TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
Is a wombat a type of bat?
Is it true that the Shakers got their name from the wild
shaking they engaged in?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Did the idea work?
Initial testing of the bat-bomb idea was difficult. Many of
the bats, placed in hibernation before being dropped, never
woke up on the way down. Others had their wings broken on
the way down because the descent was too dramatic. Others
managed to escape the testing facility and set fires to
outlying buildings. The project, run by the US Army, was
given over to the US Navy, which was more successful. By
March 1944, more than one million bat-bombs were set to
begin production and more than two million dollars had been
spent on the program. But before millions of bats carrying
bombs could be set loose over Japan, the project was halted.
One explanation for the abrupt end to "Project X-Ray" was
that the US didn't want the bats to be perceived by the rest
of the world as a biological weapon. But another reason may
be that a more deadly bomb - the atomic bomb - was chosen
instead.
Is it true the Japanese attempted to hit the US mainland
with balloon bombs?
Yes. Japanese meteorologists thought that the Japanese
military could take advantage of the jet stream that runs
from West to East to send hydrogen-filled balloons fitted
with bombs across the Pacific to the US. The strange weapon,
dubbed "Fu-Go," actually worked. Five kids and their mother
in Bly, Oregon, died when they dragged one of the balloon
bombs out of the woods. From late 1944 to Spring 1945, the
Japanese are believed to have launched more than 9,000
deadly balloons. About 1,000 are estimated to have reached
North America. But no one else was killed, and the Japanese
stopped launching the balloons because they had no idea the
balloons were actually reaching their destination. The US
kept the news quiet.
Interested in learning more about "Project X-Ray?" Then pick
up a copy of Jack Couffer's book, Bat Bomb: World War II's
Other Secret Weapon (University of Texas Press, Austin,
1992). Author Jack Couffer served on the team that designed
and tested the bat-bombs.

Kraft Recipes on Your iPod
by Enid Burns
A new marketing application from Kraft is leveraging the
iPod phenomenon in a way that goes beyond podcasting .
Owners of the ubiquitous device who download the company's
"Greatest Hits of Summer" widget can carry a library of over
100 Kraft-inspired recipes with them wherever they go.
The download, promoted at kraftfoods.com, offers grilling
ideas, desserts, and additional recipes featuring Kraft
ingredients. Users can browse recipes using the iPod's
scroll wheel and look up ingredients while at the grocery
store.
"Because Kraft consumers have busy lives and demanding
schedules, we liked the idea of being able to provide them
with food ideas and resources wherever they might need
them," Ian Smith, director of global digital marketing at
Kraft, told ClickZ News.
The Kraft recipe files use the iPod Notes feature, stored
separately from audio files on the player and take up less
than one megabyte of space. Smith said Kraft will develop
additional downloads if there is continued positive consumer
response and interest.
"In evaluating this opportunity, we considered iPod's broad
appeal, personality and leadership in the digital music
player category," said Smith.
The promotion is one of a limited number of iPod
applications that don't use audio, an area that may be ripe
for innovation. The iPod Photo is particularly well-suited
to graphical development. One entrepreneur has made subway
maps for several cities available for download at
ipodsubwaymaps.com.

ARAMETER=ovulation&x=32&y=4 Unless you use artificial means
only sexual intercourse between a male and a female will
result in pregnancy. IF SPERM CANNOT GET INTO THE UTERUS IT
CANNOT FERTILIZE AN EGG, AND PREGNANCY CANNOT OCCUR.
"Barrier methods such as condoms (male or female),
diaphragms (with or without spermicide) and sponges (with
spermicide) have as their first line of defense the physical
blocking of the sperm's entry into the uterus. ****IF SPERM
CANNOT GET INTO THE UTERUS IT CANNOT FERTILIZE AN EGG, AND
PREGNANCY CANNOT OCCUR. An IUD works in a different way, by
making the uterus toxic to sperm and by disturbing the
lining of the uterus so that it won't allow egg
implantation. The hormones in oral contraceptives and
hormone implants fool the ovaries into refraining from
ovulation, and without a fertile egg, pregnancy will not
occur. IUDs and oral contraceptives and hormones may be used
as emergency contraception in the case of unprotected sex,
but neither one will protect against sexually-transmitted
disease." Sourced from: Medline

