TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

How old are the Alps?

What is the biggest baby (at birth) on record?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Why do mountains look blue when viewed from a distance?

Mountains generally reflect little light because they are
usually dark in color. In viewing distant mountains, the blue
light that is normally scattered in the atmosphere predominates
in the light that reaches our eyes.

How did Hannibal take elephants across the Alps?

According to an account of his crossing, Hannibal's soldiers (on
their way to invade Europe) used hot vinegar to dissolve rock
(presumably limestone) in order to make footholds for the
elephants.

Removing The Creative Clutter From Your Head

Have you ever felt that you could really get something
wonderful and worthwhile done if you didn't have so
many things to do? Common thought.

Your mind is so cluttered with great ideas, current
projects, social obligations, long-term plans and
upcoming appointments that there is no room for
creativity. In fact, some days it seems amazing that
any thought can make it all the way across your mind,
doesn't it?

We become immobilized, unable to make progress, even
though we may be very, very busy. It's a paradox. We
are working as fast and hard as ever and still we seem
to be treading water. The shore never gets any closer.
That's because your mind works in strange ways. It has
no sense of past or future, so, that everything you've
ever told yourself you should or could do, your mind
thinks you should be doing right now. So, your mind
sets you up for failure.

I have been caught this way. It is so
self-defeating...and exhausting. So many great ideas
for projects, businesses, conversations, seminars all
rushing around in there....all chasing one another. So,
I went looking for the magic bullet that would put an
end to my misery. I looked in the obvious places: get
a new organizer, a new at-a-glance something that would
keep me on track, a new PDA to make everything work
together; clean the office, clear out the in-box. All
were promising, but none cleared the clutter from
the inside, even though my office was immaculate.
Problem: clean space but head still full. I only looked
organized.

The search continued. Finally, a colleague told me
about some ideas he had been working from that made a
huge breakthrough in his organizational thinking. OK.
I'll try anything.

First key is to get all the ideas you have--and I mean
ALL the ideas--on to paper or into your computer. ALL!!
That is one massive mind dump. Every thought, idea,
plan, project, wish, want, need, relationship, value...
and then some. It's essential to actually clear the
mind of it all in order to be able to focus on one
thing at a time.

That's the beginning. Once you have every single
thing--idea, object or piece of paper--in your in-box
or in-bucket, then, and only then, you begin to
process. Cleanse first, then clarify.

Pick up each item from the in-dumpster. Do you know
what to do with it or about it?

Decide if it is actionable. What is the next action
step you need to take on each item? The best
organizing guru I know, David Allen* says that if the
answer is 'No!' then it's either trash needing to go,
something that might need to be done later (incubate) ,
or potentially useful information that might be needed
for something later. In that case, it's a reference
piece. Makes sense. You can now manage these three
categories. If the answer is 'Yes", you have to figure
out the next action to take. David Allen says then
you have to do it, delegate it or defer it. And the
system continues.

The first and most important part, though, is getting
your mind clear of clutter so that you can bring your
complete attention to the task at hand. You have taken
care of those fleeting thoughts. You've captured them
on paper or on screen. You have decided on the next
action step for each item. Now, you're ready for
action. Your presence of mind will improve. You can
easily bring your mind to one thing at a time.

This is the key to being...and feeling...truly
organized. Stress is reduced. Focus returns. Clarity is
restored. You know what to do. You are back to
being productive and you're swimming in the right
direction. Great system!

Done! and Ready for Anything. You can get them at

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

April Is Cancer Awareness Month
PART 1 of 4

"Courage means to keep working a relationship, to continue
seeking solutions to difficult problems, and to stay focused
during stressful periods." Denis Waitley Author and Speaker

It was good to meet June again. It's amazing what great
conversations you can have at the local recycling place. As we
were both flinging magazines in to the "glossy bin", I renewed a
friendship that has held for many years. We caught up on family
things and then I mentioned she had shrunk a bit. She shared
with me that she was just going through another bout of
chemotherapy to shrink another tumor that had sprung up while
everyone had thought things had settled down again. She didn't
sound too hopeful. I admired her courage in the face of this
setback. Personally I have only had one brush with cancer, but
that was enough to know that I could probably overcome the
negative aspect, but I would never seek out the experience
voluntarily. It's take great fortitude, courage, and
determination to face a real cancer experience.

