What does the name "Punxsutawney" mean?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What is a selkie?

A selkie is another strange creature from folklore. The
selkie is a seal-person. To be more precise, it's a
supernatural being that inhabits an ocean realm, but
comes to shore in the shape of a seal. Once on land,
the selkie sheds its seal skin and looks quite human. If
the selkie's seal skin is taken, it must remain in its human
form until it finds the skin. Many stories are told in Irish
and Scottish folklore of human men stealing the seal
skins of female selkies and making the selkie become
a wife. Such stories are always tragic. Inevitably, the
selkie finds her seal skin (it can't be destroyed or she
would die) and leaves her husband and children to
return to her beloved sea.

What is a kelpie?

A kelpie LOOKS like a strong and handsome black horse.
But beware mounting this supernatural creature, for the
kelpie is really a water spirit that will lure you onto its back
and plunge into a lake or the ocean to drown you! Beware
a horse with signs of seaweed or rushes in its mane or
one that has backwards pointing hooves. A kelpie can
also manifest as a ragged old man or handsome young one.

Men Open Their Wallets Online
By Gavin O’Malley
Friday, December 10, 2004

Married women, nearly all of whom believe they do most
of their family's online shopping, will be surprised to learn
that men browse and shop online more frequently than
women do, according to an American Online report out
today. And even though women now represent the majority
of Web shoppers, men plan to spend nearly 15 percent
more online this holiday season--$326 for men against
$284 for women, according to the report.

The findings raised eyebrows of some industry observers.
"I would have expected just the opposite given the
research that I've seen," said Jeffrey Grau, a senior
analyst at eMarketer. "Even though men have traditionally
had more of an online presence, women usually spend
more on and especially offline."

The report, based on a Digital Marketing Service survey
of more than 6,000 adults between August 19 and Sept. 9,
revealed that men research and browse online an average
of 31 times a month compared to 22 times a month
for women.

On average, men spent $204 online each month,
compared to $186 spent by women, according to the
report. Furthermore, 42 percent of men shopped for
luxury goods online vs. 35 percent of women.

One theory, posited by Chuck Moran, BURST! Media's
market research manager, is that women are less
decisive when it comes to online shopping. "Women
tend to hesitate, and go looking for more input from
friends and family, while a guy is more likely to
comparison shop online and impulsively pull the
trigger," suggested Moran.

Impulsive or not, men are willing to spend $1,751 for
a single item online vs. $787 for women, according to
AOL's report. Patrick Gates, senior vice president of
eCommerce at AOL attributed this difference to the
fact that men have traditionally spearheaded their
family's expensive and technical "high- involvement
buys" like plasma TVs and home entertainment systems.

Buying music and videos, clothing and books rank
as the top three categories for both sexes' holiday
gift lists. However, there is a marked difference in the
number of men planning to purchase consumer
electronics as gifts, 38 percent, vs. 25 percent of
women. The same goes for computer software and
hardware as gifts, 37 percent of men vs. 25 percent
of women.

Men also plan to buy more sporting goods and travel
services/tickets, while women plan to purchase more
health & beauty products and toys, reported AOL.

While more women-78 percent against 74 percent of
men-say that finding bargains and deals is important
when shopping online, men are more likely-70 percent
against 64 percent of women-to say that shopping
for bargains and deals is easier on the Internet.

At variance with AOL's findings, JupiterResearch
also predicted in October 2003 that women would
makeup 52 percent of online shoppers through 2008,
men making up the other 48 percent. Jupiter is
expected to release revised forecasts shortly.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

WONDERING ABOUT SYMPTOMS
YOU CAN'T EXPLAIN?
A "heads up" message from
a caring reader.
PART 3 of 3

Back to the chemicals ... you have read about all the proposed
changes it will do to your body. Are you sure? Can you live
with the results if they are not as planned... as our friend's are
now? Can you go to work as a elementary school teacher and
be sick and dizzy and nauseated? How about being an airline
pilot or ICU nurse and having dizzy spells... So how do you
find out about possible side effects? Look on the product bottle,
read the inserts, ask the pharmacist, but know that some
pharmacists aren't always willing to give negative feedback.
The next best area to research is the Internet with Medline.com
or Google or Ask Jeeves. Any good search tool will be helpful,
but get some objective information about the products you are
about to put into your body. And when you read some negative
or confusing wording, stay calm. Ask someone to "interpret"
them for you. Don't jump to any conclusions until you have
considered all the angles. If you have sensitivities or intolerance's,
be doubly alert. Will they be affected adversely? A sensitivity is
something that your body reacts to a little more "intensely" than
the average person. It could give quicker and stronger results,
which you may not want. Read the ingredients carefully. You
may not have any major problems with the main ingredients,
but maybe some of the associate ingredients could be harmful.
A good example is antibacterial soap. Most of us can tolerate
those, but if you have an allergy or intolerance to the microbial
agent in it, you could have side effects. Again, it's your body: know
what is going into it.