Your hormones control the release of the egg, but it still
needs the male sperm to fertilize it. I have added the
contraception information ("against getting pregnant) in
case you felt you needed more information.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

Mae walked up to David and gave him a hug.
Then she did the same for all the rest of the
group, including Tlang. "Hello, Tlang. How are you
doing, dear?"
"I'm fine, Miss Mae. I miss you."
"Ahh, my dear, I was at the orphanage. It is
you who was not there. Could it be that you have
another interest?" Mae was laughing.
Tlang blushed at her comments. "Yes." she
spoke quietly
Mae walked over to Pam and the children while
Susan paid her respects to the mourners. She, too,
gave Tlang a hug and teased her.
Tlang knew the ladies were good natured and
having fun with her. She also knew they respected
her, her decision and her present state of mind
and heart. They each knew what first love was
about. In this case it was not only a first love
but a meeting of souls, a lifetime and eternal
love.
Tlang had no problem with the teasing but it
still made her blush. She stayed with Tom and the
family.
What little time Tlang had spent with the
Henry family was enough for her to know this is
the life she wanted. She was not only secure, now
that she lived by higher law, but she felt a solid
and undying love within the Henry family. This
family had respect for each other, love for each
other and a comradeship she had not seen before.
She liked what she saw and felt.
For the Henry part, Tlang was welcomed with
open arms, unreservedly. They knew Tlang and they
knew Tom. The entire family was behind them with
any support they needed. That is just how the
Henry's were.
The visiting, the noise of people talking, the
fire, the family, and all that was going on, now
had Eloise's mind away from the event that
sponsored this fire tonight. She was kept busy
with the visiting and with her children.
The same held true for David, Maz, and
Boolanga. This was not so much a forgetting, but a
moving on. No one would ever forget Midnight,
certainly not those who had been close to her. Yet
life did move on, new and different things would
come up and it would be natural for all the
village to carry on. The memories of Midnight
would be held dear by all in the village, yet life
would go on without her and they were all willing
participants.
The fire went on well into the night. When the
last flickers of flame were giving up and
remaining only as hot coals, there were few
villagers left at the fire. All had gone to their
huts to sleep, that they might be able to face the
following day.
It came in as a bright and sunny day. It would
be a hot one and the only clothing most folks wore
was just enough to protect their modesty. Only
private parts were covered.
Those who lived by higher law had on a few
more clothes because they each could and would set
up their own environment when they felt so
inclined.
That Midnight was no longer there was an
obvious piece of knowledge felt in everyone's
heart. But what does one do? Well, the kids were
up to their usual game of ball on the beach. They
had many onlookers watching and laughing at what
was happening. Others were preparing, eating or
concluding meals, all the while talking about
Midnight, while others, like the Henrys, were
moving about the village talking with those they
met.
Sam and Alewka and the kids were held in very
high esteem in this village. Not only did they
conduct themselves respecting highly the rights
and positions of others, but they were also the
family of the villages beloved Missy, (Eloise).
Eloise was held in very high regard and that meant
that she had come from good stock, meaning Sam and
Alewka.
The Henrys enjoyed the privilege, but were
well aware it had to be earned to be upheld.
The sadness of the occasion had Alewka in a
somewhat melancholy mood. She began to look over
their past. "My, Sam. Do you realize what changes
we wrought when we let Gladstone take our Eloise
on that incredible journey? My a lot of water has
flowed down that river since that fateful day."

A woman went into a bank to get a check cashed, but she
didn't have an account with them. When the teller her asked
for some identification, the woman showed her several charge
cards, her social security card and a library card.
The teller told her they needed a driver's license, but the
woman said she didn't have one.
"Don't you have anything with your picture on it?" the
teller asked.
"Oh, sure," she said, as she flipped to a family photo in
her wallet. "That's me in the back row."
