ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

What is "Quidditch"?

Bet you thought wizards just hung around the library for fun.
Not in the Harry Potter universe. Quidditch is the most popular
sport of the wizarding world. It's played on broomsticks and
involves four balls: two Bludgers, the Quaffle, and the Golden
Snitch. There are three hoops at each end of the field which the
chasers try to get the Quaffle in. The keeper tries to stop them
from scoring. The Bludgers fly around and try to knock the
other team off their broomsticks. The two beaters try to hit the
Bludgers at the other team. Each Quaffle score is worth ten
points. The Golden Snitch is worth 150 points and the game
is not over until it caught by the seeker. There are 700 possible
ways to commit a foul in Quidditch, all of which occurred in a
World Cup match held in 1473.

What does the "J.K." in J.K. Rowling stand for?

"Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling (pronounced "rolling") is,
perhaps, the most popular children's book writer at present.
The "J.K." is short for Joanne Kathleen.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
-----------------

For Every Action ...

When the ice-maker on our refrigerator broke, my
husband dropped by the local hardware to find the part.
Because the sun was so bright that day and the interior
of the store was dark, his eyes hadn't quite adjusted
when he walked in. He accidentally stepped on the foot
of a woman examining some samples. She screamed,
causing my husband to jump sideways into a display
of fireplace tools that went crashing in every
direction. Unnerved, he stumbled over to the service
desk, and as he put his hands on the counter, he
flipped over a bowl of marbles, scattering them
everywhere.

After taking a deep breath to calm himself, he
announced to the wide-eyed woman working there, "My
refrigerator doesn't work."

She replied, simply, "I don't doubt it."

Ever have those days? When you do you might just as
well let them happen.

Those are the days when you relax, take it easy, make
no plans to accomplish anything. It seems strange but
every once in a long while those kinds of days do
strike. That's when you just have to laugh at yourself
and have fun with it.

Yet it brings to our attention the law "As ye sow, so
shall ye reap." or "The chickens you send out are the
chickens that come home again." or "What goes around,
comes around."

Every time we perform an action we are telling the
world who and what we are. Those who observe, form
judgments. So it behooves us to consider our actions
before we take them. When we keep the "law" in mind we
can act in ways that will bring to us the life we want.
It is good to know these laws.

Still, we will all be a clutz once in a while and
laughter takes away the sting.

I once had a man tell me that our chief responsibility
was to be happy. He knew that when one is happy he/she
is spreading good tidings. That enacts the law in your
favor and life can be good.

One more thing associated with this topic is the
observation of Ralph Waldo Emerson; "Your actions speak
so loudly that what you say to the contrary I cannot hear."
Consider that. Watch others and watch what they do as
compared to what they say. Watch yourself and keep away
from that trap. Do as you say. In other words BE the
person you SAY you are.

Life gets better when you understand that ...

Headlines & Stress - A Simple Filtering System
That Might Help You Deal With Health News Headlines
PART 1 of 5

Lately I have been flooded with "health news"! I thought I would
show you a way to filter some of this "annoyance" so it won't
overwhelm you, or cause additional stress. I question some of
the sources and much of the information. Once in a while, I
wonder what happened to "truth in advertising". Does this not
apply any more? Why is this important?

Many times I wonder what the headline actually means to a
layperson and how this affects them. Would you pay any attention
to it? How could it affect you if you or a loved one were
already affected by such a health condition? If you have just a
little bit of knowledge, how does this make you feel? Do you get
anxious and overwhelmed?

Let's pretend it's 5:00 PM and you're on the way home from work.
You're making a quick detour to the store to pick up some last
minute things dinner things. Then you're ready for an evening
with your family, helping with homework and driving kids. A
usual day so far: till two magazine headlines you at the
checkout counter "scream" at you. Headlines about heart disease,
"out of control" obesity, diets that work and some that don't.
Internet-wise, if someone had sent you a link to the MSNBC
website for health information, here's is what you could be
reading. I pulled this off just to give you a realistic overview
but any magazine rack will offer much the same selection or
maybe different topics. Same disconcerting headlines.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

Mae and Susan remained with Long Chu and Ming
Lu for another week. The days were sunny and
bright all that time, although cold.

Susan went out for a walk one day, just to see
the town. There wasn't much to it. She thought it
appeared more like a collection of buildings just
dropped down into the middle of nowhere. She could
see no logical reason for the towns placement. It
was not on any particular route anywhere. There
was no industry, no farming, no mining or any
other economic reason for it to be here. It was
just here.

