ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Has lightning ever caused a plane to crash?

Lightning is suspected as the cause of a plane crash in
only a few cases worldwide. Actually, it is estimated that, on
average, EACH aircraft is stuck at least once a year. In fact,
scientists have shown that planes sometimes CAUSE lightning
strikes when they travel into heavily charged clouds. The
lightning in those cases goes in the opposite direction: it
originates AT the plane and travels off it.

How does lightning help plants?

Lightning keeps plants alive. The intense heat of lightning
forces nitrogen in the air to mix with oxygen, forming nitrogen
oxides that are soluble in water and fall to the ground in rain.
Plants need nitrates to survive, so without lightning, plants
could not live.

The uncorking of online alcohol sales
Published: December 7, 2004, 8:10 AM PST
By Declan McCullagh
Staff Writer, CNET News.com

Juanita Swedenburg is an unlikely Internet revolutionary. The
owner of a small family winery on a 130-acre cattle farm in
Middlesburg, Va., she admits she doesn't browse the Web
or even own a computer.

"That's for the younger generation," she said.

Yet a lawsuit that Swedenburg has filed could revolutionize
the way alcohol is sold over the Internet. On Tuesday, the
U.S. Supreme Court began hearing arguments in the case,
brought jointly by the Swedenburg Winery and the
Lucas Winery in Lodi, Calif.

News.context

What's new:
A lawsuit brought by a small family winery could revolutionize
the way alcohol is sold over the Internet.

Bottom line:
The economic stakes could be even higher, as states have
been claiming the authority to impose hefty regulations on
out-of-state shipments of everything from cars to funeral
caskets and contact lenses.

More stories on this topic

Dozens of states have slapped strict rules on interstate
shipments of beer and wine, effectively erecting a formidable
barrier that prevents out-of-state wineries like Swedenburg's
from shipping directly to residents of those states.

Critics charge that such laws are little more than protectionist
measures backed by local liquor distributors that enjoy fat
markups and don't have room to stock less-known brews
or vintages.

If Swedenburg prevails, the high court's ruling would likely
doom state laws outlawing direct shipping and provide a
tremendous boost to online and mail-order sales of wine,
beer and perhaps hard liquor as well. A decision is expected
by early July 2005.

While alcohol sales currently occupy only a small e-commerce
niche, they're a sizable portion of the U.S. economy. The
Beer Institute estimates the brewing industry employs about
1.7 million Americans and pays $47 billion a year in wages
and benefits. Approximately 595 million gallons of wine were
sold in the United States in 2002, according to the Wine Institute,
up from 337 million gallons in 1972.

The economic stakes could be even higher. States have been
claiming the authority to impose hefty regulations on out-of-state
shipments of everything from cars to funeral caskets and
contact lenses. A victory by Swedenburg could go a long way
in overturning those laws as well.

At the heart of the current dispute before the justices is the
21st Amendment, which ended Prohibition and awarded states
broad authority to regulate sales of "intoxicating liquors." States
with legal barriers to out-of-state wine and beer shipments
insist that the laws are needed to guard against unscrupulous
vendors and against minors ordering booze online.

"New York has concluded that direct shipment of alcoholic
beverages into the state by unlicensed entities would significantly
impede enforcement of its laws by creating an unregulated
channel for the sale of alcohol," New York Attorney General
Eliot Spitzer argued in a brief. "The oversight enabled by these
record-keeping and access rules is especially important for
the prevention of sales to minors through direct shipment."

New York and Michigan are defending their laws in two
separate cases that have been combined for the oral arguments.
One appeals court found New York's rules to be acceptable;
another struck down Michigan's by ruling against the
Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers.

I am sure we will hear more on this issue folks. Stay tuned.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
PART 8 of 8
Lightheadedness/Dizzy/Eyesight

QUESTION: I am unbelieveably clumsy. I'm 21 and I take
vitamin supplements and exersize on a daily basis. It seems
like I dont pay attention to what I'm doing enough, or I can't
recognize the time or distance between me and some other
object, because I seem to drop things, bump, trip, fall,
snag onto stuff, and do stupid things like walking into doors
before opening them. I read somewhere that clumsyness
is caused by a lack of a certain type of omega acid. I would
like to know if there is any truth to this, or anything that would
help my unbelieveable clumsiness. Thanks!

ANSWER: First of all I don't believe in supporting your
self-imposed negative diagnosis of clumsiness. You are 21,
obviously interested in life, doing many of the right things,
and certainly not being a "couch potato"!

