Philadelphia Plans First U.S. Citywide Wi-Fi Network
Thu Apr 7, 2005 By John Hurdle
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - The city of Philadelphia will
become the largest U.S. Internet "hot spot" next year
under a plan to offer wireless access at about half the
cost charged by commercial operators, city officials
said on Thursday.
Last year, officials unveiled a pilot scheme offering
users of Wi-Fi-enabled computers access to the Internet
within a radius of about a mile of downtown's Love
Park. Thursday's announcement expands the network to
the city's entire 135-square-mile area, marking a U.S.
first.
The "Wireless Philadelphia" network is expected to be
up by late summer 2006 and available to computer users
paying up to $20 a month. Commercial Wi-Fi services run
about $40 monthly.
"People are watching all over the world to determine
whether a city of 135 square miles can become one big
hot spot," Philadelphia Mayor John Street told
reporters.
"People want to be connected and we think it is our
obligation to provide that kind of access," Street
said.
The network, based on devices attached to city
streetlight poles, is expected to cost the city $15
million to set up.
The service will cost subscribers from $16 to $20 a
month and will be available through a device costing
about $80, city chief information officer Dianah Neff
said.
The city hopes the plan will get 80 percent of
Philadelphia households connected to the Internet
within five years, up from the current level of 58
percent.
City officials estimate it will create 3,000 jobs,
mostly by creating the type of city attractive to
tech-savvy people who want to be connected to the
Internet at all times.
The plan is opposed by some city lawmakers who say the
network will cost more to build than estimated and that
the work should be given to telecom companies such as
Verizon Communications or Comcast Corp.

April Is Cancer Awareness Month
PART 3 of 4
You should plan PAST the immediate situation.past the
negative health conditions, TO the desired outcome. The
rest as Dr. Waitley states, is a matter of dealing with
the situation at hand: the difficult problem: the
stressful period. You have already faced those kind of
problems many times in your life, you can do it again.
They may not have had those scary names attached to a
particular situation, but you have been inconvenienced
many times before and emerged victorious. I urge you to
find the courage to overcome this (or any other kind
of) difficulty again. You will be so amazed as to what
you find inside of you.
As you face your challenge, (not running from it or
denying its existence) you can create your own
environment, surrounding yourself with people who want
to share your goals and your desire to restore your
wellbeing. It will mean change. Maybe different foods,
a new or different exercise program, or it may mean the
elimination of something that has been part of your
life. If it's to change a habit, surround yourself with
people who will support you. You know what I mean. If
you want to stop drinking, you want to avoid hanging
out at the local pub. If you wish to stop smoking,
avoid the employee smoking pit. (You can catch up on
the gossip later.) If you want to cut your fat intake,
avoid your friendly fast food drive through window. You
might also want to shut off the TV for a little while
and check up on the neighborhood with a quick walk.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"So you are not missionaries come to "save"
us?"
"You have had such people?"
"Yes. They come and say to us that their way
is the only way, that if we worship their God then
we shall be saved and go to heaven. Some are not
so nice. They do not seem to live what they teach.
They are full of empty words. They seem to come
from different religious groups and have the same
general approach, yet they do not do as they say.
It is confusing to us. We cannot see our Maker
having different laws and different ways for
different people. If our Maker wanted a way of
life for us would that not be the same for each
man? What religion is right? Is any religion
right? From what we see we do not see what is a
path for all men. One comes and says 'Take this
path.' The next comes and says 'No, take this
path.' Still another comes and says do this or do
that. In none do we see any sign of God except in
you. You do not come here to teach us, yet you
give. You do not come here to tell us words, but
to help us live and you do not want anything in
return. Even when you are attacked you fight with
love. To you all men are equal and all men have
God beating within their breasts. You show no
interest in preaching but will help if I ask for
help. You will teach me?"
"I cannot teach you, Long Chu. The lessons you
learn will come from inside. All I can do is show
you the path and we will talk about all the things
you should see and know, but it is from within you
that your lessons will proceed. That is why you
must even doubt what I say until you have
confirmation from inside you. I am not here to
convert you to a way of life that is contrary to
your Maker. I ask only that you go inside to seek
your Maker."
"That is what I mean. You send me to where I
can get answers I trust. You are not teaching me
any book learning. You may help me find my Maker
but thereafter I am on my own. You do not say 'Do
as I say, not as I do." You say 'Do as I say and
as I do.' The missionaries, they come and say this
is what Jesus say, worship him. Then they do not
do what Jesus say. We even have that from those
that teach Buddha and those who are Moslem. They
do not seem to do as their teachers say. They keep
saying 'Oh he must have meant this.', when in the
book they show you it does not say that."
"I know Long Chu. We have found that out all
over the world wherever we go. I want you to do
what the book says. If Jesus says to do something
that is what I want you to do. I represent no
organized religion. I come from my Maker and I
want you to learn to do that too. However, Long
Chu, it takes steadfast commitment against which
there is to be no alternative. You must think on
that for you must give yourself to your Maker
first and always before anything else."
"That is what I read in some of the books the
missionaries say is the way. They do not say to do
that. They say to do it another way. They seem to
have a plan of their own."
"As we proceed it will be up to you to check
each step along the way. I do not want you to
follow me or the things I say unless you are told
from deep inside you should do so. Understand?"
"Yes, Miss Mae. I understand."
"How about you Ming Lu? Is Long Chu speaking
for both of you?"
"Yes. He does. We speak of you much when you
went away. We see how you give to the people when
you see need. You give without anyone asking. You
have helped us and we think you are on the right
way. We want to learn what you know. Please show
us the way."
"The first point you should understand is that
your Maker has set in motion higher laws by which
man can live, breath and have his being. If you
understand that then the job is to find, learn,
understand and apply those laws. The price you
must pay is to give up all you have in favor of a
relationship with your Maker. You must place your
Maker first. Then you must learn to believe in
higher law. Jesus said that if you have faith and
doubt not, then you shall be able to do all
things. The key is to get to a point where you
doubt not. At that point you will have crossed the
veil of simplicity and you shall be a master. That
is the goal of your learning."
"It sounds hard."
"No, Long Chu. You live in a hard land and you
must work much harder for your living than most
men in earth. This work is easier than what you
presently do just to stay alive. Tell me what is
near and dear to you. What is it that you would
not like to lose?"
