ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What good is translucent concrete?

In the future, it might be used for places where you would
want light to come through. For instance, used in a
stairwell, it could be a lifesaver in case of fire or power
outage. People trying to escape a dark building could still
have light from outside to see by. It could also be used to
provide daylight for underground structures, like subway
systems. Plus, it's also more attractive than regular
concrete. In Stockholm, where a translucent concrete
sidewalk already has been demonstrated, the sidewalk can be
illuminated by underground lights at night.

How do they make the concrete translucent?

It's made by mixing glass fibers into the usual mixture of
crushed stone, cement, and water. The process was developed
by Aron Losonczi, a Hungarian architect, in 2001.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW!™
with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
---------------------

Its Your Choice

Do you really realize just how much choice you have in your
life? Every moment you are choosing. The trick is to make
those choices conscious, to be aware that you are actually
making a choice at each moment.

I was talking to one of my book editors the other day and he
asked me why I wrote that you choose your perceptions in
life. He wanted to know how I thought that was true. Well,
more accurately, he did not want to believe it was true and
was hoping to convince me otherwise!!

It takes maturity to take responsibility for your choices in
life—all of them. It’s much easier to find someone to blame
for what you do, what you think and how you feel. It’s
quicker, too.

The dictionary says that perception is ‘physical sensation
interpreted in the light of experience’. Wow! Your past
experience actually plays a part in how you see your world.
What a surprise! So, anything you hear, see, taste, touch
or smell can trigger a past memory or a past response.
Whether or not you allow it, though, is your choice. You
can change the way you see life at any minute.

You do choose what you pay attention to at every moment. Do
not let your pre-programming from past experiences determine
how you see your life now. That’s where the real choice in
life is!

Have you ever been in a new relationship that has great
potential for becoming a significant relationship? As you
get to know one another more deeply and the ‘first date’,
‘honeymoon’ phase dissipates, it sometimes happens that that
special person seems to react to some small thing in a way
that completely surprises you. For example, he or she might
display signs of jealousy when you have done nothing to
warrant it. There is an example of a ‘physical sensation
interpreted in the light of experience’. Your new partner
may very well be reacting to a way you looked at someone or
moved your body that they knew to mean flirting in their
past relationship. Now, they want to interpret it in the
same way in your new relationship. No! That’s not fair!

We need to approach each new relationship with an open mind
and a willingness to see and learn about this new partner,
boss, co-worker or friend with new eyes. Sure, you have
learned valuable lessons in the past that will help you make
good decisions, however, it is unfair to generalize the
behaviors of one person when meeting someone new.

Sometimes a person in your life makes some changes for the
positive. She is working hard to be different, to respond
differently, to improve an area of her life. Open yourself
to the possibility of seeing her differently. Give her the
space to change. Notice the changes. Both of you will
benefit.

Everything has the meaning that you give it. A driver cuts
in front of you on the freeway. One day, you can be angry
and curse the driver for being such a complete idiot.
Another day, you can simply say, ‘Oh, maybe, she’s late for
a very important appointment’ and let it go. That’s
choosing how you see things, your perception. The second
approach saves wear and tear on your energy, your nerves and
your sense of well-being.

One day a colleague at work is quiet, uncommunicative and
sullen. You can decide that that person is childish, angry,
pouting or difficult. You may then ignore him or treat him
coldly. Or, you might decide that something very difficult
has happened to them and ask if you can help in some way.
You may simply be compassionate towards them and give them
the space and peace to recover. It’s a choice.

Life goes along much better when you take responsibility for
your choices. You will not be looking for someone to blame
for your mood, your responses or your actions. You choose
the meaning things have and, in that light, you choose your
responses. You are powerful. Every moment of every day you
are deciding how to view your world. Exercise your power to
choose. See things positively. It’s your choice.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 24 of 31

In 1998, approximately 60 million root canals were
performed. While I do not believe that every root canal
will be a source of focal infection, I do believe it
must be considered when attempting to diagnose an
illness or symptom. The root canals that I consider to
be at risk are those whose infection has spread to the
bone surrounding the root tip. Looking to the mouth as
a source of chronic infection is especially important
when the source of a health problem is elusive or an
accurate diagnosis that fits the symptoms cannot be
made.

Cavitations Cavitation is a relatively new dental term.
It refers to the destruction of bone in the area where
a tooth has been extracted. One of the most common
problems that can result from a cavitation is a
neuralgia inducing cavitational osteonecrosis (NICO).
According to experts, if the tooth is not removed
properly, incomplete healing can take place, leaving a
hole or spongy place inside the jawbone. In some cases,
particles of the periodontal membrane, along with
bacteria, can be left behind, becoming a breeding
ground for bacteria and their toxins. Studies indicate
that the bacterial waste products can be extremely
potent. Cavitations are also believed to contribute to
focal infections. They can have an impact on systemic
health and could cause various levels of stress.

