TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

When was the last time a supervolcano erupted?
Where is there a supervolcano in the US?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
When do fingerprints develop?
Fingerprints develop early in gestation, both for humans and
for other primates. The fetus acquires these unique
identifiers in the first trimester. Genetics does play a
role in the formation of fingerprints, but even identical
twins (who share identical DNA) have different fingerprints.
What is a supervolcano?
As if you didn't already have enough to worry about, now
there's supervolcanoes. Basically, if one of these babies
erupts, things will be bad. The explosion would be heard
around the world. The sky would darken. Black rain would
fall. The earth would plunge into the equivalent of a
nuclear winter. At least that's the story according to a BBC
program on supervolcanoes that aired in 2000. A normal
volcano is formed by a column of molten rock (magma) rising
from deep within the earth, erupting on the surface, and
hardening in layers down the sides (forming the familiar
cone shape-shaped mountain we think of when we think
"volcano"). Supervolcanoes begin life when magma rises from
the mantle to create a boiling reservoir in the Earth's
crust. The chamber increases to a huge size, building up
intense pressure until it erupts.

Here's To Think On . . . with Ken Darby
-----------------
What Can I Get For A Rib?
In the Garden of Eden, Adam makes it known to the God
that he's lonely. "I have decided to give you a
companion," God says. "She will be beautiful,
intelligent, and witty. And she will obey your every
command, do anything to make you happy."
"Great!" says Adam. "What do I have to do in return?"
"Well, it will cost you and arm and a leg," God says.
"That's pretty steep," says Adam, "What can I get for a
rib?"
How typical of man. Shortsightedness is, unfortunately
a far too highly prevalent condition.
If man would only come to understand that taking the
easy way, or the cheap way is the way to certain
frustration and stress, he might reconsider a lot of
his decisions.
The internet is completely inundated with "free" stuff.
If you look at some of the headlines and some of the
promises it is for sure you will make a million dollars
with this "free" item. Moreover, if you look long
enough you will find one or more that offer to do it
for you.
Now, think of that. Who wouldn't want that? Join free,
do no work, I'll do it for you and you will end up a
millionaire. Pretty good, wouldn't you say?
It is just this propensity of man to be shortsighted
that allows this kind of ad to bilk money from the slow
witted consumers.
Do not misunderstand me. I have no problem with that.
Anyone who gets involved with that has to go through
lessons of which that might well be one. This is not a
criticism of those who would milk the gullible. It is a
writing to have us all understand where the gullibility
comes from, for we all have some of it in us.
The point is not to be angry at those who would "take
us". The point is to learn, down deep, who we are and
how to handle it. This shortsightedness, according to
the joke, is apparently as old as man himself. I
believe it.
It has been my good pleasure to witness many who "shop
for bargains". While this may have a time and a place,
we have no problem with that.
What is costly, though, is the idea that you purchase a
ten year old car to do the job of one which keeps you
on the road, trouble free. The logic says that sooner
or later that ten year old car will fail you, and that
likely at a critical time. Now, don't go rush out and
buy a new car. Simply think about the idea that when
you can accomplish far more, and do things much better
when you do not have to stop to repair things, then
wisdom would dictate that you buy the car that will
give you that advantage, regardless of the price. You
will gain far more with peace of mind, reliable
productivity, purposeful direction and wisdom than you
will by taking a shortcut, being lazy, or trying to
"save".
It is your life, of course, and so, the choices are
yours. So the next time you must make a decision that
will hopefully be of considerable benefit to you,
remember the potential pitfalls that come with the
attitude of ...

Blood, Its Circulation And Its Pressure
PART 3 of 10
Red blood cells that are filled with oxygen are known
"collectively" as "oxygenated blood". It is bright red.
De-oxygenated" blood (oxygen removed) will look darker compared
to oxygenated blood. When it shows up in the skin, it is called
cyanosis. In a trauma, it is fairly easy to see if an artery or
vein is cut by the colour of the blood and the pressure with
which it shows up. An artery will spurt bright red blood, while
a vein produces dark slower moving blood. Serum or plasma is
what is left after the "solids" are removed.
Nutrients include all that is necessary for the cell to function
efficiently. They come from foods you eat, and are digested and
metabolized (changed) into a usable form. The chemicals also
come from foods (including water) and are also critical to your
well being. They provide the critical balance your body needs.
Altogether, nutrients, oxygen, and chemicals are taken to the
cells, and waste products are removed. Each blood component has
a vital function. When these functions can't be fulfilled, an
imbalance can occur. And the body craves balance.
If you recall previous articles, the body has nine systems such
as the digestive system, the reproductive system, the endocrine
system, and six more. Each one is different and has a distinct
purpose. But all are made up of individual cells. And these
cells perform different functions depending on the system's
responsibility. However they all essentially require the same
nutrients, chemicals, and oxygen. What YOU won't know is what
the cells needs, but your body does. And it knows what it
requires will keep it balanced and complete. So you don't need
to eat to fill your kidneys' requirements, or your nervous
system's needs. Eat a meal that is balanced (and that is a
difficult concept to get across to people in this day of diets!)

