TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
What "Ma" was the head of an infamous criminal gang?
When did Mother's Day first come into being?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Can fish live in deserts?
Surprisingly, yes. Fish can even live in Death Valley, one
of the harshest deserts in the United States. Thousands of
years ago, an ice lake covered what is now Death Valley.
That vanished lake is still around in the form of underground
reservoirs that feed small springs and pools. A few Ice Age
survivors, the rare pupfish, have adapted to survive waters
that can heat up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. You have to
adapt to survive, and these fish prove it.
What "Ma" was one of the first female superheros?
Mathilda "Ma" Hunkel, a.k.a. The Red Tornado, was one of the
first female superheroes and the very first female to become a
member of the famous "Justice Society of America." Appearing
in "All-American Comics" in 1939, Ma was the mother of Scribbly,
a boy cartoonist who appeared in a humorous series by
Sheldon Mayer. In issue 20 of the All-American, Ma stole the
spotlight from her son when, inspired by his hero-worship of the
male superhero Green Lantern, she donned a pair of red longjohns,
a cape, and a saucepan to become "Red Tornado." As Red Tornado,
she successfully fought a criminal protection racket that was
plaguing the neighborhood. Unfortunately, when the male
superheros first met to form the famous "Justice Society of America,"
Red Tornado wasn't invited. She crashed the meeting anyway,
entering through a window. Ma Hunkel never participated in
a Justice Society case, but her presence at the meeting was
enough to earn her membership in the JSA and make her the
first female JSA member. The second female member was
the more-famous Wonder Woman.

Ford Sponsors AOL Latino City Guide
by Wendy Davis, Monday, Apr 18, 2005 6:30 AM EST
AMERICA ONLINE LATINO TODAY LAUNCHES a new
Spanish-language guide to 16 U.S. cities, with Ford
Motor Co. as the exclusive sponsor through the end of
the year. With this initiative, dubbed "Hecho Para Lo
Que Viene," -- which translates to the Ford Motor Co.'s
slogan "Built For The Road Again" -- Ford cements its
relationship as one of AOL Latino's major advertising
partners. The city guides, which will include
information in Spanish about music, restaurants and
events in major cities including Miami, Chicago, Los
Angeles, New York, Houston and San Antonio, will be
available Web-wide through AOL.com, and to subscribers,
through the English language city-guide area and
through AOL Latino.
The feature's hub page is divided into five different
sections, each sponsored by a different type of Ford
vehicle, said Peter Blacker, vice president,
multicultural and international, AOL Media Networks.
The community area, is sponsored by Ford's Focus, while
the "Your Voice," section is sponsored by Mustang, a
road trip section is sponsored by Freestyle, a section
devoted to international events is sponsored by Ford
500, and a section devoted to information about
volunteer or charitable opportunities, such as tsunami
relief, is sponsored by the F-150.
In addition to the ads that will run alongside the
editorial content, the site will occasionally include
rich media page takeovers, Blacker said. He added that
the hub page likely will carry video content, including
streaming video Ford commercials.
Ads that will run on the site were created by Zubi
Advertising's digital arm, Zubi Digital, based in
Miami.

Broadband, Bluetooth, and Brands Away From Home
by Seana Mulcahy, Monday, Apr 18, 2005
I'M WRITING TO YOU WHILE I'm holiday. It is amazing how
I am spoiled by the many amenities and conveniences of
the United States. I just had to pay to get online and
my connection is slooooow. If you are reading this, you
are used to life with fat pipes. The fact that
broadband technology in the United States is over the
50 percent mark probably makes you breath easier too.
Sometimes we forget what we have. Let's face it, life
with pixel limitations can be pretty boring and
exceptionally blah. We are so used to streaming audio
and video. Creative is looking and feeling a whole lot
like broadcast. As advertisers, we can finally push the
edges of the creative envelope.
I'm in the Caribbean and what do you think I first saw
when I got here? None other than Burger King. It seems
like a hot commodity over here. The other thing I
noticed is that there are mobile phones everywhere. It
seems kind of funny (and refreshing) to be free of a
phone right now. It is also weird. If I need to find
directions, a phone number, a map, transportation,
entertainment, and food... anything, I either hop on my
phone or my laptop to go online. Within moments I have
multiple answers to my original question.
Well I'm out of luck in that regard.
The other thing I realized is no one has wireless
headsets. Just think about it, how many times have you
walked by a woman on the street thinking she was
talking to herself prior to seeing her headset? I'm
hooked on my Bluetooth. Short-range wireless technology
is cool now. It's been around for five years. It's had
more success in Europe then the United States, but
seems to be catching on.
Phones here are not fashionable as we see around the
streets of any major U.S. city. They are big and
clunky. If telecom companies offered slim phones with
cameras, Bluetooth, and skins, they would be hot.
I tend to miss my brands too. Thank goodness for Coke
Lite. It seems as if just about every large American
brand is a hot commodity here: McDonald's, Burger King,
and Marlboro cigarettes. I can't say I consume any of
those. Microsoft is everywhere. Good thing I know
keyboard commands because I can't read a word of
Spanish.
Many locals have Boston Red Sox hats on. Is it cool
because it is from America or do they really like the
Sox? I know what you New Yorkers will say. Well its
good to take a holiday, but great to have Bluetooth,
American brands, and Microsoft Word in English.