My attitude now (it wasn't always like this, unfortunately) is
to be focussed on specific goals, to be positive, to accept my
reality, and then to move forward. I honestly try to live Dr.
Waitley's wisdom. I have the quotation framed in my office and
it provides me with the courage I need to go past the hurdles or
annoyances that confront me frequently.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Ming Lu immediately went into her cooking area
and brought out a huge meal for the man. "Listen
well to this lady. She speak truth. If she say
your family is fine and healthy, they are. You
welcome to stay tonight and leave in the morning.
I will pack a big pack of food for you. Storm be
broken by morning. Eat, get well."

This time the man took Ming Lu's hand and
gently thanked her. He placed his forehead to the
back of her hand in a gesture of humility and
thanks. He was shaking from the news of what he
was hearing. The lady that he attacked spoke with
such authority that he believed what she said.

This circumstance was so new to him and so
foreign it brought on some confusion. How is it
someone could speak like this lady? How did she
know of my son being ill? How did she know we
needed food? He had to sleep good tonight and get
started home as early in the morning as he
possibly could.
He had three days walking to do.

"How do you call yourself?" Mae asked.

"I am called Ng Chiang (pronounced Nung Chang)
I live on the high plains. There is little food
there and much space. Winds like this blow all the
time."

The local customers left reasonably early that
night. The man and the two ladies were given spots
to sleep in the main area of the restaurant, much
like Mae and Susan had slept before.

The following morning broke clear and still.
The temperatures were slightly better and it would
be a good day for Ng Chiang to travel. Ming Lu had
been up early doing a lot of food preparation. She
had packed food up in little parcels so the Ng
Chiang could eat along the way without disturbing
too much of the food. He could open one parcel and
eat that for a meal.

It was the smell of food that caused everyone
to rise. Ming Lu created a breakfast for everyone
and the smell was too much. They had to get up.

Everyone sat at the same table. "How many
children do you have, Ng Chiang?" Mae was making
conversation.

He marveled at her. How could she speak
so he could understand? How could she understand
him? "I have three children. Two girls and a son.
It is my son that is ill. He caught a fever and we
have been unable to cure it."

"Your children are fine, healthy and safe.
There is food in your tent and all is well. There
is oil for warmth. Your family is fine. Fear not."

"Thank you fine lady. I am sorry to attack
you. I do not know what I was doing."

"All has ended well. Maybe we will see you
again. We are on our way north up into the
mountains."

"You no get through the mountains this time of
year. There are only two ways you can travel and
each is impassable at this time of year. Too much
snow."

"We know, but we still have a month of walking
to do before we are even near them. Will they not
be ready by then?"

"No, fine lady. The snow in the passes takes
longer to melt. There is only two maybe three
months you can get through. I go through once in a
while. I can show you the way."

"That would be nice. Do you take your family?"

"No, the children are not old enough. That is
a hard journey. My son will come when he is ten."

They were eating the bountiful meal Ming Lu
had prepared.

"You go home to your family. We will see you
in a while. Do not break camp and move. Stay where
you are until winter breaks. We will come to you
by then and we can plan our trip."

"That be fine. I must go now. I have long
journey to get back to family. Thank you for the
food, and for you hospitality. I will tell many of
what kind people you are. I have no money nor
goods to trade. I will be back before next winter
to pay my debt to you."

"Sir, there is no debt. It is enough for us
that we were able to help. Go with speed and
safety." Long Chu was wishing only the best for
this man.

With that the man took the parcelled up food
Ming Lu had prepared and bid his good byes. He
bowed many times in salutation upon leaving. As he
opened the door they could see it was still dark
outside, but the winds had stopped and the skies
were clear.

"Long Chu, Ming Lu, that was very kind of you
to aid that man, especially after he treated you
so rough." Susan observed the kindness of the
couples hearts.

"This land is a harsh land. It is our custom
to feed those who come our way. Many pay with
money some with trade, but when the weather cold
we will make sure a person is well fed. We turn no
one away. We are not alone with that philosophy.
Everybody in the village is the same. We do not
turn people away when the weather is like this. It
can kill."

HA! HA! HA!

Constantly complaining about the temperature a customer was
bothering the waiter in a restaurant. First, he asked
that the air conditioning be turned up because he was
too hot, then he asked it be turned down cause he was
too cold, and so on for about half an hour.
Surprisingly, the waiter was very patient, he walked
back and forth and never once got angry.

So finally, a second customer asked him why he didn't
throw out the pest.

"Oh, I really don't care or mind," said the waiter with a
smile. "We don't even have an air conditioner."
