka coffee get its name?
"Sanka" is a shortened form of the French phrase
"sans cafeine".

Innocent Mistakes Can Be Embarrassing
In search of a new shower for our home, my wife and I
went to a bathroom-supply store. We discussed our needs
with a young saleswoman.
Since it was near closing time, we had to curtail our
discussion and made plans to come back the next day to
make our final decision.
Later that evening, my wife and I were at a restaurant,
where the same young lady from the bathroom-supply
store was working as a waitress.
As she passed our table, she suddenly recognized us and
called to me in a voice loud enough for nearby diners
to hear. "Hey, you're the man who needs a shower!'"
Whoooaaa! I wonder if she even knows what she said?
And I wonder how many times we do something like
that without thinking. To her she said what she would
ordinarily have said, yet she was in a different context
now and never gave a thought to the only meaning she
emitted.
It is again the matter of being aware of ones circumstances
all the time. She innocently gave out the wrong meaning
to those who do not know the situation.
It is easy to do and for that reason we need to be conscious
of where we are and what we say. This little joke reminds
me also of incorrect use of the language such as was once
shown in a newspaper classified ad where someone
advertised "House for sale by lady with big front porch."
Be sensitive as to where you are and what you say. It is
entirely too easy to say something that may offend ethnic
groups or racial groups. Your job is not to put down people.
It is to build them up. Your job is to build your own
circumstances to be what you want them to be. You don't
do that by throwing mud on your neighbors fence so his
looks worse than yours. You do that by painting your own
fence.
Same with the use of the language. Be sensitive of where
you are and speak in ways that build people up. Be sensitive
about issues that may be important to others and not to you.
And always remember ...

Natural Insect Repellants
How To Prevent Insect Bites
PART 2 of 5
How to Prevent Mosquito Bites
Dr. Janet Starr Hull
http://www.sweetpoison.com/newsletter/index.html
Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance--their bites can cause
serious complications including the transmission of diseases
such as malaria, yellow fever, encephalitis, and West Nile virus
(WN) to humans and animals.
Mosquitoes belong to the Diptera order, otherwise known as the
True Flies. There are over 2,500 different species of mosquitoes
throughout the world with about 200 species in the United
States. There are 77 species in Florida alone, and a new
species, Anopheles grabhamii, was reported in the Florida Keys
in 2001.
While there are many ways to deter mosquitoes from biting you,
some are more toxic than others. The following suggestions give
you easy ways to repel these pests:
* Use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets--just wipe on and go. This
is great for babies. (A note from Karin Henderson: this is on
our list of possible triggers for Meniere's symptoms. Please use
this with care and total awareness.)
* Supplement with one vitamin B-1 tablet a day from April
through October. Add 100 mg of B-1 to a B-100 Complex daily
during the mosquito season.
* Don't eat bananas during mosquito season--mosquitoes love
bananas! There is something about how your body processes the
banana oil that attracts these female sugar-loving insects.
* One of the best natural insect repellents is Vick's Vaporub(r).
* Planting marigolds around your yard works great as a bug
repellent because the flowers give off a fragrance bugs do not
like. This is a great way to ward off mosquitoes without using
chemical insecticides.
* Campers agree that the very best mosquito repellant is Avon
Skin-So-Soft(r) bath oil mixed half and half with rubbing
alcohol.
* One of the best natural insect repellants we use in Texas is
made from the clear liquid vanilla that is sold in Mexico. It is
reported to work great for mosquitoes and ticks, and spreading a
little vanilla mixed with olive oil on your skin smells great.
* Commercial mosquito dunks will kill mosquito larvae before
they become mosquitoes. There are fairly environmentally sound
biological mosquito controls containing no toxic chemicals. Each
dunk affectively treats up to 100 square feet of surface water
regardless of depth for about 30 days. Dunks may be broken into
smaller pieces to treat small areas. Unused and dried out dunks
retain their potency indefinitely, so you can store extras for
the long summer season. Put them in fountains, ponds, rain
gutters, flowerpot trays, and anywhere water may pool.
* Citronella soap is a product that started in the Bahamas and
Belize. The soaps are made with olive oil for moisture and great
lather, Aloe Vera to soothe the skin, and citronella oil to
repel mosquitoes. For high intensity protection you can burn
citronella incense. Mosquitoes avoid citronella and they hate
the smoke.
* Citronella essential oil (Java Citronella) is considered to be
the highest quality citronella on the market. The best quality
is steam distilled from the grass giving it a fresh, sweet woody
aroma. It blends well with geranium, cedar wood and other citrus
oils. It is 100 percent pure essential oil--no additives, no
dilutants, no adulteration, just safe mosquito repellent.
* Electronic repellents utilize one to two sound frequencies to
simulate dragonflies and other male mosquitoes, creating a
competitive environment for the blood-sucking female. These
devices come with Velcro bands for wearing on your wrist or
ankle, or on your pocket or belt. This makes for a versatile,
compact unit that you can take anywhere for protection. Some
units even have a built-in red flashlight for nighttime use.
* When all else fails--get a frog!

