What were "night-soil men"?
If you hate your job, just be thankful it isn't worse. Back in
the Middle Ages, those employed as "night-soil men" had
to go from house to house to collect and empty dirty
chamber pots - those that hadn't been illegally emptied
out of windows!
Are Istanbul and Constantinople the same place?
They are. The largest city in Turkey, Istanbul USED to be
called Constantinople. The name was changed after the
Ottomans conquered the city and made it the capital of
the Ottoman Empire.

Around The Net!
Here is an excerpt from eMarketer Daily for August 3/04. It
speaks of more changes coming that will have an effect on
all of us. It is neither good or bad, just a new way of doing
things that appears to have the potential of taking over
the methods we use today for paying for things.
----------EXCERPT FROM eMARKETER DAILY
Will Micropayments Make It Big?
August 03, 2004
Micropayment revenues will increase by a compound
annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23% from 2003 to 2009,
according to TowerGroup.
Micropayments are transactions that involve small
amounts of money, sometimes just a few cents(TowerGroup
defines micropayments as transactions under $5.00). They
are practical for the purchase of digital content, as opposed
to actual physical products that would then be processed
and shipped, because of the need to keep costs down for
purchases of only a few dollars or a few cents. A number
of methods have been developed to process micropayments,
including compiling the charges in a monthly bill (as is the
case for many mobile phone micropayments), aggregating
the charges into one charge, pre-paid accounts and directly
subtracting the charges from a user's bank account.
While technological advances have encouraged the growth
of micropayments, the major change is the rise of popular
products that require micropayments. iTunes and other online
music services that charge about $1.00 per song rely on
micropayment systems, as do the increasing number of news
sites selling archived articles. Mobile phones are also a big
micropayment market, with users downloading ringtones
and games.
TowerGroup expects the micropayment market to experience
excellent growth, rising from $2.0 billion in revenues in 2003
to $11.5 billion by 2009.
The bulk of micropayment revenues comes from Internet
transactions as opposed to mobile phone micropayments.
Currently, subscription-based payment models dominate
the Internet landscape, allowing users to procure online
content by paying a fee every month, but by the end of the
decade, micropayments should compete with
subscription-based services

