What are Canopic jars?
Canopic jars were stone vessels that were used to store,
preserve, and protect a mummy's organs. Generally, the dead
person's liver, stomach, lungs, and intestines were removed.
The heart, believed to be the seat of consciousness and
feeling (equivalent to the brain today), was not removed as
it was considered too essential to be separated from the
body. The brain was also sometimes removed and the empty
skull cavity stuffed with resin. Canopic jars were generally
four in number and depicted gods. The lungs would be stored
in a jar representing Hapi (a baboon); the stomach in a jar
depicting Duametefla (a dog); the liver in a jar
representing Imseti (a human); and the intestines in a jar
depicting Qebehsenuef (a falcon).
What toy was banned by the Pentagon?
The Furby. In 1999, when the toys were a huge hit and even
adults were taking them to work, the Pentagon and the
National Security Agency banned them. The fear was that the
toys, which talked and were said to "learn" English, could
be used to collect top-secret information. In fact, the toys
do not record or mimic voices and are not spies!

In 1958, the Crayola crayon color "Prussian Blue" was
changed to "Midnight Blue" by the request of teachers as
kids could not relate to Prussian history.

Around The Net
When I saw Mel Gibson's The Passion, I was moved by his
accomplishment. He made Jesus' sufferings visceral, which is
a feat no other filmmaker was willing or able to do. But as
I walked out of that theater, I recalled Gibson's portrayal
of the Pharisees, the way the camera would linger on their
faces. In Gibson's movie, the faces of the Pharisees were
much more "Jewish" than the others. The faces in the crowd,
those of the Apostles, and of Mary, they could have been
Greek. They could have been Latin, but there was no
mistaking the Semitic appearance of the men that demanded
Jesus' crucifixion. In Gibson's movie, we weren't only
looking at Jesus' murderers. We were supposed to link them
with Fagan, Shylock, the moneylenders, the studio heads, the
lawyers, and all the other "evils" that Jews have supposedly
been at the root of.
Poor Mel Gibson. Like many people, he just can't shake the
anti-Semitic mindset. It gets ingrained, and as we saw last
week in Malibu, under pressure, bigots revert to type. Like
any other drug, bigotry simplifies the world and comforts
the mind. It's like alcohol, and we've all known plenty of
people who can't lay off the sauce: "Jews are this . . .
Jews are that . . . Jews are always. . . " Then comes the
apology, "Don't get me wrong, some of my best friends are .
. ."
Thus, after seeing The Passion, I was not at all surprised
by Gibson's meltdown. The meltdown wasn't caused by
drinking. It was caused by his anger at those he believes
hold sway over him. Mel is not alone. In any society, when a
minority subgroup prospers and does well for itself, people
get leery. It's easy to have compassion for the downtrodden,
or extend sympathy to the hungry and homeless. But when a
minority rises and obtains a degree of power, masters
skills, finds a niche and excels, the majority feels
threatened. And if the group does all this while maintaining
a tradition and culture that is older and richer than our
own, we may even feel a little envious. We begin to resent
the opportunities and strengths that a close-knit community
can offer, and ascribe every success to a conspiratorial,
scheming clannishness.
Like America, Mel Gibson is steeped in religion, but can't
find a home for his soul. Like America, Mel Gibson is
successful and free and full of privilege, but chooses to
embrace a faith that thrives on exclusion, that reflexively
seeks dominance over others. And like millions of other
worshippers who kneel at the altar but can't look their
neighbor in the eye, Mel's faith has left him lonely, scared
and baffled by a world that will never see everything his
way, never be a proper mirror for his own reflection, even
though he thinks it should.

