TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What town changed its name in 1950 to "Truth or Consequences"
in order to win free publicity promised by Ralph Edwards,
host of the hit radio show "Truth or Consequences"?

Who was the first woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

When did Great Britain become the United Kingdom?

The union of England, Scotland, and Wales formed the
"United Kingdom of Great Britain" in 1707. The "United Kingdom
of Great Britain and Ireland" was formed in 1801. But not until
1945, after most of Ireland had gained its independence, did
Great Britain's official name become the "United Kingdom of
Great Britain and Northern Ireland."

How did California get its name?

California was actually named after a female ruler in a popular
Spanish novel. Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes thought
the land was similar to that of an imaginary island in a novel
he'd read, ruled by a woman named Calafia.

What Are Friends?
by Ken Darby

Have you ever noticed how things are more enjoyable
when you share them? Have you ever noticed how
nice it is to have someone to talk to when you want
to talk? Have you ever noticed how nice it is to be able
to lean on someone when you are tired and need
an "ear" to listen and a "shoulder to lean on"?

I guess that is what a friend is, a person who fits all
those things.

When one is first married life is pretty exciting. There
is, of course the sexual attraction thing, but there is
also the making of a life together. Things are busy.
Kids come along and things get busier yet. Life is
rewarding, challenging and offers many times
circumstances to be overcome.

As time goes by life mellows out and challenges are
not quite so severe. Then is when you begin to notice
your partner in light of friendship rather than someone
you live with, a mother or father to your kids and your
sex partner.

Some may think this is a sad time of life, when you
look at your partner as a friend more than a sex partner.
In my books it is one of the most cherished and
rewarding periods we go through. I, for one, can honestly
tell you there is no other person in the world I would
rather have as a friend to share things with than
my partner.

Now, there are other friends too. There are those you
meet along the way with whom you have more than a
passing interest. You can share things with them
as well and being outside your daily living situation they
can frequently offer thoughts and ideas from objective
points of view.

In that department I am more than fortunate. Indeed, I
am a rich man for I have friends whom I consider
confidants, and people for whom I would sacrifice
and who would do the same for me.

I miss these folks when I don't speak to them for a while.
They are always in my head and heart in terms of thoughts
and feelings and it is amazing how much I look forward
to impending contact with these people.

They add a joy to my life. They add meaning to my life.
They, often, in all ways become my "Board of Directors".

I had a friend go away the other day, caught up in some
family business and I could not believe how much I missed
that friend. I am glad the friend is back, if only to make
contact again.

These are some of the things friends mean to me. There
may be other things friends mean to you, yet, if you are
able to enjoy them in light of these things you are most
fortunate.

I have heard it said that if you are fortunate enough to
have one friend you are a rich person. I believe it.

A friend can enrich your life to a point of euphoria. A friend
can help sustain the richness of life just by being there.
A friend can add meaning to life without which there is
only a deep dark hole.

Take time to ask yourself ...

What Are Friends?

Headlines & Stress - A Simple Filtering System
That Might Help You Deal With Health News Headlines
PART 3 of 5

In the long run, will this headline really matter to you?
Probably not, but it does catch you off guard...and that now
leaves you unprepared and maybe a bit more vulnerable to stress.
Before you go into panic mode and feel your heart racing, you
need a lot more information and it won't come from these
articles. So avoid the headlines if at all possible...or try my
simple "filters". This is similar to the filter on your email
program. It removes unwanted information and takes it away to a
remote area (delete bin). Here is how it works. We all have
built-in systems of desires: likes...and dislikes. Long ago, I
discovered that a "like" is something you would be good at if
you developed this behavior or characteristic. A "dislike" is
something you're not going to be good at. So I suggest you
"don't go there". It's too time-consuming to make your bad
habits into good ones. (Use the time to become better at what
you like.) Who said you had to be perfect at everything? So know
what you like. Make it a point to really learn your "likes".
Then commit to doing and having more of those.

Next, discover what you don't like. Commit to eliminating those
and then preventing them from entering your life. Make a pact
with yourself not to violate this new set of rules that provides
you with such powerful peace of mind. I guarantee you will feel
much more in control and relaxed. Be polite, but be adamant that
no one will get past this protective wall by imposing their
rules on you.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

Those harsh rules did not apply to Mae and
Susan, of course, because of living by higher law.
Yet higher law did not prevent them from seeing
just what life was like in this land.

