TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

How do scientists know how old urchins are?

How do sea urchins move?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Why are we more likely to snore as we grow older?

As we age, our muscles become more flaccid, making
snoring more likely. Snoring is essentially the vibration
of relaxed tissues lining the upper airways. Why do we
snore at night and not when we're awake? Because
our muscles relax at night.

What creature can still reproduce after two hundred years?

Red sea urchins. The spiny marine invertebrates can
grow much older than previously thought. In fact, urchins
that were infants when Lewis and Clark reached the
Pacific in 1805 might still be living and reproducing.
Scientists now believe the red sea urchin to be one of
the longest-lived creatures on Earth.

Here's To Think On ...
by Ken Darby
-----------------

Giving!

Returning from a trip to visit my grandmother in Canada, I
was stopped by a state trooper in New York for exceeding
the speed limit. Grateful to have received a warning
instead of a ticket, I gave him a small bag of my
grandmother's delicious chocolate chip cookies and
proceeded on my way.

Later, I was stopped by another trooper. "What have I
done?" I asked.

"Nothing," the trooper said, smiling. "I heard you were
passing out great chocolate chip cookies."

While it may not have been voluntary, contained within
this joke is the message of "giving". The grandmother,
as grandmothers do, gave the cookies to the story teller
and the story teller gave the cookies to the policemen.

It puts me in mind of the law "As ye sow, so shall ye reap."
In all the world people are either givers or takers. It is a
learned thing, right from the beginning. Think on it. We
teach our babies to be takers. If we didn't they might
not survive.

A baby is born without knowledge. All it knows is it is
hungry. So it cries. Mom responds to the crying and the
baby soon learns that if it cries it will get food. As the
babies horizon expands it finds it can get attention too,
by crying. And soon it learns it can get a lot of things by
crying. That is why, when a child first learns to talk the
words "Mine, Mine, Mine" are quickly learned as is the
action to support those words.

Then is when we must teach a child about sharing,
giving, loving. Right when the child is in it's formative
years we must set the seeds of giving and loving. To
wait is to raise a child to be a taker.

What's wrong with being a taker? Well, for one thing
a taker must have material goods to make him happy
and so soon as one gets material goods they need
more. They are never at rest, never truly happy and
usually not well adjusted.

There is nothing wrong with having material goods.
The problem is that we should not allow material goods
to have us. That is why one must teach a child early
that to give, to love, to share is part of leading a well
balanced life.

I have had people tell me that a child taking is natural.
Wrong. A child being hungry is natural. From there
we teach the child to take. It is true it is part of a natural
cycle but soon after we teach a child to take we must
teach it to share, love, give. At least if we would have
our children happy, well balanced and live successful
lives that is what we must do.

Giving!

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
PART 3 of 8
Fats and fried foods.

QUESTION: Can you give me information on how fried foods
effect your blood pressure, and can you tell me how much fried
foods effect your blood pressure. Please get back to me as soon
as possible.

ANSWER: I would refer you to the information above, plus good,
newly published dietary books. The discussion of fats in our
diets is very controversial right now. With so much research
going on, we are learning that our bodies NEED some fat. The
challenge is what kind and how much. And when you ask about
"fried foods", I would suggest the entire concept might be based
on a fast food meal. And then you would want to ask what type
of fat is used. I would hazard a guess it would NOT be "good"
fats like a Omega fatty acid, which is what we would like people
to consider. I am now going to stick my neck out and make a
rather unpopular statement. Many dieticians are still providing
less than current and well-researched information.

I had a chance to "visit" with Wayne Pickering a few days ago.
If you go to his web site, he has many different things to offer,
including recipes and health articles. His newsletter is fun! Do
I sound like a commercial? I don't mean to be, but it is difficult
to get on the road to health if you don't know anything about
foods and how to eat better. This is a good starting point.
http://www.wayne-pickering.com Some places and articles
are so "way out there" that you lose your enthusiasm for
changing your unhealthy habits and revert back to your old
ones. Another book I am enjoying is Suzanne Somers' Get
Skinny On Fabulous Food. The foreword by
Dr. Diane Schwarzbein is most helpful and an eye-opener.
It's almost worth the price of the book alone. It's a mini course
in reversing your health challenges! So treat yourself to a
healthy start for 2003.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------

A week passed and Riata found herself right at
home. She had spent so many years working in the
orphanage in Matto Grosso in South America that
here it seemed like "old home week". Oh, the faces
on the kids were different but other than that it
was the same.

