ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

--------------

Actually, the mighty Niagara Falls has run dry several
times. In March 1848, both the American falls and the
Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side slowed to a trickle
when an ice jam formed on Lake Erie, blocking the water that
flows along the Niagara River and over the falls. A few
brave souls explored the dry riverbed that day, finding all
sorts of interesting relics from the War of 1812: tomahawks,
old muskets, bayonets. Other (less brave) souls went to
special church services, fearful that the unusual event was
a terrible omen. Thirty hours after the falls stopped, they
started running again when warmer weather dislodged the ice.
In 1969, US authorities actually turned the American falls
off to make repairs. The Americans diverted the river for
seven months while the US Army Corp of Engineers were at
What are bull and bear markets?

A bear market is one where stock prices are dropping. (Some
experts say you officially have a bear market when stocks
drop twenty percent from the peak.) A bull market is a
market where stocks are rising. A good way to remember which
is which is to think of the relative speed of the animals.
Bears are cautious animals who generally don't move too
fast. In a bear market, wise investors should act the same.
A bull boldly charges ahead. In a bull market, that's not
such a terrible idea. (Another way to remember: think of the
bull's horns, tossing his prey upward.) How in the world did
we get these names? According to Lynette Padwa's excellent
book, Everything You Pretend to Know and Are Afraid Someone
Will Ask, the terms have a frontier history. Padwa reports
that bearskin jobbers were notorious for selling the
animals' skins before the bears had actually been trapped.
In the stock market, a person who sold shares in a stock he
didn't own came to be known as a bear. A bear would look for
stocks he thought might drop in price, and buy them when
they went down. BEFORE actually buying them, though, he'd
arrange to sell shares of the stock at a certain, higher,
price. The plan only worked if the stock's price kept
dropping. Thus a bear market became a market where prices
were falling. The bull market, says Padwa, most likely got
its name simply as the opposite of bear. Bulls and bears
were both used in the frontier sports of bull and bear
baiting and therefore were linked in most people's minds.

Why did an extra pin get added to the game of bowling?

It's true. People used to bowl at "nine-pins" rather than
"ten-pins." According to bowling historians, the practice of
using ten pins in the game of bowling actually originated in
colonial America as a means of getting around a gaming law
that forbade "bowling at nine-pins." The colonial
authorities tried to quash the sport because too many
colonists were gambling on it. To avoid punishment for
disobeying the law, bowlers decided to add an extra pin and
call it...ten-pins. ("Hey, there's no crime here, officer.
As you can clearly see, we are NOT bowling at nine-pins.")

Blood, Its Circulation And Its Pressure
PART 2 of 8

When you are at the scene of an accident, what is one of the
first things that paramedics do? They take a "blood pressure".
That's an indication of its importance. Lastly I would like to
tell you why donating blood is a good thing for most people: why
you might want to share it with someone who is struggling to
stay alive.

Let's start with blood and what it is... As you will see
shortly, blood has a crucial and very specific purpose. If
something is abnormal, the fulfillment of its purpose is
interrupted or changed. Your blood's mission is to keep you
alive and well. Its purpose is to provide you with nutrients,
oxygen, and chemicals, and to remove waste products. Blood is a
liquid made up of several parts including red blood cells
(erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets
(thrombocytes). It carries these nutrients, chemicals and
oxygen.

"Hemoglobin" is the red pigment in red blood cells. It
transports oxygen. It is the most important part of the blood.
Red blood cells are known as "Erythrocytes" in medical
terminology. Their purpose is to carry oxygen and a small amount
of carbon dioxide. Blood that carries oxygen is called
oxygenated blood. Without oxygen, your body cannot live. White
blood cells are known as leukocytes. And there are several types
including granulocytes, lymphocytes, and monocytes. Leukocytes
are meant to fight infections. They are part of the inflammatory
process, which is part of your body's immune system. Leukocytes
are responsible for the elimination of bacteria, fungi, and
viruses. Platelets (thrombocytes) are part of a cell and are
responsible for blood clotting.
http://www.yourbloodcenter.org/glossary.htm

Red blood cells that are filled with oxygen are known
"collectively" as "oxygenated blood". It is bright red.
De-oxygenated" blood (oxygen removed) will look darker compared
to oxygenated blood. When it shows up in the skin, it is called
cyanosis. In a trauma, it is fairly easy to see if an artery or
vein is cut by the colour of the blood and the pressure with
which it shows up. An artery will spurt bright red blood, while
a vein produces dark slower moving blood. Serum or plasma is
what is left after the "solids" are removed.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Why The Book? Why The Title?

For over a year I have researched “Global
Warming”. I wanted to know exactly what that meant to me. I
wanted to know if it would change my life or if it would
have any affect on me at all.

What I found scared Hell out of me. I found global warming
is the least of our problems. I found our governments and
news media are talking about global warming all the time
because that is where they want to keep your attention
focused. They do not want you to see what else is happening.

There are very serious issues coming at us from petroleum
shortages. Ethanol is using up food producing land, in spite
of the government trying to tell you otherwise and on top
of that there is a blight that kills wheat crops that is
sweeping across the world.

There are other issues we aren’t being told, also. Global
dimming is reducing our food output and the population is
increasing at the approximate rate of one billion every 10
years.

Medicine and science are having a terrible time trying to
control “Superbugs” and they are finding more diseases daily
that are resistant to any form of medication.

In all I learned our future is going to change drastically.
Disease and food shortages, on top of safe drinking water
shortages, promise to literally kill billions of people.

What is worse, it is an inexorable, progressive event over
which man has no control and where man can do
nothing to stop it.

It will not matter how much you hope things will be better
or stay the same - THEY WILL NOT.

The information had to be presented to you so you know what
will be happening. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND you sign up at the

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Lagniappe? What is the origin of the term "lagniappe"?

This name for a trifling gift from a merchant to his
customer originated in New Orleans. The Quichuan Indian
language has a word yapa with the same meaning. In Caribbean
countries this is generally napa. The French of New Orleans,
is adopting this term, added the article, la.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for

HA! HA! HA!

One Sunday morning, everyone in one bright, beautiful, tiny
town got up early and went to the local church.

Before the services started, the townspeople were sitting in
their pews and talking about their lives, their families,
etc. Suddenly, Satan appeared at the front of the church.
Everyone started screaming and running for the front
entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get
away from evil incarnate.

Soon everyone was evacuated from the church, except for one
elderly gentleman who sat calmly in his pew, not moving...
seemingly oblivious to the fact that God's ultimate enemy
was in his presence. Now this confused Satan a bit, so he
walked up to the man and said, "Don't you know who I am?"

The man replied, "Yep, sure do."

Satan asked, "Aren't you afraid of me?"

"Nope, sure ain't," said the man.

Satan was a little perturbed at this and queried, "Why
aren't you afraid of me?"

The man calmly replied, "Been married to your sister for
over 48 years."
