Do fingernails contain DNA?

Is it true that reading causes nearsightedness?

How could reading or watching television cause myopia?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Does hair contain DNA?

Every single strand of hair contains your unique DNA pattern
(it's a good idea to have a hair with the hair follicle, or
root, attached), as does blood, saliva, and other bodily
substances. Virtually every cell in your body contains DNA.
A notable exception is red blood cells, or mature
"erythrocytes." Developing red blood cells within the bone
marrow have nuclei (which contains DNA), but the nuclei are
lost as they mature. Blood testing for DNA measures DNA in
white blood cells.

Can you get DNA off a licked postage stamp?

It's difficult, but yes, you can obtain a DNA sample from a
licked postage stamp.

AOL, MSN seize spam assets
by Jon Swartz, USA TODAY

America Online and Microsoft are hitting spammers where it
hurts most: They are confiscating their assets and giving
them away.

AOL, the world's largest Internet service provider, is
awarding $20,000 in gold bars, a 2003 Hummer H2 and $75,000
in cash it seized from a major spammer as part of a legal
settlement last year. It will hold a sweepstakes on its Web
site starting Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Microsoft on Tuesday said Scott Richter, once
considered one of the world's top spammers, and his company,
OptInRealBig.com, agreed to pay $7 million under a legal
settlement. Microsoft is donating $1 million to a New York
program to provide computer gear to community centers. It
will spend $5 million more on anti-spam efforts.

"We think it's justice," says Curtis Lu, AOL deputy general
counsel. "We're taking the ill-gotten bounty these spammers
have earned off the backs of our customers and handing it
back to customers."

The unusual actions illustrate how far AOL and Microsoft are
willing to go to discourage spammers, who for years have
hounded popular Internet services with unwanted commercial
e-mail, and to appease harried users. The largest spammers
charge clients up to $50,000 a month to e-mail ads.

It is the second time AOL has given away assets accumulated
by spammers. Last year, AOL awarded a $45,000 Porsche
Boxster.

This year's drawing signifies the effectiveness of the
federal Can-Spam Act, Lu says. AOL collected the gold, truck
and cash after suing a spammer under the stricter law last
year. The lawsuit was one of a dozen AOL filed since the law
went into effect Jan. 1, 2004. It "has struck fear into
spammers," Lu says.

The flurry of recent lawsuits has made an appreciable dent
in the spam pouring into AOL's and Microsoft's online
services, the companies say. Spam is down 85% at AOL, based
on member complaints.

Still, spam remains a thorny issue for U.S. consumers and
businesses despite high-profile legislation and lawsuits.
About 72% of e-mail is spam, up from 68% a year ago, says
IronPort Systems, an e-mail security vendor. It says many
spammers are shifting targets, from AOL and MSN to
businesses and broadband users with less security and fewer
legal resources.

Some spammers are adding viruses to steal personal data,
computer-security experts say.

"We shouldn't declare victory, but we are turning the tide,"
says Brad Smith, Microsoft general counsel.

Steve Richter, Scott's father and attorney, said his son has
agreed to comply with the federal anti-spam law, and his
company is "making every effort to be a model for the best
Internet marketing practices."

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 26 of 31

It should be noted that today people are exposed to
greater quantities of fluoride than 25 years ago. At
that time, the major source of fluoride exposure was
fluoridated water. Today, it is also found in
mouthwash, toothpaste, rinses, and tablets. Some
evidence shows that fluorosis has caused dental
fluorosis (unsightly stained and pitted enamel) in
children in areas where the water isn’t even
fluoridated. No one knows how much fluoride each
individual is getting. Fluoride toxicity is definitely
something to watch for, especially in communities where
the water is fluoridated.

Topical fluoride applied at the dental office has been
shown to effectively reduce decay in individuals whose
teeth are susceptible to it. I don’t have a problem
with this form of application as it is controlled and
little, if any, will be ingested. The key to fluoride
toxicity is that it has to enter the body and thus
topical application of it, done properly, prevents that
occurrence. But I do have a concern about high fluoride
concentrations applied to the teeth of young children
without adequate protection against ingestion. There
have been documented cases of fluoride toxicity when
very young children swallowed an excessive amount of
topical fluoride gel.

Idiopathic Diseases I previously mentioned the
relationship of oral health to diseases that are
idiopathic, or those we don’t know, or are uncertain,
of their cause.