As she stood outside the restaurant door she
looked to one side and then to the next. There
were two or three buildings on each side and
across what might be called a street there were
another half dozen. The buildings were not
situated in a row or straight with a street, but
plopped down any which way.

Susan could see no signs of vehicles. She
could see where folks walked, here and there. The
snow was up past her knees and the walking was
tough. So folks walked in each others tracks.
There was a fair path leading to the restaurant,
but other than that it seemed that folks only came
out of other buildings. There were no paths worn
as deep or trodden as much as the path to Long
Chu's.

She decided to walk through town just to see
what she could see. All the building were very
low, only high enough to permit people to walk
inside them and even at that you would have to
crouch a little in most of them. The snow was as
deep on each roof as it was on the street. That
accounted for so many support posts inside these
buildings. The roofs had little if any slope to
them and Susan could see no drainage systems. Any
snow that melted or rain that dropped simply
dropped from the edge of the roof. That could
present quite a problem come spring because of the
freeze/thaw cycle.

Then she remembered all the doors in this
country seemed to open inward, unlike the way
things were done in public buildings back home.
With doors opening inward they were not affected
by the snows or water that froze just outside the
door. A door opening outward would not open at
some times because of this condition but a door
opening inward would always open.

Susan walked along noticing that some places
had shelter for animals. It did not afford much
but a building with three walls and a roof would
at least help keep the wind away. She could not
see many animals but maybe these were places that
permitted travelers to shelter their animals. Then
again, maybe this was a hard winter and the
animals were slaughtered for food.

If one were walking on a summer day it would
not take five minutes to pass through this town.
Maybe calling it a town was a misnomer. Maybe it
was merely a settlement of sorts.

Life here was hard. Susan was in awe of the
people that lived here. It was a wonder they could
eek out a living from this harsh land. The land
itself was not for the growing of crops. It was
too shallow, too rocky and too cold for most of
the year. Summer here consisted of the occasional
warm day that still required folks wear heavy
jackets. The wind was always blowing and it was
always cold. It blew at times with such force it
would take the tops of any vegetables if planted.

Sue was glad she came on this journey because
of things like this she could see with her own
eyes. If she had come on a "tour" or on a trip
that was in mechanized transportation she would
miss all these nuances of life in this land. She
was glad she and Mae had decided to walk. There
was much more to this land than just hitting the
highlights. The people were much more interesting
and actually gave life to the land. To look out
upon the tundra was to see nothing. But to look
out upon it knowing people lived out there and
somehow found food and thrived out there is what
made this scene meaningful.

Susan headed back to Long Chu's. She had seen
what she came to see. Once she was again on the
path into Long Chu's it was easier walking. She
approached the door, crouched down to miss the
roof overhang and opened the door. The heat from
the building wafted her face and the odours
smelled of cooking inside. They were inviting and
she stepped inside quickly so as not to lose too
much heat from the place. Closing the door the
room was dark and it took some time for her eyes
to adjust.

She could hear voices over by the makeshift
bar. Mae and the kids were playing some kind of a
game.

"Wow! It's cool out there." Susan shook like
she were frozen. The kids laughed.

Answering machine messages

Well I finally got an answering machine. Now how does
this thing work? Hmmm. Press record button, I did that,
and the light should be on. I wonder why it's not
working right. Hmmmm, I wonder what this button does...

How do you leave a message on this thing? I can't
understand the instructions. Hello. Testing 1 2 3. I
wonder what happens if I touch this... YOW!

You know what I hate about answering machine messages?
They go on and on, wasting your time. I mean, all they
really need to say is, "We aren't in, leave a message."
That's why I've decided to keep mine simple and short.
I pledge to you, my caller, that you will never have to
suffer through another long answering machine message
when you call me...

Owner is a hard-to-reach person: Yes, I finally got an
answering machine. (To Handel's Messiah:) Alleluia!
Alleluia! Please leave a message at the tone.

Drawling granny voice: Way back in the winner of
fifty-two, we didn' have fansy gadgets like no
answering machine. You jusht had to call and call until
somebody got home. Now, shum people, dey shay dey don'
like them, but I say it'll shave you a lotta trouble if
you jusht leave a meshage. Thanks a lot.

You have reached 256-5335. We picked this machine up at
a garage sale in "as-is" condition. You can try to
leave a message on it, but we are not sure it will be
recorded. If we don't return your call, it means the
machine did not work. C'mon... you can do it... just a
little one. That's the way... just a little beep, just
a little one. C'mon... good boy... here we go... like
this - beep, just a little one, beep, c'mon... There
you go!
