TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What family, prominent in Italy in the 1400s and 1500s, was
known for murder and incest, as well as producing several
popes and cardinals and even a saint?
The Borgias, descendants of a noble line originally from
Spain, became prominent in the politics and religious
affairs of Italy. The house of the Borgias produced two
popes, numerous other church leaders, and a saint. But it
was also known for its treachery and cruelty. In order to
maintain power, the Borgia popes and their descendants
poisoned and murdered those who got in their way. One of the
most famous Borgias, Lucrezia, has come to be a symbol of
feminine evil. Allegedly, she was skilled at poisoning and
involved in the murders of a husband and others. She is also
accused of carrying on incestuous relations with her father
(a pope) and brother. While there is support for the latter
allegations, there isn't much evidence to support the
former. It seems more likely that her ruthless brother
Cesare was the one who killed off her husband and the other
victims, and not at her request, either!
What famous work about politics is based in part on the
Borgias?
Machiavelli's "The Prince" is a guide for political leaders
which suggests that any means, however unscrupulous, should
be employed to achieve political power. The book is based in
part on Cesare and his father Alexander. Cesare is singled
out as the prime example of the ruthlessness required of
rulers. "Machiavellian" has come to mean "marked by cunning,
duplicity, or bad faith."

Tips And Tidbits
VMware plans Mac version of virtualization software
"If you think running Windows XP on an Apple Macintosh
sounds like hot stuff, wait until something called
virtualization takes off. Then you'll be able to run
Windows, the Mac operating system and Linux at the same
time, toggling between them as easily as you now click
between applications running in different windows," Kevin
Maney reports for USA Today. "And that's not long in coming.
Virtualization is already running on at least 4 million PCs,
says Diane Greene, who runs the leading virtualization
software company, VMware. The company's products won't run
on Macs yet, and they're not ready for the mass market.
VMware is used, for instance, by people who run Linux on
Windows machines."
"But virtualization is a fast-growing business for VMware
and its parent, EMC. 'We'd like to let anybody run any
operating system (OS) on any machine,' Greene says. 'You'll
be able to buy any application you want and not worry what
OS it runs on.' Apple's Boot Camp only takes that so far. It
makes it easier to run Windows XP on a Mac, but you'd have
to restart your computer to get from one to the other. There
is software on the Web that can make a Mac run another OS,
but it's difficult to use. Virtualization software tricks
the computer into thinking each OS is the only one on the
machine - so multiple operating systems can run
simultaneously but not get in each others' way. VMware has
plans to roll out virtualization for consumers over coming
years. 'We can run it on the Mac OS in our labs already,'
Greene says," Maney reports.

Vitamins For Chronic Disease Prevention In Adults
(scientific review and clinical applications)
Two American Medical Association Journal (JAMA) Articles On
The Use Of Supplementation For Adults
PART 11 of 11
The authors of the new report point out that most
multivitamins contain iron; supplementation with this
mineral may be inadvisable for many men, non-menstruating
women, and a small proportion of the population with an
inherited intolerance to iron (hemochromatosis). Therefore,
individuals who are taking a multivitamin should discuss
with their doctor whether it is appropriate to include iron
in their supplement.
The publication of this new report is an encouraging sign
that conventional medicine is finally taking a more serious
look at the role played by nutrition in the prevention and
treatment of illness. Dr Laz Bannock, has been teaching
undergraduate and graduate level students in clinical
nutrition for the past 5 years. He is currently Professor of
Applied Clinical Nutrition with the IICN in London, England.
Please remember there that I am asking you to think: NOT to
jump to any conclusions right now. Just be open to learning
more and asking more questions or different questions. I
sound like a broken record, but this is YOUR body: no one
elses. And if the AMA published an article that suggests
you could prevent degenerative conditions such as cancer,
heart disease, and osteoporosis, would it not be an idea to
think that the quality of your life could possibly be
better?
Keep these questions and thoughts in mind as you print off
the abstracts.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

