Where is Byzantium?
Same place as Istanbul and Constantinople. Byzantium
is an even earlier name of the same city.
Is the ottoman seat named after the Ottomans?
The ottoman, an upholstered seat, is in fact named after
the Ottomans. It was actually first created in Europe, not
the Middle East, however. It got its name because it was
inspired by the upholstered benches, covered with pillows,
popular in the Ottoman Empire.

TITLE ARTICLE - - -
-----------------
Do You See Straight?
by Ken Darby
A man named Mr. Smith was flying from San Francisco
to LA. Unexpectedly, the plane stopped in Sacramento
along the way. The flight attendant explained that
there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted
to get off the aircraft, the plane would re-board in
30 minutes.
Everybody got off the plane except one gentleman who
was blind. Mr. Smith had noticed him as he walked by
and could tell the blind man had flown before because
his Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in
front of him throughout the entire flight. Mr. Smith
could also tell he had flown this very flight before
because the pilot approached him, and calling him by
name, said "Keith, we're in Sacramento for almost an
hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?"
Keith replied, "No thanks, but maybe the dog would
like to stretch his legs."
Picture this: All the people in the gate area came
to a complete quiet standstill when they looked up and
saw the pilot walk off the plane with the Seeing Eye
dog! The pilot was even wearing sunglasses.
People scattered. They not only tried to change
planes, they were trying to change airlines!
Can you imagine being in that waiting area when that
pilot came up the gangway? Wow! what a sight that
would be.
You know what happens when one is in a condition like
that? Panic begins to set in. You might not think much of
it at first, but someone will panic, without reason, then
someone else thinks it "might be wise to play it safe", and
then someone else takes the same action and before you
know it there is an "electricity" that fills the air. That "electricity"
is panic. It affects everyone and spreads through the crowd
like fire. The next thing you know each person is
experiencing fear, all because a pilot was kind enough
to take a dog for a walk.
What happens is people don't do their own thinking.
Someone responds to what they think they see, and
without thinking it through, or without being reasonable they
react to what they "think they saw". Their actions affect those
close to them and the first thing you know you have a panic
on your hands.
Completely unreasonable and no thought given to the matter
at all, but then panic is never reasonable. It can kill, however.
And it can cause any individual to respond in ways their own
clear thinking would ordinarily not permit.
Now, this is a public situation of "not seeing straight". How
about the private ones where only you interpret
circumstances? They can be just as harmful to you. How
many times, for example, do you see a condition as failure
when, with one more step, you can walk into the brilliant
sunshine of success? How many times do you experience
fear when, in truth, there is nothing to fear? How many times
do you fail in a single act because you are suddenly faced
with something you have never been faced with before and
you are afraid to make a decision?
All these are examples of "not seeing straight". They are
places where, in the calm of your mind you can see the
truth of a situation, but in the "consciousness" of your
mind you respond in ways you wish you wouldn't. These
reactions can cost you money, time, love, relationships
and success. Think on these things.

COMPUTER TIPS - - -
-------------------------
8 Things to Know When Buying
a New Computer
Now is a good time to get a computer. They're cheap because
demand is relatively low. Here's what you need to look at:
Microprocessor-- You should easily find an Intel Pentium 4 2.0
gigahertz chip (or the AMD 2000+) in a cheap machine.
That's what passes for the low end these days. If you're
running business applications and surfing the Web, a
2.0 chip will be fine.
If you're doing lots of photo manipulation or playing high-end games,
move up to an Intel Pentium 4 2.6 GHz or AMD 2600+. This type of
computing requires more power.
As for Apple, the low-end eMac runs at 700 megahertz. Apple claims that
because of the way the chip works, the 700 MHz unit is approximately
equal to a PC chip running twice as fast. An eMac should handle
business software and surfing with aplomb. If you need something
faster, Apple offers the Power Macs, which have dual microprocessors.
Those chips run as fast as 1.25 GHz. You will probably find the low-end
Power Mac sufficient. Those run at 867 MHz.
Video chips--These days, video often runs on the system memory.
You don't necessarily need a separate video card with its own memory.
Business applications and surfing won't stress your machine and
don't require a separate card. But if you're a hard-core gamer or
doing any home video editing, equip your computer with a video card.
It should have a minimum of 64 MB of DDR SDRAM. Even better, get
128 MB.
Hard Drive--Most low-end machines have 40 GB drives. That's more
than enough for most people.
RAM--You need 256 MB of RAM. If you want to be on the supersafe
side, get 512 MB. Manufacturers often offer a free upgrade to 512 MB as
an inducement to buy. You don't need that much today, but you might in
the future.
Operating System--You don't have much choice here. You'll get what
they give you, which is Windows XP or OS X in the Mac.
Monitor--Here's a good place to invest some money. Minimum, you want
a 17-inch CRT (the kind that are about 20 inches deep) or a 15-inch
flat panel. Nineteen-inch CRT monitors are common and inexpensive.
Those big screens are nice.
CD or DVD Burner--The capability to make CDs or DVDs is very handy,
whether you're backing up data or making music. CD-RWs are inexpensive
and well suited for music; DVD burners can put much more data on a
disk. That could be important for backups.
Warranty--Computers are relatively easy to fix. If you're handy, get
a one-year warranty. Otherwise, if you're buying a PC, get a three-year
guarantee. Apple offers a one-year warranty only.
You should be able to get an excellent low-end PC or eMac for about
$1,000. The eMac comes standard with 128 MB of RAM, so you'll want to
double that. If you need something earth-shaking, a PC should run you
less than $2,000. You may do much better if you watch the sales.
Apple's Power Macs start at $1,699.