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Just then some car lights pulled in behind the
house. Two car doors slammed and soon Darryl and
Evelyn Sparks came around the corner of the cabin.
"Hi folks! How is everyone tonight? The night is
such a beautiful one we thought we would go for a
drive and we just migrated here."
"Hello you two. Nice to have you. Pull up a
stump and sit down. Like a coffee?"
Darryl and Evelyn sat and the conversation
kept on.
"Ben was just telling us that organized crime
was starting to move into our nice little town."
"Yes, Sam. I heard Philly was stepping down on
them and that they went looking for safer haven.
All the small towns around are going to suffer. I
don't know just how bad it is yet but we are going
to have a fight on our hands unless our town
council can do something, fast."
"That is not very likely, Darryl. Ben was
telling me there will have to be a significant
increase in the police budget in order for them to
catch it before it begins. Once they get a
foothold they will be here to stay."
"I don't understand. Aren't we small potatoes
for these guys? I thought they wanted bigger
markets because of the bigger money available to
them."
"Sure, Darryl," Ben responded, "but don't
forget there are maybe ten towns surrounding
Philly. Each of them is a short drive and the
folks in each of those towns have kids going to
school. That is where these guys want to be, where
they can sell their crap to the kids. That means
the kids are soon going to start breaking and
entering, stealing and the like, just to get
enough money to do drugs."
"Well, I hope you're wrong, Ben, but deep in
my belly I know you're right. That brings me to
some news for you folks. I've made up my mind I
want to retire, just like you two lazy dudes. I
was speaking with my staff and they think they can
put a company together with all the staff as
shareholders and then buy the paper off me."
"Good for you Darryl, but we will miss you.
You were always one of the upstanding citizens in
this town and you carried yourself responsibly.
The city will miss you."
"Thank you, Sam. I appreciate that, but
actually you are to blame."
"Me? Why?
"Evelyn and I have decided we want to live by
higher law. We have debated long and hard on the
matter. If it had not been for you and your family
and Ben and Evelyn, we would not have given it a
thought. However, you have always been a respected
member of this community and I, among others, have
always looked up to you. You don't flaunt this
business of higher law and you are right there to
help anyone who needs it. I want to do that, Sam.
Evelyn does too. I'm afraid you have a couple of
students."
"Wow! That's a mouthful, Darryl. Thank you for
the compliment. But let me congratulate you on
your decision. No matter how long or hard the
journey might be you will succeed and I would love
to work with the pair of you. I'm sure Ben and
Helen would, too. Good decision Darryl."
"Mr. Sparks, welcome. Tim just caused me to
learn higher law, not long ago. You will be very
pleased with your decision."
"Thank you Sharon. It is Sharon isn't it?"
"Yes."
"Darryl, you do realise the price you will
have to pay for that decision?"
"Yes, Sam. And we thought about that long and
hard. We don't like giving up all we have worked
so hard for, but we see life where you are and
problems where we are. We made the decision
mutually and know what it means."
"Excellent, Darryl, Evelyn, excellent.
Welcome. We will work on all those things right
away, including tonight. Have you told the kids
yet?"
"Sam, you and I went over that, remember? I
don't know what the kids will think about it. No
we have not and we see no need to rush into that.
These are our lives we are speaking of."
"That's right Darryl."
"Darryl, Evelyn, please feel free to call on
Helen and I, too. Anything you need we'll be right
there."
"Thanks, Ben. We knew we would get lots of
help. We also realize this is our decision, our
commitment. That is why I have decided to sell
out the business. Like you, Ben, I want as little
interruption as possible. I want to tackle this
without alternative."
"Therein lies your guarantee, Darryl. With
that kind of commitment you will see results."

HA! HA! HA!
A Minneapolis housewife went into her kitchen early in
the morning of April Fool's Day and found a 'Good
Morning!' sign hung from a high fixture.
The door of a cabinet had been removed for fixing.
At that point she found a sign, 'Closed for repair..'
In the refrigerator crisper was another message,
'Lettuce Pray.'
Inside the freezer was another, 'Help! I'm freezing!'
In the egg compartment she found, 'I'll bet you didn't
egg-spect me in here.'
In the sink was,'What depths some people won't sink
to!'
The dustpan had a note: 'Remember, man, that thou art
dust.'
A bar of soap was decorated with, 'Once again Ivory
returned.'
In the kitchenware drawer was, 'Hey, I've discovered
silver!'
On the glassware shelf she found: "Big Tyrone Presents:
'The Glass Menagerie.'"
Inside a glove was, 'We just glove to have you.'
