What is the actual name of the painting known popularly
as "Whistler's Mother"?
The formal name is "Arrangement in Gray and Black: Portrait
of the Painter's Mother" by James Abbott McNeill Whistler,
1872.
What is eyeball jewelry?
It's jewelry you wear on your eyeball! Yep, apparently, there
ARE people out there willing to pay for and undergo an
expensive procedure to implant tiny pieces of jewelry in the
mucous membranes of the eye. So far, the trend seems limited
to the Netherlands, where the Netherlands Institute for Innovative
Ocular Surgery has so far implanted the tiny jewels in the eyes
of six women and one man. They have a waiting list if you're
interested!
What exactly are tennis bracelets and why are they called that?
Tennis bracelets are generally thin bracelets with diamonds.
You wouldn't normally expect diamonds to be the thing you wear
when playing a sport, but tennis star Chris Evert was known for
wearing them (they are also called diamond line bracelets) and
even lost one while playing in the 1987 U.S. Open. Thereafter,
the bracelets had a new name. Current tennis star Serena
Williams has also taken to wearing the tennis bracelet while
playing.

Preventing Burnout
We get burned when we stay too close to the heat source
for too long. Wise folks move away before they get
burned, but, some are so focused on other things that
they fail to feel the heat! When the heat finally gets
their attention, they can barely crawl away to safety.
They suffer from burnout.
Too much, too little, too late, too long. Those are
what define 'burnout'.
TOO MUCH
You do and you do and you do. You are the one who can
be counted on to stay late, come in early, skip lunch
and pick up the pieces when others let them fall. In
fact, people begin to count on you to do just that!
This is a recipe for burnout.
You've read in my other articles that you are
one-hundred percent responsible for teaching people how
to treat you. Have you taught them to treat you like
the safety plug?
Oh, and you thought that 'indispensable' was a
sure-fire strategy for promotion? Wrong. It is a
strategy for burnout.
You thought that going the extra mile was just good
exercise. It's exhausting done daily. Save it for
times when you will be appreciated, not taken for
granted.
TOO LITTLE
I was working with a coaching client recently and she
said, "I've given my life to this company and my reward
is a pink slip." Oops! Mistake. She only has one life
and she needs to keep it for herself. Work is only a
part of life and it must be kept within the confines of
values and goals.
I don't know one person who has consciously set the
goal to be the first in the company to experience
burnout. Yet, paying too little attention to
maintaining healthy balance is the equivalent. Any good
manager wants you to be living a balanced life. Why?
So that when a little extra is required, it's
available. If you're running as fast as you can every
day, you have nothing left for an occasional sprint to
a deadline.
TOO LATE
Sometimes you don't realize all that you are giving
until it's too late!
The greatest weapon you have against burnout is a
simple one. Gently pucker your lips, open your mouth
and speak that self-saving word. Whether it's
work-related, family-related or expectation-driven, you
have to learn to say 'NO!' before it is too late. You
cannot be all things to all people all the time.
Practice on small things. If a person asks you to go
somewhere that you do not want to go, thank them for
wanting to do something that includes you and
say, 'NO!". If you haven't tried this, it takes a
little practice...and no one has ever died from doing
it. Just practice. It gets easier. Remember, too, that
you never need to give a reason or an excuse. A simple
'NO, THANKS!" is all that is required....with a smile.
TOO LONG
The body and mind are resilient and forgiving....to a
point! You can push on through a whole night's work
and recover quite quickly in a day or two of rest. No
problem. Burnout occurs when pushing becomes a
lifestyle. Do more. Be more. Have more. Rescue more.
Work more. Accommodate more. Push, push, push. The
body simply cannot handle the demand and the fuses
blow.
A medical dictionary says that burnout is "An excessive
stress reaction to one's occupational or professional
environment. It is manifested by feelings of emotional
and physical exhaustion coupled with a sense of
frustration and failure." Those feelings come from the
blown fuses.
Physically, you can go into seeming meltdown. Your
adrenals are distressed. Your skin is rebelling. Your
stomach produces excess acid. Your sleep is
disturbed. Everything is stressed beyond reason and
all you want to do is crawl in a hole and pull the hole
in after you for a long, long rest.
GOOD NEWS! You can avoid all this. It's a choice.
So, if you recognize a too much, too little, too late,
too long kind of build-up in yourself. STOP! Choose
health instead.

