TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

What exactly are stem cells and why are they so important?
What is cryptozoology?
Have there been any cases of animals that were believed to
be fictional that actually turned out to be real?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What was the purpose of the experiment then?
The scientists said their goal was to produce a plentiful
source of embryonic stem cells for medical research. The
embryos grew for only a few days before the researchers
destroyed them to retrieve the stem cells. The reason rabbits
were involved at all was to provide a plentiful source of eggs.
The embryos were mostly human, with DNA taken from
human skin tissue. But while skin tissue is easy to obtain,
human eggs are more difficult. The human cells were fused
with rabbit eggs from which MOST of the rabbit DNA had
been removed.
Could a rabbit/human embryo really grow into a viable fetus?
It's doubtful. Experiments with other species suggest it would not.

US Buys into Online Shopping
August 05, 2004
Researching and buying products online is becoming
ever more popular among US adults.
The Dieringer Research Group (DRG) surveyed 3,000 US
adults in June to ascertain their online shopping habits.
DRG concludes that growth in consumer confidence and
of the economy in general has resulted in a majority of US
adults using the Internet for shopping. Additionally, online
product research, even for products not necessarily
eventually purchased online, is becoming increasingly
popular. DRG finds exactly 114.1 million adults have
conducted product research online.
DRG determined that almost as many US adults research
products online before purchasing as those who do the
same from mail order catalogs, direct mail and telemarketing
combined. Online research decisively trails all offline research,
which includes the methods above as well as activities like
in-store research or research in periodicals.
Interestingly, about 60% of respondents said that their
opinions of brands have changed as a result of online
research. But online research, as well as online shopping,
have other benefits, as an Ipsos-Reid/Jupiter Research study
conducted during the 2003 holiday season shows. US
consumers who buy online can point to a variety of reasons
why shopping on the Net is superior to other forms, including
better time management, avoiding crowds, better prices and
easier product searching.
---------------DIRECT EXCERPT FROM Just An Online Minute
by MediaPost----------
For days that turned into weeks and then months, Wall
Street, the media, and tech pundits have drooled over
Google's impending IPO. Google is hoping to raise about
$3 billion through the IPO which could happen next
Wednesday, at least that's what I'm reading.
The bankers backing the IPO should make out well --
estimates range from $50 million to $100 million. You
can almost hear them salivating. Ka-ching. There hasn't
been a transaction this rich in a while. On the other hand,
there are 28 investment banks involved.
Meanwhile, there were storm clouds hovering as Reuters
reported that Google may have illegally issued shares worth
as much as $3.1 billion to current and former employees
and consultants, and then offered to buy them back for a
fraction of that amount. Apparently, Google hadn't registered
these transactions with the SEC as required by law. The trouble
was disclosed yesterday in a filing with the Securities and
Exchange Commission. It's not known how, or whether this
might affect the planned IPO.
The SEC filing indicated that Google offered to buy back as
many as 28.8 million pre-IPO shares of stock or options for
$25.9 million.
There's nothing conventional about Google's IPO. You can
almost hear the strains of Sinatra's "My Way" echoing all
the way from the company's Mountain View, Calif., campus
to Wall Street, Washington, and Main Street. The Dutch
auction-style bidding process is designed to allow "ordinary"
investors to get in on the action without being squeezed out
by large, institutional investors. And it's Google, not the
bankers, that will retain control over when its employees
can sell their shares. Normally, banks require shares to be
held for at least six months to assess the deal; Google will
allow employees to flip their shares just two weeks after
the IPO.
That's all folks!

GET RID OF EXTRA ICONS!
Not everybody wants a bunch of icons on their pretty desktop.
If that's you, the icons are easy to dump.
I like to run shortcut icons in the Quick Launch bar, next to the
Start button. To do so, click the shortcuts on the desktop (they have
little arrows on them) and drag them to the Quick Launch bar. If the
Quick Launch bar isn't visible in Windows XP, right click the taskbar
and select Properties. On the Taskbar tab, place a check mark next
to Show Quick Launch. The original shortcuts can then be deleted.
Just right-click and select Delete.

What Is Health? What Is Wellness?
Some Concepts To Consider
PART 2 of 5
For most people, health and wellness is a physical AND mental
state. It is the overall feeling of fitness: of having all your
body systems performing the way they are meant to: without pain
or discomfort: and a desire to conquer your own world! Just lots
of energy and confidence! A very quick and informal biology
lesson: some of the major nutrients that your body requires are
proteins, carbohydrates, fats as amino fatty acids, vitamins,
minerals, and water. In order to function efficiently, these are
required on a regular basis and in the specific amounts.
Nutrients are digested as they start in your mouth, and absorbed
through the digestive wall of your stomach and intestines. They
are then transported via your blood stream to the individual
cells in your body. Your cells use them to maintain and rebuild
body tissue. They also perform all the necessary body functions.
As well they are needed to activate, regulate, and control many
of the functions that take place in your body. But if one system
runs out because of increased needs, it will borrow from another
system. And that borrowing will continue till your body is
depleted.
One of these important functions is to maintain your body's
natural defense mechanism: the immune system. This is your
GREATEST ALLY against disease! This defense system helps your
body resist infection, and any unwanted intruders. It is very
dependent on good and adequate nutrition! Unless your eat a
variety of foods, you may not be getting all the nutrients you
need. Also the need for some nutrients can be increased or
modified when the body is stressed: i.e. surgery, infections,
short and long term illnesses, etc.
Under normal conditions, each cell in your body develops in a
very orderly fashion. Your body is made up of millions of cells,
that are organised into organs and then into systems. Very
simply, when old cells wear out, new cells replace them. Your
body totally depends on what you feed it. No two people require
the same amount of energy though they might be the same size,
gender, and age. Instead, there is a wide range of energy
"intakes" that can be considered adequate. Conversely, all our
main organs such as the heart, brain, lungs, liver, spleen, etc.
are relatively the same size. So if you are providing "optimum
amounts" of nutrients, chances are these will be adequate.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