Mae had been working on her over this last
week to come with her and Susan on their walk
through China. Riata wasn't too sure about that,
liking the life at the orphanage.

Mae was subtle and worked on her slowly but
persistently. It would be nice to have an adult
third party along.

It had now been two months since Mae and Susan
had been following their original plan. They had
been here with Tlang. Now, however, it was obvious
Tlang needed them less and less so Mae went to her
one day and had a talk. "Tlang, Miss Susan and I
have been thinking of resuming our journey. We
have noticed you are fine here. You like the kids.
You like Reno, Amenti and Maria. Life has been
good for you here. When we arrived I promised you
we would speak to you whenever we left. That we
have done and that is what I'm doing now. If we
promise to come back to visit once in a while
would you say it is okay for us to leave?"

"I knew you would be going one day. That is
why you came here. I like to have you around but I
like it here and Reno is teaching me higher law
here. That is what I want. I want to learn so I
can visit you and surprise you."

Mae wrapped her arms around the little girl
and gave her a hug. "I will look for you every day
until you come to me." Mae gave Tlang a kiss.

"I will one day. You will see."

"Tlang, I know. I know how determined you are
and I know I will see you coming to me. Make it
soon. Thank you for letting us continue our
journey. I will come back here often, too."

"That's okay Miss Mae. I have much to do
here."

In the back of her mind Mae could not help but
wonder at the "grown up" attitude Tlang had. Mae
well knew that some of it was a front but, in
truth, Tlang was becoming a leader amongst the
children solely as a result of her rapid maturing.
No doubt the hardships she went through a few
years before aided that maturity.

Mae and Susan did not leave right away. They
had Tlang's permission but they didn't want to
leave the instant they had it. They waited and
watched. One day Tlang got involved in a large
project and was so busy she never even came over
to speak with Mae or Susan once. The next day she
was busy, too. It was an excellent moment to
leave.

Before leaving they extracted a promise from
Riata that she would come visit them whenever they
called her and that she would spend some time with
them on the road. That appeared fine with all of
them.

With that Mae and Susan were away. They
touched down in the marketplace they had studied
all day the day before they left for the
orphanage. Nothing had changed. The vendors were
still busy doing the same things they did every
day, and the shoppers were the same people who
came here everyday and the pattern and practises
were going on as usual.

Mae and Susan worked their way out of the
market and began walking through the city. It was
large enough that it took several days to get
through. It wasn't that they were in any hurry.
They stopped to smell the flowers at every chance
the got.

The city was interesting as most cities were.
Trying to cross a street was a nerve wracking
experience. It wasn't so much the automobiles and
trucks that caused a problem but the thousands
upon thousands of bicycles. It was phenomenal the
number of bicycles they saw. They were everywhere.

To ride a bicycle in this city was a wise
decision. There were people everywhere and many
times traffic would get all snarled up. A bicycle
was a way of getting through traffic tie ups.
However it was often a bicycle that caused traffic
tie ups. They were like air and water. Everywhere
you looked there were bicycles. Only after getting
out of the center of the city and into the edges
did the cycle traffic diminish.

For quite some distance though, nearly 20km
Mae and Susan were always in sight of at least a
dozen bicycles and their riders.

They were in a jungle area now. They passed
many small villages that were no more than a
collection of people who found a way to eek out a
living in the area. When there were too many
people or too little food then some, the newest
ones, would move on to establish a new village and
the pattern would repeat itself for thousands of
years.

things that happen to us along the way.

HA! HA! HA!

Having moved 15 times during our 37-year marriage, my
husband and I appreciate movers who take the time to
label carefully boxes they pack for us.

The accuracy of labels can make a huge difference when
we try to find something right away.

My favorite was done by one guy who attached this sticker
to a box - obviously not knowing how to spell the best one
word description:

"Animals you hit with a stick at a Mexican party."
