What The World Thinks . . .
(These tidbits come from letters I receive and are exclusively
the opinion of the writers. Yet they serve to show you the depth of
attitude and opinion out there.)

Here is an excerpt from a letter I received . . .

" . . . I think there won't be much difference between immigrants
and anybody else when push comes to shove. Class is what
matters, not culture. Hungry desperate people are nasty.

The real issue will be food. How will people living in say
the U.S. interior, the southwest, and the urban northeast
eat? You can't grow food year round in most of those places,
and most people don't know anything about gardening.

I just watched the Cuba doc about peak oil "The Power OF
Community". The Cubans managed their peak by

a) strong authoritarian contral gov't--> no democracy, but
intelligent centralised planning made for very efficient
mass solutions (i.e. if gov't organises it, you can breed
5000 steers for ploughing much more efficiently than if 5000
farmers each tries to do one on their own)

b) most people have no weapons in Cuba = low crime.

c) you can garden/farm year round

d) they abandoned some of their socialist ideology and allowed
privatised small plots of land and food sales, combined with gov't
food vouchers-- very successful.

e) accepting social equality-- gap between wealthy and poor
in Cuba is not very great-- strong impact on crime as crime
(outside of inherently deviant individuals) has much to do
with social status frustrations.

f) socialised medicine and education, strong gov't support of
the unemployed-- reduced crime, made people's lives easier no less
stressful

g) above all-- community collaboration.

Most of these things are necessary for getting through peak;
most are un-American, heh heh. . . ."

Learn that "GLOBAL WARMING" is the least of man's problems . . .

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

So why do people in so many other countries drive on the
right, then?

Blame it on France. During the period of the French
Revolution, the French began to drive on the right. Some say
it was just part of the country's sweeping social reforms.
Others blame it on the left-handed Napoleon. One explanation
is that the French aristocracy drove their carriages at
great speed on the left-hand side of the road, forcing the
peasants over to the right side for their own safety. When
the revolution started, the aristocrats joined the peasants
on the right side as a matter of self-preservation. ("Hey,
guys, I may be rich, but I'm a peasant at heart!") The first
official record of this was a keep-right rule introduced in
Paris in 1794. So, England is left, France is right. What
about the rest of the world? Well, any part of the world
that was at some time colonized by the British followed the
British way and any part colonized by the French followed
the French way. So India, Australia, and much of Africa
drove on the left (although many African countries changed
when they gained independence), and Egypt and much of Europe
drove on the right. In America, the French colonized the
southern states, such as Louisiana, and the Canadian east
coast, and the British colonized parts of the rest of the
country (of course, the Dutch, Spanish, and Portuguese got
in there, too). However, when the Americans were severing
ties with the British, they adopted the keep-right policy of
the French. Once the US began driving on the right and
producing cars, many other countries adopted the practice
out of necessity. Today, only about a quarter of the world
drives on the left and they live mostly in countries that
once made up the British Empire.

What about Japan?

Japan drives on the left. This, too, can be attributed to
the British. In the 1850s, gunboat diplomacy forced the
Japanese to open their ports to the British. Sir Rutherford
Alcock, Queen Victoria's representative to the Japanese
court, persuaded them to adopt the keep-left rule.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!

The sketch that Jack drew of Rose wearing the famous
necklace in the blockbuster movie "Titanic" was really drawn
by director James Cameron. The hands that we see drawing
the sketch are really Cameron's. Cameron was also
responsible for all the other sketches that were in Jack's
sketchbook.

For All Things - A Season!

A parish priest was being honored at a dinner on the
25th anniversary of his arrival in that parish. A leading
local politician, who was a member of the congregation,
was chosen to make the presentation and give
a little speech at the dinner, but he was delayed in
traffic. Sooo.....the priest decided to say his own few
words while they waited.

"You will understand," he said, "the seal of the
confessional, can never be broken. However, I got
my first impressions of this parish from the first confession
I heard here. I can only hint vaguely about this, but
when I came here 25 years ago, I thought I had been
assigned to a terrible place. The very first chap who
entered my confessional told me how he had stolen a
television set and, when stopped by the police, had
almost murdered the officer. Further, he told me he
had embezzled money from his place of business
and had an affair with his boss's wife. I was appalled.
But as the days went on I knew that my people were
not all like that, and I had, indeed come to, a fine
parish full of understanding and loving people."

Just as the priest finished his talk, the politician
arrived full of apologies for being late. He
immediately began to make the presentation
and give his talk.

"I'll never forget the first day our parish priest arrived
in this parish," said the politician. "In fact, I had
the honor of being the first one to go to him in
confession."

Well that did it. Coming in late, not knowing the speech
that was just delivered he went ahead and opened his
mouth to a complete confession to the public.

