What organ gradually diminishes in size throughout a
person's life?

The thymus, a small organ in the center of the chest
underneath the breastbone, gets smaller and smaller as a
person ages. It attains its largest size at the time of
puberty, when it ceases to grow, gradually dwindles, and
almost disappears. At birth it weighs about 15 grams, at
puberty it weighs about 35 grams; after this it gradually
decreases to 25 grams at twenty-five years, less than 15
grams at sixty, and about 6 grams at seventy years. When the
thymus is removed from adult mammals, few effects are seen.
However, when the thymus is removed at birth, dramatic
effects are witnessed. What, exactly, does the thymus do?
Scientists believe it plays a critical role in immunity.
They used to believe the thymus stopped functioning after
puberty, but research has since suggested it does not,
although its influence on the immune system decreases.

What British warrior queen successfully defended her people
against the Romans?

Boudicca (also know as Boadicea), was the wife of
Prasutagus, king of the Iceni, a tribe living in what is
currently Suffolk and Norfolk, England. When Prasutagus died
in 60 A.D., the Romans took advantage of the tribe's
vulnerability and seized the territory, brutalizing the
inhabitants. Boudicca, whose name is derived from a Celtic
word meaning "victorious," was not going to sit idly by and
watch. She gathered together a large army and, in 61 A.D.,
led her troops to destroy the Roman colony of Camulodunum.
Boudicca's warriors then set fire to Londinium (London) and
sacked Verulamium (St. Albans) and numerous other Roman
settlements, putting to death as many as 70,000 Romans and
Romanized Brits. She was successful in liberating her
people, but unfortunately her victories were temporary. The
following year, the Romans defeated her in battle and she
died. Her final end is uncertain. Some say she was killed in
battle, others that she died of illness shortly thereafter,
or - the most popular version - that she and her two
daughters poisoned themselves to avoid capture.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW!™

---------------------

A Good Idea!

One of the great challenges in life is to stay focused and
not to go madly off in all directions. It makes so much
sense, doesn't it? How is it, then, that most people do not
find it easy to stay on track with their goals? After all,
they chose their goals, so they must be appealing!

There are many answers to it, no doubt. The important thing
for today is to find your particular answer to that
question. Is it difficult for you to stay focused on your
goals? How much prompting does it take for you to abandon
what you are doing and do something else? What is it about
that "something else" that is so appealing? What is it
about your goal that is not appealing enough, perhaps? Big
questions.

Avoidance can be a big issue, can't it? Often we call it
procrastination, however, it really is avoidance. When
there is a task to do, we often find ourselves deciding to
clean our desk, make unnecessary phone calls, or, even
counting all the staples in that little box just to be sure
there really are 1,000. It is often a good idea to take
stock when this happens...and I do not mean of those little
staples! We want to do things we love to do. We'll even do
some very unpleasant things to achieve a desired result...if
this were not true, who would undergo cosmetic dentistry or
liposuction?

Walt Disney had some good advice. He said, "Get a good idea
and stick with it. Dog it, and work at it until it's done
and done right." So, the point is, if you are focused on
what you REALLY want, you may have to remind yourself that
that task that seems unappealing is really your ticket to
your dreams. Pay for it!

For today, reaffirm your goals. Make sure they truly
reflect what you want. Sit with each of your goals--read it
out loud, close your eyes, see how your body reacts to each.
Goals that truly light you up and/or contribute to your
sense of well-being and peace are the ones to focus on. Keep
the others for another time...or release them completely.

Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
PART 6 of 12

We will use the term Immune System "generally" to describe
all the protective systems of the body. This system is made
up of a variety of defense mechanisms including antibodies,
which have very specific functions. We also don't often
think in terms of the skin and digestive tract (mucous
membranes, saliva, stomach juices) spleen, etc.,) being
connected to this, but they also play very important roles.
An example of the defense mechanism with "local parts" is
the inflammatory system or response. This is one of the MOST
important defenses you can have. Guard it carefully.

Here is a very simplistic explanation of the "inflammatory
process". You step on a nail. Immediately the body
recognizes this as an abnormal "invasion" and sends out the
inflammatory process to get rid of the invader(s). In this
case, it would be an increase of fluid, including large
amounts of white blood cells. This fluid will remain there
until the healing is complete or until some other process
(antibiotics) takes over. Then it stays to counteract the
antibiotics (drugs/chemicals). The volume of this fluid
causes its own problems as the pressure causes pain and
distortion of the area's anatomy. And when this process is
also active in places like the ear, brain, or eye, because
of limited space, it will cause additional problems. Its
purpose is to wash the toxins out of the area.

There is the body-wide response in the form of the lymphatic
system. As well, the immune system has many organs that will
either protect or not accept free radicals or intruders.
Your sinuses will protect you by filtering out certain
chemicals. Your stomach will "return" unwanted items. Your
eyelids will block out unwanted light. Your nose will make
you aware of undesirable smells and you can cover your nose
or turn away. Knowing we have such powerful protection
available to us, it scares me when someone calls and tells
me that certain very invasive procedures are to be done. On
further questioning, it's obvious that the symptoms are very
uncomfortable or debilitating. And that's fine, but WHY are
those symptoms there? What is your body trying to protect
you FROM? From what you have already read, wouldn't you now
be asking a different question?

