What disease might Michelangelo's "Night" be suffering from?
Oncologist and medical school professor James Stark says he
believes that the model for Michelangelo's allegorical
statue "Night" suffered from advanced breast cancer. The
statue, of a reclining woman with pendulous breasts, resides
in the Medici Chapel in Florence, Italy. The doctor spied
what he believes is evidence of a tumor in the left breast
of the statue. He and art historian Jonathan Nelson are
researching the work and the history of breast cancer
treatment. Nelson and Stark (who notes that he's been
identifying cancer "my whole life") suggest that
Michelangelo "carefully inspected a woman with advanced
breast cancer and accurately reproduced the physical signs
in stone."

Coke and Pepsi told to spill secrets or face ban
From Ashling O'Connor in Bombay
INDIAS highest court yesterday demanded that Coca-Cola
should reveal its secret formula for the first time in 120
years.
The Supreme Court ordered the US soft drinks maker, along
with its rival PepsiCo, to supply details of the chemical
composition and ingredients of their products after a study
released this week claimed that they contained unacceptable
levels of insecticides.
Justice S. B. Sinha and Justice Dalveer Bhandari directed
the companies to file their replies within four weeks, the
Press Trust of India reported. If they dont comply, then
the court has the authority to suspend sales, Shreyas
Patel, a lawyer at Fox Mandal Little, Indias oldest law
firm, said. But no one is going to give away a 120-year-old
secret, especially in a country like India. Someone would go
and make it themselves.
Coca-Colas original recipe, according to company policy, is
kept in a bank vault in Atlanta where only two executives
banned from travelling on the same aircraft know it.
The court order followed the release of a report by the
Centre for Science and Environment, a non-government body,
which contended that 11 brands sold by the two soft drinks
makers contained high levels of pesticide residues. The
organisation said that samples from 12 states showed that
Pepsi products contained 30 times more pesticides than in
2003, when a similar study was conducted. Coke samples had
25 times the amount of pesticides as three years ago.
The report, published on Wednesday, caused a row in Indias
lower house, where MPs from across the political spectrum
brandished its findings as reason enough to ban the sale of
Coca-Cola and Pepsi. These companies are playing with the
lives of millions and we cant ignore such warnings any
more, said Vijay Kumar Malhotra, from the main opposition
Bharatiya Janata Party, which staged a walkout over the
issue .
It is not the first time Coca-Cola and Pepsi have found
themselves mired in controversy in India. They are regular
whipping boys for politicians who regard Western food
products as a threat to Indian heritage, although sceptics
suggest that their opposition has more to do with the
companies virtual monopoly of the market than genuinely
held feelings of cultural protectionism.
The US companies joined forces through the Indian Soft Drink
Manufacturers Association to reject the findings of the
study. Consumer safety is paramount to us, they said. The
soft drinks manufactured in India comply with stringent
international norms and all applicable national
regulations.
The Bureau of Indian Standards, the highest government body
to maintain product quality certification, has set a
pesticide standard for bottled water but not for soft
drinks.
In 2003, at the time of the last report, pesticide claims
provoked a backlash. Schools banned colas, and fruit juice
sales boomed as yoga gurus reminded people of the value of
healthy drinking. Coca-Colas sales dropped by as much as 11
per cent in the subsequent financial quarter.

A Few Thoughts To Share On Hormones
And Their Actions
PART 4 of 22
Your blood pressure will most likely never be the
120/80 reading. Common sense dictates that sometimes it
changes. AND it does that all day long. That is normal
too. There is much you can do to deal with high blood
pressure (hypertension) before you need to resort to
drugs which are more chemicals being distributed
throughout your body. Another big problem I see, and
this leads me back to the hormone issue, is that many
people have low blood pressure. Low pressure will slow
down the distribution of items in the blood stream.
And it will also make the blood more sluggish. Two of
the major components of blood are oxygen and nutrients.
And a low blood pressure will not deliver these
adequately. That might result in light headedness,
fatigue, or dizziness. If your blood pressure is low,
would it not follow that all your hormones might not be
delivered in a timely fashion? Again just think about
these issues.
Now Lets Cover The Actual Hormones
Hormones are chemical messengers. Most go directly into
your bloodstream. Their job is to regulate your bodys
activities and its chemistry: hence the messenger role
term. It is important to remember that all of these
hormones work in unison and interact. Nothing in your
body works in isolation. I often tell people that your
blood doesnt just go to one area: it connects to every
cell in your body, all day and all night long.
The major glands that make up the human endocrine
system are the pituitary, hypothalamus, thyroid,
parathyroid, pancreas, adrenals, and the ones of lesser
importance include the pineal body, and the
reproductive glands (gonads), which include the ovaries
and testes. There are also some digestive ones, but
they pertain to the digestive system. Here are some
sites to give you more detailed information.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.
-----------------------END DISCLAIMER
I have often wondered what was in Coke and Pepsi. According
to our title article today the Indian government is
concerned that it may be more than sugar water. They are
calling for a disclosure of the recipes.
They are claiming there are insecticides or pesticides in
regular bottles or cans of these products, apparently more
than 30 times the safe level.
I find that hard to believe. I think other governments will
check it out as well. However, it is probable the bottlers
were using water that may contain those elements. We will
watch the outcome.
Please understand I am no lover of Coke or Pepsi, in fact no
soft drink for I feel they do much damage to ones body. But
I really wouldn't think Coke or Pepsi would do that as it
would jeopardize their business all over the world. That is
to say I don't trust them, however, I do trust the greed
motive and I don't think they would do such a thing at such
high risk. Do they care about their customers - not one wit.
So it will be interesting to see what the outcome will be
with this story. They may well be advised they cannot sell
their product in India, the second most densely populated
country on the map and one in a hot climate area.
Remember, you don't have to drink these products. There are
other ways to maintain healthy living.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Yellow Press: How did the term "yellow press" come to be
applied to newspapers specializing in sensationalism?
It's because in the late 1800's these papers began printing
sensational articles about "Yellow Peril" the ever
increasing Chinese and Japanese population - which they said
threatened the safety of the white race.