As stark, treeless and bare the land was it
had a beauty that could be described as
uncluttered. It brought to mind thoughts like
peace, freedom from the "busyness" of life,
oneness with one's Maker. It was a wonderful land
in which to meditate and become one with your
Maker.

The two ladies trudged northward, through the
heavy snows. Spring was fast approaching and the
wanted to get to the foothills of the Himalayas
and there wait for passersby. They felt sure Ng
Chiang would show up and lead them through the
passes to Tibet. As was their original plan they
would then proceed south into India to New Delhi.
From there they would either leave for home or
make other plans.

The present trek was seemingly uphill all the
way. It wasn't as in going up a steep hill. It was
more like the general elevation of all the
surrounding land getting higher. It was a subtle
thing that was sensed rather than seen.

The pair of them stopped for a while and
looked behind them, from where they had just come.
They had left no tracks, of course, what with
their "bubble" of environment around them. They
looked out upon the tundra and their sense of
elevation was proven right. As they looked back
they could see for miles upon miles as the land
gently receded from them. With all the snow they
could not see the town any longer. The snow on the
roofs of the buildings was great enough and the
buildings themselves were low enough they were now
invisible to the naked eye.

They had walked enough this day and decided to
make camp. They cleared an area around them and
kept it windless and warm. They created a fire to
sit around and chatted away the early evening. The
sun was only up until 5pm at this time of year,
here. It did not rise until 9am in the morning so
the nights were long. Midsummer that was all
switched around but for now the nights came early.

The pair of them heated up the food Ming Lu
insisted they take with them. It was good. Ming Lu
was a wonderful cook. She had a way with food
preparation.

"I shall miss those folks. I enjoyed their
company very much. " Mae observed.

"You bet. I loved those kids. I wonder how
folks are getting on at home?"

"I was wondering that myself, Sue, but we
haven't been away that long yet. Let's leave that
trip until a little later."

"Sounds good to me."

"Do you think we should go see Ng Chiang and
his family?"

"That's a good idea, Mae. Why don't we do that
tomorrow?"

"Okay. That's a plan."

With that the pair lay down on the prepared
beds and went to sleep. It had been a long day for
each of them.

The following morning broke with a storm
brewing. It had not yet begun to blow or snow but
the clouds were building and one could see that
winter was going to let folks know of it's
authority, even if it was the time of year when
spring was beginning. It was as if winter wanted
to keep everyone reminded so they would not forget
who was boss in this land.

"I think we will be in the midst of a blizzard
before noon." Susan suggested.

"I suppose we should simply get to a place
where we could see Ng Chiang's and then proceed on
foot."

"That might be a good idea." Sue thought.
With that they appeared less than a mile away
from Ng Chiang's tent. The day was darkening and
by the time they reached the tent they could
hardly see it. The winds had come up and the snow
had started so heavy they could hardly see ten
feet in front of them.

Upon reaching the door of the tent they
hollered. "HELLO THE HOUSE"

Ng Chiang opened the flap. He had a knife in
his hand, ready for anything that might be out
there. He was shocked and surprised to see Mae and
Susan.

"Come in. Come in. I did not expect you today.
Look at this storm. How did you get here? It is a
very long walk from the town."

"It is a long walk but no longer for us than
for you." Mae said.

"That is right. Come meet my wife and my
children."

With that Ng introduced his wife and his two
kids. All looked well and healthy.

HA! HA! HA!

A man suffered a serious heart attack and had open
heart bypass surgery. He awakened from the surgery to
find himself in the care of nuns at a Catholic
hospital. As he was recovering, a nun asked him
questions regarding how he was going to pay for
services.

He was asked if he had health insurance.

He replied in a raspy voice, "No health insurance."

The nun asked if he had money in the bank.

He replied, "No money in the bank."

The nun asked, "Do you have a relative who could help
you?"

He said, "I only have a spinster sister who is a nun."

The nun got a little perturbed and announced loudly,
"Nuns are not spinsters! Nuns are married to God."

The patient replied, "Then send the bill to my
brother-in-law."
