WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING FOR?

There are two sides to every conversation. No, not only
yours and theirs as you might think, but also, the speaking
and the listening. So often, our main interest is in the
speaking–OURS!
You don't learn much when your mouth is open. Have
you noticed that?
Twenty years ago, 'active listening' was a buzz word.
Those who took it to heart improved their relationships.
It was that simple. Those who did not made jokes about it.
It was then that the famous words were written: "I know
you think you heard what I said... But do you realize
that what you heard is not what I meant." That's what
comes from poor listening skills. There is a big difference
between hearing and listening!
How do you listen?
THROUGH A FILTER OF DEFENSE? You're always
expecting and listening for blame, a problem, an inadequacy.
You're listening from fear. Before the other person's
mouth is open, you're expecting to have to defend
yourself. This is a communication killer!
LIKE A SURGEON WITH SCALPEL IN HAND? You
cleanly separate the content -the words- from what those
words might mean to the speaker. That keeps you from
picking up the intent of the message. You also might
believe that it keeps you safe from having to respond to
that intent. Haven't you had the experience of someone
parroting back your exact words with a completely
different tone of voice, posture, inflection or emphasis?
Many folks use this, too, as a defense mechanism.
WITH YOUR HEART OPEN? You listen compassionately
without judgment. You have no intention of changing
anything. The speaker can speak... or even, vent... safely
because you are not jumping in with your point of view.
You are not taking the words personally, have no reason
to defend yourself and can be completely free to hear
what is being said. This is a big step up!
WITH FULL ATTENTION TO PURPOSE? You give your
full attention to the words, the inflection, the posture, the
tone of voice, the facial expressions, the timing. You take
in as much as you can to help you understand why the
person is delivering this particular message at this
particular time... to you, particularly.
You capture the essential reason the person is talking.
There is no 'you' in the equation! You don't jump to
conclusions. You don't formulate your response while the
other is still talking. You listen so well you can offer a
response that is connected with the underlying reason
the person has chosen to talk to you. You are rare.
WITH A TRUE INTEREST IN FINDING COMMON
GROUND? You're listening for things you agree with,
places where your values, ideas, desires and goals
and the speaker's intersect.
What a concept! This is truly enlightened listening.
I was talking with a coaching client the other day about
just this thing. To make my point, I told him this story:
When I was a teen, I studied piano and was well on my
way to a career in music. In my parents' quest to make
me the best, I was sent sixty miles away each week to
study with a woman who was absolutely demanding. My
fingers often ached from being hit with an ink stick pen.
Although I chose a different career, one invaluable thing
remains with me from this excellent, if brutal, teacher. I
often entered sight-reading contests. That is where you
are given a previously unseen piece of music and are
expected to play it to the best of your ability one minute
later for an audience. A situation fraught with tension.
It's the moment where skills, ability, talent and sheer
good luck meet!
Miss Tebo said this, "Once you start to play, keep making
beautiful music and let the bad notes fall on the floor."
These few words have impacted every part of my life!
So, in your communication, keep looking for the good,
for the things you agree with, for the highest intent of the
speaker. Keep that as your focus. Look for ways that
your thinking intersects with that of the speaker. Be
attuned to what you have in common. Listen for what
the speaker is committed to rather than what he or she
does not like. It's more efficient. You move forward
together more effectively.
It's just like that in communication and in listening
particularly. Let the bad notes fall on the floor and keep
the melody moving on.
You'll make much more than beautiful music!

Excel
Excel offers a helpful feature that enables you to merge cells
into a single, larger cell. You can merge four or more cells
at the top to form a single larger cell for the table's title.
Be aware of these things.
You can merge cells horizontally or vertically.
If a selection contains more than one nonempty cell,
the merged cells contain the contents and formatting of
the upper-left cell of the merged range.
Understanding that cells get merged -- not the contents
of the cells -- is very important.
To merge a range of cells, follow these steps:
Select the cells that you want to merge.
Choose Format, and then Cells.
Then click the Alignment tab.
Select the Merge Cells check box.
Click OK.
To unmerge cells, select the cells and deselect the Merge Cells
check box on the Alignment tab of the Format Cells dialog box.

A cream turns face dark
QUESTION: I would like your help. About upto one year ago I
was using a cream containing 2% hydroquinone. It reached a
time when my face just started darkening, whatever I use. I have
tried using Creams with AHA but this keeps darkening it even
more. I really don't know what to do. My face has become darker
than the rest of my body and I have tried all remedies of the book
but nothing seems to work. I started using creams containing
Hydroquinone since I was 14 years old and now I am 32. Kindly
advice me on what to do.
ANSWER: I am going to share how I research something. I know
nothing about this condition. So I went to my favorite and most
productive site, called Medline.com.

