TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
What president never registered to vote and didn't even vote
in his own election?
Is it true that the US once used bats to release bombs?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Why was the US without a president for one day in 1849?
Zachary Taylor was supposed to be sworn in as president on
Sunday, March 4, 1849. But, being a religious man, he
insisted he wouldn't take the oath on a Sunday, which was
the Sabbath. He became president on Monday instead.
So we really didn't have a president for a day?
Technically, say some historians, we did. It wasn't the
former president, James Polk, whose term had just expired.
And his vice-president, George M. Dallas, couldn't do it
because his term had just expired too. So it fell to the
President Pro Tem of the Senate, David Rice Atchison.
Atchison legally became the President for a twenty-four hour
period, even though he was never elected to this office or
sworn in. There has been some controversy over whether
Atchison was REALLY president for a day. Those who say "Nay"
note that Atchison was appointed as President Pro Tem for
each session of the Senate. Since the previous session of
the Senate had been dismissed, one could claim that
Atchison's term had expired (even though he was to continue
in this role when the Senate reconvened for the next
session).

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
Death by Excuse!
It's too late, it's too early, it's too heavy, it's too hot,
it's too cold, it's too far, it's too much money.
Anybody ever heard these words?
Another question, has anybody ever heard these words out of
their own mouth?
The simple utterance of words like these can stop a project
before it even begins. Before that, even. They can stop a
project before it is thought about, researched, or
masterminded.
And there is another dangerous spot words like these get a
foot hold. In one's mind.
Take an internet marketer, as an example. Here we have
someone just beginning. Often, the first thing they think of
is the amount of money they will make in a hurry on the net.
Somewhere between three and six months the horrible
realization creeps into their consciousness that this
fortune is not forthcoming. OOOH! So discouraging. Yet they
plod on, for what they now aren't sure.
Then they have friends, spouses, significant others, who
complain of the time taken to get this business underway,
and nothing happens.
The frustration mounts. This person has read all the
platitudes issued by others and somehow that is how they
affect him, from a distance, by others. It is almost
impossible to see how wisdom can help, now.
They get tired, then frustrated. They have sunk a large
amount of money into this venture, and, a huge amount of
time. Life, happiness, fun - all seem to have gone to other
places.
Then, for the first time for a long time there is a subtle
little thought allowed to enter the mind. Someone says "I
know lots of guys that tried that. It'll never work, Give it
up! Get a life!". Those are words issued by a well meaning
friend, trusted.
You begin to think his motive was sincere. It might well
have been that he does not want you to be more successful
than he, but from his mouth the words sure sound as if he is
genuinely concerned about you.
Now, disaster. You are actually thinking about quitting. Oh!
You don't quit today, not even tomorrow, but somehow the
thought is now in your brain and actively running around
looking for any excuse.
You no longer spring out of bed to tackle the day with a
bounce You already know you have to get back in front of
that computer to try another day that will surely end up
like the hundred before. Your mind begins to think this way.
Another day, another confrontation with the significant
other and then it happens. You made a sale, over which you
were delighted, and now you have an email where the person
wants their money back. Your heart sinks into your shoes.
Why, why, why are you doing this. Why did you ever start. It
isn't going to work. Quit.
The mind is now gathering impetus on the negative side. Then
- - - - one day - - - you don't get up until three or four
hours later. Work is no longer fun. You quit.
All this because you let room in your mind for a few
negative ideas. You accepted them. You did not boot them
out. They come at you day after day, night after night, and
up to now you have mastered your thoughts. But you made a
mistake and let a few negative vibes catch you off guard.
They grew in your mind, until they began to bear fruit.
You were, in the later time, saying to your self it's too
late, it's too early, it's too heavy, it's too hot, it's too
cold, it's too far, it's too much money. You began, yourself
to offer excuses unto yourself. You began to believe them
and failed to overcome them on a daily basis. You lost your
thrust. You lost your vision. You lost belief in yourself.
Your business, had you kept on looking, searching, coming up
with ideas, kept on trying, while on the road to success
just suffered ...

Pulling Off A Scab...Not A Good Thing To Do.
Picture this.the cut or scrape on your forearm is now healed
or so it looks. The scab is dry and it's beginning to bug
you. It's in the way when you dry your arm. It's getting
itchy. A corner is lifting up. You're thinking it's time to
rip that sucker off. Not so fast!! In my years of nursing
I've seen the results of this "ripping off" and some of them
were not too pretty! I'll never forget the look on the face
of a real macho guy as he started to rip the scab off his
leg. Hairy, very hairy legs. Heavy, thick wool sock, fresh
(very fresh) out of his leather boot. He was showing me his
scab and I think he noticed it as an "incidental"
obstruction or irritation. He proceeded to yank up one
corner with the intention of just pulling it all off.
Obviously the underlying skin hadn't quite healed and it
started to bleed.profusely! Man, was he surprised! And what
a mess! The blood flowed freely down his leg, into his wool
sock, and onto his fingers! There are easier ways to achieve
the same end results. If you want to get rid of a scab, you
have three choices.
First you can just leave it alone till nature lets it fall
off. That would be best and I think my
biker acquaintance wished he had done that.
Secondly, you can yank it off like my biker friend did.
Or thirdly, you can soak it off. Number 2 option gives you a
few better procedures, BUT I don't recommend you do this any
of these at all. If you HAVE to remove the scab, be prepared
for pain, bleeding, and possible infection. And later on, a
scar that will take a long time to fade away. If you are
just going to rip it off, have soap and water handy. Wash
your hands first. Then in fresh water, wash the soft fragile
skin underneath. Pat it dry well. Then leave it to air-dry.
Don't cover it unless you are in a dirty environment in
which case.don't remove the scab! It's nature's way of
protecting you. Chances are it will start to bleed and itch.
Keep your fingers away from it and don't scratch! Here's a
gentler, safer way to remove the scab if you really MUST get
it off. Immerse the limb in a warm clean a bath, bowl, or
pail. Soak it for quite a while. Then dry it gently with a
clean soft cloth, and let it air-dry.
What, if on the limb if it will not fit into a bowl, etc.?
Moisten a clean face cloth in a small amount of water and
salt (1 teaspoon in one liter of water) and then place this
on the scab. Soak the scab for a long while. (You might want
to wrap the whole thing in a plastic bag so it doesn't drip
all over you.) Repeat this procedure a few times for the
next couple of days. You will notice the scab turning a
lighter colour. Two or three days of repetitive soaking will
have it fall off. There will be no bleeding. The underlying
tissue covers it, albeit very thinly. This skin will be very
fragile and pale, but it will protect you from any
infections unless you introduce bacteria to it.
So keep the environment clean. And keep your
fingers away from the area, no matter how itchy it gets!
This "immature" skin will be very pale in contrast to your
regular skin tone. If you are a person of colour or have
concentrated melanin, this pink area will be quite apparent
for a while.weeks probably. For best results, leave the scab
alone. Then you won't have to worry about pain, bleeding
infection or scars.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