Had the politician been aware he would, of course,
altered his speech. Yet he should have been aware of
something else too. He should have known that for all
things there is a season.

Men surprise me sometimes. They do things they know
are wrong and they sincerely think they will get away
with it. Few there are who are wise enough to know the
law "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." Most of us today know
that law by other words such as "The chickens you send
out are the chickens that come home to roost" or "What
goes around, comes around."

In the joke above, the politician was not subject to a
conspiracy of events he unwittingly stumbled into. It was
simply and merely the continued and always active law
that ensures each of us gets what we give.

What it all means is that sooner or later, somehow or
other a man's deeds are always found out - always. For
everything there is a season.

That a person is not caught at the instant an offense
occurs is no sign that one will get away with it. Months,
even years can go by without public knowledge of a
persons acts, yet, one day it will be revealed.

The worst part, of course, and this is where misdeeds
cost, is the guilty conscience one carries with him.
Because that is emotionally charged it gets buried deep
in the subconscious. That guilt will sit there to affect a
person's life in negative ways a person will not even see.
Let it be known it will cause one to pay dearly for
misdeeds one wants to keep secret.

However, the politician opened his own mouth to reveal
truth. He should have known that...

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson

What If...Reflecting On Chemicals Going Into Your Body
PART 3 of 5

As I mentioned previously, people don't contact us unless they
want to understand their negative health condition. In our
conversation I often ask if they are taking any "meds". I am
never surprised now as to what medications people do take. What
still surprises me is that they don't feel they should have any
side effects!

In one recent conversation, a lady told me how very careful she
was with her food intake: no prepared foods, no junk foods, no
preservatives, no canned goods, no alcohol, and no smoking. Then
she told me the drugs she was on. It turns out that she is on
three different pills for high blood pressure, more for
cholesterol, plus something to "enhance her thyroid" and several
other "natural" vitamins. She had never ever connected drugs and
side effects or complications! An added concern for me privately
was that both her blood pressure and her cholesterol
measurements were within "normal range". She was given these as
a preventative measure.

In nursing we are taught that 2 drugs interact and the third
will be prescribed to handle the side effects of the other two.
It might be interesting for you to realise that the Physician's
Desk Reference (PDR) has NINE single-spaced pages of drugs whose
possible side effects include tinnitus. She contacted us because
she had severe tinnitus!

I find it fascinating when people tell me their symptoms and I
then ask if they are any meds. They often forget to tell me all
of them, thinking they would not have any connection with their
immediate problem. They forget to tell me about their meds for
their anxiety and sleeplessness. Then I ask how long they have
been on those. Most people have been on them for years! And that
goes for both men and women. I am intrigued as to why someone
would need them long-term. I believe we mature and learn new
coping methods. Our lives change with time. Incidentally many
drugs loose their effectiveness over time. If you are on some
sort of long-term meds, you need to be seen regularly and tested
for drug potency. I heard one doctor tell his radio audience
that doctors now prescribe small doses of several drugs instead
of a large dose of one!

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Let's Smell The Roses!

I was looking for something good in the news today. I
haven’t found a piece yet unless you count the news report
that Dick Cheney’s leg problem looks like it will be okay.

There are some with the point of view that might not be
good, though, because I see a set of impeachment articles
are about to be launched against him.

Elsewhere the North Koreans are holding a missile parade
with big fanfare, more trouble in Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel
and Somalia. On top of that are all our domestic political
arguments and other problems.

Where is there something good. I notice even the BBC, a
staunch Microsoft ally is claiming there are an infinite
number of attacks on Microsoft systems where there appears
to be none for Macs. (Reporting like that is one huge step
for the Beeb)

So it might be time to rejoice in nature, in spring. It
might be time to look away from what man is doing and
concentrate on all the beauty of nature. Maybe it is time to
do that on a daily basis. It is certainly good to begin ones
day in a happy frame of mind and as I look around only
nature and good music offer the environment within which I
can do that.

Let’s all smell the roses!

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Quarantine: Where does the word "quarantine" come from?

From the Italian quaranta, meaning "forty." In early days, a
ship suspected of being infected with some contagious
disease was kept outside of port for forty days-
"quarantine."

HA! HA! HA!

A woman accompanied her husband to the doctor's office.

After his checkup, the doctor called the wife into his
office alone. He said, "Your husband is suffering from a
very severe stress disorder. If you don't follow my
instructions carefully, your husband will surely die.

"Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant at
all times. For lunch make him a nutritious meal. For dinner
prepare an especially nice meal for him.

"Don't burden him with chores. Don't discuss your problems
with him; it will only make his stress worse. Do not nag
him. Most importantly, make love to him regularly.

"If you can do this for the next 10 months to a year, I
think your husband will regain his health completely."

On the way home, the husband asked his wife, "What did the
doctor say?"

"He said you're going to die," she replied.