Please commend yourself for all those positive things! It
sounds like you are doing a few things at once and not
stopping long enough to finish one task before going on
to the next. Could you slow down a bit and keep your eye
on the immediate goal? If you think you are a bit out of
control" do you drink a lot of caffeine or diet pop? (But don't
switch to the decaffeinated products. Their chemical
ingredients aren't helpful either.) Check out the things
you eat and drink. They may be not as helpful as you
might think. Diet pop is especially problematic... meaning
it can lead to as many as 92 harmful side effects. So move
more slowly and with greater attention to the purpose.
Then watch your food intake as to ingredients. Make sure
the vitamins you take are of excellent quality and are
complete and balanced. There is no point in spending
your good money on products that don't support you. You
might also invest in some dancing or figure skating
lessons. They teach balance. You might also now start
to decide what you would like to do with your life. That
gives you a purpose and focus. But don't get rid of the
joy you so obviously have inside of you! We all need to
share it with you!

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Again you compliment us where there is no
need. It was you who taught us that service for
it's own sake was sufficient. We are pleased with
that." Mae liked the compliments, especially from
a man like Sien. However, she well knew the
temptations that presented and wanted none of
them.

"You know what I'd like to do, Sien? I'd like
to come with you or one or more of you as you go
about your work. I would like to see and
understand what is happening. Would Sue and I be
able to do that?"

"Certainly. In fact I was going to be over
your part of the country, Pinehill, today and I
would enjoy some company. However, this is a work
day, not a visiting day, so you will have to stay
with me, is that all right?"

"Yes. I'd like that. When do you leave?"

"Right after we finish our meal. It will be
night time over there when we arrive. We will stay
until noon tomorrow Pinehill time, and return."
The rest of the meal went fast. They were away
before Mae and Sue could fully catch up to the
idea.

They found themselves "hovering" over the
Pinehill area. "Now we broadcast love unto the
entire area. Where we see some special problem we
do our best to send good thoughts down so folks
can grab them and deal with them, but under no
circumstances are we to change anyone's actions.

As they were watching they could see people
going about their daily lives in much the same
manner as Mae, Sue and Tlang had watched over that
marketplace that day back in China.

There were cars driving here and there taking
folks where they deemed they had to be or wanted
to go. There were the young folks gathering at
party places. Mae could see them buying and
selling drugs and alcohol. They could see young
kids getting involved with sex, and they could see
some breaking into homes and stealing.

There was a man driving in a car. His driving
was erratic. He had just lost his job today and he
was angry. He wheeled into his driveway at his
home and came to a screeching halt. His wife,
wondering what the noise was, met him at the door.
She began to speak to him but he viciously shoved
her aside and went into the house. She followed
him in, knowing something was wrong. When she went
to ask him what was bothering him he just swung
at her. It hit her in the ribs and hurt bad.

It was only then that he came out of his rage,
realizing he had hurt her. After all the
apologizing and helping her he told her what had
happened. The pair of them were worried that kind
of worry that sinks right into your stomach. They
had no savings. The only money they had was what
his final paycheck was. They both agreed they
would have to both go looking for work the
following morning.

"See the kind of things that happen in man's
world. There is no need for any of the activity
you have looked at so far. The kids you saw are
testing out their worlds, but have not been
properly taught to rely on themselves. They,
instead, prefer to bunch and do what everyone else
does. None are self reliant, but dependent upon
peers. The drugs and alcohol will take some of
them right to their deaths, ruin the lives of
others and some might escape."

"Is it like this all over?"

"Pretty much Sue, if you mean the United
States and Canada. It is like this in England and
Europe, too. Other parts of the world are too
poor, which, in this case is a blessing. Yet they,
too, have their foibles. Look at that man and wife
over there. They are depending on man's worldly
systems and it failed them. They are now so
worried they are sick. That is not the kind of
life their Maker wants for them but they will not
look for they have already concluded they must
take certain action man expects of them. They will
go looking for work, not their Maker."

"All the while I was living that life it never
occurred to me it was wrong, good, bad or
difficult. I just assumed this is what life was
about. Then when my husband came at me and nearly
killed me I began to look at all things. It was a
hard time, but, thanks to Eloise Henry, and her
influence over my son David I found my way. I have
no doubt now you and the others were influential
in all of that and I thank you."

"You are welcome Mae. None of us caused you to
take a change in direction, your Maker did. It was
you, however who saw and made decisions. I am glad
you did for you have proven to be a strong worker.
The same goes for you, too, Susan."

"Thank you Sien." Susan had not really been
listening. She had her eyes on person who appeared
to be slinking in the shadows of downtown
Pinehill. "Look at that." She pointed.
