TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
Is it true that many of the Grimm fairy tales are violent?
Is it true that the yo-yo was based on a weapon?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Is "Cinderella" originally a Chinese fairy tale?
Versions of "Cinderella" have existed all over the world for
more than a thousand years. More than 700 tales have been
collected. But one of the earliest versions is indeed Chinese.
The Chinese tale, written about 850 AD, has magic fish bones
instead of a fairy godmother and a festival instead of a ball.
There is no prince (the lucky groom is a wealthy merchant
instead). And Cinderella ("Yeh-Hsien") wears golden slippers
instead of glass ones. But the basic story elements are the
same as the ones Western readers are familiar with: Cinderella
is abused by a nasty stepmom who forces her to work and
dress like a servant. She is magically transformed into a
fashionable lady to attend the festival (ball), but loses her
unique slipper when she must depart suddenly. The rich
merchant (prince) must use the shoe to find her.
Is it true that Cinderella wears a glass slipper in Western
versions only because of a translation error?
Dancing in a glass slipper HAS to be foolish and dangerous,
and it may just be that Cinderella never stepped out that way.
In many old European versions of the tale, Cinderella wears a
satin slipper or leather one or even a fur slipper (definitely
more comfortable!) Charles Perrault, a seventeenth-century
French writer who wrote down many of the tales he had heard
as a child, put Cinderella in glass slippers. Whether it was
intentional or not is unclear, but the word for "fur" ("vair" in
French) and the word for "glass" ("verre") are similar. Perrault
could have made a mistake. Or, he could have realized that
a glass slipper was far more magical than a fur one.

3 Litle Mistakes That Could
Send People Away
by Valerian Dinca
Advertising has always been a method designed to
change human behavior by getting people to purchase
a certain product or service.
Now the internet has changed that, advertising
merely has to deflect human behavior, to divert
curiosity from an advertisement or commercial
to a website. Big and small online businesses are
discovering that truth : internet advertising is not anymore
what it used to be.
An Internet Advertising Campaign should consist in
developing of five tactics for:
a. Driving people to your website
b. Keeping people at the website
c. Getting people back ( once they've left the website )
d. Closing the deal
e. Running the "Back-End"
I think you agree that it's hard enough to bring people
to your little slice of cyberspace, and once they're inside,
you have just a very few brief seconds to catch their
attention. If your site is not prepared enough, a
simple click and your site visitor is gone!
It's hard to give a perfect solution to all above points. But
I can help you with some main blunders you should avoid
in order to keep as many interested prospects on your site.
1. Slow downloading.
Most of the time the visitor is in a big rush. S/he knows that
time is money and s/he think that in every situation moving
fast means to earn more. The visitor in looking for a big goal
and, from this big rush perspective, if your site is running
very slow that means there is nothing interesting inside.
Then take care to avoid big pictures or large pages. Do not
use too many sophisticated scripts and applets, they
work slow as well.
2. Multiple popup and popunder windows.
It's a fact that most people simply do NOT appreciate
multiple popups or popunders! Try to guess what will
think a visitor coming to your site when she/he sees a lot
of windows popping like crazy. With no doubt this visitor
will be confused, scared maybe, and his choice will be
to go anywhere, just to find an escape.
3. Unreadable text.
Certain texts are easier to read than others. For example,
everybody knows that dark text on a light background is the
easiest to read. The reverse -- like white text on black
background -- can cause fatigue when reading large pages
of text. This technique is better used just to highlight
a portion of the page, but not very often. On the other hand,
a text that is too small can cause problems.
As a general rule try to avoid everything that could make
people feel uncomfortable, because they will choose to
leave your cyber-island.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
In A Terminal Illness, Everyone
Needs Care
PART 1 of 9
A friend of ours has a dad who is near the end of his
life... cancer has taken over most of his body, and has
also now invaded his brain cells. He has a very supportive
spouse and family. He is at home and all the family
members have taken turns to stay with him 24/7. This
looks like the ideal way to look after a loved one with a
terminal illness. But let's look at the underlying situation
a little closer. This was brought to my attention because
the mom came to my friend and said she couldn't carry
on any longer: that she was ready to place him into a
hospice facility. Many of the other family members were
very upset with this possibility, especially one daughter.
It is suspected that she made a pact with the dad during
a previous crisis ... he would have the minor surgery, to
eliminate a life-threatening problem, as long as he never
got to back to the hospital... any hospital. So now along
comes the mother, unable to carry the physical load any
more as the prime caregiver. Finally she asks for help. . .
only to be "held hostage" to promise one of her children
made without her consent. An added roadblock now
shows up, that the dad's cancer has affected his
awareness level. Now he isn't able to make really
appropriate decisions. He slips in and out of
consciousness as time moves on.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Her insight caught the inner mood of both Oomano and
Romano. She had spoken direct to their hearts and they felt
it. All they needed was this endorsement of their emotional
condition and acceptance of what they were going through.
Both Oomano and Romano relaxed. They knew they were
in the right place and with the right people. This acceptance
somehow made everything easier.
Mazunta came out of the hut, and stretched. He soaked up
the sunlight for a minute and then came over and said hi to
Romano and Oomano. Mazunta, of course, had been the
one chiefly responsible for Romano finding higher law. The
two men had a bond of love that was unshakeable.
"How are your folks? And Riata? I'll bet she is restless,
what with no longer looking after the orphanage." asked
Eloise.
"Missy she is. But I imagine she will be called to some other
duty that will keep her occupied. That is where Romano
and I are going to have out wedding. Oh! Mom and Dad
are just fine. They talk about you all the time. After all the
stories in the press about what dirty deeds the church has
been pulling, the churches are nearly empty. Most folks
are coming over to the shrine, at the orphanage. There they
feel they are in a truly holy place, are not asked to perform
in any particular life style or way, and are not asked for their
money. On top of that they are fed and given drink at no
cost or other obligation. They cannot grasp the idea it is free
and they all feel they must give money, so they do, but neither
the shrine or the orphanage ask for it neither use it. The money
is just piling up in the bank."
"I am sure the kids will find some good use for it. They are
wise, and still under Riata's tutelage." said Eloise.
"They are." confirmed Oomano.
"And you Romano! What is up with you lately?" asked Maz.
"Not much Maz. These women keep me pretty occupied,
what with Oomano working with the kids Miguele keeps
bringing home. He brought home a sweet little girl the other
day. She had been orphaned and living on the streets. She
was a mess when he brought her in. I don't know how children
at age three and four survive the streets. Fortunately for her
Miguele spotted her and was able to persuade her to come
home with him. He never forces that issue. The child must
want to and make that decision themselves. It takes a little
while for them to trust the love and kindness they receive.
Some think they can get the upper hand by stealing what
the other kids have. They all try it. But, in time and with love
Oomano gets them all straightened around and shows
them the real benefits of the law." answered Romano.
"You must have some children living by higher law by now
Oomano?" asked Eloise.
"They are beginning to live that way without any formal
recognition of it, Missy. Some are doing wonderful things.
Yet they are not yet mature enough to fully handle it on their
own, while away from our influence. Most are just assuming
this is the way to live without giving the matter much thought.
Fortunately each of their hearts is a loving, giving heart. We
all have a wonderful time together." said Oomano.
"How old is the oldest child?" asked Eloise.
"Thirteen." said Oomano.
"Well, it won't be long and they will sprout their wings." said
Eloise.
"I think Romano and I are going to take a walk down to the
river." said Maz.
"Okay, you guys, don't be long. I'll whip up something to eat
here in about an hour." said Eloise.
"Missy, we came because we wanted to talk to you about
our wedding. We want you and some of the people here in
the village, to come. We also enjoyed, very much, some of
the guests you had at your wedding and we wondered if it
would be proper to invite some of them to our
wedding?" asked Oomano.
"Certainly Oomano, you can invite anyone you want. Who
were you thinking of?" asked Eloise.
"Well, Missy! All of them. My Mom and Dad think very
highly of Mr. and Mrs. Striker and Mr. and Mrs. White. They
spent quite a little time together at your wedding, for a
couple, three days. I want to ask your folks, of course, and
if their next door neighbor, Mrs. Miles would like to come
that would be nice, too." said Oomano.
"I think that would be just fine. Sure, ask them. I'll bet they
would all be glad to come." was Eloise's response, "How
are you going to manage the crowds at the orphanage?
They are crowded all the time, aren't they?"