In a very real sense the idiopathic (unknown) aspect
makes it imperative that those that are dealing with
any idiopathic disease or illness MUST consider every
health problem as a potential cause or contributor of
their problem. I say this because any of them, or any
combination of them, could be a contributing factor.
The only way to actually know which ones may be
involved in an idiopathic health issue is to eliminate
each of them and let the body tell you what role it has
played. As oral health is in my area of expertise, I
have listed those oral health issues that I KNOW have
an effect, some very serious such as amalgam
fillings/chronic mercury poisoning and gum disease. But
all oral health issues must be evaluated and dealt
with.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

Within seconds Tlang had the little girl in
her arms. She was shaking and sobbing as a result
of her ordeal. Tlang wondered if the little girl's
parents were still alive. Her senses told her
"yes", so she set about to find them.

Tlang and Tom brought the little girl out of
the collapsed building just as an aftershock hit.
There was screaming, fear and terror heard and
seen everywhere. Several of the buildings
collapsed further, including the one they were
just in. The flooring fell in and from all the
weight on the stairs, they collapsed too.

Tom and Tlang looked at one another. That was
a close one. The aftershock only lasted a minute
but it did take down the rest of the weakened
buildings. There was dust everywhere. There were
clouds of it that had risen from the shock and
from buildings falling and from people running in
fear. You could hardly see where you were going.
Breathing was near impossible.

The little girl hung onto Tlang as if there
were nothing else in the world for shelter. She
had enough of this and all she wanted was comfort.

Tom and Tlang "homed" in on the little girls
Mother. She had been hurt and was in one of the
aid stations. She couldn't walk. Her husband was
with her, holding her hand, both of them in fear
they had lost their children.

It took a while for Tom and Tlang to walk the
distance. As they neared the aid station they were
leaving the quake behind. The air was cleaner here
and eventually they were able to work their way
through the milling crowd to a spot where they
could identify the little girl's parents.

The instant her parents saw the couple coming
with a little girl in their arms they knew it was
their little girl. The Father let go of the
Mother's hand and came running, as best he could.
He, too, had been injured. His leg had been badly
mauled by falling rock. He moved as quickly as he
could. Something in his heart told him this was
his little girl.

The reunion was a tear jerker. Both the Father
and the little girl were crying. He looked at
Tlang and at Tom. The look in his eyes said "Thank
you."

Both Tom and Tlang knew there was another
child. Looking into the man's heart they knew the
little fellow was the younger brother to this
little girl. The boy was not yet four years of
age. The parents had no idea where he was.

Tom and Tlang once more homed in on the
vibrations given out by the family. Three of the
four were present and the fourth was drawing them
back into the quake area. They knew the youngster
was alive. They knew they would find him.

They both vanished, to the eyes of those
watching. It did not register on anyone because of
the chaos and confusion that was there.

Tom and Tlang found themselves in a dangerous
situation. They were under a bit of an overhanging
cliff the looked as if it were going to fall at
any minute. The boy was trapped under some rock
that had fallen around him, and the water was
rising around him. All that was visible was his
head and that was disappearing. Somehow he was in
this location far from anyone else. There were no
workers around for at least a block. There were
others in this area, too.

Tom stood back and, with concentration, sent
energy into all the rock. He lightened them to the
point they were as light as styrofoam. Then he
sent more energy into the area that was designed
to energize any person caught. The sight was a
miraculous one. From out of the rubble, now
lightened, came 40 or 50 who had been held captive
by the quake's result. Even the little four year
old now was able to stand and walk out. Tlang
reached down to him and took his hand.

The rescued people were all stunned, some
wounded. Tom with one last burst of energy
rendered them all whole and perfect. Some had been
infirm before the quake and now could walk and
were made perfect. There was a quite outcry and
sobbing of thankfulness. All gathered around Tom
and Tlang.

They began a slow steady walk toward the aid
station which, from this point was five miles
away. They were some sight. Tom and Tlang with the
little boy in hand, leading a group of quake
victims toward help. None were any longer injured
but they were stunned from the events that had
happened to them. It would take two or three days
before they could resume normal thinking and
movement.

It took a couple hours to get back to the aid
station. Once some of those in the group saw the
people at the aid station and recognized some of
them, they ran. There was much chaos and
happiness. The group behind them overtook Tom,
Tlang and the little boy, almost trampling them in
the stampede.
