TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

When do fingerprints develop?
What is a supervolcano?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
How do people leave fingerprints behind at a crime scene?
First, it helps to know that fingerprints aren't actually
formed in the skin, but are caused by ridges in the flesh
beneath the skin. So imagine your fingers are like an ink
stamp, with your fingerprint as the pattern on the stamp.
Now for the "ink": skin pores on your fingers produce oils
and sweat. When you touch something, you leave those oils on
the surface, in the shape of your fingerprints. Detectives
can pick up those oily compounds with fingerprint powders,
just like in the detective movies. Modern fingerprint
powders are usually applied using special soft fiberglass
brushes, which do less damage to the prints. Detectives
today can use special chemicals to pick up fingerprints on
nearly everything, even wet paper. There are also special
lasers that cause chemicals in some fingerprints to glow so
they can be photographed.
Can fingerprints be obtained off a human body?
Yes, thanks to the development of the above-mentioned laser.
Obtaining fingerprints off human bodies was nearly
impossible only a few years ago.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW . . . with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler

Release Useless Remnants Of Your Past
Are you hanging on to anything in life that really would be
best left behind? Holding onto things from the past, that
no longer serve you in any positive way? How do you know?
Here are a few insights that can help you have a
"baggage-free" life.
DID IT SLIP UNDER THE RADAR?
Sometimes, we can be with folks we believe love us. We
consider these folks trustworthy and safe and we allow
ourselves to relax when we're with them. Our history with
them is such that we can be vulnerable, comfortable and
carefree.
Sometimes, though, in a moment of misplaced frankness or
thoughtless teasing, a remark is made that slips under our
radar. We were sure we were safe and the zinger takes us
completely off guard. Not only that, it makes its way
directly to our heart...and our subconscious.
Many years later, we may still be repeating those
thoughtless words to ourselves as true when, indeed, the
person who uttered the words has forgotten about them
completely.
Research shows that many an anorexic became so after an
off-hand remark about chubbiness slipped under the radar
when delivered by a loved family member or close friend.
There were no defences against it and it cut to the quick.
If you are hanging onto something someone once said and
repeating it to yourself as gospel, examine this. It was
likely untrue at the time and even more untrue now. Release
yourself from it. Get it out of your self-talk.
Remember, you choose your self-talk. Choose wisely. Accept
no substitutes for uplifting, positive, forward-moving
thoughts.
DID IT COME FROM SOMEONE SPECIAL?
Do you have things in your house that you don't particularly
like but someone you love gave it to you or left it to you?
Unless you have warm, loving thoughts every time you look at
it, release it. Let it go. You are not doing the friend or
relative a disservice. You are doing yourself one.
Surround yourself with things that you find functional,
beautiful or memorable in the best way possible.
Gifts are tokens of caring. It is the desire to give that
is the important thing, not the object. Gifts given with
strings attached are not gifts. They are alternative ways of
exerting control. Give them back or give them away. That's
the way to get out from under that weight.
Ever receive a gift that felt more like an obligation? I
remember my mother giving me a watch and asking me where it
was each time I was not wearing it. I eventually offered to
give it back to her so that she would not have to wonder
where it was. Gifts with tentacles surrounding them are not
gifts. Release them.
DID SOMEONE TELL YOU IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO?
Have you examined your beliefs, values and goals lately?
Are they truly yours or are they left-overs someone gave
you? Recently I was giving a seminar and I asked the
participants to quickly write down their beliefs. After two
or three, some were unsure what else to write. Our beliefs
are ingrained and we often operate from them almost
unconsciously.
Perhaps you may have written, 'I believe each person is
trustworthy until they prove otherwise.' Another may have
written, "I believe I can trust no one until they prove
themselves trustworthy." Where do you sit? What is right
for you?
One day I was sorting photographs after my mother's death.
As I reflected on the relationship she and I shared, I
thought about approval. For my mom's generation, or, at
least for my mom, giving approval was tantamount to giving
up control. She had an underlying belief that, if she ever
told me I was good enough, I would give up trying, striving
and growing. Does that ring a bell for you?
What I learned that day sorting the photographs was that,
although I loved my Mom, there were many things about her
beliefs and behaviours that I did not approve of. Are you
waiting for the approval of someone of whom you do not
approve? That is a self-defeating, endless wait. Give it
up!
Live by your own rules, your own beliefs, your own values.
That is what makes you unique in this world AND able to give
your unique gift to the world.
If you are living from inherited agendas or the unwritten
rules that were slipped to you, get over it! Step up, step
out and step in to your own carefully examined beliefs and
behaviours. As Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see
in the world." You can do it! Start now.

Blood, Its Circulation And Its Pressure
PART 2 of 10
When you are at the scene of an accident, what is one of the
first things that paramedics do? They take a "blood pressure".
That's an indication of its importance. Lastly I would like to
tell you why donating blood is a good thing for most people: why
you might want to share it with someone who is struggling to
stay alive.
Let's start with blood and what it is... As you will see
shortly, blood has a crucial and very specific purpose. If
something is abnormal, the fulfillment of its purpose is
interrupted or changed. Your blood's mission is to keep you
alive and well. Its purpose is to provide you with nutrients,
oxygen, and chemicals, and to remove waste products. Blood is a
liquid made up of several parts including red blood cells
(erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets
(thrombocytes). It carries these nutrients, chemicals and
oxygen.
"Hemoglobin" is the red pigment in red blood cells. It
transports oxygen. It is the most important part of the blood.
Red blood cells are known as "Erythrocytes" in medical
terminology. Their purpose is to carry oxygen and a small amount
of carbon dioxide. Blood that carries oxygen is called
oxygenated blood. Without oxygen, your body cannot live. White
blood cells are known as leukocytes. And there are several types
including granulocytes, lymphocytes, and monocytes. Leukocytes
are meant to fight infections. They are part of the inflammatory
process, which is part of your body's immune system. Leukocytes
are responsible for the elimination of bacteria, fungi, and
viruses. Platelets (thrombocytes) are part of a cell and are
responsible for blood clotting.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

