TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

Why are mustaches forbidden among the Amish people?

What famous English romantic poet was also a doctor?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What's the difference between the Amish, Quakers, and
Shakers?

The Amish, Quakers, and Shakers - three religious groups in
the US - seem similar to many who don't belong to them. But
there are striking differences too. All three groups are
Christian, all are pacifist, and all are non-materialistic,
favoring a certain plainness in dress and lifestyle. All
three groups also have a deep respect for the land and
natural resources. The Shakers and the Amish have withdrawn
from the world to live in their own communities. Quakers, on
the other hand, live among everyone else. The three groups
also differ on theological matters, as well as the way in
which they live. The Amish reject modern technology,
including electricity. The Shakers, however, actually
embrace modern technology, as well as modern science. Many
inventions have been attributed to the Shakers. Quakers, of
course, also have no problem with modern technology, as they
live in the world at large. Both Quakers and the Amish
believe in marriage, but Shakers are celibate and rely on
conversion to their religion to increase their ranks.
Shakers believe in full equality of the sexes, while among
the Amish, men and women must fill certain traditional
roles.

Why don't the Amish use electricity?

The Amish don't believe electricity is evil in itself. But
they do believe that easy access to electricity can lead to
many temptations and the eventual deterioration of church
and family life. The Bible tells the Amish that they are not
to be "conformed to the world." (Romans 12:2) The Amish
community believes that linking with electrical wires would
violate this command and connect them to the world.

Put It In Writing!

Ever been asked to 'Put it in Writing.'? Sure, you have. Did
you immediately go to your desk and effortlessly record your
thoughts and suggestions? Or, perhaps, you struggled and
anguished? For most folks, producing useful, credible and
appropriate written communication requires careful thought.
Those folks are wise. Written communication is an excellent
opportunity to showcase your communication skills. Writing
something down not only clarifies an issue, it tends to
gives the idea longevity, and, sometimes, a life of its own.
Write carefully!

Written communication can be a double-edged sword, can't it?
Well done, it can positively influence your career. Poorly,
quickly or thoughtlessly done, it can work against you
repeatedly. In a way, it IS written in stone. There it sits
for everyone to see...and revisit.

Caution: Avoid putting negative information in writing!
Absolutely do not put negative information in writing unless
it is accurately supported by verifiable fact.

If you want or need to convey your opinion or perception, do
so orally. Say it, rather than write it. Things have a
tendency to be scrutinized much more closely when they are
in writing. Folks look for inaccuracies and 'fodder for
blame' in written communication. Written words scribed in
the heat of the moment can sit in someone's files and become
inadvertent weapons for years to come. A negative written
communication can become a time bomb just waiting for the
wrong person to detonate it. In 'Getting Promoted', Harry E.
Chambers says: "Enemies created in writing tend to have long
life spans." Be careful.

There are a few basic guidelines to keep in mind before you
put pen to paper or allow your fingers to touch those keys.
Sure, the important thing is the message itself, however,
how that message is conveyed is a message in itself! Grammar
counts. Poor grammar detracts from the message. You do not
want anything to get in the way of your important message,
do you? Your computer may be a help as it suggests
grammatical changes, but, it is not infallible. You need the
skills to catch errors. You know that your spell checker is
limited otherwise it would not have left this poem intact:

Eye halve a spelling chequer It came with my pea sea. It
plainly marcs four my revue Miss steaks eye kin Knot Sea.
Eye strikes a key And type a word And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong oar write It shows me strait a weigh.
As soon as a mist ache is maid It nose bee fore two long And
eye can put the error rite Its rare lea ever wrong. Eye has
run this poem threw it I am shore your pleased two no Its
letter perfect awl the weigh My checker tolled me sew.

(borrowed from
www.virginiawater.co.uk/webnews/webnewsapr00.html Thanks.)

Make your writing concise. No one has the time or desire to
read a novel about your topic. "Just the facts, Ma'am."
That's what's needed. Quality, not quantity, is best.
Winston Churchill is reported to have said to an aide
placing a three-inch-high report on his desk, "That report,
by its very size, demands that it will never be read." Be
sure to read what you write before you send it. No one needs
an exercise in endurance to capture your point.

Take every opportunity to put positive information in
writing. Thank and congratulate folks. Report on all
successes, major and minor. Recommend solutions. Provide
updates. When you've got something good to say, Harry
Chambers says: "Insure accuracy, provide proof when
available or necessary, and distribute the communication as
widely as possible." Being the author of good news can put
your name in a positive light when promotion time arrives,
too! This has got to be good!

Write as you speak and speak thoughtfully. This is the best
guideline for written communication at work.