Cleaning, Disinfecting, and Sterilizing
A Few Basic Essentials To Keep In Mind
PART 4 of 12
Cleaning is simply washing off dirt from the surface of
an object. Disinfection is the removing of harmful
microorganisms from the surface of an object (germs).
Sterilization is the killing of all microorganisms from
the surface of an object. All of these processes have
products to go along with the required/desired
actions.
A cleaning product is usually soap and water. Water
alone would do a lot: soap alone is pretty useless.
Other ingredients added to soap, would be called
detergents. It might have some additives such as a
sheeting ingredient, (it makes the water run down
faster). There are several variations to soaps and we
call detergents soaps as well. Then to add to the
confusion we get detergents that are labeled
antibacterial soaps. This means that the product has
been given chemicals to kill bacteria. But as you have
no idea what kind of bacteria, if any, you have, this
is a poor choice. (More about that later.)
A while ago, I heard about a young mother who was often
dizzy and nauseated: had headaches and noises in her
ear. She was using this type of product in her daily
cleaning along with other strong household cleaners.
She was surprised to learn that these might be giving
her these symptoms. When asked why she used such strong
chemical, she replied that someone had told her that in
order to prevent infections in her family; she needed
to do take these precautions. Her nausea, ear noises,
headaches and dizziness disappeared a while after she
stopped using these strong products. (More about this
later.)

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------
The sun would shine all day and one could see
the snows were gently receding. Yet it seemed they
disappeared more at night than in the daytime. The
sun, whether warm or not, sent unto the snows
certain rays that caused the snow structure to
dissolve. These energies would be absorbed by the
snows during the day and at night the effect would
"grow" within the snows, leaving much less snow by
the time the ladies rose in the morning.
The sun had the same effect on the snow as it
does on plants. A plant will absorb all the sun it
can get during the day. Then in the night it takes
that energy and puts it to work in it's own growth
factories. A plant grows more at night than during
the day. Snow seems to disappear more at night
than during the day for nearly the same reason.
Subtle observations, these. Yet that is the
way it all works. Mother Nature has rules of its
own and is a remarkable self perpetuation machine.
Mae and Susan marveled at the stability and
consistency of nature. It was essentially the same
pattern and rhythms every year.
Susan rose early one day and ended up spending
nearly an hour just watching the water drip slowly
off a chunk of ice nearby. One by one the drops
would fall. They now made up a small puddle of
water and it was beginning to overflow its little
basin. It was going to run out on the low end and
move toward even more water running in a very
small little rivulet downhill. Susan knew that
each drop would join all the other drops and soon
would become a rushing torrent of water boiling
and falling headlong toward the sea many hundreds
of miles away. The process was spectacular in its
simplicity, and wonderful.
Most of the snow was gone now. Only the snow
on north facing slopes remained. The land was
dotted with bodies of water, caught in every
little dip or depression in the landscape. One,
looking out onto the landscape now would never
know this was a semi arid zone with very little
water.
It took three more days before the frost in
the ground was thawed down far enough for the
water in these ponds to soak into the land. Mae
and Susan woke up one morning and sure enough
there was not a drop of water to be seen where all
the ponds once were. The water had soaked into the
land as the frost receded.
The land was green for as far as one could
see. The grasses were absorbing as much of the
moisture as they could and the sun was not yet
high enough to scorch the land. It looked like a
paradise. They grasses were beginning to get high
enough that they looked like waves as the wind
blew over the land. Yet this land and the
temperatures were such that the grasses never did
get up much higher than the ankles.
The land also supported some small flowers
here and there. One could see patches of small
white flowers, and yellow ones. The flower itself
was not larger than a small fingernail. They were
also short lived for they would disappear as the
water became scarce and the sun became hotter.
Such was spring in this land and as with all
seasons it came with its own beauty. This was a
time for new birth, new animals, new plants and a
new revitalization of all living things.
Birds would fly over, from time to time,
announcing the message of spring. All their songs
in the spring were different than at any other
time of the year. It was a time to be happy.
Every once in a while Mae and Susan would see
someone on horseback traversing the land. They
were mostly going south to pick up much needed
supplies.
The ladies knew that by now Ng would have
found the horses, packed up his family and would
likely have found his clan. He knew where they
would be at this time of year.
Ng woke up one morning and upon stepping out
of her ger, stretched and absorbed the sunlight.
He felt good today. This was the day he was going
to set out on foot to go get horses from his tribe
so he could come back here to get his family and
pack them up for the move to the group.
As he walked around the ger he could hardly
believe his eyes. There, grazing as calmly as if
they had been there for years were four horses.
They knew they had to be there, and Ng knew they
were for him. He simply walked up to them and
petted them.
Then he ran back into the ger to tell his
family. He gave the good news and everyone wanted
to get outside to see. Ng stopped the boys and
told them to get the harness and ropes they had
worked on all winter.
Sure enough. Dad wasn't lying. There were four
horses grazing calmly behind the ger.
It was a good omen for the family. This would
be a good year. Ng and Chi Sang stopped and looked
at one another. In their hearts they knew. Their
minds went back to a cold winter night when two
ladies told them things would be fine in the
spring.

"Why not?" asked somebody from the audience.
"I watched my wife's routine at breakfast for years," the
expert explained. "She made lots of trips between the
refrigerator, stove, table and cabinets, often carrying
a single item at a time. One day I told her, Hon, why
don't you try carrying several things at once?"
"Did it save time?" the guy in the audience asked.
"Actually, yes, replied the expert. It used to take her
20 minutes to make breakfast. Now I do it in seven."