On a New Zealand insect spray - THIS PRODUCT

(Makes sense...except these instructions we're IN THE BOX!)
In some countries (like W. Virginia:), on the bottom of Coke
bottles - OPEN OTHER END.
On a Sears hairdryer - DO NOT USE WHILE SLEEPING.
( Now THAT I'd like to see! )
On a bag of Fritos - YOU COULD BE A WINNER! NO
PURCHASE NECESSARY. DETAILS INSIDE.
(The shoplifter special!)
On a bar of Dial soap - DIRECTIONS - USE LIKE REGULAR

On Tesco's Tiramisu dessert (printed on BOTTOM of the box)
* DO NOT TURN UPSIDE DOWN. (oops...Too late! You lose!)
On Marks & Spencer Bread Pudding - PRODUCT WILL BE
HOT AFTER HEATING. (Are you sure? Let's experiment.)
On a Korean kitchen knife - WARNING KEEP OUT OF
CHILDREN. (Dammit! Who are they to tell me what to
do with my kids?)
On a string of Chinese-made Christmas lights -
FOR INDOOR OR OUTDOOR USE ONLY. (As opposed
to what...use in outer space?)
On an American Airlines packet of nuts - INSTRUCTIONS -
OPEN PACKET, EAT NUTS. (I'm sure glad they cleared
that up.)
On a Swedish chainsaw - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STOP
CHAIN WITH YOUR HANDS OR GENITALS. (What kind
of consumer phone-call led to this warning?)
On a child's superman costume - WEARING OF THIS
GARMENT DOES NOT ENABLE YOU TO FLY. That's right,
destroy a universal childhood fantasy!)