And More About Sprains and Strains
PART 1 of 2

A reader asked:

Hello, I would like to enquire about health
problems related to sprains and pain on the body. I sprained my
right leg (ankle down) in a fall from bicycle about 4 and a half
years ago. I've seen like those traditional Chinese doctors
where they give the ankles a rub with some oil. However, I
discovered that the condition is on and off. I tried to use
holistic healing; like clearing away certain thought patterns
that deal with sprains for recovery, I found it too slow or is
not practical. Because of my tendency to walk everyday, this had
to re-exert on the sprain daily, myself putting some oil and
rubbing on it is of little use. I am thinking of looking into
other forms like kinesiilogy for a cure. These sound a bit
impractical but I really have no idea how else to treat this
sprain. At times the sprain develops into a flaming, sharp pain.
Do you have a cure treatment for sprain? Thanks.

My response:

A SPRAIN has to do with ligaments...the fibrous
bands that connect bones to the bone. So it's always at a hard
surface/bone and at joints. A STRAIN has to do with muscle, and
you have those all over the body....shoulders, neck, arms, legs,
thighs...For most active people, resting the affected body part
for any length of time is just not acceptable or practical. We
want healing very quickly and have little patience to let nature
take its course. You have a sprain at your right ankle, so your
ligament is stretched at the joint and walking on it every day
will not allow it to heal. And the pain aspect is TELLING you
the area has NOT healed.

A sprain is a stretching or tearing of ligaments. Ligaments are
tough bands of fibrous tissue that connect one bone to another.
They help to stabilize joints, preventing excessive movement.
Sprains are frequently caused by rapid changes in direction or
by a collision, and in your case, a fall from your bike. Common
locations for sprains are your ankles and knees (joints). A
strain, on the other hand, is a stretching or tearing of muscle.
This type of injury often occurs when muscles suddenly and
powerfully contract - or when a muscle stretches unusually far.
I used to have a problem remembering which is which, but I
decided that "l" came before "m" and sprain came before
strain...so I connected ligaments to being a sprain and muscles
to being connected to strains. :) (You have to do what works for
you!! But I know many people use them interchangeably...not that
it makes it correct, but at least it gives you an idea of their
question/answer.) People commonly call muscle strains "pulled
muscles". Hamstring injuries (the muscle running up from the
ankle at the back of your leg) are among the most common
strains. It's important to heal these as they support your limbs
(legs, arms) and skeleton. Your injury sound as though this is a
chronic problem and it was probably not allowed to heal
completely when it first happened. You MUST allow this to
heal...and make sure you take in nutrients that will help the
healing process. It's the only way to promote effective healing.
Ligaments have relatively less blood supply than does muscle, so
the healing will be slower. You could end up having surgery to
tighten up the ligament, and that's a last resort. There is much
you can do before that. I would be inclined to tackle this
problem from the inside (internally) as well as the outside
(externally). The inside "work" would include drinking lots of
water to wash away as many free radicals as possible. Rest would
be very important. I would find myself the very best nutritional
supplement possible, as it would be loaded with anti-oxidants:
the only way to neutralize the free radicals present. And if I
had some pain, I would try to determine why it was happening. My
near to last resort would be a painkiller, but sometimes it's
time for this step. Externally, if I had this situation, I would
elevate my (leg) limb anytime possible. I would ask my doctor
about hot and cold "treatments" and get proper teaching for
this. I would also find some physiotherapy support. After all
this time, this could well be turning into a "degenerative
condition". Some people end up with arthritis from these
injuries. But it's not necessary to have that happen. I would
suggest that now you have had this injury for a while, it will
take much longer to respond to therapy, but you need to get
healing into the leg started. Footwear would be a priority. You
need to cushion the foot from more pressure and bouncing. Any
chance you have to let it rest or elevate it, take it. Here are
some really good sites to visit. I trust someone has checked
your foot for other injuries or damage?

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

Sam jostled her for teasing him. He loved her
for it. It was one of those things in their
marriage that continually told him how much she
loved him and reminded him of how much he loved
her. At just the right time and circumstance she
would, each day, tease him two or three times.

He remembered he had been married to this
woman now for over 40 years. He was so used to her
he could not conceive of life without her. She had
kept the household together during the early lean
years. She had endured their "growing together"
fights and arguments early on. She had raised all
of their children and taught them how to have
respect and love for their parents. When the kids
were old enough that Sam could play with them,
take them out on camping trips and do things with
them, she let them go.

That's when Sam could do his work and it was
during this period Sam began to speak to his kids
about how life was not always what it seemed. It
was then Sam taught his kids how to overcome
panic, how to meditate and he showed them the
reasons why.