So who would possibly ever connect this 'wonder drug' to dizziness?
But then who could ever connect artificial sweeteners with
92 possible side effects? These are all "foreigners" going into
the body: not of its original composition. And then remember,
too, all the environmental and probably hidden…chemicals you
are exposed to every day. There could be great difficulty in
trying to match symptoms with chemicals, so it's up to you to
make wise choices when you add chemicals in many forms.
My friend was fortunate to find a health professional who made
critical suggestions. His gift to us is to share what he has learned.
So stay healthy. Eat your veggies and supplements, avoid pain,
and enjoy pleasure!

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

They knew to the core of their being what had
happened and who had come to speak with them. The
shock was so great the congregation could only sit
and think. Slowly, one by one they got up and
left, no one saying a thing.

The minister was affected more than anyone. He
had silently fallen behind the pulpit,
unconscious. No one came to his aid. The shock
they were in was so great no one noticed even
where he was.

Sharon Smithson was also shocked. She knew now
she could no longer get away with her charade and
that all she did was found out. In her desire to
be accepted she readily fed the masses what they
wanted and was caught doing it. Now she had to
deal with herself, whether she liked it or not.
Tim had long told her about the law "As ye sow, so
shall ye reap." She had to interpret her life and
her actions according to that.

Humans play such games with one another. Even
those who say they are well intentioned have an
agenda. And those who profess their religion in
business are likely the ones who are the most
greedy. Trading on religion is about as low as
ethics can take one. Since no religion publicly or
privately does what Jesus tells them to do then it
becomes merely a banner, a flag that identifies
ones frame of mind. With churches themselves in
the money raising business it becomes clear where
the hearts and minds of the leaders and their
followers are. It appears any method can be used
to raise money so long as a good portion goes to
the church.

So the congregation dispersed, one by one,
with their minds well occupied with what they had
seen, heard and felt. None were of the same mind
now that they had when they first arrived at
church.

The minister stirred. He found himself lying
on the floor behind the pulpit and didn't know how
he got there. He was confused. He could no longer
think as he once did. "Was that Jesus that came
into this church?" Those were the thoughts going
through his mind.

Interesting enough the majority of the Board
of Elders were also at church that night. The
minister would no longer be facing their
requirement to speak against the Henrys, the
Whites or the Strikers. The members of the Board
of Elders knew who had come to church this night.
Mae, Susan and Sien were pleased with the
outcome of Jesus' visit. Tim had returned home
and, saying nothing, sat down to have a coffee
with his folks.

It was time for Mae, Susan and Sien to return
to the monastery in China. Their replacements had
arrived and were now taking over.

They arrived in time to join others for a
meal. The moment they sat at the long table there
was food in front of them. They ate in silence.

"You can rest in this room here if you like."
Sien had taken them to a vacant room in the
monastery after they had eaten. "It has been a
long shift and one I am sure you are not used to
yet. Thank you for joining me. I enjoyed your
company. I hope you liked what you saw. It is
likely your day will come where you do this work
as well, but rush it not. You are doing fine with
the work you are doing. Thank you."

With that Mae and Susan lay down and slept the
sleep of babies. They were tired and slept for ten
hours. It was breaking day when they opened their
eyes.

Rising they returned to the great room where
there seemed to be a never ending meal going on.
They ate.

Upon their standing, having eaten, they sent
out the thoughts to all present, "Thank you."
Those present nodded then continued their meal.
Mae and Susan walked out of the great room and
were met by the same host who had welcomed them.

"Please come visit us again. We would love to
have you. Please bring your friends Reno, Amenti
and Maria. If you follow me I will show you the
way out."

They were led through a series of staircases
and chambers until, finally, they were shown out
an entrance way that was on top of the escarpment.
When they turned to look back they could see this
entrance way was as disguised as were those at the
bottom of the escarpment. "Good bye and thank
you." Mae and Susan gave their guide a hug and
were on their way.

This land, the vegetation, the temperature,
the climate on the escarpment were a complete
change from below. The land was rocky, a thin
layer of soil that supported only grass. The winds
were able to get a run for a hundred miles without
obstruction. The only change in the landscape was
the occasional rolling hill or an abrupt
outcropping of rock and those were few and far
between. This was the steps of China. They spread
east and west for hundreds of miles and north and
south for about half that distance. It occupied
much of China's northern area and combined with
the Gobi desert were vast barriers of defense.
Only those who lived here knew the land, where to
find water and how to survive.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

This small not-for-profit organization is looking for ways
to cut costs, and one obvious solution is to make all the
research it produces available on a Web site, says a
technician working there.

"That will wean subscribers away from bound reports,
which are expensive to print and mail," he says.

"A big selling point is that this makes all the latest information
immediately accessible, rather than subscribers having
to wait for the report to be updated and printed every
several years."

"Another advantage is that subscriber companies could
make the information available to more people in the
organization."

Everybody wins. What could go wrong?

Electronic versions of the reports are uploaded. Then a
slick, full-color brochure is designed and printed, touting
the benefits of using the Web site.

"After the marketing piece is distributed, it is proudly
displayed at a staff meeting," says the technician.

"Only one problem -- no one bothered to let the editors
look over the brochure before it was approved for printing."

"We immediately noticed that the Web address appeared
nowhere in the entire brochure."