Cleaning, Disinfecting, and Sterilizing
A Few Basic Essentials To Keep In Mind
PART 6 of 12
When we talk about disinfection of something, we
usually mean an inanimate object such as scissors or
thermometer or basin. But there are times when we use
the term in relation to a human being. We then call the
product we use then is called an antiseptic. And it
means that we are using something against the
possibility of germs causing an infection (sepsis) and
as a prevention of further problems for a few hours
after the application.
I wont go into the different household chemical
cleaners and cleansers. They are liquids or powders
that have bleach or some other active ingredient. Some
come as pure disinfects without any cleaning agents.
Others come as combinations. These should be adequate
for normal household use. If for some reason you need a
higher degree of cleanliness, your health care provider
will help you choose the right product. Dont get
caught up in the virus versus bacteria scare. Viruses
are easier to kill than bacteria. And of course the
best defence is a healthy immune system for everyone in
the family.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------
This process went on for four days without
incident or sight of anyone. But on the fifth day
the boys were gone longer on their morning ride.
It was quite some time before Ng and Chi Sang
could see them coming. They were riding hard and
made a straight line right for their parents. They
came on so fast they could hardly get their mounts
stopped as they reached Ng and Chi Sang.
"We saw them! We saw them!" The words came out
of both boys mouths at the same time.
After Ng had them off their horses and settled
down a bit he was able to learn that the clan was
about a day and a half out, by foot. They could be
reached in a couple three hours of hard ride by
horseback, but their mode of transportation at the
moment required it take a day and a half.
There was great gladness in the hearts of each
member of the family. They all felt as if they
were now attached to something once more, part of
a group within which it would be much easier to
survive.
At supper that night they had words about how
they were able to survive the winter only because
of the two ladies who helped them out. They each
vowed to say no more than the fact that these
miracle ladies brought them food and oil. They
agreed not to say that the food was never ending,
as was the oil. They agreed not to say anything
about the horses. They all knew that members of
the tribe would all be coming over to see them for
food and oil if it was known to be there all the
time. The family did not know if that was in the
plan, so decided to say nothing about it.
Of course, if it was clear someone within the
group needed help, they would share.
Sleep came hard that night. The excitement
that beat in each breast was hard to control. It
would be good to see the main group again. They
all had many friends within it. Finally, late,
sleep overcame them. Yet before long first light
was visible in the eastern sky and they were all
up as if on cue. Chi Sang had, the night before,
prepared a fast and easy breakfast. She well knew
everyone would be anxious to be started.
Sure enough, they were away a good two hours
before their usual time. The pace was also
quickened. They all wanted to get to the group
before nightfall. It would be close but they
thought they could double up the ride on the two
ponies the boys were riding. They planned to do
that by mid afternoon. The boys agreed not to go
out "scouting" this day. They would spare the
horses in preparation for the work they would have
to do late in the afternoon.
Sure enough, by noon Ng could see the smokes
from the fires of the tribe, and if he looked real
hard he could see some tents. By the time mid
afternoon arrived the gers were clearly visible
with the sun now shining on the white outer sides.
The family mounted the horses and put them
into a moderate paced slow gallop. The pack horses
were able to keep up without any problem. The
encampment was coming closer and closer. By
suppertime they were easily visible from the camp.
Riders were approaching. As was the custom in
camp, when anyone was seen to be approaching,
armed men would go investigate so that if there
was trouble it would be handled fast and easy,
away from camp.
Before the riders met with the family they
were waving and shouting their greetings. They had
recognized Ng and his family and were glad to see
them. All had been concerned about them. Soon the
riders were with them and there was much ado and
greeting. The riders took the pack horses and
let the family continue on their own mounts.
There was going to be much cheering and glee
in camp this night. There would be a community
fire and they would drink the celebration drink of
fermented mare's milk. That one of their members
had returned safely was no small thing in this
village.
Deep in their hearts each member of the family
was also glad to be back. The winter, alone, had
been an ordeal. They felt the safety of being
amongst the numbers of the village.
At the celebration fire that night Ng told
them of the ordeal, and of the two white ladies
who had come to save them from certain starvation.
That last point may not have been true. Mongols
have been known to boil the hides used as part of
their ger, and drinking the broth therefrom. That
has been said to keep a family alive for over
three months.
Ng also said that the two ladies wanted to go
through the passes to reach the land up high, and
that once he had his family settled he would be
leaving to guide them.
There were many questions as to who these two
ladies were, why were they there, what did they
do, what were they doing in this land in the
middle of winter, etc.
Ng answered as best he could without violating
the family agreement made earlier.

HA! HA! HA!
Catherine, a registered nurse, was unhappy with her
job, so she submitted her resignation. She was sure
she'd have no trouble finding a new position, because
of the nursing shortage in her area. She e-mailed
cover letters to dozens of potential employers and
attached her résumé to each one. Two weeks later,
Catherine was dismayed and bewildered that she had not
received even one request for an interview.
Finally she received a message from a prospective
employer that explained the reason she hadn't heard
from anyone else. It read: "Your résumé was not
attached as stated. I do, however, want to thank you
for the vegetable lasagna recipe."