Between Sam and Alewka the children had a
very solid foundation of love, training and
education. They not only learned they were loved.
They learned resourcefulness, independence, how to
rely on oneself first, and how, when caught where
you don't know your way around, to go inside and
listen to what you are being told.

It was this last lesson that ultimately led
Eloise into higher law. She was placed in an
environment where she not only had nothing to lose
by trying, she had life to gain if she did try.
Eloise knew, in the jungle, that if she didn't
listen to what she was being told, inside, she
would not survive. She made meditation a regular
part of her day and always did what she was told.
That led to her meeting Sien who guided her
through the last final steps crossing the veil of
simplicity. It was then she began life as a Master
of higher law. And it was then she brought that
knowledge home to show her parents and brothers.

Now Sam and Alewka were sitting on the bank of
the Amazon river talking about all the things that
had happened to them throughout their 40 some
years together. This was the village where their
daughter, Eloise, lived with her husband and her
children. Sam and Alewka loved this village and
they loved the people in it.

That feeling was mutual and any of Eloise's
family were always made to feel right at home
here.

"You know, honey. We should start taking some
time and visit some of the folks we like and love.
For example we haven't been over to visit Miguele
and Abetta, we haven't been over to visit Mombudo
and Kenyata and we haven't even been to our
friends in Pinehill. They always seem to come over
to our place. We haven't been to Riata's orphanage
in China. We should do that so we get a good feel
for the life Tlang has been through, and we have
not been to visit Sien. We now have nothing to
keep us at home, why don't we do that?"

"I like that honey. You're right. We no longer
have anything at home to keep us there. The boys
are now independent and don't need us. They'll be
fine. When we leave here let's go visit Miguele
and Abetta. When I look at what Mae and Susan are
doing and have done I think it's time we got out."

Sam laughed. "Can you believe that Susan? I
thought she would never get out, that she was just
a homebody. Now, here she is having walked all
over China, Tibet and down into India. Wow! I'm
proud of her."

"That's good, Sam Henry, because I wouldn't
change it even if you said so." Susan had walked
up to them from behind. Sam had not seen her and
she had obviously heard what he was saying.

In mock fear Sam put his hand over his mouth
and cowered down as if he was going to be struck.

Susan did strike him. They were long time good
solid friends and Sam was always teasing Susan.

Susan had been their neighbor ever since Sam
and Alewka as young marrieds had bought the house
next door. She had seen the family grow and
watched how Sam and Alewka had raised their kids.
She was proud to be a friend, a neighbor and a
helpmate to the Henrys. It was through the Henrys
that Susan came to live by higher law. Never in
her life had she experienced such joy and such
peace.

"What are you up to Sue? We haven't seen you
for quite some time."

"Mae and I have been all over, Sam. We loved
China so much we went back and are still just
walking around enjoying the people. We stop in to
see Riata once in a while. We even bring her kids,
once in a while. But mostly we are exploring. We
love it in China, Sam. The people are wonderful."

"Well, I am sure impressed with what you and
Mae are doing. I often wondered what you would do
once you found a whole new world out there. I'm
proud of you Susan Miles."

TOMORROW - - - Now what?

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Bachelor. Why is the college degree called a "bachelor's"
degree.

Because originally a "bachelor" was a soldier not old enough
or rich enough to lead his retainers into battle under his
own banner. Therefore, the word meant a person of inferior
rank. It was applied to the college degree in order to
differentiate it from the higher degree of "doctor."

Tomorrow - Cad. Why do we call a vulgar person a "cad"?

HA! HA! HA!

Thunderstorms have rolled through the region, knocking out
power temporarily to some of the stores of this supermarket
chain. So when a help desk technician gets an emergency page
from one store, he figures he knows how to handle it.

Turns out it's not that easy. "When I called the store, a
somewhat dippy cashier answered the phone," he says. "The
cash registers were all off-line, and when I gave her what I
thought were simple instructions to restart the registers, she
was having trouble understanding."

The flustered cashier just can't seem to get things working
-- until the tech gets an idea.

"At one point the phone clicked, and she told me it was an
incoming call on another line," he reports. "She clicked off
and answered again right away."

"I said hi, it's Mark from the help desk."

She said, "Oh, hi! I have another guy from the help desk on
the other line! Can you help me out? I don't understand what
he's telling me to do."

I replied, "That guy's name is Mark too, and he is the most
knowledgeable person in our department. Just take a deep
breath, calm down and let him help you get the registers
back up."

Another click.

"Hello, is this Mark? I just had that other Mark on the
other line. OK, now tell me again what I need to do..."