Hypertension, Menieres, And Stress:
A Different Way Of Thinking
PART 2 of 4
Hypertension
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000468.
htm
Hypertension is recognized when the top number in a
blood pressure reading is 140 (systolic) and higher
and the bottom number is 90 and higher (diastolic).
That is considered high blood pressure: hypertension
in medical terminology. Nowadays some doctors feel
normal blood pressure should be lower than that and
many doctors feel a drug to prevent higher pressure
from developing, is in order. Some doctors try to find
the underlying causes: many give prescriptions more
readily. Your doctor may recommend and encourage
lifestyle changes including weight loss, exercise, and
nutritional changes, especially a reduction in the use
of salt. Salt is seen as retaining fluids and is
suspect as a possible contributor to hypertension. Here
is an article that gives you more information about
hypertension. Usually, high blood pressure has no
symptoms at all, but in my experience, many people have
tinnitus or ringing in the ear at higher levels.
Menieres is not a household name
that is until it
visits and resides in your home! In order to understand
and appreciate Menieres, you have to know the classic
symptoms. They include tinnitus, pressure in your ear,
vertigo and or dizziness, and hearing fluctuation.
Menieres is also involved in some controversy as to
its name(s) and treatments. So I will stay with the
traditional mainstream symptoms and suggested
treatment.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
Mae, Susan and Tlang arrived back at the very
same spot, under the banyan tree, from which they
left a couple days earlier. It had rained and the
surrounding countryside was wet, offering up that
sweet clean smell that often follows a rain.
The roads were near impassable so travelers
were sitting by the side of the road here and
there to wait for the roads to dry.
The ladies decided not to wait. There was
still a lot of the day left and by setting up
their own "envelope" of dryness around them they
could still make some distance today.
Mae tended to that and Susan and Tlang
followed.
"How did you do that?"
"Tlang, all I see is dry land where I am
walking. I believe it to be so and it is. You will
notice that after we pass the road returns to the
state it was before" answered Mae.
"Why can't others do that?"
"Ahh! But they can. Men do not pay attention
to the voices within them. Even you as a child are
told things from within. You must listen to those
voices. Your Maker, within, wants only the best
and most prosperous for you and has equipped you
to have that. It is only in man's failure to see
that and to see through the veil of simplicity
that causes him to suffer the conditions he calls
reality. And, of course, his reality is very real
to him, even though it is an illusion he creates.
As time goes by we will show you."
They were traveling up a hill, not knowing
what was on the other side. Giving no thought to
the matter they assumed the other side of the hill
would be much the same as the one on which they
were travelling. There was no reason to think
otherwise, and they were right.
Except, when they reached the top they were
greeted with a view that nearly took their breath
away. It was a view of beautiful scenery that one
only sees in magazines. Looking out over the land
there were mountains and high hills far in the
distance. More immediate was a river that ran
across in front of them, swollen from the recent
rains. The trees were lush green and the grasses
were nearly hip high in lush growth. Flowers made
themselves visible here and there. Nestled quietly
amongst all this beauty was a little village, off
to the right of the scene. The road led to that
village.
A type of ferry could be seen crossing the
river. It was not modern, but a barge type of
thing attached to ropes that spanned the river.
Oxen on each side pulled the barge across while a
taught guy wire helped keep it from breaking loose
and drifting down stream.
The sight was such it nearly mesmerized the
beholder. It was beautiful.
The ladies continued their walk, only more
slowly now, for they wanted to "absorb" the beauty
of this place. The road at the top of the hill was
much dryer than in the lower spots.
Suddenly Tlang grabbed Susan's leg and hung on
for dear life.
"Tlang, what is it?"
There had been a traveller coming up the hill
as they were going down. Tlang had recognized him
as one of the men in the restaurant where she had
been kept.
He looked at her and began to come over to
them.
"Hey! You! You do not belong here. You come
with me. I'll take you home."
Tlang cowered behind Susan.
"She will remain with us." Mae was calm and
authoritative.
"She will not. She belongs back in the
restaurant where she can work for her food and for
being saved." The man was becoming threatening.
Mae calmly stood her ground. "Halt! You have
no business with this girl. You are one of the
ones who have violated her and you can see how
frightened she is of you. Do you like instilling
terror in little girls? Are you so mean, corrupt
and selfish that you would take the life of an
innocent six year old and destroy it?"
"Ha! Innocent? She'll show you tricks lady
that even you don't know." The man was beligerant
and becoming forceful in his tone. He had not yet
reached the women.
Tlang was holding Susan's leg so hard she was
cutting off the circulation. "Keep calm Tlang. He
will not harm you." Susan broadcast love to her
trying to calm her down.
The man was not a tall man but he was a fat
man, round in body and face. He was also sweaty
and greasy looking, unkempt for days. Mae thought
he had not likely had a bath for many months.

TODAY'S REPORT:
Well, the political campaign has come to a slower pace. The
sale of memberships has come to a close and now the job of
phoning is underway. The object of this job is to get as many
of the sold memberships as possible out to vote. So we'll work
hard on that. Otherwise its a question of paying your nickel
and taking your chances. Tuesday next is the nomination
night so I could be telling you a very happy story the next
day, or a very sad one. We'll see.

Words Women Use
THAT'S OKAY
This is one of the most dangerous statements that a ! woman can

-----------------------
Noticing a man who appeared to be really drunk, a few of the
guys at the bar decided to be good Samaritans and help him
get home. They picked him up off the floor and dragged him
out the door. The poor guy fell down three times on the way
to the car. Finding his house, they helped him out of the car
and he fell down four more times on the way to his front
door. The helpful fellows rang the doorbell and the man's wife
came to the door. One said, "Here's your husband! We got
him home safe and sound!"
The man's wife gave the group a shocked look. "But where
in the world is his wheelchair?"