While this was going on other men from the
village had prepared a raft upon which they built
a square log structure, much like the walls of a
house. Within the structure they placed especially
dried wood, shavings and highly combustible
material. Then they added much liquid fat.
The village all gathered around the door of
the long hut. They waited, knowing what they would
see and what would happen next.
The doors opened.
Three elders came out of the door, the oldest
first, then the next and then the next. Each was
carrying a burning torch high in the air.
Following them was another four who were carrying
the cremation board on their shoulders, one on
each corner.
Once outside the hut they stopped. At this
point the three elders in front stopped, turned
and began a chant. At the end of the chant Mazunta
and Eloise replaced the bearers at the front
corner of the board and David and Boolanga
replaced the bearers on the rear corners.
The elders turned and the procession moved
slowly through the village, the bearers behind the
cremation board and they were followed by the rest
of the village.
The village was wailing. There were tears in
every eye, especially the children, each of whom
loved Midnight.
The procession continued with each person
dreading the moment when it would stop.
That moment came all too quickly, for they
were now at the river's edge. Mazunta and Eloise
stopped before the cremation raft. They, along
with Boolanga and David, took the four corners of
the cremation board and slowly shuffled sideways
out into the river, moving on each side of the
cremation raft. When they were in position, they
lowered the cremation board onto the raft.
Midnight was now resting about three feet
above the water on this raft.
Mazunta, Eloise, Boolanga and David turned and
came back unto shore.
They lined up behind the elders who were
facing the crowd from the village. The oldest
turned and placed his torch into Eloise's hands.
He then turned to face the villagers. Raising
his hands he began a chant. It was an age old
chant, passed down through the ages within this
group. When he was finished he spoke -
"Many years ago our beloved Boolanga brought
unto this village three visitors. Two were people
and the third was a magnificent black cat, a
panther. We were afraid of this cat for we thought
she would kill us. Boolanga then assured us this
cat was our friend and if we would let it the cat
would protect our village. That is exactly what
Midnight did. For over ten years we have lived in
peace, each of us knowing Midnight was on patrol.
Our children have grown up with her and she has
been a playmate for them. Because of Midnight we
have become known far up and down the river as the
village with the black cat. None have wanted to
come and molest us for fear of the cat. She
befriended us when she could have taken to the
jungle, her natural home. She honored us with her
presence and she will be missed. Midnight has
touched the lives of every member of this village
and our hearts are heavy that she has decided to
leave us. She goes with our blessing and our
gratitude for those long years of service she
rendered unto us."
He lowered his hands. The village wept as one.
There were men in the water, holding a canoe
for the mourners. The canoe they held was the very
first one David and Boolanga had worked on. David
had carved an image of Midnight and made her part
of this canoe. There on the prow she stood tall
and proud.
Eloise, with the torch, got into the canoe
first, right up at the front. Then a paddler got
in behind her and he was followed by Mazunta,
David and Boolanga, then another paddler. The
canoe was headed up river.
With more chanting from the elders, the canoe
was launched and began a slow journey out into the
middle of the river and up river. The cremation
raft was in tow.
The process took well over an hour. The
paddlers knew how far upstream they had to go so
the funeral fire would be over as it approached
the village. While it was a long way up river it
was still in sight of the village.
At the right time and place the paddlers let
go of the funeral raft and turned the canoe
around. They brought the canoe back up next to the
cremation raft.
Eloise could hardly see. The tears in her eyes
were not letting her get a good view of the raft.
She had a lump in her throat that was so big she
could hardly breath. The task of lighting the
cremation raft had fallen to her. It was not a job
she wanted.

HA! HA! HA!
A little boy always went next door to play even though his
mom had warned him against doing so. This worried his mom so
badly that she asked him why he was so disobedient.
He replied that Satan tempted him so bad and he did not know
what to do.
His mom then advised him to say 'get behind me Satan'
whenever he was tempted. She then built a fence around the
house.
This worked for a week, then one sunny afternoon his mom
looked out the window and there was her son playing on the
neighbors lawn having cut a hole in the fence.
"Jeremiah", she yelled, "come here!" She then said "did I
not tell you to say 'get behind me Satan' whenever he
tempted you?"
"Yes", the boy replied, "I said, 'get behind me Satan', then
he went behind me and pushed me through the hole in the
fence."
