Report: Acid Rain Affects Large Swathes of China
BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- With Chinese factories
discharging more and more sulfur dioxide, one third of
China's territory was bathed in acid rain last year,
according to a parliamentary report.
More than half the 696 Chinese cities and counties monitored
had experienced acid rain. In some regions, every rainy day
was an acid rain day, according to the pollution control
inspection report released by the country's top legislature
on Saturday.
The report was based on lawmakers' recent inspection of
environmental protection efforts in 15 provinces, autonomous
regions and municipalities, and was submitted to the
Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC)
for review on Saturday.
With 25.49 million tons of sulfur dioxide discharged in 2005
- 27 percent more than in 2000 - China has become the
world's biggest sulfur dioxide polluter.
"Increased sulfur dioxide emissions meant that one third of
China's territory was affected by acid rain, posing a major
threat to soil and food safety," said Sheng Huaren,
vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, when briefing
lawmakers on the report.
He said the sulfur dioxide emissions doubled the acceptable
environmental limit. Coal-burning power stations and coking
plants were the main culprits.
According to the report's findings, nearly 650 out of 680
coking plants in Shanxi, the country's major coal mining
province, discharged excessive sulfur dioxide.
"In 40 percent of Chinese cities the air is polluted, mainly
by sulfur dioxide and particulates suspended in the air,"
Sheng said.
Smoke and industrial dust emissions also increased in 2005,
despite the government's vow to reduce the emissions by 9
percent annually, the report said.
Sheng said the deteriorating environment was the price local
governments paid for the headlong pursuit of economic
growth, acknowledging that many localities set economic
growth targets of over 7.5 percent.
"It is especially worrying that most local governments base
economic growth on energy consuming industries, disregarding
the environment's capacity to sustain industrial expansion,"
Sheng said.
Environmental inspectors recommend that the central
government take decisive action to curb high energy
consuming and polluting business by restricting land
approvals and loans while simultaneously raising pollution
control standards, Sheng said.
"Small coking plants and coal-burning power stations should
be shut down or restructured," he said. Enditem

The hormones, that are responsible for reproduction,
come from two sets of glands and as a group they are
called the gonads. In the female they are the ovaries
and in the male they are testes. Let's look at them
separately.
Reproductive hormones: Female
The ovaries are located in the "pelvic cavity". That is
the space "below" your abdomen. We think all parts of
our body "below the belt" as being contained in one
large space in our abdomen. In fact, we have several
spaces (cavities) in there and the lowest one is the
pelvic cavity. It holds the uterus, fallopian tubes and
ovaries. The uterus can be described as a thick-walled
hollow vase-shaped structure. The lower end of the
uterus is called the vagina and it ends with the
cervix. The main part of the uterus is a wider
structure. And attached at the top end of both sides is
a long thin tube called the fallopian tube, which ends
with an ovary. This is the source of the hormones:
estrogen and progesterone. If you can imagine looking
directly at the face of a long-horned bull, it would
give you an idea of what I am trying to convey. :)
These steroid hormones contribute to the development
and function of the female reproductive organs and sex
characteristics. They are responsible for several
functions throughout the life of a female. And as with
other hormonal action, the pituitary gland and others
glands will also contribute hormones. The ovaries
secrete two hormones, estrogen and progesterone.
Estrogen is involved in the development of female
sexual features such as breast growth, the accumulation
of body fat around the hips and thighs, and the growth
spurt that occurs during puberty. It also contributes
to the maturing of reproductive organs such as the
uterus and vagina, making them ready for pregnancy. The
other hormones: progesterone causes the uterine lining
to thicken in preparation for pregnancy. Together,
progesterone and estrogens are responsible for the
changes that occur in the uterus during the female
menstrual cycle.

I put in the lead article today the story about acid rain in
China. I did it as a bit of a trap for you.
How many of you are thinking "Oh yeah, but that's China.
They have so many people over there it can't help but be
polluted."? Or "That's in China. That doesn't affect me."?
It is easy to fall into these kinds of traps and it happens
without thinking.
The point is that while we no longer have acid rain in our
newspapers or on our television sets some of the world's
worst acid rain areas are our own eastern seaboard and Great
Lakes areas.
We pollute and continue to pollute. Other topics come into
our minds and we forget that we still pollute the skys and
acid rain is still a factor in our own land.
What does acid rain do? First of all the air is full of
sulphur dioxide and we breathe it in. That's not good. Next,
when it rains, the water brings down the sulphur dioxide,
mixing with it to form an acid and it falls on our land.
That mixture helps stunt or kill growth in gardens, flowers,
trees, crops and all manner of agriculture. Too much soon
produces areas that will not grow anything.
But, of course, we go merrily along in our daily life as if
none of this is an issue to us. We only want all the goodies
these factories can manufacture so we can "keep up with the
Joneses".
I am not saying that every man woman and child can do
something about acid rain. I am saying that every man woman
and child can take on a sense of responsibility so that
where they are they will not pollute. That means you don't
throw your garbage out just anywhere you want. You don't put
cigarette butts just anywhere. You don't permit uncontrolled
effluent to pollute rivers and lakes. If you are in a
position of control in some manufacturing firm you ensure
you are not polluting the air we breathe.
All these things are a question of our main motivation. If
money is your single goal then pollution will reign. If
social responsibility is mixed in with your desire to make
money you may make less, but live longer.
A sense of responsibility that transcends the dollar is just
one step toward peace and prosperity. If the truth were
known and you pursued peace and prosperity by going inside
yourself, you would have both faster.
Peace is the exclusive domain of each individual. Each has
the responsibility to choose it and work on maintaining it.
Peace is not up to governments - it is up to the individual.
Only those who are prepared to look honestly at all
sides of a situation have a chance at peace. Only those who
are prepared to stand alone will have a chance at their
Maker's peace and prosperity. Is that you?
Peace and prosperity can be yours right where you are if
that ever becomes a desire. That is what the story The Saga
