If you cut an earthworm in half, will it grow into two new
worms?
How big can earthworms get?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What Greek playwright is said to have died from a skull
fracture when an eagle dropped a tortoise on his bald head?
Aeschylus. Legend says that the ancient Greek playwright's
bald head was mistaken for a rock by an eagle flying
overhead. The eagle dropped the tortoise onto his head in an
attempt to smash open the shell.
Why do earthworms come up out of the ground when it rains?
Simple, really, say some researchers. Earthworms breathe
air, just like we do. They CAN breathe water (they breathe
through their skin), but not for long periods of time. When
it rains and the ground fills with water, they have to come
out or they'd drown. Of course, they have to get back
underground before too long, or the hot sun could dry them
out, causing them to suffocate. Other scientists, however,
say the worm-drowning theory is bunk. They say worms can
live underground in water for weeks and speculate that the
reason that worms come out after it rains is to mate or to
look for different kinds of food. Since the rain has made
the surface moist and humid, they can move around freely
without fear of dehydrating.

Here's To Think On ...

------------------------------------
What Are Friends?
Have you ever noticed how things are more enjoyable when you
share them? Have you ever noticed how nice it is to have
someone to talk to when you want to talk? Have you ever
noticed how nice it is to be able to lean on someone when
you are tired and need an "ear" to listen and a "shoulder to
lean on"?
I guess that is what a friend is, a person who fits all
those things.
When one is first married life is pretty exciting. There is,
of course the sexual attraction thing, but there is also the
making of a life together. Things are busy. Kids come along
and things get busier yet. Life is rewarding, challenging
and offers many times circumstances to be overcome.
As time goes by life mellows out and challenges are not
quite so severe. Then is when you begin to notice your
partner in light of friendship rather than someone you live
with, a mother or father to your kids and your sex partner.
Some may think this is a sad time of life, when you look at
your partner as a friend more than a sex partner. In my
books it is one of the most cherished and rewarding periods
we go through. I, for one, can honestly tell you there is no
other person in the world I would rather have as a friend to
share things with than my partner.
Now, there are other friends too. There are those you meet
along the way with whom you have more than a passing
interest. You can share things with them as well and being
outside your daily living situation they can frequently
offer thoughts and ideas from objective points of view.
In that department I am more than fortunate. Indeed, I am a
rich man for I have friends whom I consider confidants, and
people for whom I would sacrifice and who would do the same
for me.
I miss these folks when I don't speak to them for a while.
They are always in my head and heart in terms of thoughts
and feelings and it is amazing how much I look forward to
impending contact with these people.
They add a joy to my life. They add meaning to my life.
They, often, in all ways become my "Board of Directors".
I had a friend go away the other day, caught up in some
family business and I could not believe how much I missed
that friend. I am glad the friend is back, if only to make
contact again.
These are some of the things friends mean to me. There may
be other things friends mean to you, yet, if you are able to
enjoy them in light of these things you are most fortunate.
I have heard it said that if you are fortunate enough to
have one friend you are a rich person. I believe it.
A friend can enrich your life to a point of euphoria. A
friend can help sustain the richness of life just by being
there. A friend can add meaning to life without which there
is only a deep dark hole.
Take time to ask yourself ...
What Are Friends?

Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
PART 2 of 12
What changed my mind? I saw the effects of medications on
elderly people, who I thought was drugged into "unreality".
I also watched many people die of diseases at a relatively
young age. I saw many older people go on happily well into
their nineties. I asked myself what the difference could be.
Your personal experiences have very strong ways of
"trapping" your attention, especially if it's your own body
telling you to wake up. Suddenly, hearing about the need to
protect or rebuild your immune system takes on a totally
different meaning.
Suddenly you feel connected. It doesn't sound so unreal any
more. As is so often the case, things don't matter until you
are personally faced with a major and maybe life-threatening
situation for yourself or a loved one. It was at such a
stage, that I was introduced to understanding how
degenerative diseases could be slowed down and what I could
personally do the prevent them.
These days, my life revolves around explaining how the
immune system works, how it has broken down, and why you
really need to keep it healthy. This is not some far off
ethereal, wishy-washy, "tip toe through the tulips" concept.
It is a very practical choice you have to make consciously,
and apply to your health NOW. We have made giant steps in
understanding our bodies: how they die (slowly and
painfully) and how to keep them alive (happily and
healthily). Ponder this...why do some people live healthily
till they die and why so others limp along painfully to a
sad ending? Why wouldn't we all die the same way?

