TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

When was the phrase "under God" added to the Pledge of
Allegiance?

What word did Bellamy leave out of the Pledge for political
reasons?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What steps are being taken to protect Earth from a possible
hit by a comet?

NASA is working on it. The US space agency has established
the Near-Earth Object Survey Committee to develop a plan to
catalog all comets and asteroids that may threaten Earth. In
coordination with the Department of Defense and the space
agencies of other nations, the goal is to identify and
catalog the orbital characteristics of all comets and
asteroids greater than one kilometer (about a half-mile) in
diameter in orbit around the sun that cross the orbit of our
fine planet. So we can at least know when they're coming!
Will we be able to shoot them out of the sky and protect our
planet? There are some ideas on the table, including surface
nuclear explosions and powerful laser beams. But at this
point, it's theoretical and no one knows if we could
actually avert a collision with a comet in time.

Who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance?

Recently, an appeals court in California ruled that the
phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance was
unconstitutional. The ruling caused a furor. What not many
people know, however, is that the phrase "under God" was
never in the ORIGINAL Pledge of Allegiance. Written by
Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister, in honor of Columbus
Day in 1892, the Pledge began its life as a piece in a
magazine. The words "under God" weren't in it. Bellamy
himself had socialist leanings and had been forced out of
his own church because of them. His granddaughter says he
would have resented the addition of the words "under God" to
the Pledge. He envisioned the Pledge uniting a country
divided by race, class, and religion.

Optimize Life Now™ . . . with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
-----------------

Telling The Tough Truth

You have all had the experience of either having to tell the
tough truth...or, of having wanted to tell the tough truth.
Two things are true about this experience. It is not always
easy to tell, and it is not often easy to hear! So what can
you do to make both those things easier, and not compromise
yourself by not saying what you believe needs to be said?

First, you can be prepared. When you know that you are
heading into a situation that could be touchy or difficult,
where emotions may run high, or where harm could be done if
care was not taken, prepare yourself. Be clear about your
issues and concerns, and about your boundaries. If you
have completely thought through your reasons, reactions and
responses to the situation, you will be far better prepared
to express yourself clearly.

Secondly, be assertive rather than aggressive. Assertive
statements contain no blame and no attack. Conveying both
information and feelings objectively is respectful.
Remember, when you are speaking about your feelings, you
need to own them. Do not suggest that someone else creates
those feelings for you...they are your particular reaction
to your perceptions. When you need to tell the tough truth,
take the time to express yourself fully. Give your
perspective on the situation, your feelings about the
situation and your wants regarding the situation.

Here is an example: " I get very concerned when deadlines
are approaching and I feel that the team is not pulling
together well. It is my responsibility to bring this
project in on time and it is important to me to do to this.
This requires everyone being focused and collaborative."
This example demonstrates communication skills that lead to
problem-solving dialogue.

Thirdly, you can be specific about what you want to happen
or how you want to be treated. Whether in a work, family or
social relationship, it is important that you take
responsibility for teaching people how to treat you. If you
do not tell someone how their behavior affects you, and it
affects you negatively, then you are silently telling them
that it is all right will you. Done assertively, not
aggressively, most people will listen and respect your
boundaries. If they do not or will not, that is important
information for you. You may choose to remove yourself from
the relationship. Also, when someone treats you well, be
sure to tell him or her how much you appreciate it. Catching
folks 'doing this right' is the best teaching tool of all!

Telling the truth is sometimes difficult, however, living
with frustration, dishonesty or anxiety is more difficult.
Learning to tell the truth respectfully promotes good
relationships. John Powell wrote that "The genius of good
communication is to be totally kind and totally honest at
the same time." Practice can create that genius!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

Blood, Its Circulation And Its Pressure
PART 7 of 10

Anemia is a condition in which there is a reduction in oxygen
cell delivery to the tissues. This is due to a reduction in the
number of red cells throughout the body: not just in one area.
It may result from increased destruction of red cells, excessive
blood loss or decreased production of red cells.
http://www.yourbloodcenter.org/glossary.htm
There are many types and potential causes of anemia.

Another health condition could be cancers in the form of
leukemia where you can have too many white blood cells and too
few platelets (for clotting) and red blood cells for carrying
oxygen. So you can see how a person could easily be tired (not
enough oxygen). They could have many infections, an imbalance in
white blood cells and red blood cells and could bleed more
easily. (Platelets missing.)

As mentioned earlier, hemoglobin is the most important component
of red blood cells. It is a protein that carries oxygen from the
lungs to the body's tissues, and carbon dioxide from the tissues
to the lungs to be exhaled (waste products). Abnormalities of an
individual's hemoglobin can effect red blood cell balance, which
in turn can effect many body functions, including energy levels.
Both low and high values can indicate unhealthy states. It's
always about balance. But think of it, if you can't get enough
oxygen being carried to your cells, you will be really depleted
in energy and that affects all you do or are motivated to do.
And this is what blood pressure is all about. It pushes blood
throughout the body with regular beats or contractions of your
heart, twenty-four hours a day. And the goal is to have a
sizable spread from the systolic reading to the diastolic
reading. That will indicate a healthy heart at work and then at
rest or recovery.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

4Now for the story

"Ohhh! I think it's time."

