ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Is it true that some cicadas spend 17 years underground?
Yes. There are "annual" cicadas that appear every summer
and then there are the "periodical" kind, which emerge from
the ground in droves every 13 or 17 years (depending on
what species they are). Periodical cicadas live underground
for many years, getting nourishment from tree roots, then
emerge all at once (usually within days of each other). Once
above ground, they live only a few weeks. Just enough time
to mate and lay the groundwork for the NEXT generation.
Are cicadas the same thing as locusts?
Nope. Many people assume they're the same, but the locust
is actually a type of grasshopper.

Around The Net
Good news all around folks. We've been waiting for this.
The following is a direct excerpt from
The Center For Media Research (Wed, Aug 4/04)
Consumer Confidence Surges to Highest Since 2002
According to the Conference Board's Consumer
Confidence Index, which increased sharply in June, it
posted further gains in July, now standing at 106.1, up
from 102.8 in June. The Expectations Index jumped to
105.8 from 100.8. The Present Situation Index edged
up to 106.5 from 105.9 in June.
"Consumer confidence has now increased for four
consecutive months, and is at its highest level since
June 2002 when it registered 106.3," says Lynn Franco,
Director of The Conference Board's Consumer Research
Center. "The spring turnaround has been fueled by
gains in employment, and unless the job market sours,
consumer confidence should continue to post solid
numbers."
Consumers' expectations for the next six months are
somewhat mixed, but more optimistic than last month.
Those anticipating conditions to worsen declined to
7.0 percent from 9.1 percent. Consumers expecting
business conditions to improve remained relatively
unchanged, 23.2 percent versus 23.5 percent in June.
And BIGresearch reports consumers on a positive
note with a higher employment level than the previous
month, not as inclined to pay down debt, not deferring
purchases at the same level as the previous month,
anticipating fewer layoffs over the next 6 months, and
not as concerned with being laid off as he/she was in
June. in July, consumer confidence zoomed to 48.1%
after 4 months of a steady decline.
However, says the BIG study, consumer sentiment may
be rising at home, but perhaps issues abroad have them
more concerned with security this month...following last
week's surprise early turnover of power to the Iraqi interim
government, 24.3% say they worry more about
political/national security issues, compared to 22.9% in
June.
With increasing savings, says BIG, and paying off debt
still on consumers' minds, it looks like they're taking
advantage of sales and shopping discounters (it's STILL
all about Wal-Mart) in order to make their hard-earned
bucks stretch a bit further.
That's all folks. Have a great weekend.

