Do lions and tigers roam the same territory?
No. Lions are today found naturally only in Africa.
(Thousands of years ago, lions were common throughout
southern Europe, southern Asia, eastern and central
India and over the whole of the African continent.) Even
in Africa lions have been wiped out in the north. Tigers
are found in Asia. They range throughout India from the
Himalayas to Cape Comorin, except in the deserts. They
are also found in Burma, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java,
and Bali. Some species are also found in southern China
(South China tigers) and in southeastern Russia (the
Amur or Siberian tiger).
Are today's tigers descended from sabre-tooth tigers?
Despite the misleading name, sabre-tooth tigers are
NOT the ancestors of today's tigers. In fact, sabre-tooth
tigers belonged to a separate branch of cat evolution which
became extinct many millions of years ago. Tigers (and all
other carnivores) are descended from animals called
miacids that lived during the age of the dinosaurs about
60 million years ago. These small mammals evolved over
millions of years into several hundred different species,
including cats, bears, dogs and weasels.

Cornpone and Treewood

Cornpone Taggart and Hamstrung Treewood are a
couple country hicks. Cornpone, known as "Pone" or
"Old Pone" earns his living on the internet, and has
since he left what schooling he had. He's a lazy cuss,
and figured the internet was the way to earn the kind
of living he wanted. He thought it beat the backbreaking
sweat soaking work that was the kind you could
get in his town.
Hamstrung Treewood, didn't pay much attention to
computers in school and went out to work in the
backbreaking world in town. He had been without
work for a while and Pone was teaching him how to
set up a business on the internet.
The story continues.

"If'n I's was a bettin' man Strung, I's'd say yous jus' had
yerself a Christmas that was a good'un. I's can tell by the
smile on yer face." said Cornpone Taggart, as he watched
his buddy Hamstrung Treewood saunter up to meet him
at the tree in the town common.
"Yous gots tha' right Pone. Me'n the family done has
ourselves a real good Christmas. An' Pone, its ajus' agonna
keep on. I's really alookin' fo'ard ta nex' year. I's athinkin' I's
agonna be able to expand my markets and do real good
nex' year. An' Pone, I's sure a wishin' the best fer yous
too." said Strung in reply.
"Well, thank ya Strung. I's wish yous the best too. I's
athinkin' yous has come a long way this year in yer learnin'
this here innynet marketin' thing. I's sees a bright future
fer yous Strung. Jus' 'amember tha' no ones agonna do it
fer yous. Wha' yous gits from yer innynet bisness is only
because yous is aworkin' it. So's yous writes yer own ticket
Strung. Tha's the beauty of the innynet." said Pone.
"Tha's kinda wha's gots me all esited Pone. I's never been
in this here position afore, an' I's alookin' for'ard
to it." said Strung.
"I's glad Strung. Yous knows this is the last chance we's
agonna have ta wish the folks a Happy New Year? I's a
thinkin' we's had better do that on accounta they bin awful
good ta yous an' me." said Pone.
"Tha's right Pone, tha's right. Happy New Year folks. Pone
an' I wishes yous all the best and we wants ta thankya fer
yer help an' support this las' year. Have yerselves a
good'un next year."
"Tha's comes from me too, folks. Have yerselves a
Happy New Year an' Strung an' I's agonna be back to
see yous nex' year.

Windows
Next time Windows is having trouble shutting down, follow
these steps:
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Task screen. This is
all of the programs currently running. Sometimes, one or
more may come up with a message saying that it is not
responding. End these tasks by pressing the "End Task"
button. One by one, keep ending tasks until the
only one left is Explorer. Now try your Shut Down.
Also make sure your Windows has been recently updated
and you have run Scan Disk.