The village took up different seating
positions than was their usual. The size of the
visiting group was that large the villagers all
sat from the middle of the fire toward the bottom
of the circle. The villagers had a deep and
abiding love for the Henrys and the Strikers. They
gave up their positions not with a grudging ego
driven grump, but with a joy spawned by that love
and regard for their guests. This village always
did place themselves beneath these visitors. They
were actually practicing the law, "He who places
himself first shall come last."
The fire started with Tlang sitting on
Eloise's knee. Mae Eloise was with Grandma and
Grandpa. The love that could be felt in the air
was magnetic and heavy. It fell upon the villagers
with a welcome acceptance. The villagers were well
used to this feeling. They received it often from
those who lived in the village, Boolanga, Eloise,
Mazunta, David, Pam, Mae.
What a celebration it was. There was the usual
dancing, eating, drinking and visiting amongst
all. It was a continual movement of bodies as they
each shifted to come and speak with the visiting
friends.
Tlang could also feel the love. She was more
fulfilled than she had felt for a very long time.
She was talking with Eloise for a large part of the night.
She never questioned how or why these people could
understand her. There were a few with whom she
spoke she did not understand nor did they understand
her. But there were many with whom she could
communicate. She was especially drawn to Ben
Striker. About half way through the evening Tlang
went over to Ben and sat on his lap. He put his
arms around her and there she stayed for the rest
of the night.
Ben might be thought of as the gentle giant.
He was a big man with a gentle heart and a
magnetic personality. All were drawn to him. Tlang
snuggled in like Ben were her father.
The fire lasted well into the night as
expected. Even well into the morning the
participants did not want to bring this evening to
an end. But eventually tiredness caught up to
their bodies.
It was late in the day before there was much
stirring in the village. Tlang slept with Ben and
Helen Striker, a surprise to Mae and Susan.
It was good, and she was broadening her
experiences.
The Henry boys and Billy Hendricks were now
adult and teated as such by the villagers. They
were welcome in all adult conversations. The boys
appreciated this. It symbolized, to them at least,
almost a rite of passage, to be welcomed as an
adult.
The sun was up and hot by the time the village
stirred. Many of the youngsters were already down
on the beach involved heavily in their daily game
of ball, but the adults moved a little slower, as
you might expect.
It was near noon when David went around to see
Eloise and Mazunta and the Henrys and Strikers to
ask them over for a warm lunch with them. They all
agreed to come.
The meal was a meat dish with raw vegetables
from the jungle. It was filling and nourishing
unlike most meals those from Pinehill were used to.
"Oh! Hello Midnight!" Sam was pleased as
Midnight rubbed herself up against him.
Tlang hung on to Ben when she saw the cat. She
knew from home that a cat this big was a danger.
"Hush now little one. This cat is a friend. You
must treat her like a friend. She will not hurt
you. She is a long time pet in this village and
she will treat you like a friend."
Tlang relaxed a little but the test was about
to happen. Midnight was on her way over to Ben and
Tlang. Tlang hung on to Ben's hand, hard. Then
Midnight was there. She rubbed up against Ben and
purred. Ben took Tlang's little hand and wanted to
place it on Midnight's head and pet it. Tlang was
holding back. Ben sent her thoughts, "Fear not
Tlang for this cat loves all in this village, you
too. Just pet her once and you will see."
Tlang permitted Ben to take her hand to the
cat. Midnight rubbed up against it. She well
understood what was happening. She had gone
through this many times, even with adults.
After Tlang had petted her several times, Ben
having let go of her hand, Midnight moved over to
Tlang's side and lay down. Tlang was not so sure
this aggressive move by the cat was what she
wanted. She was about to get on Ben's lap but Ben
kept reassuring her Midnight was a friend.
Eventually Tlang relented and before two hours was
up she was hugging Midnight.
These were all rich experiences for Tlang.
They would form wonderful memories for the rest of
her life. However, this would not be the last time
she would be here. So long as she was with Mae and
Susan she would be coming back often.

TODAY'S REPORT:
To become nominated by a political party so one can be
the candidate to run in an election, one needs voters to
come and vote for him so he can win the nomination. To
do that one has to sell memberships in his political party
to residents within his constituency. There is where the
work lies. Selling memberships isn't so hard but one must
get the vote and to do that the new member must show
up on nomination evening. That is the hard part, finding
those who will commit to come out and vote.