There I did a search for the term "hydroquinone" and found a
very easy to understand description. Plus it has all the cautions
and possible harmful effects. Now I go back to the question and
see if I can help a bit more.

Having done all this reading and rereading, I am now going to
go back to the reader and ask why she/he would be using this
type of cream for 18 years. There has to be a really good reason
why someone would use cream with these kinds of ingredients,
and 18 years later have no one to help with negative side effects.
My advice would be to go back to the pharmacist and start over,
writing down medical and pharmacological terms with which
to do your own research. I came across the name of a foundation,
which would be my number two stop for help and information.

made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.

From behind her came a voice. "It is Maria. It is just that
simple. Look for nothing more."
Maria was startled. Looking up she saw Reno's face shine
as if from a holy light. Turning, Maria saw Riata for the first
time. She immediately went to her knees in worship.
"Maria, Maria, do not do that. You do not worship me. I am
not worthy. It is for you to follow what Reno has been telling
you so you may then join me and the others teaching mankind
the truth. Rise up and stand tall. Your Maker loves you."
Riata spoke with that authority that struck home.
Maria broke down completely, sobbing out her guilt, soaking
up the love and acceptance that permeated the air. It was a
cleansing procedure.
"You are such a holy woman. I am privileged to be in your
presence." Maria exclaimed.
"It is I who is privileged, Maria. It is I." answered Riata.
"But it is you who set up this orphanage, this shrine. It is you
who was shot and left for dead. It is you who now lives. I don't
understand it." Maria sobbed.
"That is what has happened with Jesus and others. Does it
not say in your Bible that Jesus rose from the dead. In fact there
are more references in the Bible, about Jesus after his
experience on the cross than there are about his life before
the cross. Yet you, the church and others do not believe that,
even to this day. If you did then you would follow his teachings,
not the churches. All you need do is understand the simplicity
of his teachings, and you will see." said Riata.
She went on, "Here, hold my hand. Is it not the same as
yours? There is nothing different about me other than I have
learned to live by higher law, just the same as Reno here. She
has been teaching you right. There is nothing more than what
she has taught."
"Oh, my! I have a lot to learn. I have been so wrong all these
years and I did not see it until these children showed me. They
are remarkable children. They work hard all day and I never
hear a complaint or a fight. You taught them well. They are
wonderful. They make me feel welcome, and I am
thankful." said Maria.
"Maria, do you not understand you have earned your welcome?
They made you welcome because you did not abuse them
either here, in person, nor in your writings in the papers. For
those things you are made welcome, for they know you are not
out to hurt them, just as they would never harm you. They know
your soul Maria. All they want is for you to know it." said Riata,
letting go of Maria's hand.
"Another function of your law, I suppose?" asked Maria.
"Precisely. Do you not react likewise with people you deal
with?" asked Riata.
"I never thought about it much. We have a saying 'You can
catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.' I guess
that is what that means." Maria answered.
"Yes, only you are so busy with your daily life you don't really
apply that as you go, do you? What you do is respond to the
moment without thinking how you are going to respond. Rather
than your fundamental philosophy responding, the philosophy
you have chosen, you let your emotions of the moment guide
you through the day. So instead of planning and setting the
automatic mechanism that gets you through the day you let
that mechanism be the one you were programmed with as
you grew up. That one you made few, if any, choices about.
It was thrust on you by parents, teachers and circumstance.
Now it is time you made choices as to who and what you
shall be. Train your automatic mechanism." said Riata.
"I am not sure I fully understand." said Maria.
"The person you are today is the person you 'absorbed' in
your childhood. Now is the time to train your mind and emotions
to be the person you want to be. Your mind knows the truths.
You know that good begets good and bad begets bad. Make
a choice as to how you will act in all circumstances, realizing
the law, 'As ye sow, so shall ye reap.' That way your life now
becomes the springboard for good and your rewards shall
be greater than you now believe." said Riata.
"I would like that. I would like to be like you, but that is
impossible." said Maria.
"Maria, the law applies to what you tell your own mind, too.
If you tell yourself untruths as you just did, they will come to
pass just as sure as anything else you tell your mind. It is
completely possible for you to learn to live by higher law,
and it is simple. You best begin to tell your mind that, and
keep it up until it believes you. Then you will be on the path
you want." warned Riata.
