How big was the dodo?
Pretty darn big. Unlike the pigeons we see on a regular
basis, the dodo could weigh as much as fifty pounds!
How come dodos were unable to fly?
They weren't always unable to fly. Evidence indicates that
the dodo's ancestors migrated over 3,000 miles of ocean
before deciding to set up house on the island of Mauritius
in the Indian Ocean. Once ensconced on the island, safe from
predators, the bird may have evolved to be bigger (to defend
territory from other birds), while giving up the ability to
fly.

Iran threatens to strike at US targets if attacked
By Alireza Ronaghi
TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran vowed on Wednesday to strike at U.S.
interests worldwide if it is attacked by the United States,
which is keeping military options open in case diplomacy
fails to curb Tehran's nuclear program.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made the threat two
days before the U.N. nuclear watchdog reports on whether
Iran is meeting Security Council demands to halt uranium
enrichment.
Iran says it will not stop enrichment, which it says is
purely for civilian purposes and not part of what the United
States says is a clandestine effort to make atomic bombs.
"The Americans should know that if they assault Iran their
interests will be harmed anywhere in the world that is
possible," Khamenei was quoted as saying by state
television.
"The Iranian nation will respond to any blow with double the
intensity," he said.
Washington, backed by Britain and France, has been pushing
for sanctions if, as it expects, the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) reports that Iran has flouted U.N.
demands.
But Russia and China, the U.N. Security Council's other two
veto-holding permanent members, oppose any embargo.
Consequently the Western powers next week will not push a
sanctions resolution. Instead they are working on a
resolution that would make legally binding previous demands
contained in a March council statement.
If Iran does not comply after a reasonable period of time,
the United States and its allies will try to introduce
punitive measures in a subsequent resolution, a council
diplomat said.
Iran's nuclear energy head, Gholamreza Aghazadeh, held talks
with IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei in Vienna Wednesday.
"The talks were encouraging," Mohammad Saeedi, deputy head
of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, told Reuters, adding
the two sides discussed ways to resolve outstanding issues
with the IAEA. He gave no details.
NO TIME
But a Vienna-based diplomat said before the meeting it would
be too late to alter decisively the IAEA report, due to be
submitted to the Security Council by Friday, because
inspectors would not have time to verify issues.
"All ElBaradei can do is note any information received and
say he could not assess whether it was significant," said
the diplomat, who asked not to be named.
ElBaradei visited Tehran this month but his proposal that
Iran "pause" enrichment was rebuffed, diplomats have said.
British Foreign Minister Jack Straw sought to enlist China's
backing Wednesday, saying Beijing should use its growing
diplomatic muscle to solve disputes with international
partners.
"China's support for this goal, as a permanent member of the
Security Council, has been valuable already and will be
increasingly crucial in securing international consensus in
the face of Iran's intransigence," Straw said in London.

Bones: Dont Take Your Support
System For Granted
PART 4 of 9
Systemically, bones also provide the housing for the
formation of blood cells in the bone marrow. Bones help
to stabilize your body fluids. And they participate in
metabolizing nutrients, thus feeding the body. Another
major assignment they have is the storage of minerals
including calcium and phosphorous. (Somehow a depletion
in phosphorous isnt as apparent.) We really never pay
any attention to how our body gets the nourishment to
do all its jobs. But this comes through blood
circulating throughout the body automatically. Both
calcium and phosphorous are deposited in the bone when
they are plentiful and removed when needed elsewhere in
the body. (Supply and demand.) It is crucial to
understand this concept. I truly believe it is the
basis for understanding osteoporosis. Essentially your
body shares everything. In a healthy body, adequate
amounts of calcium and phosphorus are in good supply.
Sharing is not a problem. However when your body is
provided with inadequate amounts of calcium (through
poor nutrition), and other areas need it as well to
function, sharing could now become a major problem.
Doesnt it make sense that something will be depleted?
And depletion will weaken this bone structure and
protective mechanism. It will start to cave in. Bones
need to be stressed. Any bones that are not
"stressed/used" will waste away (atrophy).
When things go wrong. How can bones be damaged?
Basically something has to interrupt the actions of the
bone (renewal) formation and constant functions. It may
be a tumour (lesion) or a bruise such as stubbing your
toe. It could be a fracture. That is the correct term
for breaking the actual hard surface: all the way or
partially. It could be a twist as in a sprain or
shoulder displacement. It could be a splinter as in a
greenstick fracture in a child. Young children's bones
are not yet strong and firm. They can get greenstick
fractures easily by falling off a bike. (The name for
this concept comes from the analogy of trying to break
a new tree branch. It splits instead of breaking
because it hasnt had time to grow in strength.) It's a
very bad idea to pick a child up by their arm. This can
easily dislocate their shoulder and cause the muscles
and ligaments to be loose later on in life. It can also
cause greenstick fractures of the upper arm. At the
other end of the aging scale, many older people with
brittle bones can have a very easy and quick break
(lack of calcium). Often they will use their hands to
protect themselves as they loose their balance and
fall, and end up with a Colles fracture (a certain type
of wrist fracture). In my Operating Room days, I helped
patch up many a grandmother who wanted to get something
off an upper shelf by standing on a chair, and falling.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