4Now for the story
Tom and Tlang thought they had a surprise for Tom's Mom
and Dad when they told them about the idea of a double
wedding in China, along with Amenti and Reno.
However, that was nothing compared to the surprise Sam
and Alewka and Reno had cooked up.
Sam and Ben had been to see the Old One this morning and
the scene was set.
Half the plan had already been hatched by Billy and
Sonora themselves. They wanted Tom and Tlang, Amenti and
Reno to stand up with them. They were to be the bride's
maids and the groom's men. As a result the village had made
clothes for these two couples just the same as the clothes
they had made for the bride and groom. All Sam and Ben had
to do was arrange for a slight change in the steps in the
ceremony.
The time was here. The village had cleared away all the
ashes and cinders from the fire circle, leaving a clean,
packed area in it's place. They had stacked wood up as high
as a man's chest and for a width of maybe 20 feet. Standing
at the center of the structure, on the ground, was the Old
One. He was standing out and away from the wall about 15
feet. The wall had a slight curve to it, like a semi circle.
From it was draped green grasses and leaves, from the top
nearly to the ground. Interspersed throughout the leaves and
grasses were hundreds of flowers. The air surrounding the
wall smelled as if one was in Hawaii.
The villagers, early in the morning, had laid out
stones to form an aisle up to the Old One. Onlookers and
guests stayed on both sides of the aisle, behind the rocks.
The aisle was 50 feet long and 20 feet wide.
The idea was that Billy and Sonora, with Billy's folks
on his side and Sonora's folks on her side, would walk six
abreast up the aisle to the Old One. There the parents would
leave the couple and retire to their respective sides at the
front. The bride's maids and the groom's men were to follow,
the two ladies first followed by the two men. The plan was
simple and all was well.
The aisle itself was strewn with flowers, so much so
that people had to walk on them. In doing so there was the
odor and smell of the floral perfume that permeated the air
all around.
This day, too, played a part in the ceremony. It was a
clear, warm day. Those living by higher law had to tone down
the temperature a little for this ceremony. No one could
spend a long time out in this heat. They also shielded the
people from the burning effect of the sun. The result was
this was wholly comfortable for all.
Billy and Sonora sensed something was up. Billy went to
Sam and inquired. Sam leaned forward and whispered in
Billy's ear. Immediately Billy had a smile on his face that
wouldn't quit. He was thrilled right to the core with what
Sam had told him. He rushed over to find Sonora and told
her. She, too, suddenly had a smile on her face. The pair of
them emanated a gladness, an electricity that drew in all.
They made everyone in the village happy.
The time had arrived. It was near two in the afternoon.
Billy was made to go to his hut and dress. The village had
prepared a white robe for each of Billy, Tom and Amenti.
When the three of them appeared outside the hut they all
looked alike.
Similarly the clothing for the ladies was the same,
simple, waistless, white robes to the ground. The simplicity
was meant to give meaning to the ceremony and not to
clothing.
"Don't you guys get any ideas now! We all look alike so
don't go thinking you can fool Sonora."
They all laughed at the idea.
The villagers and guests were all standing in the areas
separated off for them.
Billy, his folks, Sonora and her folks were at the
beginning of the aisle.
For some reason people couldn't figure out Maz and
Eloise were there, too, as was Riata, plus Mae Wiley and
Susan Miles. They fussed around, pretending to straighten
out the clothing of the wedding party.
The Old One looked to his left and to his right and
nodded. Two drums on each side of him about 15 feet away
from him, began to beat. Slowly the cadence built in volume,
but not in tempo.
The Old One nodded to Sam and Mombudo. The two men
tugged lightly on the arms of Billy and Alewka on the one
side and Sonora and Kenyata on the other. Slowly the wedding
party made its way down the aisle toward the Old One.
The two bride's maids were going to follow, but Riata
and Mae stepped in and, holding their fingers up to their
mouths, signaling silence, held the ladies back. Silently
Riata slid over to Reno's side. Maz brought Amenti up beside
her. Amenti was going to move back. Maz would not let him.
Still the signal was for silence. They did not move.
The kid's hearts were racing. Something was up and they
only hoped their ideas were right. Could it be?
Maz moved back and caused Tom to stand with him behind
Amenti. Maz had a good grip on Tom's arm.
As if by plan, and it was, Mae and Susan brought Tlang
up beside Tom. Tom's and Tlang's hearts were beating so hard
it could be felt by those around them. Each looked the other
in the eye. The question was there. Could it be?

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Lackadaisical: Why do we say a lazy, dawdling person is
"lackadaisical"?
It's a bit of keen phychological observation. The term comes
from the exclamation, "lackaday," which means "shame on you,
day" - just as though the "day" were a person. And since
most persons who cry "lackaday" and blame the quick passage
of time are looking for an excuse for their own lack of
energy, they are lackadaisical".

HA! HA! HA!
A man was sitting alone in his office one night when a genie popped
up out of his ashtray. "And what will your third wish be?"
The man looked at the genie and said, "Huh? How can I be getting a
third wish when I haven't had a first or second wish yet?"
"You have had two wishes already," the genie said, "but your second
wish was for me to put everything back the way it was before you
made your first wish. Thus, you remember nothing, because everything
is the way it was before you made any wishes. You now have one wish
left."
"Okay," said the man, "I don't believe this, but I've always wanted
to understand women. I'd love to know what's going on inside their
heads."
"Funny," said the genie as it granted his wish and disappeared
forever, "That was your first wish, too!"
