Who was the first president to live in the White House?
John Adams (second president) was the first president to
occupy the White House in 1800. Every US president except
for George Washington has lived and worked at 1600
Pennsylvania Avenue.
What was the first country to institute income tax?
According to the New York Public Library Book of Answers,
the first income tax was instituted in Florence, Italy, in
1451. Called the "Scala," the tax was introduced under the
reign of the Medicis. Citizens of Florence paid it for 41
years until it was overthrown in 1492. The tax was
supposedly on a progressive scale, but turned into an easy
type of political blackmail.

From the BBC News (British Broadcasting)
Apple makes Macs run Windows XP
Apple has released software that lets users run Microsoft's
operating system on its computers that use Intel chips.
Called Boot Camp the program lets Mac owners run both
Apple's OSX and Microsoft's Windows XP.
A trial version of the software is now available so users
can install it. Future versions of Apple's OSX software will
include the program.
The release follows efforts by hackers to get Windows XP
booting up on Macs that use Intel chips.
Core war
Apple said it had no plans to sell or support Windows but
added that many Mac owners have said they want to run the
operating system on their Intel-using machine.
"We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to
Windows users considering making the switch," said Philip
Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product
marketing in a statement.
Apple first announced a series of Mac machines that would
use Intel chips in June 2005 and the first computers started
shipping in January 2006.
When Boot Camp is run it takes users through a series of
steps that shows them how to split their hard drive so the
two operating systems can sit side-by-side.
It also shows how to make a boot disk to install the Windows
XP operating system.
When a machine with the two operating systems is turned on,
Boot Camp gives them the option to start either OSX or
Windows XP.
Apple said it was only releasing a trial version of Boot
Camp available for a limited amount of time. Finished
versions of Boot Camp will be available in the next version
of OSX, called Leopard, that is due to be previewed in
August.
Basic requirements for an Intel-based Mac that can run
Windows XP are: OSX version 10.4.6 or later, latest firmware
updates, 10GB of hard disk space, blank recordable CD or DVD
and a single disc edition of Windows XP Home or
Professional.
By releasing Boot Camp, Apple is hoping to cash in on the
interest generated by its iconic iPod music player. The dual
booting system could let users run Windows to play games but
use Mac applications for everything else.
The release of Boot Camp comes only weeks after two hackers
managed to get Windows XP running on an Intel-based Mac
themselves. The pair won a $13,000 (£7,405) prize for their
trouble.

Vitamins For Chronic Disease Prevention In Adults
(scientific review and clinical applications)
Two American Medical Association Journal (JAMA) Articles On
The Use Of Supplementation For Adults
PART 10 of 11
The new recommendation is part of a gradual but ongoing
attitude shift in conventional medicine concerning the value
of nutritional supplements. For many years, the prevailing
opinion among most doctors was that vitamin supplements are
unnecessary because the typical American diet provides all
of the nutrients necessary to maintain good health. However,
as the Harvard researchers point out, that opinion is no
longer defensible.
The observation that vitamin supplementation can prevent
several common chronic diseases indicates that the average
American diet does not provide optimal amounts of some
nutrients. Subtle vitamin deficiencies can result from
excessive consumption of nutrient-depleted foods such as
refined sugar and white flour, from inadequate intake of
vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables, and from nutrient losses
due to processing, prolonged heating, or storage of foods.
While vitamin supplementation can correct certain
deficiencies, it is not an adequate substitute for a good
diet. That is because whole, unprocessed foods contain a
wide array of beneficial substances besides vitamins, such
as carotenoids, flavonoids, natural antioxidants, and other
unidentified compounds. As one researcher recently
suggested, the best approach to disease prevention is to eat
properly and to take a multivitamin.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

