TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

When did psychiatrists get the label "shrink"?

What plant exists in more than nine thousand species?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How in the world do you shrink a head?

We won't get TOO much into the gory details, but the basic
process involved removing the head from the body, removing
the skull from the skin around it, and then boiling the skin in
water and leaving it to dry. Afterwards, rocks were placed inside
the skin, it was sewn shut, and the head was shrunken further
with additional applications of intense heat. Do NOT try
this at home!

Are the shrunken heads you see in museums and antique
shops the real thing?

Not always. While there are some real shrunken human heads
out there, there are many more counterfeits, made from animal
heads or animal skins.

Internet Users: A Day in the Life, Part 1

August 13, 2004

The Internet has successfully been incorporated into almost
everyone's daily lives in the US, reports The Pew Internet &
American Life Project.

Pew bases its study, "The Internet and Daily Life," released
yesterday, on surveys conducted with 2,013 US adults between
November and December 2003. Pew finds 92% of respondents
qualify the Internet as a good place to get everyday information.
What's more:

* Exactly 85% of respondents say the Internet is a good way
to communicate or interact with others
* Further, 75% say the Internet is a good place to conduct
everyday transations
* Finally, 69% think the Internet is a good entertainment
resource in everyday life

As for specific examples of the types of everyday activities adults
are conducting online, Pew found that a vast majority of people
who conduct the following activities in general are doing so
online: get directions, check weather reports and sports scores,
buy local entertainment tickets and check the news.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Hypertension, Meniere’s, And Stress:
A Different Way Of Thinking
PART 4 of 4

What part of the body gives you that symptom? This all
has to do the balance nerve. And this nerve is situated
in the inner ear and is located close to the hearing
nerve, also in the inner ear. Let’s look at hearing
fluctuation. What would give you any symptoms? Anything
that irritates, disturbs, or influences that (hearing)
nerve. (That may also go for the balance nerve, but not
necessarily.) Do you think any of this might give you
additional stress? Is there anything you can do about
the symptoms so you don’t get them and have to deal
with these unpleasant feelings? Do you think that any
two nerves that are so close together might also be
disturbed by the same thing? I also would like to
encourage you to search for more conditions or things
that might possibly contribute to having these
symptoms. Did you know that some dental work or sinus
conditions can make you dizzy and also create a lot of
pressure? Did you realise that if your ear was already
sensitive, any vibrations such as using an electric
toothbrush could set off similar symptoms? Or
artificial sweeteners? Or exposure to mold and other
possible toxins such as time-release fertilizers?

Many drugs list tinnitus or dizziness as a side effect.
And here is a huge potential “problem” creator…amalgam
fillings. They are the mercury or silver ones.

So my final question might be…then how could a drug for
high blood pressure help out these symptoms? Just
asking….could there be another way of tackling Bill’s
problems? Ops!  That was another question. But my point
is this. Could there be another reason for Bill’s
elevated blood pressure? Could there be another way of
looking at this problem? Things are often not what they
first appear to be. Just as I am finishing this article
I spoke with a lady who had asked me to check out a
drug her doctor prescribed. She was suffering from
dizziness and vertigo and tinnitus. Guess what the side
effects of the drug were. Many of these chemicals don’t
belong to your body “naturally”. Could it be that your
body is reacting to them? The term “side effect” is
there for a reason. To get a good sampling of
information, you may want to do your own research by
checking out several sites and while you are in each
one, see who the sponsors are.  Can you now see a
connection with hypertension, Meniere’s and stress?

If anyone of these conditions is a part of your life,
take control by asking questions that are not the
normal, expected ones. Ask yourself how all this ties
together. Your answers will always come as long as you
persevere in your search. It is your body. No one can
ever describe how dizziness and tinnitus affect you. It
is a very personal and stressful “always on guard”
lifestyle. Could it possibly elevate your blood
pressure? Probably. Are their possible solutions? Only
you will find that answer, but it won’t come about
until you start your search and then it may take time.
Is it worth it? From the comments I receive, it is the
only thing to do.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------

"I will love everything Miss Mae. I want to be
like you and Miss Susan. I want to be like those
people at your village. I like them, especially
Mr. Ben."

"He is a wonderful man, Tlang. He has a kind
and loving heart and will only do things to help
you" responded Mae. "Let's carry on. I'd like to
see what that little village is like down there.
Are you all right now?"

"Yes. I'm fine" said Tlang, looking back. She
could still see the man standing in the same
position in which they left him. "Will he be
okay?"

"Yes Tlang. He will be fine. He will become a
much better man from now on. You never know he
might even become a friend. He will certainly have
the motivation to be a nice man."

The three of them were once again walking. The
sight before them soon made them forget about the
incident just past. Happiness was restored and
Tlang was once more the inquisitive six year old.

Something they did not know, however, was that
they were being followed.

The man who owned the restaurant where Tlang
had been hidden, had hired a couple of his cronies
to follow Tlang and bring her back.

By talking with travellers on the road they
were able to ascertain the direction the three
were going, and set out after them.

The group was not hard to follow. There were
no other foreigners in the area and they stood out
immediately. Every traveller on the road knew of
them.

The pursuers lost track of them for a while
when they arrived at the banyan tree, so they
started back, thinking the ladies might have
backtracked.

That cost them about four days and confused
them completely. Finally they decided to go again
to the last known sighting of the trio, at the
banyan tree. On their way they met travellers who
once more were talking to them about some
foreigners travelling with a little girl.

Encouraged the thugs picked up speed. They
passed the banyan tree and met other travellers
who confirmed they were on the right trail.

Then rains came, to slow them down. The next
travellers they met told them the foreigners were
walking on the road even when it was wet. It was
strange. Somehow the road was dry for them.

Within two days they met up with their buddy.
He told them of his encounter with the foreigners.
He was still a mess, and in pain. His clothes had
been soaked in blood from his nose. "That dark
one, look out for her. She has powers. She is a
witch. She froze me in one spot, like a statue. I
couldn't move. She walked all around me and
whispered in my ear. She is an evil one."

The small group laughed at him. Who was he to
have let a woman get the best of him?

The day was late and the three of them decided
to settle in for the night. They knew that at most
they were only two, maybe three days from catching
up with Mae, Sue and Tlang. They were confident
now they were close and that the ladies knew
nothing of their presence. Surprise would be on
their side, so there was no need to rush.

That night, over a fire, the man with whom the
ladies had the confrontation told the other two
all the detail of what happened. He told them of
how he can no longer think of a woman without
having much pain. He did not know what was going
on but he was considerably dismayed. This after
all was the continual thrust in his life, up to
this point.

The other two pursuers did not believe him.
They could not think of what or how that condition
could come about. Yet they did not feel the pain.
It was not their bodies that had been affected.
They still laughed at him.

The following morning they rose early and were
again on their mission.

It was three days before they finally caught
sight of Mae, Susan and Tlang.

Mae looked at Susan. They each knew something
was up. They said nothing so as not to concern
Tlang, until they were certain of what they were
thinking.

"Susan, why don't you and Tlang carry on. I
want to go back to that neat little store we saw
in that village. I'll catch up to the pair of you
soon. Just don't walk too quickly."

"Okay Mae" said Sue, knowing what was up.
"What is it you want?"

"Oh, I just want to see what's behind us a bit
and look again at that little store." Mae was
sounding nonchalant.

"Okay, we'll keep on our way. Don't be long."

Mae rendered herself invisible and instantly
placed herself beside the three men. The two sent
from the restaurant had persuaded the other to
join them in their capturing the ladies and
bringing them back to the restaurant.
