What mammal has the largest brain?
The sperm whale is the mammal with the largest brain. Its
brain can weigh as much as 20 pounds. The blue whale has a
larger body size, but its brain is about 5 pounds lighter.
How many presidents' sons have become president themselves?
President George W. Bush is only the second son of a US
president to follow his father's footsteps into the White
House. But he's hardly alone in having a former president in
his family tree. According to Family Tree Magazine, 100
million Americans boast some sort of presidential roots. The
publication says almost anyone with New England ancestry is
probably connected to dozens of US presidents. Those with
Quaker or Southern roots also have a good chance. Bush
follows John Quincy Adams, son of John Adams, as a
presidential offspring also elected to the White House.
Benjamin Harrison is the only grandson of a president
(William Henry Harrison) ever elected president.
Other presidential pedigrees:
-- George Washington, the father of our country, had no
direct descendants: smallpox in his youth may have left him
sterile.
-- Franklin Roosevelt was a distant cousin of Theodore's,
and his wife Eleanor was TR's niece. So she was the only
first lady who didn't change her last name at marriage,
since she was already a Roosevelt.
-- John Adams, Ulysses S. Grant and FDR all had ancestors
who sailed on the Mayflower.
-- You may have the best odds of being descended from
little-known President John Tyler, who fathered 15 children,
the most of any chief executive.
-- Don't try claiming to be a direct ancestor of James
Buchanan; he was the only bachelor president.

Refuse to be Terrorized
By Bruce Schneier|
On Aug. 16, two men were escorted off a plane headed for
Manchester, England, because some passengers thought they
looked either Asian or Middle Eastern, might have been
talking Arabic, wore leather jackets, and looked at their
watches -- and the passengers refused to fly with them on
board.
The men were questioned for several hours and then released.
On Aug. 15, an entire airport terminal was evacuated because
someone's cosmetics triggered a false positive for
explosives. The same day, a Muslim man was removed from an
airplane in Denver for reciting prayers. The Transportation
Security Administration decided that the flight crew
overreacted, but he still had to spend the night in Denver
before flying home the next day.
The next day, a Port of Seattle terminal was evacuated
because a couple of dogs gave a false alarm for explosives.
On Aug. 19, a plane made an emergency landing in Tampa,
Florida, after the crew became suspicious because two of the
lavatory doors were locked. The plane was searched, but
nothing was found. Meanwhile, a man who tampered with a
bathroom smoke detector on a flight to San Antonio was
cleared of terrorism, but only after having his house
searched.
On Aug. 16, a woman suffered a panic attack and became
violent on a flight from London to Washington, so the plane
was escorted to the Boston airport by fighter jets. "The
woman was carrying hand cream and matches but was not a
terrorist threat," said the TSA spokesman after the
incident.
And on Aug. 18, a plane flying from London to Egypt made an
emergency landing in Italy when someone found a bomb threat
scrawled on an air sickness bag. Nothing was found on the
plane, and no one knows how long the note was on board.
I'd like everyone to take a deep breath and listen for a
minute.
The point of terrorism is to cause terror, sometimes to
further a political goal and sometimes out of sheer hatred.
The people terrorists kill are not the targets; they are
collateral damage. And blowing up planes, trains, markets or
buses is not the goal; those are just tactics.
The real targets of terrorism are the rest of us: the
billions of us who are not killed but are terrorized because
of the killing. The real point of terrorism is not the act
itself, but our reaction to the act.
And we're doing exactly what the terrorists want.
We're all a little jumpy after the recent arrest of 23
terror suspects in Great Britain. The men were reportedly
plotting a liquid-explosive attack on airplanes, and both
the press and politicians have been trumpeting the story
ever since.
In truth, it's doubtful that their plan would have
succeeded; chemists have been debunking the idea since it
became public. Certainly the suspects were a long way off
from trying: None had bought airline tickets, and some
didn't even have passports.
Regardless of the threat, from the would-be bombers'
perspective, the explosives and planes were merely tactics.
Their goal was to cause terror, and in that they've
succeeded.
Imagine for a moment what would have happened if they had
blown up 10 planes. There would be canceled flights, chaos
at airports, bans on carry-on luggage, world leaders talking
tough new security measures, political posturing and all
sorts of false alarms as jittery people panicked. To a
lesser degree, that's basically what's happening right now.
Our politicians help the terrorists every time they use fear
as a campaign tactic. The press helps every time it writes
scare stories about the plot and the threat. And if we're
terrified, and we share that fear, we help. All of these
actions intensify and repeat the terrorists' actions, and
increase the effects of their terror.
(I am not saying that the politicians and press are
terrorists, or that they share any of the blame for
terrorist attacks. I'm not that stupid. But the subject of
terrorism is more complex than it appears, and understanding
its various causes and effects are vital for understanding
how to best deal with it.)
The implausible plots and false alarms actually hurt us in
two ways. Not only do they increase the level of fear, but
they also waste time and resources that could be better
spent fighting the real threats and increasing actual
security. I'll bet the terrorists are laughing at us.
Another thought experiment: Imagine for a moment that the
British government arrested the 23 suspects without fanfare.
Imagine that the TSA and its European counterparts didn't
engage in pointless airline-security measures like banning
liquids. And imagine that the press didn't write about it
endlessly, and that the politicians didn't use the event to
remind us all how scared we should be. If we'd reacted that
way, then the terrorists would have truly failed.
It's time we calm down and fight terror with antiterror.
This does not mean that we simply roll over and accept
terrorism. There are things our government can and should do
to fight terrorism, most of them involving intelligence and
investigation -- and not focusing on specific plots.
But our job is to remain steadfast in the face of terror, to
refuse to be terrorized. Our job is to not panic every time
two Muslims stand together checking their watches. There are
approximately 1 billion Muslims in the world, a large
percentage of them not Arab, and about 320 million Arabs in
the Middle East, the overwhelming majority of them not
terrorists. Our job is to think critically and rationally,
and to ignore the cacophony of other interests trying to use
terrorism to advance political careers or increase a
television show's viewership.
The surest defense against terrorism is to refuse to be
terrorized. Our job is to recognize that terrorism is just
one of the risks we face, and not a particularly common one
at that. And our job is to fight those politicians who use
fear as an excuse to take away our liberties and promote
security theater that wastes money and doesn't make us any
safer.