A Few Thoughts To Share On Hormones
And Their Actions
PART 8 of 22
Thyroid hormones also play a key role in bone growth
and the development of the brain and nervous system in
children. The production and release of thyroid
hormones is controlled by thyrotropin which is secreted
by the pituitary gland, as opposed to the thyroid
gland. Can you see how interrelated your bodys
workings are? These messengers constantly work as a
team to rebalance the chemicals in all of your body.
Parathyroid glands are like four little buttons
attached to the front of the thyroid gland. These
function together and are called the parathyroids. They
release the parathormone hormone, which, with the help
of thyrocalcitonin (from the thyroid gland), regulates
the level of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. This
has to do with electrolyte balance. This system is
essential for the chemical functioning of your body.
Know that your body craves balance. This is the system
that maintains it and this is called homeostasis.
Two common problems in your body that can create this
imbalance are too much salt and too little potassium.
Too much salt causes fluid to be retained in your body,
most often in your legs, and is identified as swelling.
It can also cause fluids to be retained in your lungs,
causing respiratory distress. This imbalance is
often corrected by drawing off the fluid. However, this
might then cause a depletion of potassium that goes
along with the salt (sodium). A low potassium level can
lead to slow heart rates, weakness, and lack of
motivation. It may also cause arrhythmias (abnormal
heart beats) because of chemical imbalances that may be
caused in the hearts electrical system.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.
-----------------------END DISCLAIMER
Earlier in the week I encouraged you to take a look at this
days title article because it touches at the core of
difficulties experienced by over 90% of the population of
North America.
Oh! I know there are literally thousands of you out there
who will disagree with me even vehemently. Yet the more
vocal and the more vehement you become the closer this truth
is to you.
The sad truth is the church and society attempt to raise you
with ideals of human behavior that, really, hardly ever
exist. The hardest lesson to learn after finishing school is
the lesson of reality which, in nearly every part of life,
is opposed to the way you were taught to think.
I know some of you say you were raised the hard way, with
the "Boy named Sue" approach and therefore have a good grasp
on reality from the beginning. I know some of you were
raised on the "wrong side of the tracks" and therefore had
all the vicious, idiotic ways of "upper crust" society
imposed upon you at an early age.
All these things send people searching for a better world,
for a better life. And they find lots of opportunities in
which their searching can settle. Some draw the conclusion
that money is the answer. Others end up in the camp of
religion, and some of those are extremist, like the Jones
group who all committed suicide at the churches bidding.
Still others, and this is a very large group, see religion
as their way out. They attend their church for years until
it becomes seen as a habit, that the church, in truth,
really offers them nothing, except maybe the company of
others who seem to think it's great.
Ultimately the church offers nothing in exchange for the
money it expects of you. Worse, it actually teaches you
things other than what the real teachers say is to be
taught.
Some, the fortunate ones, break off and begin to investigate
secular literature in pursuit of a search for the answers to
life. This will lead them into a completely new world of
traps and detours by the names of "psychics", "miracles",
"forecasting", "extra sensory perception", "occult",
"mysteries", "horoscopes", "astronomy" and all sorts of
things they had not the inclination to look at before.
Only a few will be discerning enough to see and understand
"straight is the gate and narrow is the way".
The real truth is that the truth is so simple mankind
refuses to see and believe. He has long been trained to
think there must be some mystery, some complicated thing,
that he will go all his life refusing to accept the simple
truth of how our Maker set up the world to function by some
laws we can all learn and in doing so will come to enjoy
peace, prosperity and power.
Peace, prosperity, power, direction all come from inside the
breast of each individual. Those who take the time to become
silent and still both their body and mind so they can see,
will have the amazing reward of having life turn out the way
they always wanted. Those who refuse to take this route will
suffer at the hands of the laws our Maker put in place.
For those of you who are deeply into this study already, I
ask that you consider the personal pronoun "Maker" to be the
universal force that controls all. You may call it whatever
you wish. I have simply chosen to call it your "Maker" for
it is truly that if nothing else.
When your time comes, like Mel Gibson, where you are so
frustrated with the "system" and the control thereof by
certain groups, then you, too, can blow off steam, get
drunk, begin name calling, turn arrogant and offensive, OR,
you can wake up and go inside for answers, where you will
find truth, power, peace and prosperity. Your choice.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Accost: What is the reason a person who speaks to you
without introduction is said to "accost" you?
It's because he usually sidles up to you. The Latin word for
"side" is costa- and "accost" literally means "at the side".