Signs and Symptoms of Other Diseases Diseases whose
early signs and symptoms appear in the mouth can affect
the patient’s health and life expectancy. Of these,
oral cancer is of primary concern. More than 30,000
people are diagnosed with oral cancer each year. If the
cancer is caught early, the five-year survival rate is
90%. If it isn’t caught early, the survival rate drops
to 50%. While most dentists include this in their oral
examination you cannot afford to take it for granted.
Always remind the dentist or hygienist to include this
examination.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

What a lot of folks don't know is that the
earth is always having earthquakes, presently at
the rate of five to ten a day. Nearly all of these
are small and create no damage, yet it is a sign
of the earth's continual adjustment. This is
going on all the time. It is just that once in a
while an adjustment will come along that is so big
it causes damage to the things man has created.

Such was the situation for the quake that
happened after Tim's and Sharon's wedding. All the
guests that lived by higher law left to help out
because it was a very large quake and it stretched
for nearly 50 miles (80.5km). Because the quake
was in a relatively isolated area from the rest of
the world, as in not having any emergency
equipment or plan to deal with such an event,
those that live by higher law were called from all
over.

The length of the quake in a hot climate area
meant that many people were affected. It also
meant that groups involved with unacceptable
activities were affected. This area was a hotbed
for terrorism. It did not produce many acts of
violence right here, in the quake zone, but it
trained and shipped out men to other parts of the
world to conduct their ill conceived deeds.

Two things happened to that kind of person
during this quake. Many of them were killed and
those who remained alive came to the sudden
conclusion that keeping alive was more important
than all the scheming they had been doing. It took
the heart out of their plans and the stomach for
further plans was no more.

Thousands had died in this quake, affecting
countless thousands of others. Once the quake had
done it's work the big problem was gathering as
many survivors out of harm's way as possible. That
meant considerable effort was given to finding any
survivors left in downed buildings or caught by
fallen rubble. Additionally there was great danger
that buildings damaged but standing would collapse
in any of the many aftershocks.

First aid stations were set up some distance
from the center of all the damage. There had to be
hundreds of them all along the quakes path. Those
survivors that were well enough to work and whose
mind was not numbed by the event, were all working
hard to help.

The folks who lived by higher law did their
work, both while visible and while invisible.
There were times when it was wise for each
condition. They were not there to change people's
lives, as in create a condition as things were
before the quake, for they well knew nothing
happens by coincidence. They well knew that those
who were killed by the quake were supposed to be
there. They also knew that those who survived were
supposed to, so they set out to aid those.

That task meant they had to lighten heavy
objects so aid workers could lift them and gain
access to people yet buried. It mean that they had
to create "holes" so to speak, so those who were
caught could get out, where there was no help
available. It meant that broken bones, legs, arms
and open wounds had to be tended to or the people
taken or directed to the nearest aid station.

Aid was not organized as if by modern hospital
trained personnel. It was mostly women in groups
who used everything from bedding and clothing,
water, and what food they could find, who aided
anyone who was suffering as a result of the quake.

Everyone's efforts were hindered by the
horrendous amount of dust and debris that had been
kicked up. There was a covering of dust nearly two
inches thick over everything for miles in all
directions. Everything one touched sent up a cloud
of dust. Some of it presented a danger to those
yet alive but buried, because as workers moved
around they were sending dust everywhere. If one
was caught and could not move this dust created
very bad breathing conditions.

Emergency efforts were also hampered by the
water that was flowing toward and within the area
most damaged by the quake. This water was now
carrying much dust, turning it into mud, and was
aiding the decomposition of those animals and
people who had died. The smell was almost
intolerable within hours of the quake.

The heat made things worse for it not only
caused decomposition to happen faster, but it made
it very difficult for people to work. Yet work
they did, long into the nights and early in the
mornings.

No government sponsored aid or assistance was
made available for three days. There were some
government people there to observe and report, but
the national government had no plans or provisions
for such a disaster. The people were left
basically on their own.

HA! HA! HA!

A Scout Master was teaching his boy scouts about survival in
the desert. "What are the three most important things you
should bring with you in case you get lost in the desert?"
he asked.

Several hands went up, and many important things were
suggested such as food, matches, etc. Then one little boy in
the back eagerly raised his hand.

"Yes Timmy, what are the three most important things you
would bring with you?" asked the Scout Master.

Timmy replied: "A compass, a canteen of water, and a deck of
cards."

"Why's that, Timmy?"

"Well," answered Timmy, "the compass is to find the right
direction, the water is to prevent dehydration..."

"And what about the deck of cards?" asked the Scout Master
impatiently.

"Well, sir, as soon as you start playing Solitaire, someone
is bound to come up behind you and say, 'Put that red nine
on top of that black ten!'"