4Now for the story
Ben Striker sat down camp fire style opposite the Old
One.
"I have the privilege of knowing you are an honorable
man. My friend has told me of you and I have seen your life.
You have spent it richly in favor of your people in this
village. Now your time has come and you are to be rewarded.
I am glad that my friend has asked me to speak with you."
"Why have you been sent?"
"It has come to us you are concerned about your future.
Mr. Sam and Riata have prepared you, energized you and
filled you with love. You are now ready. It is my honor to
confirm that. Further, if you so wish I am permitted to let
you know what will happen, hoping that will set aside any
lingering fears you may have."
"I thank you for that but it is given to no man to know
the time or place."
"That is true when one lives in man's world. When you
live by higher law it is given unto you to control the time
and place and indeed overcome death. It was promised long
ago and when one lives by his Maker's rules one can overcome
death. In your case you have lived a selfless life in
service of your fellow man. As part of all honor that will
come to you it is permitted for you to know."
"Mr. Ben, I thank you for that. I prefer not to know,
instead living my life as I always have, being flexible and
taking what comes when it comes. I, long ago, learned that
death is not to be feared but cherished. I am ready and when
my time arrives I shall go in peace and confidence."
"Old One, the world would be much better off if men
thought as you think. I shall respect your wishes and no
longer burden you with such knowledge. I am happy to be here
and to have met you before your time. I shall see you after
as well and we will once more sit and sip. Your village
seems to have taken to the knowledge Billy has offered.
Billy and Sonora are much respected among us. They are young
and have long done good work aiding mankind. It is good they
teach the village for the village is ready for all that
happens tomorrow. I am glad it is you who will conduct the
ceremony. I look forward to it."
"Our ceremony is not much. The young lovers have already
committed to each other, in their hearts, long ago. This
ceremony is really to tell everybody else that we recognize
their union and will respect it."
"Ahhh! Such is the nature of weddings. Wherever you find
them they accomplish that objective and more. It lends
significance in the minds of the participants as well."
"Yes, but in Billy and Sonora's case they well know that
significance. I shall contribute nothing. They have
refrained from sexual activities before marriage. That is in
honor of each other. They now have the power to live the
rest of their lives together as strong individuals. This
they have committed to each other and to themselves. My role
is not to impose restriction upon them but upon all who see
them. This ceremony shall set them free and deservedly so.
They have been an excellent example to our young who may
well learn from these two. It is my privilege to be asked to
conduct the ceremony."
"That is your job anyway, isn't it?"
"Yes, Mr. Ben. However, Mr. Billy and Miss Sonora took
the time to come and ask me and honored me with their
request. I leave this village in good hands with these two
living here. The people of this village will thrive and do
well in my absence. This confidence I have."
"Old One, you are a deep thinking man and, it would
appear, have long ago lost your ego. That is how you can
serve your fellow man, having no thought of return. That is
why I am sent to honor you."
"You came for the wedding did you not?"
"Yes, Old One. Yet all this is known to us. And the
wedding was caused to happen at just the right time.
Circumstances are unfolding as they should."
"Mr. Ben I am pleased to know you. Even though I have
never met you I know you clean through. You are an honorable
friend of Mr. Sam and as knowledgeable as he. It is well you
are here. I trust you will enjoy."
"Thank you Old One. If i may, I will take my leave. I
will see you later at the community fire and for sure
tomorrow. Thank you for sipping with me."
Ben rose and calmly walked away.
The Old One closed his eyes and saw a picture of Billy.
He sent Billy some thoughts. "My beloved friend. It is your
turn to visit."
Billy was playing with some of the kids, on the hill. He
stopped, then smiled. He sent thoughts unto the Old One. "I
will be right there."
The Old One smiled as he sat there observing the
activity in the village.
Soon he could see Billy running toward him from across
the common.
"You need not rush, my friend. Come, let's go for a
walk."
The pair of them walked out into the cattle pastures,
amongst the animals. There were few herdsmen so they were
really alone. They walked slowly, looking, smelling,
breathing. The Old One had a staff with which he walked and
Billy walked along with his hands in his pockets.
"Your friends have all come to see me, Billy. They have
assured me I am in for a reward. They say I have lived a
good life of giving to my fellow man with no thought of
return. Here, Billy, one cannot really amass riches. Our
richness is in life itself. Many do not know that but I was
privileged to learn this on my becoming a man journey, long
ago. When you first came to our village and asked permission
to build a hut here and live among us, I knew then you were
the one to lead our people. I knew then my time was at hand.
I am glad you came, Billy. You have served our village well
and I know I leave the villagers in good hands. Thank you
for showing an Old One the respect you did and thank you for
sending your friends."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Idiot. Has the word "idiot" always meant a mentally
deficient person?
No. The word is Greek and at first an "idiot" was just a
private citizen who held no public office. However, since
the Greeks considered it a great honor to hold office, the
word finally came to mean a person who couldn't take part in
public affairs.

HA! HA! HA!
Start with a cage containing five monkeys.
Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set
of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the
stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he
touches the stairs, spray all of the monkeys with cold
water.
After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same
result - all the monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty
soon, when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the
other monkeys will try to prevent it.
Now, turn off the cold water. Remove one monkey from the
cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the
banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and
horror, all of the other monkeys attack him. After another
attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the
stairs, he will be assaulted.
Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and
replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs
and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the
punishment with enthusiasm.
Again, replace a third original monkey with a new one. The
new one makes it to the stairs and is attacked as well.
Two of the four monkeys that beat him have no idea why they
were not permitted to climb the stairs, or why they are
participating in the beating of the newest monkey.
After replacing the fourth and fifth original monkeys, all
the monkeys that have been sprayed with cold water have been
replaced.
Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs.
Why not?
Because as far as they know that's the way it's always been
around here.
And that's how company policy begins..........