Back to my conversation with Nancy. She also
mentioned that sometimes her face and that side of
her body became numb! Her doctor had sent her for
an EEG (Electroencephalogram . . . a test to check the
activity and structures of the brain for abnormalities.)
No problems were apparent there. That's good and
that's bad. She still has no idea how these symptoms
come and go. And the severity of them is increasing.
What was interesting as we tried to come up with possible
causes, we discovered things she was doing herself to
try eliminate her symptoms. Such as herbal and over
the counter (OTC) remedies. Then we discovered some
chemicals such as cleaning products that might be adding
to the symptoms. Who knows... The point is that few doctors
have the time to investigate like this. My point in describing
Nancy's predicament is that this lack of investigative
time is normal in a doctor's office. They are not given
adequate time to do a thorough workup and discover
relevant possibilities. (One of the most fascinating activities
in big medical centers is "Grand Rounds'. If you participate
as a patient, it means that you have something complex
and all "brains" are needed to come up with a possible
diagnosis. If you are a spectator, it's fascinating to hear
all the cross-speciality thinking!) Just to add another
comment to Nancy's information . . . I had sent her some
information about possible "triggers" for her symptoms
and she has just sent me an email back. She and her
mother found several things that might be contributing
to the throat and ear problem.

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

As they approached their hut they both noticed in the same
instant, that their hut had been decorated.
The villagers had gotten together in that short little while
when Mazunta had been over to the birthing hut to get Eloise.
The doorway was completely surrounded and and lined with
flowers. Someone had made a cradle that hung from three
poles that had been erected in a triangle looking arrangement.
From the center hung a basket looking thing that contained a
blanket. The whole thing was placed in front of the bench Eloise
and Mazunta used frequently, in the mornings, just enjoying
the morning sun.
Inside the hut, too, was a rocking cradle in which to put the
baby, and more flowers.
On a bench that had been moved in was an assortment of
food and beverages. The idea was so Eloise would not have
to cook or work for the next little while.
Eloise broke out in tears. She had never seen anything so
beautiful, nor a people so caring. Right in the middle of the
bunch was her Father and Mazunta's folks.
Mazunta reached over and took the baby. The crowd cheered.
Boolanga approached her and gave her a big, though gentle,
hug. One by one everyone there gave her a hug.
Eloise had not expected this. It was a beautiful showing of
love and respect from the village. She had not seen any hut
decorated like this before.
Pam and David were standing, one on each side of the door,
ushering her into her home. "Welcome home Missy. We are
most happy you, the baby and your husband are all doing
fine. May we see her El?"
Mazunta, took some of the blanket away from her face and
gave the child to Pam. Pam and the baby cooed. She passed
the child to David. He, too, was impressed. David passed the
child to her Grandmother Arionanga. Soon the child was
passed to everyone in the village and Eloise could only watch.
She was pleased, as was her husband, that the village felt
this way. She walked over to the bench and sat.
Mazunta sat down beside her. "Are you alright, Bueno?" he
asked, concerned.
"I'm fine, Maz. It just looks like it will be a while before we get
our firstborn back." she smiled.
When everyone had seen the child they brought her back and
placed her in the hanging swing. She was made to swing very
slowly and gently. Even though Alli had been awakened by all
the attention she immediately went to sleep again with this
soft motion.
One of the village elders approached them. "In seven moons
we will welcome this child into our village." Then he turned
and walked away.
Eloise and Mazunta knew what he meant by that. It was the
village custom to hold a fire where the child was present. The
parents and the child were given privilege that night and, in
a way, it was like a formal village acceptance of it's
newest member. Not much happened in this village without
a celebration for it.
As they were sitting there Mae, too, came over. Eloise rose,
and ran into her arms. "Oh, Mae, what a wonderful little girl.
Did you see her?"
"I think she is a fine girl El. I love you dear. I am so pleased
you now have a family and I am only too glad to babysit for
you." Mae said, as both she and Eloise realized they had
a very special relationship.
"Thank you Mae. I know you will. You know you are
welcome here anytime."
Mazunta rose as Mae and Eloise walked back. Both
looked in the swing. "You sure have a beautiful little girl
here Mazunta. You must be very proud." said Mae.
"I am Mrs. Wiley. It is a first for us and I am just getting
used to the idea."
Mae laughed. "It won't take long for all this to settle in,
Mazunta. You are a very fortunate man to have this lovely
girl and now this child."
"No one knows that more than I."
Eloise was tired and went in to rest. The villagers dispersed,
and the day settled down for the two new parents.
Mazunta joined his wife, inside, after picking up little Alli
and placing her in the cradle inside.