Hypertension, Menieres, And Stress:
A Different Way Of Thinking
PART 1 of 4
I had a very interesting and thought-provoking request
a little while ago. The gentleman (I will call him
Bill) had gone to his doctor with Menieres symptoms.
In the course of the conversation, it became apparent
that he was under some stress and his blood pressure
was a bit elevated. He left with a prescription for an
antihypertensive drug and the understanding that there
was nothing much to be done with his Menieres
symptoms. As well, a relative had Menieres. So it was
also alluded to that this condition was probably
hereditary. Bill did receive what I perceive to be the
traditional medical treatment. His doctor was obviously
trying to prevent possible cardiac problems. As usual,
and specifically in this case, I am going to ask you
not to use this information except for your own
learning and thinking. Please do not diagnose yourself.
what I am proposing is a different set of questions to
ask. That might be a bit contrary to what you normally
do. This is thinking outside traditional or routine
box. This is also NOT meant to offend any health care
professional. I simply want you to challenge your
thinking: to rely on your own powers of deduction and
observation. In fact I want to turn this whole idea
upside down.
Lets discuss Hypertension, Menieres, and Stress
individually and then as a combination or related
group. I am using a regular medically-acceptable site
called Medline.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/mplusdictionary.html
If you dont already use it, I would urge you to do so
for your own research when you need some
easy-to-understand descriptions. The encyclopedia
section is the best area for this purpose.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Ben rose to a standing position. "Boy these
old legs aren't used to sitting like that for too
long. They get all cramped up and knotted. I'll
have to practice that more often if I am going to
come down here much. I think I'll go for a walk."
He paraphrased the thinking that was in nearly
everyone's mind. They had been sitting there for
well over an hour and for those who were not used
to sitting in that camp fire position it was hard
on the legs until the body got used to it.
"That's a good idea, Ben. I'll join you"
responded Sam.
The rest of the group rose as if they were
one. They stretched, kicked out their legs to help
get the circulation back, and agreed to join the
two men.
They walked down to the beach where the game
of ball was still going on. They were walking
rather aimlessly, having no particular mission in
mind. One or two of the men kicked the ball
whenever it came near them, to the cheers of the
kids in the game.
The view from here was always spectacular.
Even Tlang, as a child, was impressed. The warmth
of the day, the clear skies, the flowing water of
this very large river, the lush green vegetation
and the sounds of the birds and animals all
combined to make this a memorable sight.
It was as if one was back in the Garden of
Eden. There was abundance and cohabitation
everywhere. The people here respected the jungle.
They respected the animals, the birds, the land
and the water. All lived together in an easy
natural way. None hunted for anything more than
the food required to survive. Where possible the
villagers preferred to eat fruits and vegetables.
Meat was not nearly as much a part of their diet
as it was for North American folks.
Tlang was surprised at the size of the river.
She has seen nothing like it in her short life.
She stood on the bank and looked up and down the
river for as far as she could see. Even she could
tell the river was deep and carried huge volumes
of water. She bent down to put her hands in the
water and splash a little. Like all water it was
cold.
Standing, she looked at Mae, "Big river. I
have not seen a river this big."
"This is one of the world's largest and
longest rivers Tlang. It is called the Amazon and
it flows for thousands of miles. From here the
headwaters are about 1500 miles that way, up
river, and it flows for another 2500 miles or more
that way before it empties into the ocean. Do you
know what an ocean is?"
"No?"
"It is a very large body of water that covers
much of the earth's surface. You can see for miles
in all directions and all you can see is water.
One day I will take you to see an ocean. You will
like it" said Mae, tickled with the inquisitive
mind of a six year old.
New experiences were rapidly taking over old
thoughts in Tlang's mind. The new things were so
interesting that she, like all children, forgot
about her past and was thoroughly engrossed in her
present. That is not to say that she would truly
forget about her past. It is only to say she
healthily took the approach most children do and
became involved with the present.
"What do you say we go home and carry on with
our journey Tlang. Susan and I like your country
very much and there is much to see there too. I
think it is time we returned. What do you think?"
"That's okay, Miss Mae, but I like it here.
This is a nice place and the people are so nice."
"These are a fine and wonderful people Tlang.
You are right and this is a beautiful place, but
you know, we find wonderful people in your country
too. And there are all sorts of beautiful places
in your country. All you have to do is open your
eyes to beauty and you shall find it in the most
terrible of places. It is a mind set Tlang. Beauty
is everywhere. All you have to do is make up your
mind to appreciate where you are at any given
moment. The earth is the same all over, people are
the same all over and no conditions are different
except on a temporary scale.
Mae rose from the crouching position she held
while speaking with Tlang. "I think it is time for
us to resume our journey. Susan, Tlang and I will
take our leave. It has been wonderful being with
you all again and I'm sure we will do the same
again. Be happy, and come see us in China
sometime. You will enjoy it."
Mae was speaking to the group, preparing for
her departure. They all agreed to come visit them
in China, said their good byes with kisses and
hugs and let them go.
Ben knelt down to take Tlang in his arms. He
was a giant of a man and dwarfed her in his arms.
Tlang tried to hug him but couldn't get her arms
around him. There was a real and genuine love
between them, one that did not bring back any bad
memories to Tlang, about men.

thing is over. Next Tuesday is the day. At the moment things
are looking pretty good for my friend, but the competition

Thank you to those of you who wrote telling me your thoughts
on my contemplated change in the publishing schedule for
thePEBBLE. I appreciate your thoughts. I would like to hear
from more of you so please take the time to write me. The
discussion is about dropping the publication schedule to
five days a week, Monday to Friday, rather than the current
seven days a week. I have been putting thePEBBLE out for
five years in its present format, daily. Other work has from time
to time made that a near impossible task, yet thePEBBLE
has gone out. I'm thinking about the change just to give me
a break. I would like to hear your thoughts so please
write. Thanks.