4Now for the story
Tom Henry backed right off. This was a surprise to him.
He had never seen Tlang like this before. It scared him.
Tlang had displayed a reluctant willingness to
participate in sex. She was not her usual enthusiastic self.
It was clear to Tom that in this area of her life she was
having some trouble. He did not quite understand it but he
knew that continued animalistic pursuit of his objective
would only alienate her further.
"Tom, what is it?" Tlang knew, of course. "Oh, I know. I
thought I had gotten rid of those thoughts and feelings
years ago. It seems that all I did was put them in the back
of my head and busied myself with other, more acceptable
things. I'm sorry, Tom. I did not expect this either. Can we
talk?"
"Of course, honey." That was the last thing Tom wanted
to do. Here, now, in his mind he should be completely free
to have sex with his wife, that there were no further
impediments to experiencing what he thought they both
wanted.
Tlang, on the other hand, realized that because they had
agreed there would be no sex before marriage, she felt
"safe" and she was free to explore and feel what she wanted
without fear of having to do the things she was forced to do
as a child.
She, therefore, had displayed a free and enthusiastic
performance in all their "just about but not quite" sessions
that nearly had them go all the way.
Now, it was different. They were married and like it or
not Tlang knew she would have to go all the way. To her
horror, from out of her very distant past came images,
thoughts, feelings and terror at what she had experienced as
a child sex slave. She was fearful, reluctant, scared. She
didn't know what to do and she knew Tom didn't know what to
do. She also knew this could not continue. She had to do
something.
"Honey, what is it?"
"Tom, I don't know for sure. I want to tell you
something. I never told you how I happened to become a
friend of Mae and Susan. Oh, I told you they found me in a
restaurant and when I displayed I wanted to go with them
they took me along. I didn't tell you what I was doing in
that restaurant."
"I know, honey, but I can see the picture very clearly
now. Why didn't you tell me before?"
"When I was young, I found it easier to forget those
things if I just kept myself busy doing something else. I
guess I set up the habit and never again really looked at
it. Now that I live by higher law I clearly know and
understand the need for sex between two like us. I don't
really have any problem with that Tom. I want it too. It is
just that from out of nowhere these old thoughts and
feelings came rushing in. I couldn't help it. I didn't know
they would come back."
Tom reached out to her and pulled her close. He truly
loved this woman with every cell in his body. He said
nothing, just held her. She sensed his need and his resolve
not to do anything about it.
"Tom, honey. I'm sorry."
"Sweetheart, all couples have challenges. Everybody in
earth has things they must learn or overcome or work out.
That is the very nature of life, growth and happiness. I
know you didn't expect this. We will work it out together. I
want you to know that I love you so much that if we never
had sex I still want to be with you the rest of my life."
Tlang wept. The tears were coming in gushers, even
though she wasn't vocal. She knew she wanted this man. She
knew he meant what he said. She knew he would not force her
and that it was up to her. Her tears were making his chest
wet. As she lay her head on his chest it would no longer
stay where she put it because the tears were lubricating the
space between her face and his chest.
She moved her hand around on his chest and stomach. She
moved her hand, now, a little lower toward his genitals.
"Tlang, honey, you don't have to do this."
"Oh, Tom. I want you and I have to overcome this thing.
I cannot live with it forever. I have to face it head on and
deal with it. I, too, love you and I want to make you happy
in every way I possibly can."
Tlang well knew, from her childhood experience, what she
had to do to have Tom experience satisfaction. It wasn't
that she was ignorant of that. What the problem was is that
she didn't want to cause Tom to be satisfied as a
perfunctory thing, as he might experience from a whore on
the street. She wanted to be a true, loving, enthusiastic
part of this experience as a man and wife ought to be.
Tom was reading her thoughts all the way along. He could
see what was going through her mind. He loved her for it and
right there committed to forcing no issues. He wanted her to
overcome this so the pair of them could enjoy this part of
their lives anytime in the future. He didn't feel
particularly gracious, but selfish. He would certainly work
with Tlang in the short run to gain long run benefits.

HA! HA! HA!
Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a
contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest
was to find the most caring child.
The winner was a four year old child whose next door
neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his
wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the
old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat
there. When his Mother asked what he had said to the
neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him
cry"