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

"Just a visit. We no longer have commitments
at home and are free to move about. We haven't
been here since you two got married so we thought
we would come for a visit. We are already glad we
did."
"That's terrific, Sam. Glad you came. We're
having a hot spell right now but that shouldn't
bother you. Don't mind the noise from these kids.
We are on the front end of that chore, not on the
back end like you two. We enjoy it though. And
Papa here, Miguele, keeps bringing us more kids.
They just seem to naturally find their way here or
to our place. That's okay. We'll look after them
all." Romano laughed. "We have so many now I don't
think Mama here wants any more of our own." He
laughed again.
This time it was Oomano's turn to poke some
ribs, and likewise, Romano's turn to jump. "Yeah,
but he sure doesn't want to stop trying."
They all laughed at this inside joke.
"Romano, Sam and I were just about to go down
to the shrine and see what is happening. Sam
hasn't seen it for near on seven years. Would you
like to come?"
Romano looked at Oomano. He loved her so
deeply and they had established such a partnership
that he wouldn't even think of leaving her without
her permission.
"Go ahead you big goof. You don't need my
permission." She knew she would always give it and
she appreciated very much that he just didn't up
and leave. It was little things like this that let
her know he loved her. They both acted this way,
never doing things on their own without the other
knowing in advance.
That kind of thing is an enviable condition,
though somewhat impractical in man's world. One
can try but so often fail that sometimes one in a
couple just has to act alone. That is where trust
comes into a marriage. So long as both in the
marriage are always headed toward the family goals
it usually works out fine.
Looking at each other, the three men vanished,
leaving the three women and the kids. Abetta gave
the kids each a little sweet drink and they headed
out to the back yard to play. They were already
self sustaining and not much work for Oomano, so
she had time to visit.
"It is nice to have you here, Alewka. I'm glad
you came to visit. How long have you been here?"
"We arrived this morning, just before lunch. I
think we'll stay for a couple days if your folks
will let us." She winked at Oomano.
"Certainly we will. You tease." Abetta's
reaction was predictable.
The ladies walked into the kitchen and cleaned
up after the meal the old fashioned was. It was a
way they could do something yet still visit.
Sam, Romano and Miguele set down in Matto
Grosso about three blocks from the shrine. From
there they walked as if tourists. Since the last
time Sam was here the streets had become filled
with hawkers and peddlers, as well as with those
wanting to attend the shrine. The city had done
nothing to keep these hawkers out, so it had now
become almost an obstacle course for those wanting
to visit the shrine.
As they neared the shrine Sam noticed the same
regular businesses were still there and they were
still thriving. That, of course, is why the
hawkers moved in, money. They saw the regular
merchants doing fine as a result of the crowds and
they wanted a piece of the action.
So now it was a circus on the way to the
shrine. Where, at one time, there was a reverence
that spread for blocks around, the time that had
passed had gradually permitted the hawkers and
panhandlers to encroach upon the scene. Sam did
notice, however, that the kids had kept the last
block before the shrine clear of them. They did
that by setting up a shield that kept them out,
not forcibly, but just some unknown force kept the
hawkers away. That gave worshippers at least a
little while to calm down from the competitive run
to the shrine.
Once inside this protected block, Sam noticed,
too, that things became quiet, more serene. Yes
there was human movement and conversation, but it
was subdued. As people approached the shrine they
became almost mesmerized with their own
expectations. It was known far and wide this was a
most holy of places and it put people into a
trance like state even before they set eyes on the
shrine.
As you might expect, the Catholic Church found
they were not able to control the events at the
shrine, neither have the benefit of the money
visitors left, so they did at least recognize the
shrine and outside the block radius, had set up
little "holy places", one in each direction from
the shrine. At these "holy places" they would have
a priest who would encourage visitors to stay and
talk about their experience at the shrine. In each
and every case they would align themselves with
the great power of God and the shrine. A
collection plate was conveniently left at the
entranceway just in case people wanted to favor
the church. It sucked much money out of the
unsuspecting.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Easy as A.B.C. Why do we say that something easy is "as easy
as A.B.C."?
Because the school children of early England, given a
hornbook and told to read it, found the first part of it the
easiest - for then they only had to read off the letters of
the alphabet. There is no easier reading.
Tomorrow: Faction. Where did we get the word "faction"