"Sharon, honey, that's okay. We'll take care of you."
Alewka sent a message out to Kenyata, Mae and Susan. She
asked the men to pick Sharon up and bring her into a hut
that Sam and Alewka shared while here.

There was much scrambling.

"Mom. What is happening?""

"Tim, son, you are about to become a Father."

Kenyata, Mae and Susan came running. "How can we help?"

Alewka gave out orders like a sergeant in the army.
Within minutes all the material needed was there, sterile
and ready. Kenyata had delivered babies before, for other
ladies in the village, so she was a natural here.

Alewka came out the door of the hut to speak to a group
of worried men.

"Sharon is about to give birth. You men will hear her
scream. Don't worry. She will be all right. Stay here. I
will let you know when all is okay for you to come in. Sam,
hold on to this one." Alewka pointed to her first born son,
Tim.

"I got him honey. You go do what you have to do." Sam
put his arms around Tim's shoulder just at the moment a
blood curdling scream came from the hut. Tim turned and was
about to run into the hut. Sam grabbed him.

"Son. The ladies will look after all that. Childbirth
hurts, but it is over fast. Stay here. Your time will come."

"But, Dad. That was awful. I've never heard such blood
curdling screams before."

"I know, son. All is well."

There were two or three more screams from inside the hut
and then all was quiet. Then it happened.

SWATT. "Wahhhhhh"

The baby cried and was still crying. Then it stopped.
The ladies were cleaning up and tending to both Mother and
child. Alewka took the baby in her arms and presented the
boy to his mother.

"Honey, you have a fine baby boy. He's a beauty. You
throw nice looking babies Sharon." Alewka gave the baby to
Sharon. She cuddled the wee one.

"Sharon, honey, I think I should go show the baby to its
Father. What do you say?"

"Oh, Mom, yes. Have Tim come in."

"I will, honey, but let me show the baby around, okay"?"

Sharon reluctantly released the baby to Alewka who
walked outside the hut.

"Well, son, you have a fine baby boy. Congratulations.
Sam, you're a grandpa again."

Tim walked up to his Mother. She held the child out for
him to take. Tim wasn't quite sure what to do. He was almost
afraid of handling the child for fear he drop it.

"Come on, son. Babies are tough." Alewka forcibly placed
the newborn into her son's arms.

A crowd gathered. Here on this day a new baby was born
in this village, and on this, such an important day. The
birth nearly eclipsed the wedding, mostly because the
wedding was now over and the feast was beginning.

Billy and Sonora saw the baby, as did Tom and Tlang and
Amenti and Reno. All were in awe and knew this kind of thing
was in their future, too.

"Dad, I think it is time for us to go. Enjoy the rest of
the wedding and take care of Tim, Sharon and the wee one."

Billy knew the time was right for them to leave. Amenti
and Reno picked up on the cue, as did Tom and Tlang.

Sam took Amenti and Reno , Ben took Tom and Tlang, and
Maz took Billy and Sonora. The three men delivered their
"couple" to their alone time place. All the huts had been
prepared with flowers, champagne and a three day supply of
food. It was wonderful and each couple knew this was right
for them.

Tom and Tlang settled right in. The day was warm, the
river gave off a cooling breeze and there were no animals
crossing at the moment, although herds were amassing.

There were flowers everywhere, as well as a bottle of
chilled champagne. They offered Ben a drink before he left.
Ben declined.

Sam had taken Amenti and Reno into an isolated spot in
the Grand Canyon. They, too, were next to a river, in this
case the Colorado. There had been a hut built for them and
they were some excited about finally being left alone to do
what comes naturally. They had waited for this for a long
time and that it happened today had been a complete
surprise.

"Thank you Sam. Thank you. This is beautiful. Thank
you." Amenti was in awe of the canyon, plus the time and
circumstance.

"Settle in you two, and when you are ready you can visit
us any time you wish. No one will come calling without the
courtesy of letting you know in advance. You enjoy each
other and we'll see you in a month." With that Sam Henry had
completed his task and was back in the village in Africa,
next to his wife.

Ben Striker appeared almost immediately as did Maz.

All couples were safe and accounted for.

Now for the new life that just joined them.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Quack: Why is a medical charlatan pretending to be a
physician called a "quack"?

Because he boasts of his salves. "Quack" is really an
abbreviation of "quacksalver" which comes from the Dutch
"kwakzalver" - and this has this idea of "quacking about
one's salves." But the idea behind all these terms is that
the ""quack" is like the duck- he makes a big noise over
nothing.
