Why did some US schools in the 1950's prohibit kids from
collecting for UNICEF on Halloween?
For decades now, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)
has distributed boxes to kids so they can collect money during
their trick or treating to help other kids. During the 1950's, however,
a few schools banned the UNICEF boxes, believing the charity
might be associated with communism. (Hey, back then,
everything was a Communist plot.)
What US town refuses to declare a date for Halloween?
Hancock, MD, will not declare a specific date for Halloween.
The reason is liability. The town fears that if a kid gets hurt on
that date during trick-or-treating, someone might try to sue the
town for damages. I believe it! (Halloween, by the way, is now
the second biggest holiday as far as US retail sales go.
Christmas is number one.)

Tips And Tidbits!
Students Cite Net Gain in
Doing Homework Online
August 20, 2004
The Internet has become the dominant tool students use to
complete their assignments, but does that result in a
better product?
SBC's study, conducted by Opinion Research Corporation,
surveyed 501 pre-teens ages 6 to 11 and 501 teens ages
12 through 17. Overall, 70% of the combined survey group
reported that Internet access aids them in succeeding in
school. Nine-tenths of the teen respondents, and
seven-tenths of the pre-teen respondents, use the Internet
to find information for their class assignments.
Furthermore, most students are convinced that the Internet
helps them in their schoolwork, assisting them in learning
more, performing better and enjoying their work.
High-speed Web access enhances the Internet-homework
connection. A greater percentage of students who have
broadband at home, as opposed to dial-up, feel the Net
plays an important part in schoolwork-related activities.
Student broadband users also tend to spend more time
on the Web and prefer to log on at home.
As eMarketer noted yesterday, Nielsen//NetRatings
shows that, for the first time, more Internet users are using
broadband to surf the Web than through narrowband,
which should mean that students will increasingly use
the Net to do schoolwork at home rather than in school.
To cite the obvious, it looks like computers are
here to stay.
Equipping a child with a computer and the internet
appears to have them do well with their studies. Yet
we cannot forget the "social skills and graces"
Computers have a tendency to occupy a lot of peoples
time, particularly children and teens.

Find yourself
"Ego surfing" is a relatively new term floating around tech circles.
It refers to searching the Internet for references to oneself. If you
have never done any ego surfing, it makes for an interesting
adventure. Just go to Google, http://www.google.com, and search
using your name. You might be surprised at what you find, especially
under the "Groups" heading. These are the Internet's message
boards, or newsgroups.

Amalgam or Mercury: A Sense Of Confusion
PART 6 of 9
The Sanoviv Dental Clinic brochure states: The amount
of mercury that is released from amalgam fillings is
dependent on a number of factors. Obviously the number,
size, and length of time these fillings have been
present are important considerations. The type of
amalgam used is also significant, with the newer
amalgam fillings releasing 10 times as much mercury as
those placed 10 to 15 years ago. The amount of mercury
released is also increased by such routine procedures
as eating, drinking hot liquids, and tooth brushing. In
addition, teeth grinding (it is estimated that at least
50% of the population grind their teeth) and chewing
gum can dramatically increase the release of mercury
from amalgam fillings
. Its ultimate effect will be
determined by the above factors, the overall state of
your health, and your bodys ability to naturally
detoxify itself of mercury.
http://www.sanoviv.com/content/category/4/21/43/
I want to raise another bit of awareness. Think through
some of the symptoms you have read about here. Would
you ever connect dizziness with any chemical going into
your body? Would you connect it to your teeth? Most
likely you would visit your doctor, be prescribed a
drug to reduce the dizziness. Would you ever connect
the ringing in your ear or the metallic taste in your
mouth or allergies or stomach problems to anything
dental? I doubt it very much. So I want to encourage
you to think a little differently from now on. Dont
simply grab the obvious drug off the shelf. Look at
other possible causes. Recently I spoke with a lady who
had all her mercury fillings removed, but never had the
gone through a detox process to rid her body of the
leftover mercury. As the conversation progressed, I
found out that she also had allergies. So here we have
at least two possible symptoms to do with mercury
poisoning. But no one had ever connected these symptoms
as having to do with mercury. She is now on a great
detox program! But for her, the obvious next treatment
step was for the specialist to cut her inner ear nerve
because her discomfort was so great. Yet all she may
need to do is to detox her body. It is so important for
you to learn to ask different questions! If this
information about mercury has grabbed your attention at
all and you have had the fortitude to read all the
sections, I salute you and invite you to share your
thoughts with me anytime. It is the way I can help
others. Link for general health questions,