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

They sat down to eat. The meal was a western
meal this time, more along the lines of Sam and
Alewka's regular fare.

The conversation was sparse. Each was basking
in the love that was present. Each was pondering
the significance of this day as it pertained to
the rest of their lives.

Sam Henry did not have to wait long for the
church to get into action. The priest he made eye
contact with went straight to the authorities to
report what had happened. The news got up to the
cardinal the same day.

The man was angered. Ever since he was put
into that position the shrine had been a vexation
to his soul. He was well aware of what happened to
the last cardinal but some time had passed and he
thought that whatever force that was to cause the
church so much trouble would now be long gone. He
was, after all, the head of the church in this
region and did not even civic governments do his
bidding? He was all powerful in the area.

So, to his mind, he could do anything. He well
knew there were hundreds of people who would do
anything he said if he couched it in the right
terms and there were those who would do anything
if he said they were absolved of any sin. Indeed,
he could even reward them and lead them to think
they were on God's business.

He spent the night with drink. Then he called
his favorite nun and began to drink with her.
Before long they were lustfully involved and
sated their passions before she went back to her
residence. He continued to drink and scheme.

The shrine had taken in what he considered to
be millions during the time he was in office. It
was his plan to put in place the four "Holy
places" next to the shrine and it had developed an
amazing amount of revenue. That was good, as far
as he was concerned. The church attendance never
had come back up to what it once was and this
additional revenue, plus a hassle free region,
looked good to Rome.

Yet he was personally vexed. In his mind, no
one went against the church, no one. There was
always a way to have the church win out, on any
issue, no matter what it was.

It became plain the whiskey was doing more
thinking than the cardinal. He continued to plot.
He knew the city fathers would be of no help. He
had worked with them to get traffic going to the
area. After all he wanted his "Holy places" raking
in cash. To take away or to do anything that
diminished traffic at the shrine would only harm
his own income. "Yeah, what income" he spoke
aloud. This man has come by and all four of my
outlets tell me that as of a given hour not one
person has dropped in. If that continues the
revenue will dry up entirely and we'll again be
back in trouble.

The cardinal was becoming more agitated all
the time. He drank himself into a stupor and
around two in the morning fell asleep over his
desk. Moving to get comfortable, he fell out of
the chair and onto the floor where he remained
until his aid came in the morning.

He awoke with a hangover that only aggravated
him the more. He was in a terrible mood and by
noon, after he had received a report from the
"Holy places" he was angered for revenge.
What could he do? The only thing he could
think of was again making some kind of attempt to
take over the shrine. He knew that had been tried
but he did not consider his predecessor to be
quite as brilliant as he. He would come up with a
plan, somehow.

The following day, Sam knew the cardinal had
called in a subservient person with whom he had
plotted. He advised the man that in performing
this act in God's service he would forever be
absolved of any guilt from whatever he did or
would do. God would actually look upon him with
favor. Further he would be handsomely paid upon
completion of his task. The idea was to find the
man who had the power to keep people away from the
church revenue spots, and kill him.

Sam knew the plan, the man, and where he
should be at what time in order to make the task
easy for the man. He went alone for the meeting.
Alewka had hugged him before he left. "Be careful,
honey."

Sam spotted the man long before the man knew
he was even in the area. Sam had rendered himself
invisible. As the man was walking along he was
holding onto a weapon in his pocket. The man was a
novice with firearms. Sam tripped him. The man
fell and the gun went off in his pocket. The
bullet lodged in his own leg and he was writhing
in pain on the street.

Soon there were sirens. Police and ambulance
arrived at nearly the same time. The police
quickly came upon the man and held him, keeping
him hostage from his weapon. They removed the
weapon and then searched him for more. All the
while the man was in shock, losing blood and
attempting to free himself.

The ambulance crew sedated him and tied him
into a stretcher, then rushed him away.

TOMORROW - - - Greed of the church comes through

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Idiot. Has the word "idiot" always meant a mentally
deficient person?

No. The word is Greek and at first an "idiot" was just a
private citizen who held no public office. However, since
the Greeks considered it a great honor to hold office, the
word finally came to mean a person who couldn't take part in
public affairs.

Tomorrow: Jack Robinson: What is the origin of the expression "before
you can say Jack Robinson"?

HA! HA! HA!

A Russian scientist and a Czechoslovakian scientist had
spent their lives studying the grizzly bear. Each year they
petitioned their respective governments to allow them to go
to Yellowstone to study the bears.

Finally their request was granted, and they immediately flew
to Yellowstone.

They reported to the ranger station and were told that it
was the grizzly mating season and it was too dangerous to go
out and study the animals.

They pleaded that this was their only chance, and finally
the ranger relented. The Russian and the Czech were given
portable phones and told to report in every day.

For several days they called in, and then nothing was heard
from the two scientists.

The rangers mounted a search party and found the camp
completely ravaged, with no sign of the missing men.
Following the trails of a male and a female bear, they
finally caught up with the female. Fearing an international
incident, they decided they must kill the animal to find out
if she had eaten the scientist. They killed the female and
opened the stomach to find the remains of the Russian.

One ranger turned to the other and said, " You know what
this means, don't you?"

The other ranger responded . . .

"I guess it means the Czech's in the male."
