What flower mimics the smell of dead meat in order
to attract flies?

The "rafflesia" (or "corpse lily"), a parasitic plant native
to Indonesia and Malaysia, is a pretty smelly plant. In order
to get pollinated, it must attract carrion flies. So its flowers
mimic the smell of dead meat. Lovely.

What is the largest flower in the world?

The above-mentioned "corpse lily" holds that honor. Its
putrid flowers can weigh as much as fifteen pounds
each and measure up to three feet wide. Its petals are
an inch thick.

Putting the 'I' in Team
by Avish Parashar

There's no ?I? in team!?

This sports cliche reminds people that team success is
more important than individual glory, a sentiment that is
as true for business teams as it is for sports teams. The
phrase, however, overlooks the role of the individual in
making the team stronger.

To encourage team development, organizations use
shared experience? teambuilding events, such as rope
courses, rowing, and paintball. While these events have
some benefit, they do not necessarily teach the personal
skills that lead to stronger teams. These skills are confidence,
trust, and control sharing, and they are the foundation of
a strong team. Rather than a simple shared experience,
the key to a good teambuilding event is teaching members
these three core skills.

The first personal skill to develop is confidence, or personal
power. Personal power is a person's ability to overcome
problems and maximize their effectiveness. Personal power
leads to confidence because once you feel empowered,
you feel confident to take on challenges at work and life.
This is important in a team sense because strong teams
are composed of strong individuals. Confidence's real
importance, however, is in how it allows the next two skills
to develop.

The second personal skill to develop is trust. Trust develops
over time, but having a proper trusting attitude can help
members bypass months and years of ?getting to know each
other.? The key to being trusting is to open up to others, not
because you are confident in their abilities, but because you
are confident in your own. This is where confidence becomes
so important. Knowing that you can handle whatever people
throw your way allows you to open up and trust them, even if
you don?t know them that well. This approach creates a
trusting environment from the start, and strong teambuilding
exercises will focus as much on building a trusting attitude
as on developing trust.

Traditional teambuilding events, such as rope courses,
address the concept of trust, but do it in a way that does not
translate well to a professional environment. There are many
people that I would trust to hold one end of a rope for me so
that I did not fall to my death. I would not trust all of those
people to listen to and respect ideas that I had in the office
place. One form of trust does not imply another. To be effective,
any trust exercise must relate to communication and respect
in a similar environment to work.

Trust and confidence are vital to supporting the third core
skill for effective teams, control sharing. If the premise behind
teamwork is synergy (the whole is greater than the sum of its
parts) then control is at the heart of why some teams thrive
while others flounder. Two people working alone will generate
two separate sets of ideas. Put them together and new ideas
emerge after one person hears something that the other
person says. As a result, you get a third set of ideas that
neither person would have come up with alone. The only way
to find that third set is for each person to let go of his original
ideas. If either person is unwilling to do this, then he will never
explore the new ideas and discover that critical third set. The
ability to let go of control is paramount to effective teamwork.

In a ?shared experience,?team building event, even one where
the event is designed so that each member must contribute,
one or two ?Alpha? personalities usually take charge and dictate
how the task should be done. Everyone participates (kind of),
has fun (sort of), and learns that they can work together (maybe).
They do not, however, learn the personal skills that will allow
them to maximize their teamwork back at work.

The beauty of the three skills addressed here is that if a
company has two groups, both filled with members who possess
these skills, then members can switch teams without a large
loss in the team feel. Because all three of these skills are
personal and individual, a new team will not need to go through
a shared experience to trust each other and work together. They
will naturally do it out of the gate.

Always remember that, regardless of what the actual event is,
if these three core skills are not being addressed, it is highly
likely that the lessons taught at the event will have little impact
in the workplace.

I Wish Doctors Had More Time to Listen.
Then You Wouldn't Be Looking For Your
Own Solutions On The Internet. (How To
Use The Internet Knowledge And Still Keep
Your Doctor!)
PART 5 of 10

We all say we accept change, but secretly deep down
inside we don't really want to add more options and make
more adjustments. We know this would alter our comfort
level. And our routines. So if you take your list of signs
and symptoms to your doctor, along with your list of
Internet findings, DON'T expect immediate congratulations
on your wonderful research! Ego is present and so
might be a challenge to their professional pride.
Let me give you an example of what I mean. A few
days ago someone contacted us, and as usual, told
us their signs and symptoms…mostly symptoms. She
had already done the Internet searches and also spent
a lot of time with her primary care physician and other
specialists. She was still less than happy with the
outcomes as everyone told her she had nothing wrong
and that she would just have to live with her problems. . .
and gave her a relaxant for her "anxiety attacks". I'll call
her Nancy (not her real name). Nancy had been given
all sorts of testing but nothing showed up. These negative
results showed no pathology (disease causing activities).
That's a good result, but it still didn't account for her
symptoms . . . no signs.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.

Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.

The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.

The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------

As Eloise moved about the hut she could feel her strength
returning. With her it was likely faster than a lot of women for
she could command it so. However, she did not, she let things
happen when they were supposed to happen. All these laws
had long ago been worked out. She would not interfere. She
felt her legs gain power. She was working the stiffness out.
Her tummy still sagged a little and her groin hurt, yet that, too
would pass quickly.

Her mind was coming around to things she thought she had
to do. Karmuz warned her against doing anything today and
tomorrow. On the third day she could start to do a little. She
must give her body a little time to adjust to the changes it just
went through.

Eloise did not argue. You did not need to tell her she had
been through a lot. She would follow Karmuz's advice.

The curtains split open and there was Alewka. "Eloise, are
you sure you should be up?"

"Relax, Mom. You come from a time and place where women
used to stay in the hospital a week before going home. Here
the women are back working on the third day. It is just a time
and place thing and all is well." answered Eloise.

"Hi Karmuz." said Alewka.

"Hi Missy Henry. Missy is right you know. We women in this
village, we have all been back at our duties in three days. It
is just our custom. It helps us heal and helps us get back into
normal life. We have done it for as long as our stories tell us
about our history. That was a nice fire last night." Karmuz
referred to the stories told around the fire last night.

"That was a wonderful fire last night. I learned so much. How
come you don't do that at every fire?" asked Alewka.

"We cannot. They would be boring and we would lose the
interest of the children. It is how we teach our young, and if
they hear it too often they no longer listen. We have long
experience and study on this. What we did last night must
only happen once or twice a year. Then the children like to
come and listen, and they learn." answered Karmuz.

"I think that is why this village prospers, Mother. They take the
time to study and think on the right way to do things. Clearly
they have the attention and respect of their
children." said Eloise.

"For peace and harmony in the village, Missy, we have
always done this. Do you remember the very first day you
came here? Remember those two men who did not like
Boolanga and were afraid of Midnight? They were children
who did not listen. They did not play well with us kids and
they would not play fair. When the time came to be around
the fire, they went off somewhere else. They would not come
sit by the fire and hear the stories. You well remember what
happened to them. Since that day we have had no trouble.
The village learned from that incident. We want no more
fighting amongst members of our village, and we watch
our children very close." said Karmuz.

"I have never seen a community where, as a community
they think along these lines and actually implement the
plan. What is interesting is that you allow your children
to see parts of the outside world, too." said Alewka.

"Oh, yes, Missy Henry. We cannot isolate out children
from what is happening outside, because then they would
rebel against us. We let them see the good and the bad.
We are just very careful about what goes on in daily life
within the village. Once they have a strong sense of who
they are, and the confidence to be themselves and defend
themselves, while alone, in the presence of strangers then
they are free to go and explore. The person is formed by
then and will do well wherever they find themselves. After
they have passed through the rebellious years they
become adults whom we trust and in whom we have the
utmost trust. That way our village prospers, because they
respect our values." said Karmuz.

"Wonderful, isn't it. That is why we love to be here so much.
Not only is it peaceful and comfortable, but you have the
values that I think all men want." said Alewka.

"You are welcome, Missy Henry, because you contribute
to those values. Your daughter is a Master teacher of
those values, and the village children follow her around
as if she were a saint. She teaches well and has the right
philosophy to be in our village. When the village see you
and Mr. Henry they know well where it came
from." said Karmuz.

"Karmuz, you flatter me. We only did, as parents, what we
thought was right. We like those values too. But it was Eloise,
who, on that long and dangerous journey, learned to
live by higher law. It was she who brought that knowledge
home and allowed us to participate." spoke Alewka.

Martin was a slow worker and found it difficult to hold down

"Where are the tortoises?" he asked him.

"I can't believe it" said Martin "I just opened the door