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
It took nearly two hours for them to arrive at
the Henry house. It was not that the house was
that far away, but they had been walking slow and
took a circuitous route. It was a wonderful two
hours that each would remember for the rest of
their lives.
From two or three houses away Tim could see
the garage door open and Tom and Billy working in
the garage. The lawn had been freshly mowed and
the boys were putting away the lawn mower after
they had turned it over and cleaned the underside.
Now they were just sweeping up the mess they had
made. "Hi guys. Nice job."
"Oh! Hi! Hi Sharon. What are you two up to?"
The boys both knew, but this was a way of making
casual conversation, so Tom asked.
"Sharon and I were just walking. I thought I
would bring her home to meet Mom and Dad and maybe
have supper with us." Tim answered in a straight
forward manner, trying to get his feet back on the
ground before he was challenged too much. These
two would do that if they took a notion to.
Tim took Sharon inside. There he introduced
her to his Mom and Dad. "Mom, Dad, I want you to
meet Sharon. She's a school chum and we were just
walking and talking. I asked her to supper if
that's okay with you Mom?"
"Tim that's just fine. Welcome Sharon. It's
nice to have you and you're more than welcome to
stay for supper." Alewka knew immediately what was
going on. She could see the relationship between
her boy and this woman.
"Welcome Sharon" said Sam and he rose, came
over to her and gave her a big hug.
Sharon had not experienced this kind of thing
before. Her parents were not demonstrative
regarding their love toward her. Sam had also
broadcast love unto her and somehow she felt so at
peace that she thought she would like another hug.
That's exactly what Sam did, for he had read her
thoughts.
"Here, sit down and have a coffee, or do you
drink coffee?" Sam also knew what was going on
between the two young people. He made sure Sharon
was in a seat next to where he knew Tim was going
to sit.
All four of them sat at the kitchen table and
talked. Alewka and Sam were curious about Sharon's
folks, where she lived, what grade she was in at
school and all the things that began to make her
welcome into their house.
"Did Tim tell you that we live weird ways
here, that we don't work, that we manifest most of
our food, travel to far away places and that all
of us have strange powers?" Sam was going to test
the mettle of this woman.
"He did Mr. Henry, or rather all the kids in
the restaurant did. Tim just answered what I
asked. I think he is afraid of telling me
everything, for fear I run away." Sharon laughed
as she again teased Tim.
By this time Tim had already sat down beside
her so he was in a position to poke her in the
ribs again, which he did, gently, then he let his
hand drop down onto her lap. She responded by
dropping her own hand onto his and squeezing it,
holding it onto her leg.
Once more that sent Tim's mind and heart into
orbit. He had no clue what to do or say. He only
knew he did not want this to end.
"Steady boy!" were thoughts that came into his
mind. Tim looked at his father, whose eyes
twinkled as he looked back at his son.
Tim knew what was going on and he smiled back
at his Dad.
"Do you need to call home to let them know you
are having supper with us?"
"Yes, Mrs. Henry. I should. Thank you."
Sharon got up and went to the phone that was
hanging on the wall in the hallway. She had seen
it when she came in.
As she was doing that the boys came in from
the garage. They went to the bathroom to wash up
and had returned to the table before Sharon had
finished her phone call.
"But Mom, I am here now and I have accepted
the supper invitation. Don't worry, they are nice
people. Nothing is going to happen to me. Thanks."
With that Sharon hung up the phone and returned to
the table.
"Sharon, I overheard some of your phone
conversation. I guess your folks are not sure of
any relationship you might develop with us. Fear
not, we are not into harming people. Love is the
watchword by which we live. Do not feel
embarrassed either, for we know how people react
toward us. That your parents have not researched
higher law is no surprise for there isn't anyone
they can ask. The churches around here are doing
their best to discredit what we do. They are
afraid of losing their congregations. So your
parents have no other source of information other
than the churches and for sure they will say we
are evil, that we are not of God."
"I don't know what to do Mr. Henry. My Mom is
responding exactly that way. I don't think I'll be
able to talk her out of it. Can your family help?"
"Yes, but only if they approach us. Otherwise
we will be interfering."

A little girl is sitting on her grandpa's lap and studying the
wrinkles on his old face. She gets up the nerve to rub her
fingers over the wrinkles. Then she touches her own face
and looks more puzzled.
Finally the little girl asks, "Grandpa, did God make you?"
"He sure did honey, a long time ago," replies her grandpa.
"Well, did God make me?" asks the little girl.
"Yes, He did, and that wasn't too long ago," answers her
grandpa.
"Boy," says the little girl, "He's sure doing a lot better job
these days isn't He?"