A Few Thoughts To Share On Hormones
And Their Actions
PART 18 of 22
Problem conditions for sugar disorders: Diabetes is the
major disorder of the pancreas. It represents an
imbalance of blood sugar levels. Diabetes occurs when
the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (Type 1)
or the body is resistant to the insulin in the blood
(Type 2). Without enough insulin to keep glucose (fuel)
moving through the metabolic process, the blood glucose
level rises too high. In Type 1 diabetes, a patient
must take insulin shots. Their pancreas is not
producing insulin or in such small amounts, that it
doesn't really have any affect. In Type 2 diabetes, a
patient may not necessarily need insulin and can
sometimes control blood sugar levels with exercise,
diet and other medications. This condition would have
developed over time and insulin production may be
chronically short. In order not to take any drugs, the
person would be advised to cut back on normal eating
habits and change to foods low in sugar. A word of
warning. Before you buy any artificial sweeteners,
please do research on them. They can be
problematic. We have advertising that leads us to
believe they are healthy, but they are more chemicals.
Sometimes a condition called hyperinsulinemia (HI) is
caused by too much insulin and leads to hypoglycemia
(low blood sugar). Symptoms of low blood sugar include
anxiety, sweating, increased heart rate, weakness,
hunger, and light-headedness. Low blood sugar
stimulates release of epinephrine, glucagon and growth
hormone, which help to return the blood sugar to
normal. Although the endocrine glands are the body's
main hormone producers, some non-endocrine organs -
such as the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, liver,
thymus, skin, and placenta - also produce and release
hormones. Again we see the interactions of all body
systems and the effect of one part of your body can
have on a part "far removed", as in the pituitary gland
influencing the pancreas near the stomach.
Please realize that this information on the pancreas is
only an overview and should be researched much
further.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.
-----------------------END DISCLAIMER
I am certainly glad to read today's article. It is the kind
of thing I have been saying all along and I am happy to have
company.
Imagine, if you will, a world where a terrorist's tactics
did not work. I found this out when I was 10 or 12. I used
to get teased a lot back then. My reaction was to fight, or
run home or attempt to tease back. None or those things
worked. I had no relief until one day I just decided I would
carry on as if there were no teasing. Guess what happened?
Once they were getting no reaction my antagonizers went
looking for something else to do and that was the end of the
whole thing.
So, too, would it have a similar effect on terrorists if we
quit being "terrorized". Think on that.
Moreover, I recommend you become angry when your local
politician begins to trade on "terrorism". All they are
trying to do is get your vote and they are using your
weaknesses and your fears to do so. The big picture is that
they only make the world a worse place to live in, not
better.
And the same is true of personal peace. How can one be a
peaceful person on the inside when there is nothing on the
news or in the papers except the stories of man's chaos and
terror? That is to say if you keep yourself in an
environment that creates tension, fear, agitation or "buzz",
how can you be at peace?
Of course, you cannot. And the worst part of that is that
you then cannot see clearly, think clearly or act clearly.
For those of you who dispute this claim, take the time to
find inner peace and then you will see.
Peace is the exclusive domain of each individual. Each has
the responsibility to choose it and work on maintaining it.
Peace is not up to governments - it is up to the individual.
Only those who are prepared to look honestly at all
sides of a situation have a chance at peace. Only those who
are prepared to stand alone will have a chance at their
Maker's peace and prosperity. Is that you?
Peace and prosperity can be yours right where you are if
that ever becomes a desire. That is what the story The Saga
of Pinehill is about, a blueprint for you to follow. If you
want peace and prosperity within your own life then purchase
the two books now in print. Read and study them. The way to
your own peace and prosperity is contained within their

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Eat One's Head Off: What is the reason we say a lazy person
"eats his head off"?
The expression was originally applied to horses whose food
cost more than they could earn. It refers to the humorous
notion that a horse eating oats will keep on nibbling its
lips after the oats are gone and, if not stopped will
finally succeed in eating its own head off.
