When is Grandparent's Day?

Where is the hottest place in the US?

What actress was awarded a patent for a communications
system to control torpedoes?

Hedy Lamarr was granted a patent (with partner George Antheil,
a composer) in 1942 for a communications system to control
the movement of torpedoes.

When is Children's Day?

According to my mother, EVERY day is children's day. At
least that's the response I always got when I whined about it
as a kid on Mother's Day. But in Japan, there really IS a
children's day. It's called "Kodomon no Hi" and it occurs
every May 5. Originally a day to pray for the healthy growth
of boys, it's now celebrated by flying carp-shaped streamers -- one
streamer for each member of the family. Dolls of samurai
warriors are displayed and rice dumplings wrapped in
bamboo leaves ("timaki") and rice cakes wrapped in
oka leaves ("Kasiwamoti") are made.

What is Universal Children's Day?

Also called International Children's Day, November 20 is
celebrated as the international day for children. The United
Nations General Assembly recommended in 1954 that all
countries institute a Universal Children's Day. The holiday
is to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and
understanding between children and of activity promoting
the welfare of children around the globe. November 20 marks
the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of
the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the
Rights of the Child, in 1989.

Cleaning, Disinfecting, and Sterilizing…
A Few Basic Essentials To Keep In Mind
PART 1 of 12

Do you know what each process means? Do you know when
to use each process? Do you know how to use related
products safely? Disinfection, sterilization and
cleaning are terms that are frequently used
incorrectly. Knowing how each process works may keep
you safe and healthy. Please use this information as an
educational resource only. If you would like to learn
more, please seek out qualified professionals. There is
much misinformation around. And as things in the health
care field changing very rapidly, it is difficult to
keep up with current knowledge.

These terms have specific meanings. Each needs to be
understood, used properly and used with caution.
Because our lives as so fast paced now, we seek instant
results. Sometimes we use what we think are appropriate
measures, where in fact we are setting ourselves up for
possible long term problems. Therefore I want to
discuss cleaning, disinfection and sterilization in a
several ways: what the term means, how and when to use
the processes. I will include some precautions.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

The way life worked within this small world
was the typical way of the Mongol. Ng, the male,
was the undisputed boss. What he said, goes. Once
that was established he could then keep his
immediate charges in line that safety and harmony
were to prevail.

Ng was a model of patience, tolerance and
peace, with a stout heart and a willingness to
risk even his life to protect those he loved and
for whom he was responsible. He was absolute
master within these walls and with these people.

As according to custom Chi Sang had the duty
of having his children, raising them and providing
all the food for meals and doing the household
chores. The better she did this the more of a
jewel she was in the crown of her mate.

Ng, of course, aided in the providing of the
food. If it was meat from a fresh kill he would
ensure it was properly dressed, hide removed, and
ready for Chi Sang. It was her responsibility to
prepare, cook and store the meat. It was also her
responsibility to stretch it as far as she could
make it go. In the winter that was easy. Meat
could be kept outside, frozen. Stretching in meant
the family had lots of stews, broths, soups or
stir frys where vegetables, when available, were
more plentiful than meat in any meal.

In this weather, because it lasted so long,
the family's supply of vegetables was depleted.
They could only transport so many as they moved
from place to place, and that amount did not last
too long when they were caught out here alone.

Mae and Susan became aware of that problem and
caused fresh leeks, grains and sorghums to be
available. The more of these Chi Sang used the
more were "resupplied". So now she had a never
ending supply of vegetables.

The morning came early and all rose, well
rested. Then Ng declared this a special day.

When the occasion called for it, such as with
the appearance of visitors Ng would bring out a
special drink the Mongols liked. It was fermented
mares milk. He served it to the two ladies and the
rest of the family in small little cups that held
maybe 2 ounces. This was held as a very high honor
within a Mongol families order of events. He
poured only one cup each and put the rest away.
This was not a beverage they used to become drunk,
but to celebrate.

Chi Sang went out of her way to cook up a
mighty meal in keeping with this little
celebration. It included lots of meat and
vegetables, rather than a sparse amount. This was
an occasion. The family needed this and they
needed the celebration.

The children within the family were boisterous
boys. While they liked to have fun wrestling like
bear cubs, they, like bear cubs instantly did what
their father or mother said. Even in the midst of
rollicking around and even when it was hard for
them to hear they would instantly respond to the
slightest command from their parents. They were
taught to do so because failure in that could well
mean their death or injury. The parents would not
inflict such. The land would. Children were made
to listen and respond immediately because the
harsh land in which they lived could take a life
in a flash. There was no place in the Mongols
world for undisciplined children.

Mae and Susan quietly observed the family and
the dynamics within. They were pleased. Some
Mongol men were not as kind as Ng. In the Mongol
world they, too, had personalities that spanned
the gamut of men's foibles. You had the nice,
kind, loving, strict, peaceful, fierce and stable
kind such as Ng and you had the mean tempered,
caustic, vicious warlike kind. Plus you could find
any personality type in between. What you will not
find in the Mongol world is a weak milquetoast.
Whenever such a personality appeared it would
often disappear with sickness or illness just as
fast. The Mongol life demanded much of its men and
one thing not tolerated by the clan or the land,
was weakness.

Children at a very early age were taught to
handle horses as well as mature men. They would
begin when they were four and by the time a boy
was six he was expected to be an expert horseman.
They were.

The women too, had to mature early, at least
in attitude if not in body. They were cast almost
immediately into the chores of food gathering,
storage, preparation and the like. They were
trained early by their mothers as to what they
were expected to do.

While life, as you and I might think on it,
appeared hard, it was not for the Mongol. They
became so used to it that they could not envision
life any other way. A Mongol from the steppes of
China would not survive in the mellow climate and
soft behavior of the south.
