Peak Oil

Here is an excerpt from a letter I received . . .

" . . . I argue that we are already at peak oil. Our govt knows this. That is why
our troops are in the mideast, to seize remaining oil supplies,to bring them
under our military control. That argument implies that those troops are
not coming home.

The push for ethanol is also a peak oil issue. Why else would we move
part of our food supply into fuel. Cleaner air? Climate warming? All
ruses and public hype.

Another choice coming soon... electric supply vs more carbon dioxide.
How long will public interest in warming last if that means extended
brown outs and blackouts when coal is available to provide that electricity?
What politician will remain in office waving the pro-blackout flag? . . ."

Learn that "GLOBAL WARMING" is the least of man's problems and
you will see they keep that front and center so you will not see the
other things coming at us.

What is the Leanan-Sidhe?

The Leanan-Sidhe is an Irish fairy, often thought to be the
inspiration of poets and minstrels. Her name means "the
fairy sweetheart." In Ireland, she's regarded as a positive
spirit. However, those on the Isle of Man regard the
sweetheart fairy as a vampirish creature, who attaches
herself to a single person until she has drained the life
force out of him. That's why poets are often said to live
intense and passionate lives, but to die young.

Has there ever been an amphibious passenger car?

Yes, indeedy. The Amphicar, the only amphibious passenger
automobile to be mass-produced, was made by the Germans in
the 1960s. (Amphibious, of course, means it drives on the
land AND on the water.) Most of the approximately 3,700 cars
produced were imported into the US. The Amphicar was a rear
engined convertible with a 4-cylinder engine. Its top speed
on water was 7 mph and 70 mph on land. At least 500
Amphicars are still in regular use. Interested in buying one

Melamine in pet food may not be accidental
By Elizabeth Weise and Julie Schmit, USA TODAY

A nitrogen-rich chemical used to make plastic and sometimes
as a fertilizer may have been deliberately added to an
ingredient in pet food that has sickened and killed cats and
dogs across the country, public and private officials say. A
leading theory is that it was added to fake higher protein
levels.

Melamine has been found in wheat gluten, rice protein
concentrate and, in South Africa, corn gluten, all imported
from China, and all meant for use in pet food, the Food and
Drug Administration confirmed Thursday.

"It adds to the theory when you see other products that are
labeled as protein supplements, in this case rice protein,
and in South Africa corn gluten and in the previous case
wheat gluten," said Stephen Sundlof, FDA chief veterinarian.
"That melamine was found in all three of those, it would
certainly lend credibility to the theory that this was
intentional."

How the melamine got there is "not something we're going to
be able to determine until we actually investigate the
plants in China," he said.

The FDA has not yet been able to get letters of invitation
from the Chinese government that would allow its inspectors
to enter the country, he said.

ChemNutra, which imported the wheat gluten linked to last
month's massive pet-food recall, says it is concerned its
Chinese supplier spiked the product.

In a letter on ChemNutra's website, Chief Executive Steve
Miller said, "We are concerned that we may have been the
victim of deliberate and mercenary contamination for the
purpose of making the wheat gluten we purchased appear to
have a higher protein content than it did."

Melamine is "simply not a chemical even on the radar screen
for food ingredient suppliers," he wrote.

But it does have a lot of nitrogen in it, says Ron Madl,
director of Kansas State University's Bioprocessing and
Industrial Value Added program. The most common way to test
protein levels in the grain industry is to test for
nitrogen, a major component of protein.

Adding melamine, with its high amount of nitrogen, to wheat
gluten would give the illusion of a higher protein content,
Madl said.

On Wednesday, San Francisco-based Wilbur-Ellis recalled all
of its rice protein concentrate, imported from China, after
FDA tests found melamine in it.

The Blue Buffalo Co. on Thursday recalled some of its Spa
Select Kitten dry food because it contained rice protein
concentrate from Wilbur-Ellis.

Wilbur-Ellis says five pet-food makers got the concentrate.
More recalls are possible, the FDA said Thursday. Natural
Balance Pet Foods said it had found melamine in two of its
venison-based products, and so it did a recall. Its food was
made by Diamond Pet Foods, which got the concentrate from
Wilbur-Ellis.

The FDA said Thursday it is inspecting all incoming
shipments of rice protein concentrate and wheat gluten from
China.

Press reports out of South Africa say tests have confirmed
that some Royal Canin pet food made there contained corn
gluten imported from China that had melamine in it.

Sundlof said the FDA has no information that any of that
corn gluten went to U.S. pet-food makers.