4Now for the story
"Old One, I did not send my friends. You requested a
meeting with Mr. Sam, did you not?"
"Yes, young man, but it is you who have brought all
these powerful guests and it is you who has given cause for
us to have a ceremony tomorrow. In my lifetime, Billy, I
have seen many things. At no time have I witnessed such love
as you have for these people. They know that, Billy. they
know you want nothing from them and they know you teach them
right. That is why they are attentive. There is not one in
this village who is against you, Billy. Each day they speak
in favor of you. They respect the way you choose not to be
their leader. They know you are only a council and they will
ask many times, Billy. Yet they know they shall be self
governing. For this they love you. They now understand
Sonora and her family. They love them too, deeply. Tomorrow,
Billy, I shall wed you and Sonora. From then it will be my
time. I know not the how or when but my work is over and I
shall pass on. I leave this village in your hands, Billy.
Love them and guide them."
"Old One, it would be my privilege to do so and I shall
give all I have to that end. Yet, I am suspicious I shall
not be needed. Your village is much further along than you
think."
"Yes, I know you are of that belief. For the sake of an
Old One though I must have your promise."
"You have it, Old One. On the matter of you leaving, I
want you to know that saddens me. I will see you later, of
course, but your daily presence here has been helpful to
your village and I enjoyed our talks."
"Change must occur, Billy, and that means people like me
have to move out of the way. That is fine with me, Billy.
Thank you for your comments, yet we both know this is
necessary for the village to proceed to higher law."
"Do you have any leader picked out whom you feel should
be the village head man?"
"None other than who we already have. The people will
choose their leaders as they see fit. It is right to be done
that way."
"True, and of you, may I be of assistance in any way?"
"You have already, Billy. These many months I have
watched you with the people. You have made the heart of an
Old One happy. I am glad you came and I know I leave the
village in good hands."
"And tomorrow, Old One? Is there anything I can do
there?"
"Your job is to show up, Billy. I am sure you will do
that. Have you decided where you will spend your alone time
together?"
"Old One, my sister and her husband have offered us a
hut in South America, on the Amazon river, where they spent
their alone time. We thought we would spend some time there.
Then we thought we would visit everyone who attended our
wedding. Some of the joy and togetherness we will miss
because we will be gone away. We would like to share that
with each guest and that means we will have to visit them."
"That would be nice. May I ask that you visit me also?"
"By all means, Old One. I would love to sit in council
with you again."
"I would like that, Billy."
"Consider it done. Look at that sunset. Isn't it
beautiful?"
Billy was always enamored with the sunsets in this
country. The days were hot and usually all the activity of
man and beast raised dust into the air. When the setting sun
was on the horizon the whole sky was red as the sun shone
through the dust. Billy had never seen skies like this
anywhere. They were beautiful.
"It is time we return, Billy. Tomorrow is a big day and
we must attend the fire tonight. It will be a big one."
"I know. The men have been working all day gathering
wood. The village seems to have settled in with our guests
really well. It is not so much of a shock to our village as
I thought it was going to be."
"That is because of the wisdom with which your guests
integrated into the village, Billy. They did not overwhelm
the people, but came into the village one at a time. They
also engaged people right away. They had the whole village
so busy talking that none of the villagers noticed, until it
was already done. Your guests are not only welcome, Billy,
they are now part of this village. That is good."
The pair of them had long walked out of the herds of
cattle and were standing on a high plain admiring the
stillness of the day as the transformation was taking place
from day into night. They began their walk back, in silence.
They moved slow and calmly, enjoying the presence of one
another. They came to and walked through the herds again and
were once more in front of the Old One's hut.
"Thank you, Billy. I am honored by your presence. I
will see you later."
With that the Old One disappeared into his hut, not
wanting to show Billy the tears in his eyes.
Billy knew. But he also knew this was a cherished moment
for the Old One, so he left, silently.
The village fire was already lit as Billy made his way
to find Sonora.
"I wondered when you would return. How is the Old One?"
"He is fine, honey. He is ready, yet he is quietly
looking at and appreciating the village and the people."
"Our guests have been inquiring after you. I told them
you were with the Old One. Mr. Sam and Mr. Ben had already
advised them about the Old One. All is well."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Jack Robinson: What is the origin of the expression "before
you can say Jack Robinson"?
There are several explanations of this phrase; but the best
story is of a very volatile gentleman-about-town named Jack
Robinson. Robinson used to go calling on his friends and
would then change his mind and leave before his name could
be announced.

HA! HA! HA!
A man walks into a restaurant with a full-grown ostrich
behind him.
The waitress asks them for their orders. The man says, "A
hamburger, fries and a coke," and turns to the ostrich,
"What's yours?"
"I'll have the same," says the ostrich. A short time later
the waitress returns with the order. "That will be $9.40
please," and the man reaches into his pocket and pulls out
the exact change for payment. The next day, the man and the
ostrich come again and the man says, "A hamburger, fries,
and a coke."
The ostrich says, "I'll have the same." Again the man
reaches into his pocket and pays with exact change.
This becomes routine until, the two enter again. "The
usual?" asks the waitress.
"No, this is Friday night, so I will have a steak, baked
potato, and salad," says the man.
"Same," says the ostrich.
Shortly the waitress brings the order and says, "That will
be $32.62."
Once again the man pulls the exact change out of his pocket
and places it on the table.
The waitress cannot hold back her curiosity any longer.
"Excuse me, sir. How do you manage to always come up with
the exact change out of your pocket every time?"
"Well," says the man, "several years ago I was cleaning the
attic and found an old lamp. When I rubbed it, a Genie
appeared and offered me two wishes. My first wish was that
if I ever had to pay for anything, I would just put my hand
in my pocket and the right amount of money would always be
there."
That's brilliant!" says the waitress. "Most people would
wish for a million dollars or something, but you'll always
be as rich as you want for as long as you live!"
"That's right. Whether it's a gallon of milk or a Rolls
Royce, the exact money is always there," says the man.
The waitress asks, "But, sir, what's with the ostrich?"
The man sighs, pauses, and answers, "My second wish was for
a tall chick with a big ass and long legs who agrees with
everything I say."