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

4Now for the story
When Billy and Sonora reached the spot picked for them,
in front of the Old One, the drums stopped. Sam and Alewka
each shook Billy by the hand and gave him a hug. When that
was done they turned and walked away from him, along a path
in front of the villagers and guests.
Mombudo and Kenyata did the same concerning Sonora, then
turned and walked away from her in the direction opposite to
what Sam and Alewka had taken.
Then Sam left Alewka and rushed quickly to the back.
The tension amongst the people at the back, waiting to
go up the aisle, was so thick you could feel it. Sam walked
around them and stood in front, facing them. He had a
twinkle in his eye.
As he looked at Reno, she was crying. It was as if she
knew but was afraid to ask, in case she was wrong. She was
sobbing.
Amenti had tears pouring out of his eyes, without
sobbing.
Sam moved and looked at his son. Tom was so overjoyed it
poured out of his eyes. Tlang was sobbing and shaking with
involuntary movements.
Mae and Susan were so happy they could no longer hold it
in, the tears were flowing. Riata emanated a white light
that was nearly blinding and crying out loud.
Maz and Eloise, too, were both crying.
Sam couldn't take it any more. The emotion built up in
him to a point where he, too, had a lump in his throat so
big you would have thought it was his heart.
"Wou . . . would yo . . .Ahem!" Sam cleared his throat
and took some time to settle. "Would you two couples like to
get married today?"
That did it. It pulled the cork out of the bottle. Tlang
and Reno burst out crying.
Reno and Amenti ran to Sam and hugged him. Reno
whispered into Sam's ear. "Yes, Mr. Sam."
Sam looked beyond them to Tlang and Tom. They were
hugging each other. Tom looked at his Dad. All he could do
was gently nod his head. Sam smiled. He was so much in love
it broadcast to everyone present.
The onlookers, villagers and guests, could only watch.
Even then it was hard seeing for there was not a dry eye
anywhere. All were crying, even the Old One.
Sam turned to face the villagers, guests and the Old
One. "Ladi . . . ladies and gent . . . Ahem! Excuse me.
Ladies and gentlemen . . . " He waited until his trembling
settled. "Ladies and gentlemen. Today we shall have a triple
wedding." There, it was out.
The crowd cheered, cried, whimpered, murmured and was
generally so emotional it was unbelievable. They had come
for a wedding of a couple they loved and now three couples,
all deeply loved, were going to wed.
The Old One, standing in front of Billy and Sonora
watched both of them weeping. He looked at the onlookers,
all crying. He looked at Sam, Riata, Mae and Susan, Maz and
Eloise. All were tearful.
He, too, wept. In all his life he had never risen to
such a high level of intensity of emotion as he was part of
this day. This day he would never forget, neither would
anyone there. He cried.
As he did he also looked left and right and nodded his
head. The drums began their slow cadence.
Sam turned and walked back to Amenti and took his arm.
He and Riata looked at each other, tears in their eyes, and
took one step. Reno couldn't stand it anymore. She burst out
loud in tears. Here she was being escorted down the aisle
and she was so filled with joy she could no longer contain
it.
Slowly, at first. One foot in front of the other. She
and Amenti didn't even know how they did it. Sam and Riata
were pulling, while holding them up. Somehow their feet just
ended up being where they had to be.
Time and circumstance was just a complete blur. Their
hearts, minds and bodies were so filled with love and joy
they could not even think straight.
One foot, then the other. As they passed, the villagers
held out their arms and hands hoping to touch the couple in
an attempt to grasp some of their joy.
It seemed like it took an hour to get from the rear of
the aisle to standing beside Billy and Sonora. At the same
time they had never done anything so fast in their lives.
Sam gave Amenti a hug. Riata gave Reno a crying hug. Sam
and Riata left the couple beside Billy and Sonora and
retired to each side.
As Sam came up to Alewka her face was wet with tears.
She said nothing but raised her hand to point to Billy and
Sonora, then to the Old One. Even their clothing showed
signs of getting wet from the tears.
Billy and Sonora wanted to marry but had no idea this
was going to happen. They could not have been happier.
The Old One looked at Sam, but couldn't see him very
well.
The drums continued. Now Tlang and Tom were being
escorted up the aisle. Maz and Eloise were on Tom's side and
Mae and Susan were escorting Tlang. Both the kids needed
support. They had not expected this. Their hearts and minds
were beyond any level of emotion they had experienced up to
now. They, too, took forever to get to the front in a
minute.
Finally they arrived, hugged their escorts, and were
alone with Billy and Sonora, and Amenti and Reno.
All stood in front of the Old One.
He raised his hands.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Macaroni: Why did Yankee Doodle call himself "macaroni"?
Because that was the then current name for a "fop" or a
"dandy". It was the name for a dandy because a group of
well-travelled young Englishmen of wealth and position
formed a club called the "Macaroni Club" in London around
1760. They named the club that because they were fond of
foreign cooking. these young men also dressed in foreign
manner; the common people misunderstood the use of the word
"macaroni" and took the name of their club to be descriptive
of their dress.

HA! HA! HA!
A young executive was leaving the office at 6pm when he found
the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) standing in front of a
shredder with a piece of paper in hand.
"Listen," said the CEO, "this is important, and my secretary
has left. Can you make this thing work?"
"Certainly," said the young executive. He turned the machine
on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button.
"Excellent, excellent!" said the CEO as his paper disappeared
inside the machine. "I just need one copy."