Blood, Its Circulation And Its Pressure
PART 8 of 8

Use the machines in the pharmacies or supermarket, but stick to
one machine. The readings aren't the same, so don't compare the
readings. But here is a way to compare the readings "fairly".
Use the same machine, at about the same time of the day each
time you check it. Wear roughly the same type of clothing each
time. And don't pull up the shirtsleeve: it will block
circulation at the upper arm. To get a comparable reading you
might go every fourth day, at about noon to the local pharmacy
(where you also keep all your prescriptions and buy all your
"over the counter" products), and wear the nice cotton shirt
with light sweater. (Heavy sweatshirts will not allow proper
readings.) Take a few minutes to relax. Then put your arm, with
the shirtsleeve still buttoned and sweater in place, into the
arm holder, press the button, and wait for it to inflate.

Don't believe the reading? Do it again, BUT wait for at least
five minutes. Keep your composure or the measurement will be
even higher. When you repeat this, don't change anything. Get
another reading and then compare. Some food (salt) or beverages
(caffeine, alcohol), or medications can often change the
results. A "not so friendly drive" over might also have changed
the reading substantially. Did you know that a visit to the
doctors' office will really raise your blood pressure? It's a
proven fact and its called "white coat syndrome". Record your
readings and take the record to the doctor regularly. Pick up a
pamphlet from the pharmacist on how to interpret the readings or
ask them for help. The first time you get ready to take your
blood pressure reading, take the time to read the machine
instructions. I have often been challenged when I tell people to
keep the sleeves of their shirts smoothed and down. It tells you
on the machine! So read all the instructions. You will feel much
more confident in knowing you are doing this correctly. It's not
brain surgery, but it is very important to your health. It may
mean the difference between having to be on medication and
avoiding it. Try to always avoid drugs.they are chemicals that
your body has to neutralize somehow.

I'd like to end with a word about donating blood. The mission of
blood is to keep you alive and well. Its purpose is to take
oxygen, nutrients, and chemicals to your cells in all parts of
your body. You realise by now that you can't live without it. So
what happens when you find yourself without enough of your own
through illness or trauma? The obvious thing is to "borrow" it
from someone else. In hospitals, we used to give a lot of blood
transfusions. We don't do that any longer. There have been too
many problems with passing along unhealthy conditions. The gift
is still as incredibly helpful and necessary as always, but now
it's become very scarce. I have been donating blood for years.
It's part of my routine as I know how valuable it will be to
several people and to scientific research. But the rooms are
generally pretty sparse. Not so after 911! I was thrilled to see
the four hour waits! We snaked through rooms of chairs, were
given drinks at intervals, chatted with new friends or read our
books. And finally donated that precious gift of love. All of us
knew it was the only thing we could do personally to help ease
our pain. And we proudly sported our little teardrop-shaped
stickers on our chests. They read "Be kind to me: I gave blood
today"! The donation process itself may be a bit tedious but
blood is so valuable that, as with any gift you give, a little
inconvenience shouldn't stop you. Please consider becoming a
blood donor if you are healthy. And helping others is a purpose
for your own life. And keep in mind, all blood donation centers
now accept your blood for either yourself or someone in your
family in anticipation of a planned procedure. This is truly the
gift of life. Medical science has been developing all kinds of
practical substitutes, but nature still holds the secret to
keeping you alive long after the donated blood has outdated!

This information was intended to help you understand your body
and its functions. If you have a medical problem, please seek
appropriate advice.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as

Intention Or Not - Troubles Are Coming!

Some of you will be happy we are back to the regular format
for thePEBBLE.

Last week I concentrated on some of the issues surrounding
the launch of the book and the subjects it covers. That is a
pretty scary thing to face every day so I’ve toned it down
some.

Yet I see the world is still going on its merry way. There
has been a meat recall up and down the west coast. Three
youngsters contracted an E.coli that hospitalized them. It
came from meat that had been processed a year earlier.
Authorities seem to have it under control but that is scary.

I see now they think the poison addition to pet foods may be
purposeful. Sometimes I wonder what kind of a mind could do
things like that. Oh well. I guess it is the same kind of
mind that today told Palestinians to attack Israel.

The trend here, with food poisoning, is not nice to think
about. Consider oil peaking, land taken out of food
production in favor of ethanol, a wheat blight that is
sweeping the world and then poor processing or intentional
action poisons our food supply.

In the overall folks I can’t help but see troubles
developing. It would be worth your while to subscribe at

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

O.K.: Where did we get the expression "O.K."?

From the Presidential election of 1840. The Democratic
candidate, Martin Van Buren, was nicknamed "The Wizard of
Kinderhook" - after "Old Kinderhook", the Hudson Valley
village in which he had been born. In reference to this
village and Van Buren's nickname one of the Democratic
groups formed to support him in New York City called itself
"The Democratic O.K. Club." Other supporters of Van Buren in
New York picked up the term "O.K." as a sort of slogan, and
Democratic rowdies used it as their war cry in their
attempts to break up meetings of Whigs. the phrase caught on
generally and soon established itself as synonymous with the
feeling of the original club members that they and their
candidates were "all right."