JAMA Article The Use Of
Supplements In Adults
PART 1 of 2
Two commentaries:
1)All Adults Should Take a Daily Multivitamin, Recommends AMA
Journal
All adults should take a multivitamin every day, according to a
report published by two Harvard doctors in the Journal of the
American Medical Association (2002;287:3127-9). This
recommendation is based on research demonstrating that taking a
multivitamin may help prevent a number of chronic diseases,
including heart disease, some cancers, and osteoporosis.
According to the authors, the evidence is "conclusive" that
supplementing with folic acid during the first trimester of
pregnancy reduces the risk of a group of birth defects known
as neural tube defects. It is also well documented that taking
vitamin D along with calcium reduces the risk of fractures in
elderly women with thin bones (osteoporosis). A strong,
though not conclusive, case can be made that supplementing with
folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 may help prevent heart
disease by lowering Homocysteine levels. Additional
research suggests that vitamin supplements may reduce the risk
of colon and breast cancer.
The new recommendation is part of a gradual but ongoing attitude
shift in conventional medicine concerning the value of
nutritional supplements. For many years, the prevailing
opinion among most doctors was that vitamin supplements are
unnecessary because the typical American diet provides all of
the nutrients necessary to maintain good health.
However, as the Harvard researchers point out, that opinion is
no longer defensible.
The observation that vitamin supplementation can prevent several
common chronic diseases indicates that the average American diet
does not provide optimal amounts of some
nutrients. Subtle vitamin deficiencies can result from excessive
consumption of nutrient-depleted foods such as refined sugar and
white flour, from inadequate intake of vitamin-rich fruits and
vegetables, and from nutrient losses due to processing,
prolonged heating, or storage of foods.
While vitamin supplementation can correct certain deficiencies,
it is not an adequate substitute for a good diet. That is
because whole, unprocessed foods contain a wide array of
beneficial substances besides vitamins, such as carotenoids,
flavonoids,
natural antioxidants, and other unidentified compounds. As one
researcher recently suggested, the best approach to disease
prevention is to eat properly and to take a multivitamin.
The authors of the new report point out that most multivitamins
contain iron; supplementation with this mineral may be
inadvisable for many men, non-menstruating women, and a
small proportion of the population with an inherited intolerance
to iron (hemochromatosis). Therefore, individuals who are taking
a multivitamin should discuss with their doctor whether it is
appropriate to include iron in their supplement.
The publication of this new report is an encouraging sign that
conventional medicine is finally taking a more serious look at
the role played by nutrition in the prevention and treatment of
illness.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
The two girls came over and gave Mae a big
hug. They were thankful for the encouragement. "We
might call you back to work with us once in a
while. Not only have you solved our problem with
that man, you have given us much more love and
encouragement. We will try the harder to come to
that point where we believe. Thank you."
"Each day as you meditate you will come
closer. Each day you are telling Universal
Intelligence you mean business. Each day you rely
just a little less on the old ways and explore more
the new ways. Continue" said Mae. "I must
return now to my friend."
They said their good byes and Mae was off.
Instantly she arrived back with Susan and
Tlang.
They had made their way some considerable
distance from the point where Mae had left them.
It was not so much from a fast pace and determination
than it was just a steady pace. There had been lots
of time for Tlang to look around, and see the world
through the eyes of a six year old, but they kept at
it, not stopping.
When Mae arrived back she surprised Tlang.
"How do you do that?"
"One day I will tell you my loved one. And,
one day I will take you with me so you can see.
How would that be?"
"That would be great" came the youthful
enthusiastic answer.
Mae knew she would likely take Tlang back home
to her village in South America for a visit. She
would talk it over with Susan.
They continued to walk while looking for a
suitable place to stop for the night. It had been
a long day for all of them.
Soon they found a nice spot, obviously used by
many travellers over the years, for the grass had
been worn right away. The spot was under an very
large banyan tree. It had several branches
stretched out for yards, with the accompanying
roots that dropped down to support them.
The banyan is an interesting tree. Some in the
world have grown to cover a city block. The
branches of the tree reach out, and when the tree
says that is enough weight to support, the branch
drops down another branch from it, to the ground
where it takes up root and finally and firmly
supports the branch. From that time on the branch
continues to grow until the tree decides it needs
another support. It is an amazing process and a
very smart tree.
This one was huge. It was large enough and
spread out enough to accomodate many travellers.
Tonight there were about three groups.
The girls settled in and Susan manifested the
evening meal for them. They did not want to set up
a fire while under the tree. Neither had any of
the other groups.
Mae had manifested three grass mats for them
to spread out on the dirt. There they sat, ate,
talked and finally slept. Mae filled in Susan
about the affair at Shing Li's and Psong's, and
Susan filled Mae in with the events of the day for
Tlang and her.
"What do you say we go to my village for a day
or so, take Tlang on a journey?"
"That would be good. She would like that and I
haven't seen Eloise and Mazunta for a long time. I
wonder how they are making out. "Just fine, thanks
Susan" came the answer. Susan smiled.
The next morning they were awakened by
movement and noise from some of the other camps.
Upon rising they decided it must be around six, as
the sun was just coming up over the horizon. That
would mean it was suppertime at the village in
South America.
"Tlang, we thought we would like to travel
home to the place where I live. Susan has been
there many times and has many friends there. We
have not been there for many months and thought we
should drop in to say hi to the folks. Would you
like to come with us?" Mae knew the answer but was
preparing the child.
"Yes, if I can. I do not know how to go like
you do." Tlang was a child who thought about such
things.
"Don't you worry about that. Susan and I will
take you. All will be well. You can meet my
grandchildren and many other children. They will
all look different than you but they are all nice
kids. This place is far away. They will be having
supper there now, or maybe just finished. If I
know my village they will be having a big fire
tonight where everyone in the village comes. You
will like it."
"Okay"

A scientist gets on a train to go to New York. His cabin also
has a poor farmer in it. To pass the time the scientist decides
to play a game with the guy.
"I will ask you a question and if you get it wrong, you have to
pay me 1 dollar. Then you ask me a question, and if I get it
wrong, you get 10 dollars. You ask me a question first." The
farmer thinks for a while.
"I know. What has three legs, takes 10 hours to climb up a
palm tree, and 10 seconds to get back down?"
The scientist is confused and thinks long and hard about the
question. Finally, the train ride is coming to an end. As it pulls
into the station, the scientist takes out 10 dollars and gives it
to the farmer.
"I don't know. What has 3 legs, takes 10 hours to get up a
palm tree and 10 seconds to get back down?"
The farmer takes the 10 dollars and puts it into his pocket.
He then takes out 1 dollar and hands it to the scientist.
"I don't know."
